Iphoto 2, 4 and 6
I have iPhoto 2.0.1 currently on my computer. I have a disk of pictures from my husband's G4 computer with iPhoto 4.? that my computer won't open. The message says 'you can't open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto...'. My dilemma is: will either iPhoto 4 or 5 (from the iLife 4 or 5 versions) be compatible with the iPhoto 6 that my husband has just installed from iLife 6? We would like compatablility. Is this possible?

Transfer photos, not iPhoto libraries. The purpose of iPhoto is to manage the photo library of a single user, and not the library from some different user on the same, or some other computer. If you want to share photos among different users, then export a copy of the photo(s) from the source library, transfer the JPG images, and import them at the receiving user account with whatever version of iPhoto is available to that user.

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
iPhoto 8 (09) and earlier- run the options indicated
iPhoto 9 (11) and later- run Option #4 to rebuild the database

Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager (iPhoto 8 or earlier or IPhoto 11 and later) and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the
File ➙ Rebuild Library (iPhoto 8 or earlier)
or
Library ➙ Rebuild Library (iPhoto 9 or later)
menu option to rebuild the library.
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

How to use iPhoto on Mac and iOS in conjunction
I'm using iPhoto on both my Mac, iPhone and iPad. After the new Photo Stream and the new iPhoto iOS app has been released I think it is all started to get a little confusing. Here is some of my thoughts.
1) When I delete a photo from my Photo Stream the photo gets deleted on all my devices. Nice. On my Mac, iPhoto is for instance creating a "mar. 2012 Photo Stream" event, where all photos from the Photo Stream is keept -- also the deleted once. That's OK. On my Mac I can cleanup these events by deleting the unwanted photos. All my photos are synced to iPad but it seems, that I cannot cleanup these events on iPhoto on my iPad. Is that right? I'm able to "hide" the photos from the events, but that does not delete them -- and they are still visible on my Mac after their are synced.
2) I have an "Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit" making me able to import photos from my camera to my iPad, which I do daily when I'm on vacation. I thought that I could just import the photos to my iPad, put them in an event/album, edit/retouch them -- and when my iPad gets near my Mac the events/albums gets synced to my iPhoto on my Mac (without having to import them to the Mac manually). But it seems that the Camera app on my iPad is just putting the imported Photos in the "Last Import" album. How is Apple thinking we should do this? I cannot find a way to move them to an Event.
3) Generally, the difference between Albums and Events in iPhoto iOS seems unclear. After the new iPhoto for iOS was released, I was hoping that I could edit, retouch and choose the best photos from an Events and put them in an Album. I can create a Journal with these photos but that is not always what I want. For instance if I would like to make a slideshow for my TV, it would be nice to have a clean album where only the best photos from an event. How is Apple thinking this should be done?
Please tell me how you are using iPhoto on Mac and iOS. For me it does not work perfectly.Not only do they not work perfectly, they do not work together at all. Pretty much the only thing they share is a name. They are quite independent apps. Editing history on one can not be carried over to the other, so you can't start working on shots on one device and continue on the other. Events, Albums etc have no relation with each other and so on. Perhaps the next version of iPhoto (for either OS) will move them closer together but at this time they have no relationship at all.

Can I include external drives to be backed up using Time Machine? Not only do I want to back up my IMac, but I have several extenal drives for one iPhoto, one iTunes and one for other files & documents. How do I know if they are included in the backup process?

I am trying to burn DVDs from iPhoto slideshows. My pictures number in the hundreds and we know that iPhoto captures 99 and then "starts over". This plays fine from the Mac Book but glitches arise on the DVD when playing it on a DVD player. Any suggestions on how to overcome the 99 "Chapter limitation" that IPhoto has? Has anyone heard or tried an app called Vilisoft? I read good things but I am not sure if it will do what I want.

You can have up to 8 or 9 slideshows per menu. If you add a sub menu reduce that by 1 and add 8 more to the sub menu. The top menu can have links to up to 8 or so submenus (depends on the theme) and each submenu can have up to 8 or so slideshows.
However, converting a very large slideshow to a QT movie as Terence suggested does not envoke the 99 slide limit in iDVD. It just becomes a single video/movie file. So you should not have a problem with exporting at the large size, 720 x 540,
and dragging the resulting file into the iDVD menu being sure to avoid any drop zones.

I am new to IPhoto 9.51 and I think I missed a step when I uploaded my vacation pictures. I uploaded pictures but did not import them into the library. They are in L\last imported only. How can I get them into events?
If the Photos are under 'Last Import' or 'Last N Months' then they are in the Library somewhere, just not where you are expecting them to be. We know this as both Last Import and 'Last N Months' are not places, just listings of elements in the the Library.
The two most common reasons that they can't be found is either an incorrect date on the camera or the Sorting (View Menu -> Sort Photos - or Sort Events, as appropriate) has changed.
Quick route to find them: Right-click on one of the images in Last Import and select 'Show Event'. This will bring you to the image in the Library. -
I just created a new iPhoto library with holding the option key down and then opening iPhoto with version 7.1.5. I changed the name of the first library to iPhoto library 1 and now I all my photos are gone. My operating system is Mavericks.

And you seriously need to backup your iPhoto library and purchase and install iPhoto '11 version 9.5.x from the App store and download and run the iPhoto library upgraded \then run the new iPhoto - 7.1.5 is not fully compatible with Mavericks

On images that are long and narrow horizontally, iPhoto truncates them and automatically crops off part of each end of the image. the thumbnail has a jagged, serrated edge at both ends. How can I make it stop?
Then I do not get your problem - you can import the photo - you can find the photo and you can edit and save the photo - what more do you want?
By defination thumbnails are small images to help you find the large image - the large image is fine and you can find it fine - and you know it is only showing part of the image because of the "jagged ends"
If you think think that iPhoto should display long thumbnails suggest to Apple - iPhoto menu ==> provide iPhoto Feedback
as to your digital photoframe - contact them - in general gital photos frames display one and only one aspect ratio and any photo that is not in that aspect ratio will be modified to display - either cropped to the proper size for the frame or have 'White" space added to fill the frame - that function is totally controled by the Digital Photo frame and any otptions you have will be in the manual or on the support web site for the frame - to put it in old film terms - you can not put an 8x10 print in a 5x7 frame unless you cut the photo down (or a 8x15 photo in an 8x10 frame either)

Slideshow Video doesn't play in iPhoto 9.5 and Mavericks 10.9
I have just upgraded to iPhoto 9.5 and Mavericks 10.9
(from Snow Leopard, and iPhoto '09).
I am trying to do an iPhoto Slideshow.
I chose one of the themes, pick a music, and start "Preview".
When the slideshow gets to a video clip, the screen goes black, while the music continues to play.
In my old setup, I was able to see the video clips in the slideshow during "preview" or "play".
Any advice? Thank you!
I am trying to organize holiday photos/videos into slideshows that can be easily viewed by family.I re-installed Mavericks, and this video/slideshow problem went away!

you can't open photo library using this version of iphoto. you have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iphoto. please quit and use latest version of iphoto. iphoto 11 is installed.

If so, as your post isn't clear, it may be a bogus message caused by a corrupt database.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

moved iphoto to trash and downloaded and installed new one but still tells me to prepare and upgrade it when I have done it 2 or 3 times now... how do i get it to open so I can upload my photos?

What exactly dod you have and have you done?
What version of iPhoto did you have and what version do you now have? Of the OS? If you are upgrading from iphoto '08 or earlier did you download and RUN the iphoto library upgrader?

Can anyone help me. I have iPhoto 9.2 and Mac OS X 10.7.2.
Every time I open iPhoto 9.2 and try to go to photo stream iPhoto quits unexpectedly. When I reopen I get "iPhoto has detected inconsistencies in your library. Please click Repair to avoid any potential problems."
I have read plenty of the posts on the subject and it seems that deleting the "3ivx" fixed the problem. I looked at the detaied reports and see where it says "
Library/Application Support/3ivx" etc..
On my report it says "/Library/Application Support/iLifeMediaBrowser/*/iLMBiPhoto8Plugin". Does this help with an answer?I am also having this crashing problem. I am running lion on a 2010 mac mini. My iPhoto library is kept on an external drive. I just upgraded to iPhoto 11 and everytime I try to enable photo stream the app crashes. After import into iPhoto, originals disappear and only thumbnails remain
After importing photos into iPhoto, working on them and then closing iPhoto, when reopening iPhoto only the thumbnails remain and can't find the originals anywhere on the computer via a Spotlight. Ran Disk Utility and no problems found on HD. Have rebuilt the iPhoto Library. This has happened on multiple occasions.
Here's a little more background on this problem. JPGs originally were imported from a CD and had camera given filenames, like 20110428-DSC_0118.jpg. After the import into iPhoto the application was closed. The next day when iPhoto was opened and any of the just imported photos doubled click on, a dialog box similar to this appeared that changed with the different file names:
I did a little research and discovered that the camera that had given filenames were identical to those by a different group of photos from a different camera that already resided in the iPhoto Library! So I imported them again from the CD except this time I used the utility, Better Finder Renamer 8, to batch change the names to something completely different, like Mary_Spring_2011_Visit_001.jpg, and so on. Those were imported into iPhoto. iPhoto was closed and opened and everything was OK. The next day iPhoto was opened and the newly imported photos when double clicked, the same exact dialog box as above opened and the only newly named photos that could be found were the thumbnails. None of the original full-res images can be found doing a Spotlight search of the entire computer. So to answer your second question the same dialog box shows up. I'm confounded as to where they are going. Plus, why would the original filename that was changed be showing up in the dialog box?? That is why Disk Utility was run to see if there was any directory damage. But no problems were found. -
I just installed last versión of iphoto and it erased my iPhoto events. Now i dont have iphoto library anymore and i only have my events in iPhone and in MobileMe gallery. How can i download and migrate events in MobileMe gallery to events in iPhoto ?
O also installed lion before and as i had filevault activated y lost my user information in timemachine. So, i have a useless backup. I only have events in iPhone ( due i didnt sync photos) and in MobileMe gallery, and i already migrate to iCloud. So?
