IPhoto 4.0.3 and QT movies changed to low quality photos

Several months ago the hard drive failed in my iBook G4. I was able to recover most of my files and I backed up my iPhoto contents to my iPod.
I received my computer back from Apple and I put all my backed up photos and video back into iPhoto, but now my videos won't work. What used to be .avi files are showing up as 8KB 160x120 photos.
Are my videos lost forever? Does this have to do with iPod back up (I don't have a video ipod, but it should still be able to back-up files, right? It backs up word docs without messing them up.) Did Apple possibly load my computer with an older version of iPhoto than I had previously? (I didn't purchase iLife orginally, I just used what came with my system).
How can I turn these weird photo files back into the movies they're supposed to be? A newer version of iPhoto, maybe?
Also, as a side note, in case it's important, iPhoto will no longer allow me to import photos. I have to use image capture to get my my videos onto my computer.
thanks for any help you can offer,
Kari

What you are seeing is the original thumbnail iPhoto created for the movie which has now been imported as a photo. It is not your movie file.
it looks like you just saved the thumbs not the movie files. Which means if you don't have the movies backed up someplace else they are gone.
.avi is a format supported by QuickTime - which plays your movies selected in iPhoto.
You should not access files imported into iPhoto through the finder:
Don't tamper
iMac 700 Mac OS X (10.2.x) work with latest OS and Macs
Also check the iPhoto menu (About iPhoto) to see what version is now installed.

When I save a filtered photo from my iphone (filtered with "Tonal") onto my desktop into iPhoto, the filter dissappears and its saved as a standard color photo. Is there a reason why and way I can save it as is?

The reason is that Apple screwed up and despite threads for this issue dating back several months, there is no fix.  It's outrageous -- a dozen or so photos that I just took got completely screwed up because of this.  There isn't even a way to replicate the effects in iPhoto without major guesswork and tweaking.
I mean this isn't even something that should be an issue.  How Apple thought that a user would want his filters to disappear is beyond me.  I mean it's so absolutely counterintuitive that I'm baffled that such a destructive 'feature' could've made it through.
So much for Apple's quality control!  They'll forever say it's intentional and part of the 'lossless' design where the effects aren't permanently applied, but there should be an option.  Some users want their filters to stay when they take them.
In fact, ALL USERS WANT THE FILTERS TO STAY.

  • I used to drag and drop photos into pages. Recently updated to iPhoto 9.4.3 and now Pages doesn't recognize the photo?????

I use iWork Pages '09 to create my images. I normally drag and drop photos from iPhoto directly to Pages.
With iPhoto 9.4.3 I now get an error: " The media can't be used because you don't have access privileges or because it has no content or is corrupt". This doesn't happen with every photo from the same event and doesn't get corrected after running 'Repar Permissions'.  I can Export to desktop then drag to Pages but that is stupid. What's up???

With iPhoto 9.4.3 I now get an error: " The media can't be used because you don't have access privileges or because it has no content or is corrupt".
This looks like previews of some of your photos are missing or corrupted. Did you run a cleaning application, like "clean my mac" or move your iPhoto Library? Where do you store your iPhoto Library?
I'd try to repair the database or rebuild the iPhoto Library in addition to repairing permissions with the iPhoto Library First Aid Tools. Launch iPhoto with the command and options-key ⌥⌘ held down at the same time to get to the First Aid Tools.
Back up the iPhoto Library before you try rebuilding.

  • HSL Panel cannot control individual colors in the photos. Using the target tool and the colors change in the entire photo.?

HSL Panel.  When using the targeted tool I cannot control individual colors in the photo.  In Luminance the entire photo is changing not just one area?

Yes, that's the way it works. The target tool is simply a way to pick a colour to modify, but all colours like that one, no matter where they are in the image, will be modified.

  • Is there a low quality photo warning in books in iPhoto'11?

One of the pics in my book is filling a page, and looks pretty blurry and I'm almost positive that it is too low resolution for this size, but there is no warning icon telling me there is a problem.
It seemed like my warnings were not working, so I picked this photo to test. It is 250x200 pixels, and filling an 8.5x11 inch page.
Isn't there supposed to be a warning icon in the books? Am I missing something?

I have just tried it in iPhoto '11 and I don't see the warnings anymore.
It looks like it was removed in the latest version of the software.

  • AE CS 5.5 Mac OS 10.7, Imported screen captured .mov file is low quality

        Hello
I'm importing a few screen grabs that I made using Snapz Pro video. The quality of the original file is great. But when I import it into AE CS 5.5, and then zoom in and animate it, it looks really, really bad ONLY when I render at 1/2 resolution.
If I did the same thing to images, they would look fine. But this movie asset (h264) looks horrible unless it's rendered at exactly 100%.
To be clear, this only happens at render, and in the preview pane when the pane or render are set to less than 100%. If I view or render at 100%, it looks fine.

    Seriously?!?!
What version of After Effects? Include the minor version number (e.g., After Effects CS5.5 with the 10.5.1 update).
    10.5.1
Have you installed the recent updates? (If not, you should. They fix a lot of problems.)
    Yes
What operating system? This should include specific minor version numbers, like "Mac OSX v10.6.8"---not just "Mac".
    Os X 10.7.3
What kind(s) of source footage? When telling about your source footage, tell us about the codecs, not just the container types. For example, "H.264 in a .mov container", not just "QuickTime".
H264 .mov captured with Snapz Pro Video
If you are getting error message(s), what is the full text of the error message(s)?
    None
What were you doing when the problem occurred?
Rendering at half resolution, or previewing at half-resolution (also happens at other resolutiosn below 100%)
    Has this ever worked before?
    Huh?
What other software are you running?
    Chrome
Do you have any third-party effects or codecs installed?
    Surprisingly, no.
Tell us about your computer hardware. Include CPU type and number of processor cores, amount of RAM installed, GPU, number of disk drives, and how any external drives are connected.
Mac Pro 12-core 2.93, 24GB RAM, Radeon HD 5870, 4 internal drives (7TB total), about 10 external drives (RAID and separate other drives)
Do you have any third-party I/O hardware (e.g., AJA, Matrox, Blackmagic, MOTU)?
    No
Are you using OpenGL features in After Effects?
    Yes
Does the problem only happen with your final output, RAM preview, or both?
    Both
Are you using Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing?
    Yes

  • How can i change a low resolution photo into higher one without losing much quality.

I opened a photo and it has a poor quality, how can i fix it to a better one??

You really can't, but there are some tools out there that will do _some_ upsizing.
For example,  Genuine Fractals does a pretty good job.  You could increase size, then instead of printing at 72dpi (screen resoulion) you could print at 300dpi.  Then add things like gausian blurs, sharpening, demozaicing.. ect...
But as Dorin said, it will not be good becuase you can't create what isn't there.  But sometimes with a LOT of work, you can create the illusion that something might be better...
    Cheers!

  • I have Iphoto 09 8.2 and would like to add text over my photo, so when you bring the photo up the copy displays on the photo.  Could you please advise

I am using Iphoto 09 8.2 and need to overlay text on my photo.  Could you advise how to do this.  Can I do it in Iphoto?

You can't add text to a photo in iPhoto.

  • HT201210 Why are there constant updates installing Quicktime and making negligible changes to softwares?

    In title.

The files with arrows on the are alias files which are indictative of a "referenced" libraray.
Check the iPhoto Advnaced preference pane and see if the checkbox to copy photos into the library during import is checked or not.  If not you have a referenced library.
If that's the case I'd use  iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild you library which will convert the library to a managed one and include all available original/master photos in it along the keywords, titles, albums, etc.  Here's how:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
and select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • IMovie to iDVD: Error: Need to change to Best quality

I think this must be a bug in iLife 06, create a project in iMovie 6, it will be less then 2 hours long but longer then one hour. Share out to iDVD and you get an error that the files are too large and you should change to Best Quality. Change is made to Best quality but the error still returns, there is no way to get rid of this error with the current iDVD project. Solution: Export the iMovie project (I always use Full Quality) and then drag into the iDVD theme of your choice and it will burn. This happens on my Macs at home and all of the Macs I manage at the university with iLife 06. Has anyone else seen this problem?

But you didn't say you made the change in both places. This needed to be done by someone a couple of days ago.
You can also try this, but you'll have to reset Prefs:
This frequently helps solve some problems. Quit iDVD. Search for the file named com.apple.iDVD.plist and trash it. (A new one will be created next launch of iDVD.) Or look in: User/Library/Preferences. This may solve project loading errors too. Restart and use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions.

  • Transfer High Quality photos from iPhone to iPhoto

Is there a way to transfer the High Quality photos taken on my iPhone to iPhoto on my Mac? Currenlty it always transfers a Lower Quality photo.

I think you are asking, "How do I transfer Iphoto albums to my MacBook?"
If so it will cost you. Ive been told by Apple Support that your iphone photos albums are merely a mirror of the original photos. It is not an extra copy or a back up.
You can get a third party software from http://www.ecamm.com
Its called "PhoneView" There is a free version and one for 19.99.
I ended up getting both. It sure beats email all those cropped photos I put in albums to myself.
That would have taken forever so the 19.99 is worth it. Good Luck!

  • I try to open iphoto and it comes up with You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto. I have downloaded photo manager and it's telling me to update but it wont update...

I try to open iphoto and it comes up with You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto. I have downloaded photo manager and it's telling me to update but it wont update...

iPhoto is Apple's included program to manage your photo's and pictures.
It receives updates over time with Software updates and new machine or iLife purchases.
When iPhoto gets updated or a newer version is used, it may alter iPhoto support files, but newer iPhoto versions usually always compatible with older files which it then updates.
If you used a newer iPhoto on your iPhoto support files, then they got altered to the newer format, older iPhoto versions can't read the older format.
Somewhere along the line you somehow got a older version of iPhoto on your computer, you need to fine the newer version of iPhoto (not this photo manager, sounds like another program)
Or somewhere along the line you used a newer iPhoto version (like on another Mac) and it altered the iPhoto support files on your older version of iPhoto.
So the key here is to find the newest version of iPhoto and use that to access your iPhoto support files.
If you didn't access your iPhoto support files from another Mac, then you should have the newer iPhoto version on your computer.
Once you find it, and get it in the Dock, you should remove the older iPhoto version from your computer to prevent this from happening again.
Lastly, if the newer version of iPhoto is somehow gone off your computer, you should be able to get a copy off the latest OS X install disk or iLife using a free program called Pacifist.
    http://www.charlessoft.com/
Then you need to check for updates for iPhoto in the program itself, the current version is 9.1.2
