IPhoto '11 won't import 3gp files, but iPhoto '09 did. Help!

I had iPhoto '09, which imported 3gp video files from my android phone just fine.  Then I upgraded to iPhoto '11, and suddenly I can't import them; they're an "unrecognized file format" WTH? Why, Apple, why? Just to add insult to injury, the old 3gp videos that I imported to iPhoto before the upgrade still show up in iPhoto AND play in iPhoto, so clearly they can't be THAT unrecognized.  And no, changing the filename extension to m4v does not seem to trick iPhoto '11 into importing.
Is this just fallout from a Google - Apple fight? Any other workarounds?  Apple, can you please shed some light on this, since this forum is full of people asking the same question?

Is your version of Perian up-to-date?
As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • IPhoto '09 won't import JPG files from my phone.

    Here's the step-by-step
I have a new Samsung Evergreen phone that evidently stores photos in .JPG format, not sure yet if I can tell it to save them as .JPEG.
On my MacBook, I have over 10,000 photos in my iPhoto library imported from several different cameras and copied from previous computers.
I attach the phone to the Mac with a microUSB-->USB cable. (( BTW - MacBookPro is Intel Core 2 Duo ca August '09 ))
Phone wants to know about USB mode.... I select "Media Player"
iPhoto'09 (V 8.1.2 (424)) comes alive recognizes the device, finds the pictures, and offers to Import them. Cool!...  I select "Import All".
iPhoto goes through the motions of importing all 22 files then displays a message "The following file could not be imported. (The file is in an unrecognized format.) this is followed by a list of all 22 files.
I know that most, if not all, images in my iPhoto database are JPEG suffixed.  But from all I've read, JPG and JPEG are identical/interchangeable
I've been a devout Mac user for over 2 years now and haven't ever encountered a problem with anything that needed to be resolved on this discussion board or even by calling Apple Support.  All I can conclude about this is that I'm doing something really, grossly, stupid.  But I sure don't know how to proceed.  Should I go to an Apple Retail store and have them figure it out?
Appreciate any thoughts you folks may have on this.

    2 Possibilities:
The phone is taking non-standard jpegs in some way of other
    Or
The phone is broken and the jpegs are corrupted in some way
Why do I blame the phone? Because neither the Mac nor the PC can access the files.
So, back to Samsung for help on that one.
No, no one from Apple reads or responds on here. As the Terms of Use make quite clear, this is a space for Users to seek help from other Users only. It's not a substitute for AppleCare. There are something in the region of 100,000,000 iPhones out there. It's inevitable that some devices will have issues, and some users. So, taken in that scale, the fact that - what -  a couple of hundred people have issues mightn't seem so appalling.

  • Iphoto won't import NEF files (RAW) How do I convert to Jpeg?

Iphoto won't download Nikon NEF (RAW) files. Nor will Aperture. Can I convert existing files to Jpeg ?

Iphoto won't download Nikon NEF (RAW) files
The raw support is specific for each camera model. iPhoto and Aperture can import NEF files for many Nikon models, and it will depend on the camera you are using and your MacOS X version, see this list of supported cameras: Apple - Aperture - Technical Specifications - RAW Support
Can I convert existing files to Jpeg ?
Use the software that came with your camera to develope the RAW files, that will give the best results.  Or try the Adobe DNG converter - download it here: Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Macintosh

  • IMovie Won't Import MP4 Files

For some reason iMovie '11 won't let me import videos.  Specifically, I'm trying to add MP4 files that I copied to my hard drive from my GoPro HD 960.  For GoPro users, I used the R2 (720p) format.  They open properly in QuickTime and VLC but can't be imported into iMovie (or iPhoto).  When I select File-->Import-->Movies and browse to the directory where I saved all the .mp4 files on my hard drive, they're all greyed out.  And actually, it seems that just about no video files at all on my computer can be added (all greyed out)--even other MP4 files.
I downloaded MPEG Streamclip but that says "unrecognized file format" when I try opening the videos.  I also installed Perian and rebooted.
    In case it helps:
    - I have an Intel MacBook running OS X 10.6.8 with iLife '11
    - QuickTime info for the video format says "H.264, 1280 x 720, Millions; AAC, 2 channels, 48000 Hz"
    - VLC says "Stream 0 (Video) - Codec: avc1" and "Stream 1 (Audio) - Codec: mp4a"
Any ideas?  This is incredibly frustrating!

Why iMovie Won't Import MP4 Files?
Technically, iMovie does import MP4 video. However, iMovie only import MP4 files that are encoded with MPEG4/AAC or H.264/AAC data. And yet, MP4 is a video container format that may contain various audio and video codec (and sometimes even subtitle streams included). If the MP4 file is not encoded with iMovie support codec, iMovie will refuse to import this kind of MP4 video.
How to Solve Can't Import MP4 into iMovie?
In order to successfully import all kinds of MP4 files to iMovie, a recommended solution is to convert iMovie unrecognized MP4 to iMovie supported video format.
iDealshare VideoGo is just the right MP4 to iMovie Converter which can convert various MP4 to iMovie supported MPEG-4, MPEG-2, MOV or DV. Besides converting MP4 to iMovie, iDealshare VideoGo also helps to convert other video formats including AVI, WMV, MPEG, VOB, MOV, AVCHD, MTS, M2T, M2TS, TOD, MOD, XAVC, FLV, MKV, SWF, 3GP, MVI, ASF and etc to iMovie video format.

  • My iPhoto 2 won't import videos from my camera, only photos.

Like the title says, my iPhoto 2 won't import any videos from my Cannon SD1000 digital camera, only photos. A friend says it's because I have an old version of iPhoto, which is true, but when I looked for updates it basically told me I need to purchase a new version of iLife. What can I do about getting a newer version of iPhoto, or making it so it imports videos? It's inconvient using the softwear that came with the camera only for a few videos. Thanks, I could use any help.

    JordanFox,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Your friend is correct; iPhoto 2 does not handle video files. You'll need at least iPhoto 5 to keep videos in your library. There is no other way to get it than to purchase a copy of iLife, either version 5 or version 6. Upgrades from one version to another cost money, updates within a version (ex; 6.0 to 6.0.6) are free downloads from Apple.
Try using Image Capture (in your Applications folder) to upload the video clips to your Mac. You can manage them yourself in your Movies folder.
    Regards.

  • Cannot import PDF files into iPhoto 4.0.3

Is it possible to import PDF files into iPhoto 4.0.3? I can't drag and drop them into iphoto folders without the "Unreadable Files" error. I have tried importing them through the iPhoto menu and still get the same results. I have tried importing the PDF files from several places such as my desktop because I wondered if the location of the original made a difference, but that doesn't seem to help. I didn't find anything when I searched for this problem here in the forum so I wondered if anyone else is having the same problems.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Morgan

No because I had iPhoto 4 open and tried to run the Save PDF to iPhoto on a book in that library. I think it's just the different data structure, etc.. It's just not compatible with Automator or at least that particular workflow. I tried printing to PDF from V4 and then do the Save to iPhoto from Preview with V4 open and I still get the error message. So iPhoto 4 is just not compatible with that workflow.
A workaround is to create a PDF file of the whole book and then manually save each page as a jpg file and import those. That's what I did for my first book. You could do a screen shot of each page in the preview mode and use those but the resolution will be limited to screen resolution, 72dip. You will get resolutions on the order of 150-200 dpi thru the Save As route in Preview or the Save to iPhoto automator method.
I'm sure you could create an Automator workflow that would take the PDF file and save each page as a jpg file and name it sequentially. I'll have to take a closer look at Automator soon.

  • Importing 3GP Files into a Final Cut Timeline

I'm trying to import 3GP files from a cell phone video camera into Final Cut to edit. I've read that it can be done, but I'm having difficulties setting the correct presets in FCP.
When I import a clip into FCP I get the following settings in the clip window:
    FRAME SIZE: 352 x 288
    Vid Rate: 10 fps
    Compressor: H.263
    Aud Rate: 8.0 KHZ
That said, I cannot replicate these settings when I try to set the "Sequence Settings" and therefore, the clip does not appear in the timeline when I drag it down. Is there a preset for using this file format? Is there an easier way to do this?
Thank you in advance for your help.

as your mobile phone footage is a non standard tv format, you really need to start off with a proper sequence setting, SD PAL, SD NTSC 4:3 then import your footage into the browser, drop it onto the timeline and let fcp auto conform to the sequence. You could also look at compressor to convert it to the right frame size, or use mpeg streamclip to turn the footage into DV QT movie
but as the mobile footage is small and highly compressed @10 frames a sec it is never going to look great anyway

  • Importing PDF files into iPhoto

I seem to remember being able to import pdf files into iPhoto; now I am unable to.
When I click on the pdf option in Print, "Save PDF to iPhoto" is one of the options given. If I click it, and try to save pdfs to iPhoto, I get a dialog box asking me to choose which album to import to. Whichever one I choose, I get an Applescript error, "file/private/temp/etc.etc.jpg was not found (-43)" .
If I create a pdf and drag it to iPhoto, I get an "Unreadable files" dialog box telling me "The following file could to be imported. (The file is in an unrecognized format.)"
And if I try to import via File––>Import, the pdfs are all greyed out.
    Any suggestions?
Would upgrading the OS to 10.4.5 or the iPhoto to 6.1 help? I'm temporarily abroad, and don't want to screw up the laptop if I can avoid it.

    luba:
That's been a bug with the Automator workflow ever since it's been introduced. Be sure to post that fact at the iPhoto feedback page: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html.
I wanted to create a slideshow of a book that I created but had to open each page of the book and do a Save As, picking the jpg format, to be able to do what I wanted.

  • Can't import .jpg files from iPhoto Library

What is the meaning of the error message I invariably get when attempting to import a photo file? It goes like this:
"The file could not be imported: The file “Macintosh HD/Users/alex/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals/2006/20060415 To Aigina with grandad and grandma/DSC04837.JPG” can’t be imported; QuickTime couldn’t parse it: -2048"
    Many thanks, people.

One more thing: I went into iPhoto's preferences, in Advanced, and checked the first option (Importing: Copy files to iPhoto Library folder when adding to library). I then added one photo to the library.
Then, from iMovie, I selected that newly added photo and bam! it was in! So, I guess, iMovie can't handle correctly iPhoto Library photos if they have not been copied into the iPhoto Library folder structure, correct? Is that what the expected behavior of iMovie HD should be? or a bug to be addressed in future upgrades?
    Many thanks, as always.

  • I purchased Lightroom 5, loaded it on my Mac, and updated to version 5.6. I then tried importing photos from my Sony DSC-RX100iii. Unfortunately it only imports JPEG files but no RAW files. What is the problem and how do I fix it?

I purchased Lightroom 5, loaded it on my Mac, and updated to version 5.6. I then tried importing photos from my Sony DSC-RX100iii. Unfortunately it only imports JPEG files but no RAW files. What is the problem and how do I fix it?

Than LR should have brought in the RAW files as well. ACR is the RAW
processing engine used by LR under the covers so anything not supported by
ACR would not be supported by Lightroom.
Are you shooting RAW plus JPEG? By default, Lightroom will stack then
unless you tell it not to. Check to see if there is a small badge on the
preview that looks like two sheets of paper with a number. That is how
Lightroom indicates a stack. You can unstack them by clicking on the badge.
There is also a menu item to stack/unstack photos. Otherwise, I would have
to research but not sure why Lightroom would ignore the RAW photos but
    still import the JPEGS.

Premiere CS6 won't import mov files, the message: "file has no video or audio streams" shows up instead. How can I import the files?

MOV is a wrapper that can contain many different codecs. The message you get is indicative of a distribution codec inside the MOV wrapper. You may need to convert the material to an editable codec before importing.
