IPhoto 11 using Photoshop CS5 as external editor

I set the preference in iPhoto to use PS as external editor. It fires up PS when I click on "Edit" after bringing up the photo. I make my edits and hit save, then close the photo & minimize PS. iPhoto automatically makes a duplicate with the edits, which I can then upload to MobileMe & Facebook. However...once I shut down iPhoto, the duplicate edited photo disappears next time I fire up iPhoto. The thumbnail continues to show, edits and all....but when I click on it, I get the black box and exclamation point (no verbiage). I was able to download the edited photo from Facebook to my desktop, so I know the photo was saved into iPhoto at the time the edit was performed....but everything except the useless thumbnail disappears once I close. I cannot locate any info that will help.....anyone?

What you're experiencing is a bug with iPhoto 11. See my post in these topics: Re: iPhoto 11 bug when using external editor (Photoshop Elements) and Re: Editing in Photoshop.
Be sure to report it to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html. The more it gets reported the more likely a fix will be issued.

  • Elements 8 Organiser won't load Photoshop CS5 as external editor

For some years I've succesfully used Photoshop CS2 with Elements (various versions) Organiser as my photo file manager.  The Organiser allowed me to select Photoshop as the external editor and subsequently accepted/managed the edited photos from Photoshop when I closed the file there.  (I prefer the facilities of Organiser to those of Bridge; and other folk in the household prefer Elements Editor).
I recently upgraded from Photoshop CS2 to CS5 64bit.  Initially Elements 8 Organiser (which is 32bit) continued to call up Photoshop (CS5) as the external editor but has now ceased to do so.  There is still an option in Organiser's dropdown EDIT list to "Edit in Photoshop" and any thumbnails selected in the Organiser get the "being edited" label applied if I select the "Edit with Photoshop" option.  However, Photoshop does not open;  or, if I have Photoshop open already, the photos selected in Organiser do not appear in the Photoshop workspace for editing.
I cannot, either, find the "close external edit" option in Organiser. When I eventually close Organiser, it warns that I will lose any editing done with the external editor to those photos it thinks it has handed to Photoshop, even though there has not been any handover in fact.
I can chose, in Organiser, to edit the very same photos with Elements Editor, even though Organiser appears to think that they are currently being edited by Photoshop.  If I do edit such a photo in Elements Editor then close it, the Organiser becomes happy and forgets it thought Photoshop was involved at all.
Is there some switch in a config file somewhere that I can throw to get the Organiser to actually call up Photoshop and hand it the file(s)?  Or is this just an Adobe glitch?  Any help or clues would be much appreciated.

    Graham,
I have tried to persuade Elements Organiser to reconsider Photoshop as an external editor by going to the "Editing" section of Elements Preferences dialogues and specifying Photoshop.exe.  However, no matter which version of Photoshop.exe I point at (64bit CS5, 32bit CS5 or even the old 32bit CS2) Elements tells me that it automatically already has Photoshop as an external editor and I don't need to specify it as such.
On trying to exit the Preferences/Editing dialogue, Elements then pops up another dialogue box that tells me that "The path you chose for the external editing application is invalid.  Please correct the path or choose another external editor".  I need to uncheck the "Use a supplementary editing application" to stop this box re-popping.
The Elements EDIT drop down menu still shows Photoshop as an available editing application.  However, as described in the original post, Photoshop does not load or pick up any file specified for Photoshop editing within Elements Organiser.
I've also tried resetting Elements Organiser Preferences to their default.  This does not make any difference to the problem either.  There is an Organiser glitch I think.  I am begining to think it will need a Registry fix ..... but of what I have no real idea; and it isn't a good idea to mess with the Registry in a haphazard way.
Perhaps I should try a reload of Elements from scratch, after saving my Catalogue file somewhere safe?

  • Using Photoshop Elements as External Editor for iPhoto

I have set up iPhoto so that I can use Photoshop Elements as the external editor. When I select a photo and choose 'External Editor,' Elements comes up but my photo is not displayed.

    Hi Toomuchtrouble000,
When you are making the settings from iPhoto, make sure you select Photoshop Elements Editor, which is present in Support Files, not Photoshop Elements 11, which is actually the Welcome Screen.
    Please change that setting.
    Hope this helps.

  • Photoshop CS5, primary external editor

Well, I'm going to try this again. I posted the question once before, but nobody answered. I have tried to search but haven't found what I need. And, admittedly, I haven't paid attention when it has been answered in the past because I didn't think it would never affect me. I have been using Photoshop CS3 along with my Lightroom 3. No problems, no complaints. But now I'm going to move to Photoshop CS5. Consequently the question: should I just uninstall Lightroom and then install Photoshop CS5 followed by reinstalling Lightroom? I want CS5 to be the primary external editor. Photoshop CS3 will still be on my computer. Or, I guess the easiest question is, what is the simplest way to have Lightroom see Photoshop CS5 as the primary external editor? I apologize for having to ask this question.

Typically, the last installed Adobe editing application will take precedence, although Windows XP can misbehave. Therefore, install CS5 after Lr.

  • Workflow using photoshop elements as external editor

    Hi.
I am very satisfied with aperture 3. I think it is an excellent program, and the organization of pictures are excellent. I love all the editing options as well. However I looked at some tutorials on photoshop elements 9, and really like some of the editing options there, so I am thinking of buying that program. I would like to use aperture 3 as my main photo editing program and organizing all my pictures via aperture 3. However on some pictures I would like to use elements to edit (remove unwanted persons and do on). As I understand it, i will have to set up aperture 3 so that elements will be my external editor. Will the changes I make in elements then be saved in the project library in aperture 3.
Can anyone with experience on this elaborate?

Gunfighter, how did you do it? The only options the "home" screen provides are (1) welcome screen opens on start, (2) organizer starts behind welcome screen or (3) editor starts behind welcome screen. Surprisingly, when I start Elements 9 on its own, the welcome screen doesn't show and the program immediately opens in the edit mode. However, when I'm in Aperture and go to external editor, Elements 9 immediately opens with the welcome screen and the picture never transfers from Aperture to Elements; very frustrating! Appreciate any help you can provide.

  • Saving to Aperture after using Photoshop as an External Editor

I'd be grateful for guidance please. I use Aperture but sometimes use the external editor (Photoshop in my case). When I have finished editing in Photoshop what is the best way to get the finished photograph back into Aperture? Do I have to do another import or is there a way to get the saved photo as another version next to the original but including the work I did in Photoshop. If it is possible I would expect this to be a flattened image (ie not preserving Photoshop layers). Thoughts and guidance would be much appreciated.

The following series of events occurs without fail in aperture 3 and CSPS4:
I place a single JPG image on desktop. Then, in aperture, I create a new project named TEST. I then import this single JPG into aperture, making the choice to store the master on the desktop, rather than in the aperture library.
The JPG image now is in aperture in the PROJECT "TEST". I then select this single image in aperture and send it to CSPS4 to edit.
I can see aperture write a new image to the project with the same name as the JPG but the suffix is now TIFF (note two "f" in this suffix). This happens as photoshop is opening and i can briefly see the TIFF file in the aperture browser before photoshop completes opening.
I then edit the "TIFF" image in photoshop (which is by now completely opened) and SAVE (not save as...) it. Since I have previously chosen 16bit TIFF in the preferences I expect to get this file with the photoshop edits in the aperture project TEST. HOWEVER, the file is written with the suffix "TIF". Note that there is only one "f" in this suffix.
Now, on my desktop I have THREE files, a JPG, a TIFF, and a TIF. Aperture shows only 2 images in the TEST project, the original JPG and the TIFF. This TIFF was written by aperture before i edited it in photoshop. Apparently my edits in photoshop are in the file IMAGE.TIF, which is not in my aperture TEST project.
This has to be a bug regarding the suffexes "TIFF" and "TIF" This would explain why my "edited" file in my aperture project TEST shows no evidence of having been edited.
This has been difficult to explain clearly but perhaps someone has noticed.

  • How-to: Using Photoshop CS5 on external drive

If you've installed Photoshop CS5 on an external hard drive, you might experience crashes. This is due to these drives automatically going to sleep mode after a few minutes. Some drives allow you to modify the sleep mode settings; however, many others don't let you change these presets.
One solution: On Windows, use a program such as NoSleep to prevent the drive from going to sleep. To save energy, once you've shut down Photoshop, you can disable the NoSleep program and your external drive will once again use its default sleep mode. The program puts a convenient item in your system tray.
    Here's a similar solution for OS X.

  • Using Photoshop Elements as external editor with Aperture 3: What are issues with requiring 8-bit image?

While I would do most of my photo edits with Aperture there may be times I would like to do special effects that a PSE might offer with layers.  I am considering purchasing PSE 10 and was concerned with having to lose information by saving as an 8-bit image.  Can anyone enlighten me of the circumstances when this would be of concern?
    Thanks.

If you had to do high quality printing larger than 8x10.
Before buying PSE trial Pixelmator and try GIMP. Note that GIMP (now v2.6) will have 16-bit per channel with v3.0.

  • Photoshop Elements12 as external editor for iPhoto

How do I get IPhoto to use Photoshop Elements12 as external editor, when I can not select "Application" under the advance setting, as suggested. It shows PSE12, but the photo's do not open up in that application. The application opens, with no photo. What needs to be changed, and how do I do it?

Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note 1: screenshots are from PSE 10
Note:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

  • Lightroom 1.2 has lost Photoshop CS3 as external editor

In Lightroom 1 I used Photoshop CS2 as external editor and lightroom has found it with the first choice of external editors.
In Lightroom 1.1 I used Photoshop CS3 as external editor and lightroom has also found CS3 in the first choice of external editors. CS2 was deinstalled.
Now I have Lightroom 1.2 and this version doesn't automatically find cs3. I have only installed lightroom 1.2 and have nothing done with the installation of cs3.
How can I solve the problem, because I want to have two external editors?

Try the following link. The upgrade to 1.2 lost track of CS3 for me too. I fixed it by editing the registry as outlined in the article.

  • "Use RAW files with external editor" greyed out for Photoshop CS2?

I've just upgraded from iPhoto 5, and the "Use RAW files with external editor" option in the advanced preferences is greyed out when I select Photoshop CS2 as my external editor (back in the General pane).
It works fine when Preview.app is selected. I can understand that pre-CS2 Photoshop wouldn't be available, but CS2 is capable of editing RAW images.
Has anyone been able to get iPhoto 6 to send a RAW image to Photoshop CS2 using this preference? I've written an Applescript to do it in iPhoto 5, but I'd rather use something cleaner...
    15" PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Works great with Photoshop Elements, opens with Camera Raw. The issue is you can't save it so that iPhoto gets the changes.
You have to save it and then re-import. I tried all permutations of saving it in originals and modified folders in the library. No luck. The only thing I didn't try is to save it as a jpeg over the top of the full sized one iPhoto created on import.

  • Use of Photoshop Elements as external editor for JPEGS

    Hi,
Aperture (1.5.4) only gives me two options for file format if I want to use Photoshop Elements 3.0 as my external editor. They are TIFF and PSD. I store my images on Aperture in JPEG.
How can I edit them in JPEG format in Photoshop Elements and back to Aperture?
    Thanks
    MST

To stay in the JPG world, you would export from Aperture using the export function, Import into Photoshop, edit, Save or Save As JPG, then Import into Aperture. Then re-group by manually selecting the original and the edited version and Stack.
    Do-able but not effective.
The issue with JPG's is cumulative errors leading to visible artifacts every time you save. Artifacts very visible in solid color areas such as sky or painted walls as contours and bands.
So, using the "Open with external editor ..." option allows you to round-trip as a PSD. Yes, it consumes incremental disk space vs. JPG, but the upside is substantially better quality. This is I assume why Aperture does not support JPG round-tripping, and I certainly wouldn't advocate the approach either.
Note: JPG is an old standard by technology standards, which is its blesssing (universality) and its curse (poorer than needed performance). JPG weaknesses are well documented and Microsoft of all people created a new format recently and submitted to the JPG committee for standards approval: I believe this has been granted, and camera manufacturers are already starting to adopt. Thus the days of JPG as the preferred lossy compression algorithm for image files are numbered.

  • IPhoto 11 and PS Elements 10 - external editor issue

My Imac has been upgraded to Mountain Lion, iPhoto 11 and PS Elements 10. Now right-clicking shots in iPhoto browser brings up external editor choice and will then open PSE 10, but not the shot ( I have to drag shot to desktop, open with PSE10, save, import back to iPhoto - a huge step backwards). Same software ( iPhoto 11 and PSE10) works fine, albeit slowly) on my Macbook Pro running Lion. Please help?

You're selecting the wrong item as the editor in the Adobe PSE folder.  It's fooled a lot of us in the past.  This is the file you want to select as the external editor:
I may be preaching to the choir here but maybe the following will enlighten a bit on using PSE as the external editor:
