IPhoto 2.0.1so sloooooow. why?

I've been using iPhoto 2.0.1 on my G4 400
and draging pics into albums or scrolling through
all the photos slows my G4 and I have to wait for ages!
the spinning colour beachball goes on for ages!
whats wrong?
Any help much appreciated / Yhanks
Alexis

I was so relieved to find this topis. My iPhoto 2.0.1 is about to drive me insane. The crazy part is I have a new MacBook but no way to transfer the huge iPhoto Library so I am stuck using this old version on my old Mac for a while.
I am trying to take this advice but even closing all the film rolls is taking an eternity. Like swimming through quicksand. Is there a shortcut to close them all at once?
Also, a very basic question that Help is no Help in answering: the way I've always done it is import from my camera, immediately sort into a new album (one for each month), then within that album edit out the photos I don't want. But is it true that all the deleted photos stay untouched in the Library? Is that why everything is sooooooo &%$#*@ slow? It says I have over 5000 images. Does the album function as a sort of alias? Will all my troubles melt away when I start using iPhoto 6? (or whatever's on my new MacBook purchased in December???)

I imported some 24P HD videos from my DSLR to Aperture but these videos do not show up in iMovie '09 for editing purposes. Although my previous 24P HD Videos from iPhoto '09 show up. Why can't I access these videos stored in Aperture library? I assumed that like  the videos in iPhoto, I would be able to access the videos in Aperture through iMovie. Come on Apple! I am starting to get frustrated with your products here. And this is saying a lot when I have been using and loving apple products for the last 4 years.

Hi. My camera is a Canon 600D. And yes my videos are stored in the Aperture library and they are not referenced. Even then I tried to select all the videos in Aperture and clicked 'consolidate masters' and there was a messge that said all 'none of the files are referenced',... so they didn't need consolidating.
I also tried preferences> export> external video editor > choose > iMovie. And then right click on the video to edit with imovie. Even then the video didn't show up in iMovie. It seems like the only option for me is to import the videos directly to iMovie which means there will be two versions of the same file stored in my computer eating up space.

If iPhoto is no more usable why did you let me buy it few month ago on my iPhone  ?? Good job !

That is frustrating. You are right. The new Photos.app is not yet a sufficient substitute iPhoto.
And there was no clear warning with the upgrade to iOS that iPhoto would no longer work. Only after upgrading to iOS 8 could we find out, that iPhoto was gone.
In your case it may be too late now to downgrade back to iOS 7. It was possible right after the release of iOS 8, but by now Apple stopped signing the firmware, so you will find no trustworthy installers.
I think the best route is to send feedback to the developers, so the next Photos releases will bring back more of the advanced, missing iPhoto features.  Apple brought already the Camera Roll back to Photos.

When I want to change date of picture, iPhoto close the program. Why?

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
    Post back with the result.

  • Cannot Sync iPhoto Subscriptions to Apple TV - why?

    Hello
I have subscribed to few other people's .Mac Galleries where the photos now appear in my iPhoto gallery under Subscriptions. They automatically update when they add new photos or make changes.
However they don't appear to be syncing to my Apple TV. They are showing as available to sync in iTunes as an available albumn to sync and am able to move the subscribed albums to the top of the list.
They are not showing up on the Apple TV. Surly if it was not possible they would not appear in iTunes under the photo tab of the Apple TV. I know there is an update coming soon, but I want these photos to appear in this way rather than going to .Mac menu on the updated version etc.
Has anyone else been able to do this? Am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks in advance

But this 'appears' to be possible well before the AppleTV Take 2 update was announced.
If this is the case, then why does it appear as an available album in iTunes as available to sync? There is no error that appears. This is to view select albums from galleries, not the whole lot.
I am aware of what the Take2 will bring re .Mac, but think this is different to the update that will be appearing soon.
Perhaps you may wish to try this, subscribe to a .Mac gallery (just one album) this will bring it to your iPhoto library, and then check in itunes for albums to sync and it will appear, but not on AppleTV...

  • After installed iPhoto upgrader tool, photos software is still asking for IPhoto needs to be update, why?

    MAC OSX :- 10.10.3
    IPHOTO :- 9.6
I have recently updated my os x 10.10.2 to 10.10.3 and found iPhoto software dose'nt work. there is some other application appears called photos like iPhone, when i am trying to open it, asking to marge iPhoto library. so tried to marge but it is asking to upgrade iPhoto through a iPhoto Library Upgrader tool. i have installed that but problem is still there - needs to upgrade your iPhoto library. why?

You need to upgrade the application not the Library. 10.10.3 requires v9.6.1
Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

  • I have a Mac Desktop that is running OS 10.10.1, I am trying to upgrade my iPhoto to 9.6, but nothing happens after the perceived download.  I even retarted and still my iPhoto is in not available, why?

My iMac = Desktop 20", 2GHz processor, 4 GB memory, running OS 10.10.1
I am tring to upgrade my iPhoto and when I follow Apple's instructions on how to do so, the download seems to occur, I click on the upgrade package and nothing changes.
I have restarted the computer after the download and still no change.
    What am I missing?

    leonie,
Thanks for the reply, I finally got it solved.  I had to find the upgrade in the Utilities folder of the Finder...

  • In Iphoto 11 9.4.2 - why can't I see the filepath of my photo in the information panel?

I recently upgraded with a new Macbook Pro.  It runs IPhoto 11 9.4.2 and used to love to look at the Info for a photo file.  I would click on "more info" and get sie and image path.  It would also have the original file name (usually a number assigned from the sd card), rather than the name I had changed the file to, like "at the beach".
Now I hit Command I and the info panel slides in on the right and I just can't see these things anymore!  It's like the information panel is taken up with "faces" and Places", neither of which I use much.
Am I missing an option to view this info?  Where did it go?

actually - I just found out on another thread that perhaps "file path" was never on the information panel anyway.  I wonder if I am confusing it with the info panel I see in iphoto library Manager.
And I just hovered my mouse over the "at the beach" file name in the information panel, and discovered the origianal file name showed up.  And if you hover your mouse of the date, you see "taken, modified and and imported".
Still wish I could see the file path, but now wondering if I ever did in iPhoto.  But hope this reply of my own helps others that may be wondering where some of the stuff went.

  • In iphoto, what are themes and why are they not loaded?

I uploaded some pics to my iphoto as usual. then went to print and it stated that i needed themes to continue.
I did have the HD swapped out due to the recall for my model. The ML 10.8, was installed and all the software
rest of the back up was done via the timemachine. I really have been have trouble with little things other than
printing from iPhoto.. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you, I will try that. It seems that since we had the HD replaced we come up on these types of things that just dont connect.
    Thank you for the suggestion.

  • I have burned a DVD using I-DVD with pictures from Iphoto and I am wondering why the metadata that includes the Faces tags are not showing up in the original files on the burned DVD?

    Request for help

Faces is not a standard and has no place to go in metadata - in iPhoto you can export including much of the metadata by chencking all of the boxes when you export - no idea at all what iDVD does - better to ask in the iDVD forum

  • IPhoto Book thumbnail...why is there a grey spot showing?

I just finished building a iPhoto Book. My photos that I used are high resolution photographs. No sign of any low resolution whatsoever. When I scroll through the thumbnails of the book, there is a page (which has three high res photos) where the top photo is located....a big grey box is in its place. However, when I look at the actual book itself (below the thumbnails), the photo is there in all of its glory. When I buy the book, will there be a big blank spot where the photo is supposed to be...or will the photo be there? Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

It means the image is flagged.  When you "roll over" the corner of an image you have the option to flag it for quick access at a later time.  Open the image and click the flag to unflag it.

  • File sizes vary when importing from iPhoto to different iPads.  Why?

I'm running Mavericks with iphoto 9.5.1 and using iTunes 11.1.3.  I have a iphoto library of 6830 pictures.  We upload these pictures to mulitiple ipads.  This xmas I got a couple new ipads to replace old ones and upon syncing the photos to the new ipads the file size is much larger than on the older ipads.
For instance.  My photos that sync'd over to my iPad 2 was around 9 GB.  Now on my ipad air it takes up 22.72.
I have a similar experience with my wifes new iPad Mini.
Any ideas or suggestions on what is going on?

Rather supports the guess. The smaller screen means smaller images are synced. When you sync with a device the images are optimised for that device. Those optimised versions are stored in the iPod Photo Cache.

  • I cannot understand any of the instructions to email my photos from iPhoto - I don't know why it will not work.  I believe I have tried all the answers I have seen on this site (which are confusing to me).  HELP!

I have been trying to email someone some photos (only 10) from iPhoto.  That darn pop-up window keeps popping up, telling me to check my email server, etc. I have NO idea what to do.  I have tried doing what other posters have suggested - to no avail.  Is there someone who can tell me what to do using non-tech language?  This is SO frustrating...

    Hi ..
It's just a matter of giving iPhoto your email reader.
    Quit iPhoto if it's open.
    Open the Mac Mail app.
From the Mail menu bar click Mail > Preferences then select the General tab.
Select your mail accoun tfrom the:   Default email reader   pop  up menu.
    Relaunch iPhoto.
Select a photo then go to the iPhoto menu bar click Share > Email

  • Copying large iPhoto library to NAS drive - why is it so difficult?

I have a 2009 iMac, and a large iPhoto library (about 15000 images, circa 90 GB in size). I am trying to transfer the library from the iMac's hard drive to a 3TB Western Digital NAS drive (connected via Gigabit Ethernet) that I've just bought, and it's a nightmare.
I've tried a variety of different approaches - dragging and dropping the iPhoto Library package file onto the pictures directory of the new drive, just exporting the images contained in the 'Masters' subdirectory of the package file, and now using iPhoto Library Manager to attempt to pull the images from my current library into a new iPhoto library that I've created on the new drive. Each way seems to be incredibly lengthy - not just several hours, or even overnight (which I'm prepared for), but days and days - with the iPhoto Library Manager approach the import had been running for about 24 hours and was less than a third of the way through before iPhoto crashed and it stalled.
What is more, I also seem to be unable to delete any of the incomplete package files from the directory on the new drive - again, the progress bar just sits there reading 'Deleting 1 file' and doesn't really do anything. The new drive is formatted as Mac Share, and I can otherwise connect to it and browse through the various directories on there, save small files to it etc, without a problem.
What am I doing wrong? Many thanks for any suggestions.
    S

Hi Terence, have read a few of your posts in similar threads this morning and am v relieved I did as I was definitely going to do this all wrong!
Having read your advice on referenced libraries, multiplie libraries, and NAS (ie all being bad) I have come up with the following planned approach for my situation but I would like to run it by you if thats ok?
I don't think I am particularly unusual in my scenario - I am an amateur user who has a personal photo lirbary from the last 10 years and expects it to grow pretty darn big in the future given we now seem to take 100 photos a month since having  baby last year!
It already takes up 60GB (50%) of my SSD and so it has to go somewhere...the question is where...
However, where I think i may be less usual is that I don't really use events and additional tagging, I just like iPhoto as a viewer, organiser and slideshow.
From your advice to date I now understand that:
    - I can't have my library on my NAS (had been plan 1!)
    - Referenced libraries are strongly discouraged (plan 2)
    - Using multiple lirbaries to split it down is also discouraged (plan 3, although less beneficial given none of them can go on NAS).
    - I should use an ext local HD connected to my laptop when I need to access my photos. (should therefore be plan A but....)
The problem I have though is that using a local ext HD is the least appreciated option by my wife as she hates things being plugged into the laptop in the evening when she kidnaps the laptop for reading her forums, and will likely annoy me if I need to keep getting it from a cupboard, and can't stay in the living room with the little one roaming around and grabing everything gadget I own!
Plus, the most likely value in old photos is going to be that one unexepcted moment in the future when I want to bring one up to show a friend and I am away from the house....
SO, what I am thinking of doing is splitting the situation in 2:
    - most of my organising, deleting, managing etc as well as obviously my importing, will happen within the first 6 months of taking a photo. Therefore I will have an iPhoto managed library for that. It will live on my local SSD and all will be good.
    - and I will export all older photos to my NAS where they will the live from then on (and continue to move the 6 month expiry photos to this each month or two depending on size constraints). I will try and use events in iPhoto to organise everything before I do this, so that the folders will be useful and useable outside of iphoto on the NAS if I ever need to find anything to view.
    - I will then re-import these photos into a second library in iPhoto so I keep the slideshow and viewing capabilities (not sure whether this needs to be a separate library, but probably makes things easier for me to see and manage).
If the links in this ever do get broken with iPhoto I am not sure this matters for me? - I could just re-import each folder and select the event name as the folder name. As mentioned, I don't tend to go into minute detail with events, so there won't be that many (ok, in 30 years time this may be more painful...but I imaging by then we will all be machines and there wil be a new way!)
And if I find I also want access to my <6month photos on NAS as well then I will keep a duplicate export of that on NAS (not managed as a libary within iPhoto) and continue to overwrite it with an export each 1-4 weeks depending on how I much I use things.
What do you think? Have you seen anyone take this approach, and can you see any obvious pitfalls from your experience that I am still missing?
    Your advice is much appreciated,
    cheers
    Jon
A final point is that I have lots of photos from my pre-Mac days and these need to be brought together and consolidated into iPhoto and organised before I do my split. I was going to buy iphoto library manager as apprently it is good at finding the duplicates (I will have 1000's due to lazy copying discipline when i was younger) and I was going to use it for managing libraries anyway, but it is $30 and now I don't need all its functions I think I will just use a bespoke programme for finding any duplicates. I don't want to hijack the thread for this, but any recommendations would obviously be appreciated!

  • In iPhoto'09 why can it not forget previous image names?

    iPhoto'09 - 27" iMac, 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 12gig RAM, OSX10.8.4, 1 TBHD
    In iPhoto'09 I renamed 29 images using Photos/Batch Change.
I then exported the images full size to my desktop folder.
Deleted the 29 images in iPhoto09 and emptied the iPhoto Trash.
    Quit iPhoto09.
    Holding Option+Command, I re-opened iPhoto09.
Checked all check boxes to rebuild the database.
Opened the 29 images on my desktop into Adobe Bridge CS5.
Rearranged their order and Batch Renamed all 29.
    Saved results and Quit Bridge.
Imported the 29 images back into iPhoto09.
iPhoto09 continues to name the images the old iPhoto name and order.
Why does iPhoto'09 continue to remember the old names of the 29?
I can't get it to recognize the new names and order.

My problem was that iPhoto assigns IPTC.ObjectName if one changes the file names within iPhoto.
There is no way to change filenames in iPhoto. All you can do is add a title. So iPhoto is not changing filename it is adding to IPTC metadata.
