Iphoto 2 / 3000 photos /  REALLY slow

Hello. I am currently using iphoto 2 on my g5 running tiger. my iphoto program has been giving me such a difficult time lately. no matter what i want it to do, it takes forever and the spinning beachball shows up. could this have anything to do with having over 3,000 photos in it? is there a limit? if not, what could it be? thanks so much in advance.
dayna.

Restart iPhoto while holding the option+shift keys until you see the prompt to confirm that you want to rebuild the photo library database.
Other things you can do is to minimize the number of photos that are displayed upon opening. From the View menu, select "Film Rolls". You will see the individual film rolls dislplayed each with a disclosure triangle. Option-click on any of the "open" ones to close them all. Then just open individually the ones you want ot view.
Turn off "drop shadows" in the iPhoto preferences.
Another important consideration is how much free space is on your main drive partition.

  • I Photo really slow!

Everytime when I open iphoto my computer slows drastically down.
I have about 2500 pics stored. Is it because there are way too many pics or the reason is somewhere else? (I have ibook g4)
Would appreciate any opinipns and suggestions how to fix my problem.
    Thanks

    Tom
In the process of upgrading or converting a library - for instance, from v5 to v6, if iPhoto comes across a file that it can't parse, it goes into the Recovered folder. In most cases the file is just fine and can be added back to iPhoto, but some may be corrupted. If you're sure that there are no usable files in the Recovered Folder then yes, you can trash it.

  • IPhoto 6 goes really, really slow

    Hi,
my iPhoto 6 is going really, really slow, and as soon as I open iPhoto 6 other open programs go slow too. First I thought it must be the size of the pics but with other Photo editing programs everything seems to go with normal speed.
Has anyone got a solution to this problem? Has anyone made similar experiences? What kind of procedures would you recommend?
Thank you very much in advance for your help!
    Kind Regards,
    Xbal

Actually, according to the System Requirements, 256mb is the bare minimum of RAM for OS X and iLife 6. I know this is true because (check my specs) I run with this, and my iPhoto library has 5,000 photos. But yes, it is slow. Switching between iPhoto and Safari takes a minute. Photoshop Elements 4 is even slower. I hope to upgrade to a gig soon, and I refuse to run the iLife and Quicktime updates before then. Anyway, the latest QT update is just too buggy.
But my point is, it does work. I have made several movies in iMovie and iDVD and even burned the DVDs. I don't see how 512mb would cause the Mac to grind to a halt.

  • IPhoto - really slow - please advise

It takes forever to open, and if I want to use a photo in a document it will again take a painfully slow amount of time to be able to do this - which really slows down my working day.
    I have iphoto '11.
    I have about 8 750 photos.
I'm wondering if I need to move albums to a separate disk?  Is it the number of photos slowing the system down?
In terms of my hard disk:
Under storage it says that I have 51.81 GB free out of 319.21GB
    30.61GB of this is photos.
    Memory  4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Processor  2.3 GHz Intel Core i5
Can anyone advise me of what is happening or what I can do/check to help the process?
    Many thanks.

Is your iPhoto library on your system drive or on an external drive?
Did this slowness start all of a sudden or gradually?  What did you do, right before this problem started? Did you install or upgrade software? Import new photos or videos?
Do you sync with any online services, like Facebook or Flickr, that might be slowing things down by trying to connect to a server?
    I have about 8 750 photos.
iPhoto should be able to cope with so many photos and the free disk space should suffice.
As a first diagnostic measure I'd try to test with a new iPhoto library - create one for testing and import a few photos. If iPhoto is performing better with a new library, your current library may need repairing or rebuilding, or you may have imported a corrupted image or video with your last import.
Old Toad's post describes how to rebuld your iPhoto library:  Rebuild iPhoto Version 11

There is nothing wrong with your Dell, it will work fine with any MacbookPro. I have been using Dell displays for over 12 years with many different Mac models. I have two 21" Ultra Sharp displays working side by side to design a Keynote presentation right now.
    The issue your having is with the way Keynote  takes control of the video output to both displays, it sends the presentation signal to one and the presenter display to the other, this is set up in;
    Keynote preferences > Presenter display.
If you want to show a wesite or another app on  either display,  use application switcher:
press the the  command key on the keyboard, then the tab key; a row of applications will show what applications are running, choose which one you want to show. Use command  > tab to return to Keynote.

After restore I did restore from back up only,  as I didn't want to end up without contacts details on my phone. If I restore as new device how do I get my all contacts? Still will have to use back up? Sorry if it sounds like I don't know what i am doing, i just have no one to ask who would know. Thank you

  • I have iMac and need a good photo editing program to use.  Reviews say aperture runs really slow with Lion, any suggestions?

I need a program where I can remove objects and touch up dead grass, etc.

Reviews say Aperture runs really slow with Lion, any suggestions?
To add on to Corky02 answer:
The recent Aperture release AP 3.3.x is very efficient, both on Lion and Mountain Lion. But you need a decent hardware to support it. The older Macs will have problems with the storage and CPU requirements. For good performance on large raw images plenty of RAM is important, at least 4GB, but 8GB would be much better, and your library should be on a fast disk, preferably on an internal drive. And don't let the system drive get too full.
Many reports about Aperture being slow are due to putting the Aperture library onto slow disks or acessing  the original image files over the network, insufficient RAM, or corrupted or  ill-designedAperture databases.
Aperture excels at all kinds of image processing that can be considered image developement - raw processing and color/lighting adjustments, but does not do compositing. If you are shooting raw and want professional image developement I'd recommend to do this in Aperture and not in iPhoto - you will have much more control over this in Aperture (after a steep learning curve). You can also  repair and retouch the image to correct minor blamishes. For graphics compositing and inpainting you can set up an external editor and send your images from Aperture to this external editor - any of the editors Corky recommended would be o.k. for this.
To see, if you will want the advanced image processing in Aperture or the easy to use, more basic options in iPhoro will be sufficient to you have a look at the Aperture User manual, or the tutorial on the support page: Aperture Support
But Aperture is a professional apllication, not "plug and play". You should only consider it, if you are willing to spend some time on learning to use it properly and are willing to work your way through the manual.

  • IPhoto '08 Missing 3000+ Photo's

I upgrade to Leopard Last Friday and have had no problems with iPhoto until this morning. When I opened it, I noticed that instead of my usual 3000+ photo's and related events, I had 100 photo's in (3) events. I checked and confirmed that the iPhoto Library is still the same size as before and when opened it, I found all of the photo's there. I restarted iPhoto holding down the Option+Command keys and tried all of the options to rebuild and/or fix the database to no avail. I know that I can manually re-import all of the photo's, however, they are mixed between the "Originals" and "Modified" meaning that it will take hours upon hours to sift through the right ones. Can anyone please give me some input into this in order to get my iPhoto up and running as usual.
BTW: The night before I ran the Disk Utility and checked/repaired my permissions and verified the disks. Everything was okay. Also, I removed some library files that belonged to some old programs. These files were not in any way related to iLife and iWork. I did not in any way move or modify anything related to iPhoto!

This sounds like a corrupted library file. Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums back.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • IPhoto 6.0.4 Lost 3000 Photos!

Help, when my sister updated her iPhoto on Friday the update took a long time (spinning beach ball) then when it was complete it appears as if my library is gone. Well, not completely, out of 3000+ photos, the library now only displays 770 thumbnails with a question mark instead of a photo. The file info is there: name, file size and photo size, but no pic.
No, she didn't have her backup system working, but she does have the photos on her iPod. What we find tho is that we're not sure how to get the photos off the iPod... the photo folder from the iPod contains files that iPhoto doesn't know how to read.
HELP! This is a HUGE problem if 6.0.4 eats photos.
    iMac G5 2ghz, 1GIG ram   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Check inside the iPhoto Library/Originals folder to make sure all of the pictures are there in the subfolders representing the rolls in the library. What's happened is that the library has been bitten by the Library6.iPhoto dB file bug. You can try rebuilding the library by launching iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and following the instructions to rebuild the library. Select all of the options presented.
If that doesn't work, I'm skeptical that it will but worth a try nevertheless, move the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library folder to the desktop. Then move the iPhoto Library folder to the Trash.
Now open iPhoto and it will ask you to create a new library. When that library is open, drag the Originals folder into iPhoto's open window. This will give you a new library with the same rolls as the old one. The roll dates, however, will probably be different on a number of the rolls. But you will have all your photos. In the future you might want to follow the tip and then end of my signature. It will help you avoid this. But it will have to be current.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • HT201317 Photo Stream really slow from Iphone???

Photo Stream moving really slow from Iphone.  Took 12 hours for one photo to move from cameral roll to photo stream and then several hours for it to move to computer.

You can't automatically "push" the photo stream photos from your iPad photo stream folder back to your photo stream.  You have to get copies of these photos to your iPad's camera roll as new photos for them to be uploaded to your photo stream.  There are a couple of ways to do this:
Open the photos one at a time on your iPad and take a screenshot.  This will add a new low resolution copy of the photo to the camera roll, which will then upload to your photo stream.
Email the photos a few at a time to yourself, then save the attached photos to your camera roll.  This will add a copy of the photo at full resolution to your camera roll and upload to photo stream.
Use an app like PhotoSync, which will allow you to wirelessly transfer full resolution copies of all your old photos to your computer all at once.  Once on your computer you then have to delete these photos from your camera roll and use PhotoSync to transfer them back from your computer to your camera roll again.  These will be the original resolution and will upload to your photo stream.  (You need an app like this because iTunes will not transfer photos back to your camera roll, where they must be in order to add to your photo stream.)

I'm not sure, but I know it's not recommended to upgrade to iOS 8 on anything older than an iPhone 5. I only lost my music playlists and music that was on my phone, but that music is also on my iTunes, not the playlists though, and I don't want to go through ALL my iTunes library to fix it either... But it seems I don't have a choice right now.
Whatever you do, do NOT upgrade to iCloud Drive, keep iCloud till OS X Yosemite comes out, if your computer is a Mac. I also just noticed that all my documents on my phone are gone from Pages, BUT if I go on the iCloud website they are still there. Hopefully it will all work itself out when I can update my macbook pro to OS X Yosemite.
If you backed up your phone and all your purchases off your iPhone prior to trying to upgrade you should be fine... But I'm not even remotely sure.

  • Coverflow really slow and duplicated photo library after updating

Hi!, I've been having these 2 issues stated in the titled since I updated my iPhone 4 yesterday after many "3200" errors. When I could finally pass the "Unpacking process", and just before finishing the update, I got a weird error (if I remember correctly it was something like -2 or so). I didn't pay much attention to it because my phone booted normally.
After that I configured the iOS5 pre-settings, and for my surprise, any of my apps, videos or music weren't there. I connected my device again, resynced and hopefully, the restore option popped up, and it went smooth with no errors. The first thing I noted was that some of my albums were lacking the cover art. I connected again and found that in itunes, my songs displayed the cover art correctly, but in the iphone they didn't. I replaced the missing covers and when checked the cover-flow, it was really slow! it is not fluid and freezes my device. What could it be? I think it's something to do with the cache or something...
And the other issue is more simple: after restoring, I got an extra folder called "Pictures" which contains the exact same pictures I sync from my computer (they are normally in the "Photo Library") How can I sort out my pictures?
PS: Here is a video I uploaded showing the 1st issue: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcAEuN6tDvs please note the last cover I show in the video, some of the covers displays as shown (glossy pixelated, don't know if it got something to do with the issue)
    Thanks!

I also noticed a bug on Iphone 4 ios 5.0.1. In Ipod application when viewed in landscape position so slow and then kicks me to the springboard(desktop). Sorry for my English, i'm Ukrainian. I hope this problem fix in next update. Thanks

  • Io6 update lost Youtube in my iPad and is really slow and Facebook is slow and don't what to upload photo

io6 update lost Youtube in my iPad and is really slow and Facebook is slow and don't what to upload photo the iPad is slow to.

Youtube is no longer integrated with iOS. You can download the app fromt he app store.. it's designed for iPhone... but states that it works with iPad.
As for running slow... trying holding down the power and home button at the same time for 10 seconds to do a hard reset.
Also.. if you double tap your home button it will bring up a small window across the bottom of your screen... this is called the multitasker.
Hold your finger one of the apps til they jiggle... then tap the red minus button to kill the app. If you kill them all this should help your ipad run alot faster.
    Good luck
