IPhoto 4.0.3 barbarian - recovering

I'm afraid I am one who "poked around inside the iPhoto Library folder", trying to clean up the mess, but made it worse. I can't even recount what I did.
Could someone help me from ground zero? I've read some of the other iPhoto threads, but am afraid, being a recovering iPhoto barbarian, to try any of the suggestion without assistance.
Where do I even start? How can I help you help me? From the time I messed things up, I have loaded new pictures into iPhoto, and of course don't want to loose them with any rebuild.
do i look for jpg files?
do i tell you what files I do have?
do i do any of the following?
+ spotlight
+ using the "com.apple.iPhoto.plist"
+ Quit iPhoto, then restart while holding the option+shift keys.
Will I need to or can I recover any originals from iDisk?
Sorry I can't give you much, but I'll follow your lead.
iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)
iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

No worries on the said delay. Time is of no concern.
Sorry, It's difficult for me to determine what exactly to tell you. It's confusing. It's difficult for me to determine what I "did", and asier to tell you what I currently "see". Can we start from there? Perhaps with the what jpg files I see using the finder search as you suggested.
Also, my subject line describes my iPhoto version, which is 4.0.3. I'm new to computers, but I'm guessing 4.0.3 comes "after" or "later" then specifically version "4", but I'm assuming this is still the correct forum. Let me know.
So:
Finder Search: finds 8,500+ jpg files of which i recognized some of the file names of my photos, both pre-barbarian and post-barbarian. Meaning I see the jpgs for photos from before I messed things up and I see the jpg files for photos after I added new ones.
Finder Search: also shows me that the Parent files are labled with numbers which I believe are the default folders set by iPhoto which you were talking about, the photos which "were in the nest of folders organized by date." I also see jpg files with Parent files labeld with my own album titles, which you describe as the alias photos/folders.
I also see jpg files with Parent files labled "orginal". I'm not sure what these are. I also see jpg files with Parent files labled "thumb". These photos seem to have the same naming configuration as the other ones i.e. "P1030678_1.jpg" or "657.jpg".
I will rebuild using CommandOptionShift IPHOTO 4, and get back to you with more information. As for the iDisk (if I need to use it), I have scheduled backups every week. So i'm good there I think.

  • Everytime I open iphoto, my computer tells me A photo has been found in the iPhoto Library that was not imported.  Would you like to import it.  no matter what I do, iphoto puts the pic in recovered files.  How do I fix this?

Everytime I open iphoto, my computer tells me,  A photo has been found in the iPhoto Library that was not imported.  Would you like to import it.  If I import it, a message comes up Unreadable file, the following file could not be imported. them it tells me where the file is and it cannot be opened.  If I do not import, then it says,The photo has been placed in the folder /Users/patrick*******/Pictures/iPhoto Library Recovered Photos_4.  It will just keep adding to recvovered photos.  This drives me crazy!!!!!!!  How do I fix this?

I had this problem some months ago and the following solution from Terrence Delvin put things right:
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a Folder called 'Import' or 'Importing'.
Drag it to the Desktop. *Make no other changes*.
    Start iPhoto. Does that help?
If it does then look inside that folder on your desktop. Does it contain anything you want? If not you can trash the folder.
However, since connecting a memory stick to my computer, I now have the same problem again.  This time there is no folder called 'Import' or 'Importing' so what should I do?

  • I deleted Iphoto? How do I recover it?

Alright, so Iphoto was already installed when I got this (used) Mac, so I don't have the "disks" for it and whatnot. When I upgraded to OS x Yosemite, Iphoto refused to work, saying I needed to update it, however when I tried to update it on the App store, it said I did not purchase Iphoto with my current Apple ID and refused to let me get it. I did not know it costed money and I deleted it from the launchpad, hoping to re-install the updated version, but I went to the App store and it costs money. Now all my photos are gone and I don't know how to recover Iphoto, no matter how much I try. What should I do?

You're using a Beta, you can not get assistance here.
Go to the Beta forum (you were given access when you signed up for the Beta)

  • I just lost all my albums in all my iphoto libraries.  Anyway to recover them?

I have a 27" imac.  This morning I turned on my computer and accessed iphoto....I have several libraries and in each one of them, all my albums are gone/missing.  Is there anyway to recover them.  It seems very weird that they just disappeared.  I have run utility disc a number of times.  thanks

First try Rebuilding the iPhoto library and see if that helps. You can also recover them from your backup.
Also PLEASE complete your profile. It's difficult for us to help you without at the very least knowing what iMac you have and what version of OS X is loaded on it. You can update your profile by clicking  Your Stuff in the upper right and then Profile and fill out the pertinent information.

  • How to stop iphoto from recovering photos that don't exist?

I just bought my iMac and transferred all my photos from my backup drive to the iphoto library. In organizing my photos I must have deleted photos or had some corrupted photos in the transfer. Now, every time I open iphoto is says it has recovered 75 or so photos, creates a folder for them, but it's empty. How do I stop it from trying to recovery photos that don't exist? I've searched and have found nothing. The folder generated by iphoto as a recovered folder is empty...

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Can you give me an idea of why this type of error occurred
Because of a minor glitch when iPhoto failed to clean up after an import.
why has this now corrected the error?
iPhoto should remove that Importing Folder at the end of the importing session. When you launched iPhoto again it saw the folder and (incorrectly) assumed there was an import in progress. Removing the folder means that iPhoto won't make that assumption.
There is no reason to assume that the problem wil recur.

  • Recovering missing iPhoto photos from iPhone 5

Hi, I reindexed my iPhoto library as I was missing photos. Now it seems I have lost more photos! I have my entire iPhoto library sync'ed with my iPhone 5. Is it possible to sync. from iPhone to iPhoto in an attempt to recover the photos? I am worried if I sync. my device with itunes as I normally would that the sync will go the other way and I will lose these photos forever. Can anyone help me? Adam

Try the following. It will create a library with all original files that are in your Originals folder. You can then see if there are photos in the Originals folder that your current library is unable to detect and dispay.
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
Also you can use Image Capture to manually upload all photos from your iPhone to a folder on the Desktop.
You should be able to import the folder into the library while excluding duplicates and get any photos that are currently missing.

  • IPhoto : how to recover imported photos that are now "*.ipmeta" files

Yesterday I imported photos from my Nikon camera in iPhoto. I imported them in an album. Then I deleted all photos from the camera and empty the trash (mac book).
Today I open iPhoto and I don't find the photos any more : neither in iPhoto nor in My Pictures.
Using the Finder (search on Yesterday), I found is a list of files such as "photo.002723.ipmeta". It looks like these files may correspond to the photos, but I cannot open them with iPhoto.
How can I recover my photos ?
I understand my mistake was to import the photos in iPhoto without first moving them to My Pictures.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
I understand my mistake was to import the photos in iPhoto without first moving them to My Pictures.
It wasn’t, unless you’re running a Referenced Library. Are you?
Then I deleted all photos from the camera
You can probably recover the photos from your camera card with an app like MediaRecover.
Today I open iPhoto and I don't find the photos any more : neither in iPhoto nor in My Pictures.
Are you sure you don’t have a damaged database file?
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    photo.002723.ipmeta
These are database files of about 4kb each. They are not your photos and your pics cannot be recovered from them.

  • I would like to move my photos in iPhoto to my NAS?

I would like to move my photos in iPhoto to my NAS.
Some state simply drag and drop it then point iPhoto to the new Location
quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive
    Some say it isn't possible.
Unless the NAS is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) you will not be able to run the iPhoto library on it
I am not particularly fussed about other users seeing it, I just want it off my iMac?  I am using iphoto 9.5.1.  its a synology DS213J NAS.
    thanks,
ooops think i am in the wrong section, if someone can move it then great. apologies.

for anyone else reading this, this is what I was told in the other forum.
iPhoto is problematic with referenced original files, because iphoto has no tools to recover from broken references, but Aperture has been designed to handle referenced images and libraries distributed across several drives well and has tools to fix broken references.
But both, iPhoto and Aperture, are not network databases.
Apple says:  Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library
Putting your originals on a network storage will make Aperture slower, and you are risking library corruption by transmission errors. The safest and option, and the solution with the quickest access to your original files will be a directly connected drive.

  • I HAD MY MACBOOK MEMORY CLEARED AND CANNOT UPLOAD MY IPHOTO ANYMORE

I recently had my macbook memory cleared and reset to all default settings. I was advised to back up all my personal documents and data as everything will be cleared. However, due to some technical issue (and one of the reason for memory wipe) i had to manually backup important documents, which were my itune, iphoto, and uni assignments.
After i my macbook had been wiped and returned to default settigns i began to reinstalled the documents i had backed up on my external hard drive. However, when i came to open iphoto it was saying i had to download it from the app store?? when i looked on the app store it was asking for me to buy iphotos for over £10 !! i was not aware i would have to buy this feature as i never originally bought the feature when i first got my macbook. without downloading iphoto i cannot access my photos which was the main thing i wanted to save as these are personal memories of me and my children.
Can anyone help me with this issue as i do not feel i should buy iphoto just so i can recover my own photographs, i have already paid for the memory wipe as it was strongly advised by the technician, who also helped me back up my documents in the store (which took 4 hours). I am correct in thinking that iphoto originally came as standard on my macbook when i bought it in 2009 or will i be required to purchase this and download it again??

Your post says you have a late 2009 MacBook with OS X 10.6.8. With the MacBook, you received 2 gray-faced OS X disks, one with the system programs and one with application programs. The application program disk will have iPhoto on it, so you would re-install it from there. See this Apple note on how to reinstall iPhoto.

  • How can i delete the masters of iPhoto without losing my photos

Mac Book Pro (Mid 2012) 13 inches
256 Solid State Start up Insert in DVD Drive
1T Hard Drive in reg slot
    16 GB Ram
    Mavericks 10.9.4
    iphoto 9.5.1
I am currently keeping my iPhoto library on my 256 SS Main Drive of my MacBook Pro.
How can I delete the masters of iPhoto without losing my photos in the main iPhoto display library and all their masters and edits.
I take loads of photos and import them and then will keep only 5% of the ones that I import.  As a result I have a masters folder of over 50GB and actual photos that take up less that 5GD.  Is it possible to delete the master folder without losing all the photos and without having to pain stakingly go through every folder and pick out from literally hundreds the ones that i kept and edited.  How do I reduce the size of the masters just down to the ones that I have kept and not every single photo and video that I imported in the history of my iPhoto experience.
If I delete the master folder will all the photos and their edits be deleted.
If so, is there a way to just delete the masters that are no longer in the iPhoto library, while keeping the masters and edits of the ones that I clearly want to keep because they are the ones that I did keep.
Why do they keep the masters of photos that I clearly deleted and emptied the trash on.
I like to maximize space and this would help a lot to clear up for me.  Thank you.

All the 5000 photos that reappeared after repair today were from my canada mega event, but for some reason it did not do it for all the other mega events.  It is a start but not complete.
Try the rebuild to recover more lost photos.
If "rebuild" with iPhoto does not recover more lost photos, rebuild with iPhoto Library Manager as described by Old Toad in this thread, but rebuilding with iPhoto Library manager will not recover your projects like cards, bilks, slideshows.
Re: iPhoto glitch with retained masters https://discussions.apple.com/message/26354337#26354337
Mostly the way I organize all my photos is that I make a folder for each country I visit.  i.e. New Zealand Folder, Canada Folder, India Folder; and at the same time, any photos that I import I delete directly from new imports and just keep the ones i want and then i go up to events and move the latest imported event into a mega event for that country and so they all get joined in a sense.
As a workaround, merge the events right after importing, before you start deleting photos.  And empty the trash always before merging projects.
You might consider to use albums instead of events for your country lists.   I simply use the events as basic containers. One event for each day of shooting photos. I found, that smart albums and searches are quicker in iPhoto and Aperture, if the events are smaller, also browsing is easier, if the events are not so large.
You can merge albums and remove photos from albums without the problems mentioned above.

  • Recovered files in trash after sleeping

Upgraded to Tiger 10.4.11 from Panther about 4 weeks ago using Erase & Install, then restoring apps, files, etc. with Migration Assistant from a clone. Flawless & painless--whew! However, I'm now having one minor but annoying issue--after playing Burning Monkey Solitaire, quitting, logging out & putting Mac to sleep, find recovered files in trash on next log in, specifically a couple of BMS text files. The Freeverse support folks are still working with me on this issue (suggesting doing a Secure Empty Trash, which didn't prevent the files from returning). I'm posting here, however, because today there was also an iPhoto folder (empty) in the Recovered files folder in the Trash. Any ideas on why this may be happening and how to stop it? I've used iPhoto since the OS upgrade without this occurring and, so far at least, no other apps (Word, Excel, other games, etc.) have been leaving orphan files on quit/sleep/logout that wind up recovered in the trash.
As I said, it's a minor annoyance, but hope it's not a symptom of something more serious. Thanks!

Thanks, but that's not quite what's happening here . . . first, neither Burning Monkey nor iPhoto unexpectedly quit--always were quit normally. Second, recovered files folder shows up after sleeping, not just after restarting.

  • Iphoto can´t find my photos, is creating a  new library the only solution?

    Ok, I am having a hard time understanding iPhoto and its libaries. There are two parts of my question;
    1.
I imported all my photos which I had on an external hard drive. I then changed my mind and copied them to the harddrive, and also kept thm on the external as a backup.
Now iPhoto cant find any of the photos. The thumbnails are there, but every time I doubleclick on an image, an error message appears The volume for “x.jpg” cannot be found.
I have about 14.000 pictures, so to sit and "find photo" one by one would take a very long time...
Is there another way to make iPhoto find all the images again?
    2.
I think I found one soulution to this, but Im not sure Im doing it right. What I did was that I downloaded "iPhoto library manager", created a new library, named it "No.2" and imported all the photos again into that library. This seems to be working fine. However, when I click the default library in Finder, it says that it takes up 9 GB of my harddrive. Can I delete this library? Or will it affect iPhoto since it is the default library?
I am completely new to Mac and still stuck in Windows-land. So if anyone can help me with this it is much appreciated!
    /E

    Hi,
    thank you foryou quick reply!
Ok, so nothing will happen to the images if i trash the original library?
Also, i have another question you might have an answer to. When I open the No.2 library (I have imported all the images to here) every time a message appears "6 photos have been found in the iPhoto Library that were not imported" I click "Yes" every time, but no images are imported and the message appears every time I open iPhoto. Aslo, every time I click Yes, iPhoto creates an album called "recovered Photos 1" "2", "3" etc. What photos does this regard? Can I get rid of this message somehow?
    /E

  • Recovered Photos album automatically created, but no error messages.

Previously when I opened iPhoto, I received a message (or rather 2 {I believe} duplicate messages) about importing recovered photos. I clicked OK and it created a Recovered Photos album, but its contents were empty. I deleted this album by putting it into iPhoto's Trash. When I reopened iPhoto, I received the message again, but this time it created a "Recovered Photos 2" album.
I quit iPhoto and deleted the Import folder from my iPhoto Library. Now I don't get any messages, but the Recovered Photos (not Recovered Photos 2) album is still there. If I trash it and restart iPhoto, the it is automatically created again.
How can I stop iPhoto from automatically creating the Recovered Photos album? I'm not receiving any error messages or messages whatsoever.

Addendum to all about this question - I am trying to import my original CDs - hangs and does nothing at first track. Trashed the .plist, no help. Reinstalled fresh copy of iTunes - helped - FOR ONE DISK. After that, same problem.

  • IPhoto library corruption after 9.6.1 upgrade

I´ve been working with iPhoto for years, and I had a library with 60gb of photos, but after the last update (that I did some minutes ago), the program restarted and asked me to choose a library or to create a new one. I choose the old one, but it appears to have nothing on it! So i went to finder, just to check the size of the file, and it´s only 7,5 mb, so I think something went wrong. What can I do to restore the library?
I also had a time machine backup done, but wen I go to the old files, they are the shame size (7,5mb), so whats wrong with iPhoto? how can I recover my old pictures?
Some time ago, I was an aperture user, so I have another elder copy of the library (but it´s for aperture), and this one has the 60 gb size, so I think that it is something wrong with the update.
Does anyone know how to deal with this?
    Thanks!

I just noticed that I was using an aperture library with iPhoto instead of an iPhoto one, wich is located (as I can see in Time Machine) inside the program folder, not in the images folder (where it is the new iphoto library), so I think that with the update, something deleted it. I will try to restore that old one from Time Machine, but I think that I will happen again if I update iPhoto. Can I convert an aperture library into an iPhoto one?
    Thanks

  • Rebuilt IPhoto Library does not display.

Recently my iPhoto has been crashing, probably because I unknowingly moved a file or files in the iPhoto Library with the Finder.
Heeding the advice posted throughout this forum I trashed the existing iPhoto Preferences file, the three thumb files, and rebuilt my iPhoto Library. (I don't recall in what order.)
I renamed my two respective iPhoto Libraries so now iPhoto automatically finds the new one.
In the Finder, the new iPhoto Library is nearly identical to the old one; it contains over 21 GB of photos, all arranged in their respective folders organized by year, month, and day created.
When I open iPhoto, however, neither the thumbnails nor the file names of the photos display.
In the "Source" pane, icons for "Early Photos," "2003," "2004," "2005," and "2006" appear under "Photo Library" but selecting them does nothing.
Nothing ever appears in the main "Organize" pane at all--it is completely blank. Below it "No photos" appears.
iPhoto will still display the pictures in the old Library, but it crashes almost immediately after I do anything.
Obviously there is some disconnect between iPhoto and the Rebuilt Library. Can anyone offer some insight?
    Thanks.
    Mike
    Imac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

After considerable culling of unnecessary and redundant files I was finally able to free up enough disk space to conduct a second iPhoto library rebuild without having to delete the first rebuilt library.
Unfortunately I've run into problems once again.
Since the rebuild took 2 1/2 hours I wasn't watching the computer the whole time; when I returned iPhoto had crashed but the second rebuilt library seemed complete. My original library is 21.9 GB; my first rebuilt library is 21.28 GB and contains most of the photos of the original--my second rebuilt library is also 21.28 GB.
After the second rebuild I now have 3.98 GB free space on my hard drive (and 2GB RAM).
iPhoto will open the first rebuilt library, although as I described previously, it won't actually display any photos, rolls, or albums. In contrast, iPhoto will not open with the second rebuilt library at all.
When I attempt to open iPhoto and select the second rebuilt library the file selection window opens and all my iPhoto libraries appear in it. None of them are grayed out (as are non-selectable files) but nevertheless I cannot select the second iPhoto library or even highlight it. It does not provide any message--it simply does not respond.
Unlike the first rebuilt library, the second rebuilt library never contained a Dir.data file, an iPhoto.db file, a Library.iPhoto file, or an AlbumData.xml file. It did contain the three thumb data files, but after opening it failed initially I tried deleting these files thinking they might be problematic. That apparently had no effect. Right now the second rebuilt library only contains my photos organized in year, month, and day folders.
Previously Brie Fly stated that iPhoto automatically opens the newly rebuilt iPhoto library after a rebuild, however, the first time I opened iPhoto after the second rebuild attempt and subsequent crash it automatically opened the original iPhoto library.
I copied the error report from the iPhoto crash that occurred after my second library rebuild attempt. Please see below. Does it shed any light on the situation?
Also, to answer your question Brie Fly, I am able to close all the open rolls in my original library before iPhoto crashes. I did that and after a short while it crashed anyway without any other action on my part. I also tried quitting iPhoto after closing the rolls, but every time I do, regardless of whether there are open rolls or not, it does not quit but crashes. It seems impossible to quit iPhoto while using the original library without crashing. Furthermore, every time I open iPhoto after a crash the rolls I previously closed are once again open, and iPhoto informs me it has recovered 17 photos and put them in a folder named "recovered photos." Since this occurs every time I try to quit while using the original library I now have 88 identical folders of 17 recovered photos. I deleted many of these before but iPhoto just keeps making new ones.
Here is the report I received after iPhoto had crashed during/after the second library rebuild attempt:
