Iphoto 4.0.3 data storage subdirectories seem random

I have iphoto 4.0.3 neatly organized into smart albums and some regular albums. I am trying to back up all my data onto an external harddrive, therefore I am telling the harddrive to move over everything in photolibrary. When I look on the harddrive, all the data is there, but my smart albums don't even show up and my regular albums are there, but empty. All of the pictures seem to be saved in some kind of arbitrary, long list of subdirectories that iphoto creates. For example, when I open iphoto and look in the album 'Family' all family photos are there. When I look for the same photos externally to iphoto, they would appear in a tree of files like:
2005->02->04->10 and they are saved as their original titles like DSC_0023.jpg, not the title of 'Family' that I assigned them in iphoto. The other issue is that I think the harddrive is not saving all the photos because the filenames are too long when they include all the subfolders that iphoto is assigning them. Basically, when I look in my external harddrive, all I want to see is all my iphoto albums in different files with all the photos assigned to that file, all saved as JPEGS. Anyone know how to resolve this issue? Also, I was wondering if this is still an issue in 6.0.2 and if its better to just buy the upgrade? Thanks.

Hi Marlene,
iPhoto 6 organized your files in the finder a little differently. It still does not show your albums, slideshows, books, etc. as the info for these are in data files.
Here is a screenshot of the iPhoto 5 and iPhoto 6 library folders in the Finder and an explanation of each.
This is a view of how the iPhoto 5 Library looks in the Finder.
It is organized by Year folders. Inside the Year folders are Month folders. Inside the Month folders are the days of the Month. Inside the day folders are the photos you took on that day. If you imported video clips and RAW files on that day they will be in an Originals folder. If you have edited any photo imported on that day, the original will be in that folder also.
iPhoto 6 Library folder in the Finder
As you can see the structure is now related to rolls. Rolls are created for each folder you import and each import session from a camera.
It is very easy to change the names of film rolls within iPhoto to make them easier to find images within. Open the info panel in iPhoto by clicking on the "i" icon. Once it is opened, click on the roll title in the viewing window.
Click on the word "title" in the info pane and type in your new title. I like to use a date and text format such as 12/25/05 Christmas at Mom's, 1/05/06 my birthday, etc. Once the roll names are changed within iPhoto, they are also changed within the Finder, making it easy to locate an image.
When importing from a camera, make sure you name the roll with a date and text before the import.

  • How to alternate data storage into 2 arrays with an analog square wave input? (seems that the retriggerable function is not supported by my PXI card)

    Hi!
I'm trying to have an analog square wave input determine where data gathered from a second analog input channel is stored.  I want data to be stored to one array during the high signal period of the square wave and data to be store to another array during the low signal period of the square wave.  The square wave I'm using is of constant frequency (8.3 Hz).  I believe I need to use an analog input wave as opposed to a onboard clock or other timing mechanism because my square wave is also being used to modify the input going into my experimental setup.  Thus the data storage needs to be correlated to the timing of the data modification in the experiment.  I tried to use the retriggerable property node function, but receive error 200452, which I think means that my PXI card (6115) can't support this retriggerable function.  So I'm looking for other ways to accomplish alternating data storage in response to an incoming analog square wave.  Any help would be GREATLY appreciated... Thanks!  (I'm also quite new with LabView so toddler-type explanations would probably be most useful  )

    Hello Shari,
I am looking at your situation and it seems very intriguing.  after downloading your file I have a couple questions to ask if you don't mind answering.
Currently in your program you are only taking one sample of data at a time,  this could lead to uneven sampling.  Would you like to sample at a consistent rate  (say 10 Kilosamples of data a second?)  if so what type of card are you using?
Also,  Do you want your data to be in a 2-D array of data?
    Best Wishes,

  • I need a memory management/ data storage recomendation for my IMac 2 GH Intel Core 2 Duo

Since giving my mid 2007 IMac a 2GB memory boost to accommodate Lion all has been well however my memory is full. I have a sizable ITunes library and 6000 photos in IPhoto, Me thinks I should store this all more effectively for the safety of the music and photos and for the well-being of the computer....but there seems to be choices. Is this where ICloud comes into play or time capsule or should I just get an external mini hard drive. Can anyone help me with some pearls of wisdom with data storage.

    Greetings John,
There are two types of memory which you mention here.
The 2 GB memory you refer to is RAM.  It is not used for storing information.  Rather for giving the computer a place to do much of its work.
File storage is handled by the hard drive of the computer.
If your available hard drive space is getting low you can move larger files to a Mac Formatted external drive:
    Faster connection (FW 800) drives:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/H2068VC/A
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/TW315VC/A
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/H0815VC/A
    Normal speed (USB) drives:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/H6581ZM/A
Larger files can include entire databases like iTunes, iMovie, or iPhoto.
Keep in mind that if you move these items to an external drive you will have to have the drive plugged in and powered on to access the data on them.  In addition, if you move important information off your internal drive to an external, you should be sure that your backup solution is backing up that external drive to keep your information safe.
iCloud is not a file storage solution and TimeCapsule is not suited for storing databases like those mentioned above (its meant primarily as a backup solution).  I would stick with an external drive (1 to hold your big files and another one big enough to backup both your computer and the first drive).
Here are some other general computer clean up suggestions: http://thexlab.com/faqs/freeingspace.html.
    Hope that helps.

  • Uploading to online data storage: Now cannot download songs into iTunes

    Hello all.
I am not seeing this one on any FAQs, knowledge bases, or discussion boards yet:
I am doing my initial upload of files to SugarSync, a highly-recommended online data storage service. Since I started, I cannot download songs into iTunes, even from the iTunes Store.
On any new downloads from the iTunes Store, the song DOES appear in the Music library view but immediately after completing the download it shows the exclamation point warning that the file is not in its location. The new folders get created properly within the iTunes Music folder but the subfolder where the song should be is empty. Each time I had to write iTunes Support to get them to make the files available.
I can still add files manually, no problem. E.g., I can add *.mp3 or *.wav files or folders, I can convert them to AAC, etc. The glitch seems to occur only when automated loads into iTunes are operating.
As a test, I downloaded a song from Amazon. Here the problem was different but I could work around it manually. Normally the Amazon process loads songs automatically into iTunes, too. Here again, the download did create the proper folder in the iTunes Music folder, as it should, but this time the symptoms were reversed:
    (a) the mp3 file WAS in its folder as it should be (w/the iTunes DL, the file was NOT there)
    (b) the song did NOT appear in the iTunes Music view (w/the iTunes DL, the song DID appear)
    (c) I was able to browse to the file and tell it manually to load into iTunes (w/iTunes I had to write Support and wait a day).
(I wonder what's the cause of the differences between the two cases.)
Strictly speaking, I can't PROVE the problem has anything to do with SugarSync (which otherwise seems good so far), but the DL problem started as soon as I started using it. Something in the SugarSync upload or file-monitoring process, or an odd thin gin iTunes, seems to be preventing automated, direct loads into iTunes. And since the data service runs in background, so it can monitor file changes, that might mean I can't buy music anymore! Obviously that would be a dealbreaker with SS. (I have contacted SS on this but they've not had fair chance to reply yet.)
    1) Anyone else have this problem?
    2) Is this permanent or just temporary while I am doing the initial upload?
    3) Anyone know a solution?
(FYI, I am a highly-experienced user and otherwise quite handy with iTunes files, library moves, and backups. My library is entirely consolidated and all AAC.)
    Thanks.
(Oh, and this occurred in both iTunes 8 and the new iTunes 9, so it seems unrelated to the upgrade this week.)

UPDATE 1. CHANGING BROWSER HELPED -- OR DID IT?
I called Apple iTunes Support, who said the problem is new to them. The technician's hypothesis was that something, perhaps browser-related, was interfering with the initial creation of a temporary file (which should go to the Recycle Bin) that instead causes the completed file to go to there.
He noted that iTunes, though not going through one's browser onscreen, does use settings within one's default browser. I use Mozilla Firefox, so we switched to IE as the default browser, restarted iTunes, and the song downloaded with no problem! Then I switched back to Mozilla, restarted iTunes, and it worked AGAIN with no problem!
(Dutifully I advised SugarSync, which is still investigating.)
    UPDATE 2: ARTIST NAME CHANGE - SOME FILES GOT MIS-MOVED / MIS-CHANGED
Definitely something still wrong. This time some pre-existing song entries (not new downloads) lost their connection to their source file.
In iTunes, which manages folder names for artists and albums automatically, I corrected the spelling for an Artist, so immediately iTunes renamed the folder, and automatically SugarSync noted the change to be uploaded. While the changed folder name and all the songs within were still uploading to SS, in iTunes I saw exclamation points come up -- but only for some of them. Most files got moved or changed correctly, but several lost connection to their file (i.e., the file was removed for the original misnamed folder but never moved into the correctly-named folder). Weird.
Worse, in only some of those cases did I find the missing *.m4a file in the Recycle bin. (I had to retrieve old, original *.mp3 versions from another folder and re-import each into iTunes manually.) I've never seen iTunes have a problem managing an Artist rename until I started using the live SS process.
(I've reported this to SS and asked if there is a way to disable temporarily SS to see if that's the problem.)
[Note: I am willing to try downloads again but I am wary of trying to rename entire Artists (Folder) again. That was a lot of work.]

UPDATE 3: SERIES OF TESTS - 1 FAILURE USING iTUNES
Still problem occurs, but not always. Today, I rebooted PC. I tried CD, iTunes, & Amazon. I varied having the browser open when using iTunes.
Here are the results of a series of attempts to download songs. "FAIL" means the file did not load properly into iTunes or loaded but lost its connection (exclamation point warning).
    # Source Mozilla #Songs Result
    1 CD Closed 1 OK
    2 iTunes Closed 1 OK
    3 Amazon Open 2 OK
    4 iTunes Open 1 FAIL
    5 Amazon Open 1 OK
    6 iTunes Closed 1 OK
    7 Amazon Open 2 OK
    8 iTunes Open 2 OK
(I reported this to SS. Hoping they'll test and find the problem.)

  • Windows 7 64bit Raid 1 Data Storage setup with UEFI and 6TB drives

i just bought a GigaByte MB with UEFI bios, 1 SSD 128GB drive for the OS (boot up), and 2 6TB drives for use in a raid 1 setup for the data storage.
I have been able to install win 7 64bit using the UEFI dvd drive.  I have been able to define the 6TB mirror via the bios (under the Intel Rapid Storage Technology option) .  But when ever i go into windows, and check under Disk Management, i don't
see the raid 1, i see two drives listed for the data, each at 1492 GB.   I should be seeing 1 drive at 5.4TB.
note: I have tried re-installing win7 64bit many times to see if i have missed something.   When i run setup off uefi dvd drive, i see that drive 1 (of what should be part of the mirror) and drive 2 are listed there at the reported 1492 GB size each.
So it seems that win7 doesn't see that mirror that i created via the bios. So is this a bios setting problem somewhere?   i presume on this screen i should see the correct mirror size already.
Also, do i need to install win7 via the uefi dvd if  i don't want to boot off those large drives (i just want to boot off the ssd. But when i did try that using a legacy mode, i couldn't later try to create a single large drive for the mirror using
GPT formatting.  it just wasn't an option.  although the mirror was recognized as 1 drive, but broken into 2TB and 3TB.)
what could i possibly be doing wrong??
    Thanks for any help

Thank You Roger.   I did call Gigabyte.   This is how i solved it with the gigabyte support team.
    1.   Don't try installing Win7 64bit sp1 and setup RAID at the same time.  (even go ahead and unplug those raid drives if you have it plugged in).   The OS should be installed first on the boot drive, but make sure the BIOS is already set
to RAID (not AHCI.  If you already installed OS under AHCI, you need to reinstall OS.  i find this crazy because what if you decide to install raid down the road.. to an existing machine.. you can't do that because of this).     Make sure
to install OS with the UEFI dvd drive option (i had done this).
    2. Once the OS is installed, install all drivers that come for the Motherboard... That should include intel Raid drivers. (note gigabyte support didn't tell me to do this, but i didn't want to take a chance to have to reinstall OS again or have more problems,
    but it makes sense.)
    3. Now i have the GA-H97-Gaming 3 mother board, it had Bios F3.  I upgraded it to F5 as per support tech.
    4. turn off machine, and replug in the two 6TB drives.
    5. after reboot, i find out that i no longer see Intel RAPID Storage Technology. (this should have displayed when i set the SATA Mode Selection to RAID before i started all this business... it did under bios F3, but not under F5.. bug??  i think so,
so i plan on letting gigabyte know about this).  This is a problem.  In Intel RAPID Storage Technology is where you define the RAID in the first place.    OK, well after several reboots.. i tried to use CTRL-I to get to intel's interface
rather than that of the gigabyte bios.   Voila... i define the Mirror...
    6. I am able to boot into OS.   I got to Drive Management.  I now see 1 6TB drive.  I initialize it of course using GPT.  Format it.  All all looks good now.
Hope this helps someone.. took me enough tries to get it right.   I really am bothered about requiring the OS installed in the correct SATA mode just to get RAID working.  As i mentioned, you can't change your mind afterwards without reinstalling
OS.   Also i couldn't even get the OS setup to start when i had those raid drives plugged in.. so make sure to unplug them.
    Best Regards.

  • Local data storage with XML vs SQLLite

    Short version:
I have a mobile app that gathers and stores a large amount of data. The current XML solution (all in one file) is having performance issues as the volume of data increases beyond a certain point.
Can I be confident that using SQLLite and a local database will be a better option and improve performance?
    Long version:
I have built a mobile app that is used by my client to collect data.
When we started the project the amount of data was relatively small. Given that, and given the past experiences of my team, we chose to use an XML file to store the collected data. When the app starts it loads the whole xml file into a set of data objects in memory for use by the app. The data is not loaded again for as long as the app stays running. We then run a routine whenever the app wants to save to the HD that converts all of the data back into XML.
The data is split into 'projects' and each project naturally has its own xml node. To improve performance when saving, each instance of the Project class stores its loaded node string. Then, when the save routine is called, if the classes data has not been changed it simply returns the original string instead of going through the whole process of re-compiling it.
Of course this does not change the fact that whenever a save is performed, the whole xml structure must be saved back to the file on the HD.
The app has now been used in anger for quite some time and we are starting to get reports of performance issues. The main culprit is during loading which only happens once but can apparently now take an exeptionally long time and causes problems during startup to the point where users think it has crashed.
I am now tasked with trying to improve the data storage for the app. My original reaction was to try breaking down the xml into multiple files which can then we loaded and saved when needed instead of handling everything all at once. I am worried though about the implications of the app trying to handle in excess of 2000 xml files in some cases. It may not be an issue at all but it just stands out to me as something to be concerned about.
So the best other option that I am aware of is to use SQLLite to save all the data into a local database. I have very little personal experience with sql and databases though so while a lot of the documentation and blog posts I see seem to suggest that this is the way to go for mobile apps with a large amount of data, I cannot be quite certain. The big issue is that I cannot afford to sell the idea of such a radical change (and more importantly the time it would take to implement it) to my client without being quite sure that this will be a valid solution to the problem.
So my question to you, Flex community, is would you continue to use XML or is SQLLite the better way to go for large amounts of data? Do you think that I would see an improvement by using SQLLite? Additionally, do you have any tips or experience with a similar situation that might be helpful to me?
    Thank you
    Jamie

I've been very happy using the internal SQLite database with Flex.  You should definitely get much better performance from it.  Just being able to load your data asynchronously if nothing else you should get a great benefit.  The sheer amount of data in your XML file that is being passed around is probably quite a hit (especially on mobile).  Breaking up the XML shouldn't be too crazy to do (as you're already doing it somewhat, I'd imagine, when you're accessing the information from within your app).  Give switching to SQLite a try, but I'd say that's a great place to start.

  • Using TC for back up and data storage...partition?

I'm not sure I know enough to word this question properly so my apologies in advance.
I picked up a time capsule today and I want to make sure I set it up the right way. Besides using it for back-ups, I'd like to use it for data storage of things that no longer fit on my laptop. (Now a MacBook Air with a smaller drive than I'm used to.)
I'd like to put my iPhoto library, iTunes and various other things that I don't have to have with me all the time on it.
Should I partition the drive? Can I partition the drive? For data and backup sections?
I also have a question re: two people backing up to one TC. If one is backing up all the time and one is in town only occasionally, how is space distributed if partitioning isn't possible? If the TC capsule backes up till it's full and then drops off the oldest backup, what does it do when it;s full and the occasionally backed up machine is put into the network?
Many thanks for any help. I'm looking forward to setting this up and would like to avoid doing it wrong!

The drive cannot be partitioned. You can create folders as you wish to suit your need for things other than backups.
As noted earlier, when the occasionally connected machine is connected for backup, it will delete the oldest backup for that machine to make room when needed.

  • Bulk Data Storage for Travelling & Charging

    Good day readers
I shall be travelling later this year and don't want to take lots of SDHC cards. Does anyone have any advice on what to take that stores lotss of Video files and Stills please. I want to keep bulk and weight down.
I have looked at the Vosonic range but these seem expensive
I have considered a small Netbook - a lot less than a Vosonic unit - 160gig to 250gig will be sufficient
I want to be able to view the video files and stills
I also want to be able to charge the units, there will be no mains electricicity where I am going, so solar charging ideas needed to the Camcorder batteries and the data storage device
All Ideas welcome, what solutions have people used
    Thanks....

John, many netbooks have a slot for installing your SDHC card and can read it. Then use Harm's suggested USB port hard drive to off load the data.  Possibly even better use an external SSD drive as they take appreciably less power than a hard drive.

  • OS X Server 10.9 Blade server (data storage)

    Guys,
anyone who knows about a blade data storage that can be used in a Mac mini server? this is to store all the home folder users/Software update/NetInstallBootImage ect...
Do you know any brand and what kind of setup to use (XSAN)?

What you appear to be referring to is the storage equivalent of 'blade servers'. In fact often such products mix both servers and storage.
    See http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/equallogic-ps-m4110/pd?~ck=anav
The above product claims to be OS X compatible. It also appears to be from the fact that is refers to using iSCSI to be an Ethernet based solution. Therefore it would be connected to an Ethernet switch - possibly at 10Gbps, and so would your Mac(s). The Mac would however it would seem need to install some iSCSI software in order to link to it.
There are two main iSCSI Initiator packages for the Mac, the AttoTech Xtend SAN iSCSI Initiator, see - https://www.attotech.com/products/product.php?sku=INIT-MAC0-001
and the StudioNetworkSolutions Xtarget iSCSI software, see http://www.studionetworksolutions.com/globalsan-xtarget/
The later used to be better known as http://www.studionetworksolutions.com/globalsan-iscsi-initiator/
However XTarget uniquely incorporates Xsan compatibility with its iSCSI client. This means you can connect to the storage via iSCSI and ensure multiple Macs can connect and share the same iSCSI target. With the standard GlobalSAN client or it appears the Xtend SAN they are not Xsan compatible.

  • What data storage method should I use?

I am currently writing a program and among other things need to store data.
The program listens to two computers talking to each other in a known protocol (the program know what protocol it is,the user give the program the protocol structure ), if the packet that arrived to the program has unseen value in one or more of the fields
it add it to the database.
I am not sure what data storage method(such as sql server, xml etc.) to choose since I don't know whether the data stored in the database would be large or not, it depends on the computer's conversation
Also I will need to be able to get all the data from the database with no trouble and might need to extract some data and not the other (for example all the packets with the value 24 in field x)
By protocol I can't just give you one because the user of the program defines which protocol the conversation is in.
By conversation I mean that two computers talk to each other it doesn't matter if a user operate the computers or not.
The maximum number of entries in the database would be the number of variations that the packet in the certain protocol can be. I mean if the protocol is 8 bytes long the maximum number of entries would be 2^64 but if the header is longer the number goes up,
but the number of entries could be less depending on the conversation and it is out of my control.
The program will only store unique headers, I mean that the same combinations of values in the header won't be in the DB twice, the program store the header if it is unique and it isn't stored in the DB
I thought of using a sql server such as mysql but I am not sure what data storage method would suit this situation the most?

Since access to the data storage will not be concurrent and given only the "monitoring" program will write to it (according to your answers to some comments), my recommendation is:
The safe way to go now seems to be a database, but you shouldn't be concerned right now with the administration of one
    Use SQLite locally
in the machine the monitor runs in, and steer your effort towards improving and/or completing the protocol part
If SQLlite database grows to large, rename it, archive it and create it again empty
Later you can move to another database engine with no change of code ( if you do things the standard way ).

My iphone 4 has no data storage. I have deleted all apps, music and texts and it still says I only have 1.9 GB available. There is nothing in my storage.

The problem could be that you don't have enough storage on the device itself, not on iCloud.  Go to Settings>General>Usage to see how much "Storage" you have available on the device.  Farther down the list is the available storage on iCloud.
    Also check:
Go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backups>Manage Storage; there, tap the device you need info on and the resulting screen lists Backup Options with which apps store data on iCloud as well.  Tap Show All Apps to get the complete list of apps and MB used for backup storage.
A device needs many MB of storage in order to perform a backup to iCloud.

You cannot delete the account from the server (partly to prevent the username from becoming available again and some-one else using it to pretend to be you).. Having disengaged your devices from it, go to http://icloud.com and delete any data in there such as contacts and calendars. Then just ignore it.

  • In IPhoto I changed movie dates after thumb nails were created in IMovie but the new dates are not showing up in IMovie.  Is there someway to refresh the IPhoto event in IMovie?

Background:  I'm transferring file folders from a Visa laptop via an external hard drive to my IMac.  In the folders are photos and videos from different cameras.  SO I first tried to import to IMovie but it would not recognize any of the files.  So then I imported into IPhoto and both photos and videos were imported and I created events for each folder.  When I first opened IMovie I had to wait for it to create "thumb nails".  Then I could view the events in IMovie BUT the video clips are not together because they have vastly different dates and are mixed with videos from other events.  I looked at the dates and said I can fix that in IPhoto which i did but those new dates are not showing up in IMovie.    I think I need to somehow refresh the event data that Imovie is using but have not found how to do that in either IPhoto or IMovie.
I'm doing this on three events with about 100 photos and videos.  But I have many 1000s more to do so need to know how to either fix this or delete these events, reimport, change the dates, then open again in IMovie.   I'm sure that would work but I can't understand why changing the dates in IPhoto is not being reflected in IMovie.
    Appreciate any tips or pointers.
OBTW this is my first question as a first time Apple owner.

It was suggested I move this question to IPhoto or IMovie which I did.
Well moving to a different discussion group did not provide an answer to this question either. But what I finally did was import one batch of photos and videos into IPhoto for a given day at a time. Working with these I could change the date and times in order to get them in the original sequench taken. Then I would create an album with that batch. These would all be on the same day (IMove was closed for this phase). Then I would open IMovie, generate the thumbnails for that album, and select the album I had created. This was necessary because the importing process in IPhoto was using incorrect dates for my video so it was a real struggle finding them in IMove until I developed this approach.
I believe that this whole process was so screwy because I was importing from an external hard drive not a camera. I had these photos on a PC and did not have the original cameras to use to import directly which I am fairly sure would have made this easier!
