IPhoto 2 Capacity

Just curious if anybody is aware what the iPhoto 2 library capacity is. I have 4049 pictures in the library and I just tried to import more but they're only showing up in my last import section.
Really don't want to lose my pictures just because iPhoto starts cycling them out or something.

If images appear in your "Last Import" section, then they must exist in your photo library. Click on "Photo Library" (above Last Import), and select "Film Rolls" from the View menu. Then, Arrange Photos by Film Roll (again from the View menu). Your last imported images will be among the last (bottom) roll added to the list.

Those are the options - more space is more space.
Moving the iPhoto Library is simple:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Iphoto storage capacity

Is there a limit on the number of photos that can be stored in iPhoto? in each iPhoto library? in the aggregate of all associated iPhoto libraries?

Is there a limit on the number of photos that can be stored in iPhoto?
    Yes - 1,000,000
    in each iPhoto library?
    Yes - 1,000,000
in the aggregate of all associated iPhoto libraries?
No because there is no such thing as an "associated iPhoto library" - each library stands alone - iPhoto only works with a single librtary at one time and knows nothing of any other libraries.

  • After Update to iPhoto 9.4.3 some pictures shown black

I'm working in a iMac with OSX 10.9.5. I've just updated my iPhoto with a newer version of iLife 11 to iPhoto 9.4.3 step by step as described here from Old Todd: running 10.9.5 OS X and iLife 11, now can't use iPhoto The capacity of the iPhoto library is around 180 GB with around 25.000 Objects. First everything seems to be fine. I could see all rolls, albums, calendar etc. But than i discovered, that in some cases, I could see the thumbnails but when I do a double click on it, I can only see a totally black frame. When I'm going to export that frame and look for the result, the original picture was exported correctly.
So, I tried to repair permissions and rebuild database. But this won't fix it. Than I tried to recreate thumbnails. After that, she the application is still open, everything seems to be fixed. But when I quit the application and open-up again, the same problem appears. Sometimes I can see the pictures for a second and they seemed to be squeezed somehow. What can I do? Any idea?
    Thanks for helping.

I suggest that you read Terence's post in this thread and try the fixes he suggests

Re: After Update to iPhoto 9.4.3 some pictures shown blackin response to frank251 | This helped me
There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
    1. Permissions in the Library: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
    2. Minor Database corruption: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    3. A Damaged Photo: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). (On iPhoto 11 this option is under the File -> Reveal in Finder.) Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
    4. A corrupted iPhoto Cache: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/ Library/ Caches...
    5. A corrupted preference file: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
If none of these help: As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • IPhoto 11 -- Destructive crops

    --- Destructive Cropping ---
    Using iPhoto 11 9.2.3 / Mac OS 10.6.8
Since the release of iPhoto 8 Apple has heavily marketed iPhoto's capacity for non-destructive editing. I find this is true at least with respect to setting white and black points, exposure, cropping, etc ... but recently I find that some iPhoto crops are non-editable (i.e. destructive—which  for once is an apt term!) I know that iPhoto is cropping the original because I've opened the original JPGs in my iPhoto library and they are NOT the dimensions of the original photos. If it weren't for back up copies, I'd be steamed
iPhoto does not destructively crop the majority of the time. Initially I experimented carefully on a dozen scratch photos to be sure. I've been able to crop and recrop any photo numerous times. But indeed, something does trigger an occasional destructive crop—and I have no idea what.
The first indication of a destructive crop is that the Revert to Original button is disabled. And in edit mode I no longer see the original photo surrounded by crops marks. That's how I first discovered the issue. I thought, "Where are my crop guides. After a destructive crop, logically, they are no longer visible.
But what incurs a destructive crop?? If cropping can be accomplished "destructively" and "non-destructively" I'd like to be clear about what causes the former. Anybody know. Anybody experienced this?
    -- Conclusion --
Seems like an interface flaw that iPhoto usually behaves "non-destructively", but some step  silently causes iPhoto to crop "destructively" and surreptitiously, and that iPhoto provides the user with no warning that it is about to be permanently alter the photo!
This is my first second serious attempt with iPhoto. The first time was years ago and I didn't like it then. I'm not a mac lightweight, or app lightweight. Actually I'm a app developer and designer. And I think something is wrong with the function or interface ... or the non-destructive marketing and documentation. I haven't been able to find any discussions that cites destructive cropping in iPhoto.

You have a great way of making normal things sound strange and suspicious
You can't search the Library package with Spotlight.
When you edit either with or via iPhoto a new file is created. This is a Preview and stored in the Previews folder. It's there so that apps that link to iPhoto via media browsers etc have something to get from the app. Aperture does the same, just you can choose to generate previews or not.
This has been the case since iPhoto 1. The names have changed (Originals to Masters, Modified to Previews) over the versions but iPhoto has always generated a version of the shot incorporating the edits. That’s just how it works.
Here's how the non-destrucive part works: If you edit a shot with iPhoto then choices you make are stored in the iPhoto database and the Preview is created.
If you subsequently edit with iPhoto, then the sum of the edits are re-applied to the Master file and the old preview is deleted and a new one created, reflecting the new changes.
If you export the shot (File -> Export) a new file is created incorporating the changes (unless you export the Original, of course).
It's still non-destructive because you can revert to the original.
However, the fact that you cannot revert to the original on some of your files suggests to me that the database in your Library is corrupted.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Retain custom order in albums when exporting to different iPhoto library?

    Hi all.
To ease resource consumption, I'm placing many of my 20,000 iPhoto9 items into a new iPhoto9 library.
I have many albums with pictures in custom order.
Any recommendations on how to retain that order when copying the photos/ albums to the new library?
If I copy the files to wherever, quit iPhoto and reopen in the new library for import, they files are imported to the new iPhoto library in whatever order they are listed in the finder, which is not the custom order I created in the album in the original album.
Don't want to waste all the time I spent putting them in certain order.
    Many thanks!

You can edit posts for up to 15 minutes after posting.
You're not actually moving albums from one Library to another. Your exporting groups of photos to the FInder. Then import them to iPhoto. There's no connection between the two libraries.
The problem with this wirkflow is that you lose more than your custom sort. At the very lest you lose the ability to revert to original for edited photos, and the non-destructive editing feature. Depending on how you're exporting you may also be losing a lot of metadata.
You could try use iPhoto Library Manager   which will move albums from one Library to another directly, with all the versions and metadata intact. I'm not sure that it will preserve a custom sort, but you could drop the makers a line and enquire from them.
    Other alternatives:
Duplicate your existing library, and then remove the pics you don't want from the new version.
Finally, you're using less than 10% of iPhoto's capacity and a 20k library is quite small these days. What is the problem you're trying to solve?
    Regards
    TD
If you want to keep using your custom workflow, create a sequential title for the pics in the Albums, export using the File -> Export command, choosing to use the Title as filename. Then import to the new Library and sort on Title.

  • IPhoto Version 8.1.2 Storage Capacity Limit

iPhoto on my MacBook gave message like almost at capacity do you still want to import? I need to know how to add more space for photos or move photo safely.

    Available:  4.56 GB
That is your problem  -  you need a minimum of 10 GB for the system to operate properly
You need to purchase an additional external drive (in addition to your normal backup drive) that is connected by a fast wired connection like USB of thunderbolt  and move your iPhoto drive to it - drag it to the EHD that is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and launch iPhoto while hiding the option key down and select the new location of the iPhoto library

    Used "Print" in "file".
Never had problem before but now list is unreadable and "crushed together".
I went to "Layout" to change Format, but it works in Formats.
How do I find the function I used before I upgraded?
When I print, I use paper size a4 210 x 297 which corresponds to the size of a CD sleeve?

    Essayez:
Mise en page de capture d'écran au format.
    Enregistrer sur le bureau.
    Imprimer l'image.
    ou,
Recréez manches CD à l'aide du programme Paint ou InDesign.
    Imprimer.
    Might work?
    Try:
    Screen Capture layout in Format.
    Save to Desktop.
    Print image.
    Or,
Recreate CD Sleeve using Paint Program or InDesign.
    Print out.

  • I have 15,686 photos on iPhoto 11 and am now, when uploading latest photos, getting a message saying that my startup disk is full.  Is there any way of increasing the capacity of the start up disk?

I have 15,686 photos on iPhoto 11.  As I've been uploading the latest photos in the last two days I've been getting a message stating that my start-up disk is nearly full.  I had no idea there was a limit.  Is there any way of increasing its capacity?  I have been shooting in Raw of late and I know it takes up a lot of space but I have heard of other people who have over 20,000 photos on their computers, so what is going on here??

    Two possibiilities here:
    1. Your start up disk is nearly full
    Or
    2. You have minor damage to the iPhoto Library and it's giving you a bogus message.
But here's the thing: A full start up disk is a very serious issue and needs to be dealt with fast.
So, how big is your Hard Disk? How much free space on it?

  • IPhoto '05's capacity

I just imported a ton of photos but somehow the most recent pix don't show up in the library. When I go to the iphoto library the images are there stored in dated order. When I try to reload the images that I'm "missing" the application says they are unrecognizable?!? What? I'm thinking that there must be a capacity limit that I've reached (my library currently states that there are 1341 images). Is that correct or did I miss the correct process to add to library?

    Hi Sherman,
Are you saying that you see the photos in the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder but not in the library window when iPhoto is open?
How did you import them. did you manually drag them into the folder in the Finder?
If you did, drag the folder to the desktop, then open iPhoto and drag the folder into an open iPhoto viewing window, or go to File>add to library and navigate to the folder on the desktop and choose it to import.

  • Capacity of iPhoto

    Hi all!
I imported around 3600 photos in iPhoto and i noticed that iPhoto is getting really slow. What are reasonable amounts of photos i can handle in iPhoto on a Dual Core Mini 512Mb?
    Thanks,
    Ton.

    Hi Ton,
If iPhoto is running a little sluggish, you can try a couple things I did to make my version run a bit smoother...
I use the 'Film Rolls' view, close whatever rolls I don't need immediately and keep open only the images I am working on. In iPhoto preferences, 'General', I have UNCHECKED all sources unless I am looking for something specific and also unchecked 'Look for Updates', in 'Appearance', I have UNCHECKED Borders: Outline and Drop Shadow, I use Black Background, and have UNCHECKED everything in 'Organize View'. This has seemingly helped smooth out some sluggishness I was experiencing...

  • How can I use one external hard drive for both Time Machine and iPhoto Library?

I have been using a 1 TG LaCie external hard drive for Time Machine backups.  My (older) Mac has 160 GB and is almost full.  I would like to move my iPhoto Library to the external hard drive, but I've heard Time Machine doesn't share one space well.  Should I
    1.  create another partition (but will this erase what I've already saved) with Disk Utility?  *I am running Snow Leopard*
    2.  create another volume to use for iPhoto, and if so, should the two volumes be of equal size?
    3.  leave it with one partition and move the iPhoto Library to the same partition with Time Machine back ups?
I know I don't need the entire 1 TG for back up of 160 GBs.  Please advise the best path to take.  Thank you!

You are getting incorrect information from your ASP. If you look at drive specifications the heat generated is no different for high vs low capacity drives.
I have upgraded the internal drive in my iMac 2007 with a 3TB Hitachi drive without any heat issues or other problems.
Larger hard drives have higher density platters so to access any given amount data the drives travel a shorter distance. Higher capacity drives should therefore run cooler than lower density drives because the drive spends less time spinning to access data.

  • Adobe bridge or iphoto with photoshop elements

Hi I am a new Mac user - have come from windows then linux and finally hoping to be less frustrated on a Mac!!
I am just learning about all of the features on iphoto, adobe bridge and elements (which i have used before). I need the editing capacity of elements but am unsure of which photo database / organisational system would be best for me to work with it.
I am not a photographer but have lots of photos and I do a lot of website editing.
Currently I have several versions of an original photo, eg cropped and rescaled to particular dimensions for a particular site and in other dimensions for another site - some sites have 100kb limits, some pictures need to be specific sizes - eg 555 x 135 pixels but don't have such specific size limitations. i currently organise these by putting crop or web or header file name extensions to the original file and save as.
I re-use the files a lot so need to keep the saved versions - otherwise I have to re-edit them each time.
In iphoto it seems that I need to make duplicates of the original to be able to have several versions all side by side to choose from but this will triple or quadruple the hard disk space when i just need to save the versions (much smaller in size) as different files.
Otherwise I think I need to save it to the desktop and then import it which is time consuming and messy.
In bridge it seems more flexible for this particular feature but it doesn't seem to have all the features that iphoto has for other projects like making books, calenders, the face recognition etc.
I know I need to choose between the two and stick with one, but am unsure which would be best.
Is there a way to save various versions of an original in iphoto easily after it is edited in photoshop and to have some system of naming the files so I can see which version it is as it not always easy to see quality differences in a thumbnail?
Thank you very much for your advice.

iPhoto is a Mom and Pop photo organiser and you’re usage is a bit beyond that.
In iphoto it seems that I need to make duplicates of the original to be able to have several versions all side by side to choose from but this will triple or quadruple the hard disk space when i just need to save the versions (much smaller in size) as different files.
Yes you will. Aperture has the ability to have different versions from one Master.
Otherwise I think I need to save it to the desktop and then import it which is time consuming and messy.
Hard to see what that would save really.
Is there a way to save various versions of an original in iphoto easily after it is edited in photoshop and to have some system of naming the files so I can see which version it is as it not always easy to see quality differences in a thumbnail?
No, you can’t have different versions from one Master (see above) but if you duplicate a file you can give the dupe a title.
