Iphoto 2 Lost Photo Library

Help Please,
The OS 10.3.9 has lost all of my Iphoto 2 library after the computer would not quit with Iphoto open. Instead a black window appeared stating that the computer should be restarted or the power button pressed. I pressed the power button and the computer closed down. Upon restarting the computer the Iphoto library had vanished.
What to do?

iPhoto: Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 8 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • Lost Photo Library - Apple TV

    Hi guys,
while resizing the partition of my external HD, I lost the photos that were stored in my iPhoto library. I've scanned the HD several times with various data recovery programs and was able to find some, yet not all of the lost photos. I had given up, but then I saw that my apple tv screen saver was displaying all of the lost photos!
Here's the deal: iTunes and iPhoto library were on the external HD. I resized the partition on the HD and thereby lost everything (I'm not very computer literate). I have the apple tv screen saver function set to the old and lost iPhoto library which can only be linked through the iTunes media library (which is also gone). Apple support says that apple tv is completely passive and therefore cannot store any data?
Does anyone have an idea how to help me find this file or at least solve this mystery?
I would really appreciate any help!
    Thanks

Screensaver is just using a cache. There's no way to get anything back from there.
File Salvage is an app that will scan the drive and tell you what files may be recoverable. Mind you, actual recovery will require a purchase.
Couple of notes: You will not recover the Library. Forget about that. The best you can hope for is to recover the individual photos and start over again. The scan may find many images with the same name. Ignore anything smaller than 500kb, that's likely to be only a thumbnail. Larger files are more likely to be the originals.

  • Help - Lost Photo Library

I amnew to tall this and on the advice of a friend, I have just downloaded OS X Mavericks and my photo library has disappeared due to a different version being installed!  I am hoping that I have it backed up on icloud but unsure how to recover. Please help as I am desperate to recover photos.  Nicola 162

    Hi Nicola
Firstly -Mavericks is very good and seems to work fine even on old Macs.
Also it is good practice to run 'time machine' or in some way back up all your files before doing anything major like change the operating system. I realise this may be annoying info if it's too late for that.
Is there an item in your pictures folder called iPhoto Library.photolibrary?
If so right click and 'show package contents' to see all the photos.
If this is not it - had you kept your library on a different drive or location to the default one?
If so you can just locate it in the finder and double click to open it in iPhoto
    Hope this helps

  • IPhoto 4: photo library incompatible

When I loaded iPhoto this morning, it told me I needed to update my photo library to be compatible with this version of iPhoto. I'm not sure why it did that, as my last update was last month to version 4.0.3. So I clicked on the button to proceed and fifteen minutes later, I tried to load iPhoto agin. Now I get the message "You can't open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto". Not good. I then tried to download the latest version of iPhoto, but it requires $$ and there WASN'T anything wrong with my previous version.
    Any guidance?
    Thanks.
    Ken
    PowerBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Hi, Ken. Have you recently received some photos on a CD that might have been burned in a more recent version of iPhoto than your own? Is that CD in the computer now? If so, eject it, then try opening iPhoto again.
Any CD that's burned from within iPhoto contains an iPhoto Library folder — i.e., a complete iPhoto database of those photos that were burned to the CD. That's considerably more data than just the photos themselves, and your older version of iPhoto isn't able to open the newer database format created by iPhoto 5.x or 6.x. But neither is it smart enough to stop trying and resort to opening your own iPhoto Library instead: it just knocks itself out trying to open the one on the CD, and finally gives up with the error message you saw.
Remove the newer database from its field of vision, and iPhoto should return to normal — but you won't be able to import the photos from the CD into your version of iPhoto.
As a practical matter, if you know you're going to get photos from someone who has a newer version of iPhoto than you do, ask them to export the pix from iPhoto to the desktop and burn a CD for you in the Finder rather than in iPhoto. Then you'll be able to view and import the photos from the CD without any problem.
If you often unexpectedly receive pictures from people who have newer iPhoto versions, and you can't alert them to your need beforehand, you should upgrade to the latest version if at all possible, to save yourself and the others a lot of extra hassle and annoyance.

  • Iphoto and photos library

I have updated to OS X 10.10.3 and moved onto photos from iPhotos....but in checking my hard disk, now I have iPhoto library and Photos library.
Should I keep both on my drive?
Why did Mac not automatically delete iPhotos library after successfully upgraded to Photos?
Is there any issue if I delete the iPhotos library?
    Thanks

Because that is not how it works - and although it looks like two libraries there is only one set of photos - with hard links so they both look like they are the same size
There is no issue if you delete the iPhoto library except you save very little space and make going back to iphoto impossible in case you would want to

  • Lost photo library after upgrade to Lion -- please help me find it?

I have just upgraded to Lion, and started setup for iCloud.
I can't find my photo library on my Mac.
I tried upgrading to iPhoto 9.2, but the install didn't work -- got stuck on "searching for photos"
The photos do appear in iPhoto, but not in the library?
My backups on a separate hard disk may be ok, but I thought the library used to have the list of photos.  All I can see is the icon.  I hesitate to open anything, as I don't want to lose all of my photos....
    Please advise.

The photos do appear in iPhoto, but not in the library?
Please explain.  iPhoto displays photos from the iPhoto library - if you have photos in iPhoto then you have an iPhoto library
Are you trying to access your photos? You do not do that directly into the iPhoto library - that has never been a support access method - you use the media browser
What exactly are you trying to do?

  • How to recover a lost photo library on iPhone after ios 5?

    Hi guys,
I know that there has been hundred of questions regarding lost photo's after installing ios 5 but I am struggling to find anything that relates to my situation.
I installed ios 5 onto my iPhone 4 on saturday afternoon, but before I did this I backed it up. Everything seemed to work ok, I backed up to my mac rather than iCloud as I hadnt yet installed Lion.
When I went to use my phone I noticed that everything was still there (apps, contacts, camera roll etc) except for another photo library that was in my photo app (the library was the photo's from my previous iPhone). I cant find these pics anywhere. I have tried using the back up twice but they still arent there!!
does anyone have any idea of where they might be or have they been lost forever?
any help would be greatly appreciated.
    many thanks

The photo sync is one way - computer to iphone.
You ould have to e-mail them to yourself.  When you sync photos to your iphone the current pics will be deleted.
The iphone is not a storage device, it simply mirrors the selected content of your computer.

  • After clean reinstall from Time Machine, iPhoto says: "photo library needs to be upgraded"

My iMac was reset to factory settings after the 1 TB HDD recall (replaced HDD).  I restored practically everything from Time Machine prior to the HDD replacement.  The only surprise so far is that when I start iPhoto for the first time, it says: "The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto.".  Of course I don't want it to corrupt all the photos and videos I have stored in there prior to the HDD replacement.  Should I click on "upgrade"?  Why is this showing up?  Nothing should have changed between before and after ...?

Well, that explains why it needs to upgrade the iPhoto Library, because your Mac now has version 9.2.3 whereas before it has 8.1.2.
I always like to understand what is going on before proceeding. I am guessing that Apple "restored" the 10.6.8 system but must have delivered it back to you with more recent versions of some apps like iPhoto (they probably don't keep all the old versions of those apps for these restores). I also believe that Time Machine usually does not replace a newer version of an Apple program (like iPhoto, Safari, Mail, etc.) when it is restoring like this. So I THINK this all makes sense.
So what I would do here is make a copy of your iPhoto Library (in case you don't like the results of what happens next), and then say "yes" when it asks to upgrade the iPhoto library to be used with the new version 9.2.3. The only reason this updating could go wrong is that there is some problem inside your database already, otherwise it should work fine. (I've upgraded through about ~ 4 versions of iPhoto over the past several years and have never had a problem with this step).
If you run into a problem after saying "yes," then you have your old Library still (the copy you'll have made) and can take steps to rebuid or repair it with a number of different tools before trying again.

  • Importing Photos From iPhone to iPhoto - Lost Photos

Just wanted to mention that I lost about 10 pictures during an import to iPhoto. When I plugged in the iPhone, iPhoto popped up, as normal. I chose "Select all" and when it was done, I chose "Delete files" from phone. Then the progress bar got stuck on "Finishing import". For several minutes I let it go.. nothing. I opened the Force Quit window and it showed iPhoto was unresponsive so I force quit.
None of the files ever made it onto my iPhoto. Half of those files are gone on my iPhone, half remained. I reset the iPhone and plugged it back in. iPhoto says there are 0 photos on the phone even though there are obviously some.

I had the same problem this morning. iPhoto hung up while "Finishing" an import of photos from the iPhone, and after force quitting iPhoto, more than half my photos failed to show up either on the iPhone or in iPhoto. After reading this topic, I figured the pictures had to be somewhere, so I opened a finder window, clicked "All Images" under "Search For" in the left-hand bar and there they were, apparently filed in "Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Data/2009/Oct 31, 2009". I copied the pictures I had "lost" to the desktop and re-imported them with no problems. There's probably an easier way to do it, but that's what worked for me, and I'm happy to have my photos back.

  • Iphoto lost photo's

I uploaded 4 new events to iphoto accidently using my time machine drive now i have no record of these events on the main drive and as time machine backs up every 2 hours i have lost my photo's. is it possible to find and restore from the time machine backup.

You need to explain exactly what you did
What do you mean by "accidently using my time machine drive"? iPhoto can not access the TM backup of the iPhoto library so this is confusing
I assume that when you say uploaded you are talking about importing??

  • Iphoto lost photos when it unexpectedly stopped??

    Hello,
I recently got a MacBook Pro and it was all going good, until now.  So I have a camera and whenever I import my photos, I import them into iphoto. Lately it has been quitting unexpectedly, but it never lost any of my images.  This time, I just imported about 400 photos and when it was done importing it asked if i wanted to delete them from my memory card and I said yes. After it deleted them from the memory card, it "quit unexpectedly" and when I re-opened iphoto there was just two folders in my events from what I just imported and nothing in them.
I've looked in last import, trash and folders from the iphoto library in finder.  This is really frustrating and I'm wondering if there's a way to save my photos! If anyone knows please help!
    Thanks,
    Lewx2

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto Lost Photos

This started out with this problem.
When I did a search in Spotlight or the Finder, the current iPhoto Library does not show up here. It finds a Library that is saved in 2010 in a different location not my current one in iPhoto. This last photo and album in that group was from 2005.
If I go directly to iPhoto and open it I can look through photos and find what however I cannot search and I cannot upload from someplace like Facebook or my own Web site or into an e-mail.
Similar to the problem I have with the Finder.
The Finder that comes up is not correctly identifying my computer either.
This has been happening since I got this new Mac Pro with Lion installed.
THEN, I got some help online and my computer showed I needed to upgrade my iPhoto to '11.
I did so and now all my photos since 2005 are GONE!
    Help!

Please reply to your original thread. There is NO reason to start a second thread on this problem.
    Thanks.

  • Lost photo library after syncing atv

i seem to have lost my iphoto library after syncing it to atv...after syncing, a "choose library" tab pops up with folders not related to my library...is this possible? or could i have deleted them accidentally?

sounds like your iphoto library is not in you pictures folder - spotlight iPhoto Library and see where it is
Once you find it quit iPhoto and restart with the option (alt) key depressed and use the select library option and point to its location
