IPhoto 11 will not (won't) import photos

After upgrading to iPhoto 11 I cannot import photos using the usual methods.
I have tried importing via ImageCapture app (my usual choice). When that did not work, I tried dragging the files from my camera media to iPhoto. When that did not work, I copied the files to my desktop and then tried dragging to iPhoto. When that did not work, I used the iPhoto command: Import to Library.
Nothing seems to work. No new pictures can be added to iPhoto via any method that worked previously. I have tried relaunching iPhoto, rebuilding iPhoto but the results are the same. No new photos or events...
Another weird anomaly is that my camera's CF memory card shows (0) photos in the iPhoto listing, but if I open it in finder or ImageBrowser, I can see all the files there ok.
Pretty weird. After backing up my iPhoto library, the install, upgrade and conversion to iPhoto 11 seemed to go fine. Only now, the library is pretty much unable to be added to.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
Steve

Try the following:
1 - download and launch BatChmod .
2 - drag the iPhoto application into the BatChmod window.
3 - set the ownership and privileges settings to that shown in this screenshot:
4 - launch iPhoto and see if you can import now.

Lightroom will not let me import photos from either my camera or my desktop. They show up in the preview bit of Lightroom and I select the ones i want to import, then add my metadata info etc and file handling, but then when I hit IMPORT just keeps saying they can't be read.  SO FRUSTRATING.

You are copying the photos. Does LR have the permission to delete the files from its source location - as DdeGannes suggested? Maybe this dialog is misleading.
Did you try to just add files copied to the destination before - just for finding the issue?
If nothing helps: Any chance you can upload one of the jpg to some file sharing service so we can have look at it?
I believe DdeGannes suggested permission on the Destination folder (not the source folder).  Performing a copy requires only Read&Write permission on the destination folder, not the source folder. You need to go into your operating system and change the permissions to Read&Write on the destination folder. (If you don't know how to do that, go to your favorite search engine and type in Change Permissions Mac)

  • My IPhoto library will not sync all my photo's and videos to my IPhone 4

My IPhoto library will not sync all my photo's and videos to my IPhone 4. It comes up well short every time. After syncing, I get a message,  "example 1171 photo's could not be synced, please see Itunes for help". I have lots of space/gb on my Iphone, so I'm confused. I've done a factory reset and done all the usual stuff, but to no avail. My Iphone is a 32gb IPhone 4, my IMAC is OS10.6.8 and my IPhoto is IPhoto 08. I appologise in advance if i'm posting in the wrong place, so please no nasty trolls. I just need good, honest, kindly advice and a solution to this. I use my IPhone as a further external backup for my photo's
    Kindest regards

Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for the iPod Photo Cache.
Trash it. Start iPhoto and try sync again.

  • IPhoto 9.5.1 won't import photos.

I upgraded to 9.5.1 and it won't let me import photos.  I've tried from the camera, iPhone, iPad, and an external memory card reader.  iPhoto will show the pictures and lets me click on the import button.  Then there is the rainbow circle that never stops and doesn't let the import continue.  I did not have this issue until I upgraded.  Will uninstalling and re-installing make me lose any pictures?

Will uninstalling and re-installing make me lose any pictures?
No - but it will not solve anything either since you are virtually certain to hae a data problem rather than an application problem
And in any case I assume you have a good backup so you are protected in case of unusual problems - if yo do not then sooner or later you will lose your photos
Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - repair permissions and if necessary rebuild your database

iPhoto 9.5 immediately tries to "upgrade" my library using the upgrader.
iPhoto 9.5 asks you to run the upgrader to prepare the library for 9.5. It then will update the library to its format.
You need to do the following:
1 - go to your Applications/Utilities folder and double click on the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 application.
2 - select Choose Library, navigate to your iPhoto library, select it and let the upgrader do its thing.
3 - launch iPhoto 9.5 to open and finish the conversion of the library.

  • Iphoto will not recognize and import photos from camera.

Have a Kodak camera and never had any problems importing pictures from it directly to Iphoto until I upgraded My Imac to 10.6.8 Am using Iphoto 09 version 8.1.2. This is becoming quite a problem after searching for answers and seeing all the posts all over the place. I think it must be the Mac upgrade. Can't be the camera. Thanks for any help. I can get pics to Iphot but what a hassle.

While some issues have been reported with some Kodak camera's a more likely problem is the format of the memory card - get your photos off and reformat the card using the camera's format command  you can also try renewing the iPhoto preference file -
A good general step for strange issues is to renew the iPhoto preference file - quit iPhoto and go to "your user name" ==> library ==> preferences ==> com.apple.iPhoto.plist and trash it - launch iPhoto which creates a fresh new default preference file and reset any personal preferences you have changed and if you have moved the iPhoto library repoint to it. This may help
This does not affect your photos or any database information (keywords, faces, places, ratings, etc) in any way - they are stored in the iPhoto library - the iPhoto preference file simply controls how iPhoto works - which is why renewing it is a good first step.

  • IPhoto: Pictures will not open/cannot import from Digital Camera

    hey guys!
I'm just recently having problems with iPhoto. I can open pictures on my iMac when clicking on them through folders itself, but when I go into iPhoto and try to double-click on the thumbnail images which show up to make them full size, they do not open..the wheel just spins to show its loading but the pictures do not load.
Also, when i click IMPORT to import pictures from my digital camera, the wheel also just spins and it does nothing again, and says it couldnt import the pictures as they are an unrecognized file, which is weird as this had all worked before.
    thanks!

Since my last software update, my iphoto 11 will not import any photos from any source. The circle just spins...when I go to force quit, it says iphoto not responding. Backed up iphoto library, uninstalled and reinstalled iphoto. Still not working. Help!

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Iphoto won't quit, won't import photos, stalls while editing photos despite rebuilding the database

I have mountain lion and the newest version of iphoto.   It won't quit unless I force quit it, it won't import photos, it won't let me edit photos without freezing up.   I have tried rebuilding the database and repairing permissions without success

Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If it freezes also try this:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If the new library doesn't freeze or act like your current library then your current library is the culprit.
In that case  Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Suddenly, one of my iPhoto Libraries will not open, or rather iPhoto opens, but says there are no photos in the file.  However, when I backed it up and looked into it otherwise, the images 86gigs are still there in the file. What to do??

Suddenly, one of my iPhone libraries will not open with 86 gigs of images: it opens and says there are no photos, yet by other looking, all the images are there and when backing up, it takes an hour.
Somehow iPhoto application will not recognize the images (over 13,000) in the file.
Any suggestions as to how to fix the matter<
    Dr. Harris, Bermuda

To move from iPhoto 08 (which is v7) to iPhoto 11 (which is v9) requires that you purchase iPhoto 11. Your software update is running just fine. V7.1.5 is last version of iPhoto 08.
Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
    As to the problematic library:
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download <a href="http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/"><b><u>iPhoto Library Manager</b></u></a> and use its rebuild function.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

photos in my iPhoto library will not enlarge when double clicked on.  they fill the screen for a second (or less) and then screen goes black.  hasn't happened before.  thanks--

There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
    1. Permissions in the Library: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
    2. Minor Database corruption: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    3. A Damaged Photo: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). (On iPhoto 11 this option is under the File -> Reveal in Finder.) Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
    4. A corrupted iPhoto Cache: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/ Library/ Caches...
    5. A corrupted preference file: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
If none of these help: As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
