Iphoto 4.0.3 SOS

I accidentally trashed my library, thinking it was an old library. I quickly realised this was not the case and recovered it from the trash. I tried "finding my library" when I restarted iphoto (holding down option) but it did not reload. I'm more than sure my library still exists as it shows me a file size of 1.52 gb. There are three items in the trash that I cannot put back in my library -- iphoto.db, Thunbs64.data and Album.data.xml
S-O-S!!!!

That's not a problem -- it's actually pretty easy to do that unintentionally. Quit iPhoto, if it's running.
Here's what you need to do... Rename the outermost iPL folder by adding "-x" to the name. Then drag the inner iPL folder out into the Pictures folder. Make sure this folder (the one you just pulled out) is named exactly "iPhoto Library".
Look once more for that com.apple.iPhoto.plist file (you should be able to find one this time) and drag it to the trash. If you've done all these things, when you start iPhoto, you'll see a welcome screen, and iPhoto should open from this folder (don't do anything with the "-x" folder until we know everything is back to normal).

  • Backing up iPhoto library to SOS Online storage

The backup is suggesting I compress and zip my Iphoto library and back that file up.  I see that is an option, but I am not sure what to do next.  I think move the file to the desktop and then move it back to the photos folder afterward?  Do I have to unzip the folder?

    Nope
The rule is that the iPhoto library must always be on a volume formated Mac OS extended (journaled) - zipping it may or may not allow it to be stored on an incorrectly formatted volume
    I would not do it
If you do your first action should be to do a test restore and see if it works\
I assume you are zipping a copy of the iPhoto library - you can not use a zipped library with iPhoto
I use local hard drives for backup - I am not aware of anyone successfully using an online backup - but someday there will be a first time

  • I'm going to Kill iphoto... Complete freezing ALL the time

Okay - I'm about to throw my whole computer out the window. I can not get iphoto to run without freezing my whole computer. I have a new Intel mini with all the current updates. It all started a few weeks ago when i bought my new canon 5d. I was using the canon 20d and was perfectly fine with my computer and iphoto. when i changed cameras, i installed some of the mac software that came with it, but i didn't like it so i got rid of it. This is when all **** broke lose. All I did to get rid of the software was move it to the trash can, and then empty it. I don't know if there are any hidden files that i need to remove... but anyway - on to my problem.
The problem started with trying to import photos into iphoto. I use a card reader and the computer would freeze about 1/2 way through the import. I was able to avoid the freezing sometimes by first copying the files to the desktop, then importing them to iphoto. Now, the computer will freeze on startup of iphoto, or after scrolling through the pictures, or after clicking on a photo, or after clicking on the preferences... pretty much anything you do will cause it to freeze. And when i say freeze, i don't mean spinning color wheel, i mean total freeze, no mouse, no response... You have to turn off the computer to restart.
Now... on to my own trouble shooting. I've read through the forums and took it upon myself to do the following (in order)
    1. Deleted album.xml , restart iphoto
    2. Deleted apple.com.iphoto in preferences, restarted
    3. Used Old Toad's Tutorial number one, restarted.
    4. Moved library from External HD to internal HD, formatted HD as Mac Extended then rebuilt iphoto library and imported photos.
5a Formatted external HD as Mac OS journaled and did #4
5b Formatted external HD as MS DOS and did #4.
    6. Deleted Iphoto.app and reinstalled from DVD, downloaded update.
    7. Downloaded Onyx and ran cache cleanup as well as optimize
    8. held shift, option, command to rebuild libray.
So those are things i've done, and they are pretty much in order. I've spent all day on this today and I haven't gotten anywhere. My computer runs fine otherwise. Anybody have any suggestions? Also - it appears that i can use iphoto when the library is on the internal HD, but this is speculation based on it not crashing immediately and without any serious use. Unfortunately I can't keep my entire library on the internal HD because it is too big. Thanks and any help is much appreciated!

This freezing reminds me of really old Macs, long ago, in the days of the old-school peripherals like SCSI drives, terminators, scanners and the like. If you had a SCSI conflict, like the wrong device ID's or something, you'd freeze up like that. Back in those days you'd call 800-SOS-APPLE (AAPL?) and they'd run you through disconnecting all your extra hardware - Jaz and Zip drives, CD burners, scanners etc and then eliminate them one by one by adding them incrementally and testing for the freeze/bomb dialog.
But, today we have Firewire and none of those ancient issues (no free lifetime tech support either). My iMac's ports are all full, and I only know which devices are connected when I have to remove something for another device. iSight, scanner, card reader, external hard drive, USB soundsticks, etc. You wouldn't happen to have any SCSI devices hooked up, would you?
Out of curiosity, have you tried a different USB/Firewire port for the hard drive? Or run the hardware test DVD that comes with your computer? This weird freezing seems to suggest a problem with the computer, RAM or network more than a device. Bad devices, in my experience, cause kernel panics, not freezing.

  • I cannot open my iPhoto library

When opening iPhoto, the system is asking me "Which photo library do you want iPhoto to use?"; all I get is a blank space without the option to choose a library. When I click "Other Library", I see my library "iPhoto Library" but it is not doing anything when I click Open. When I try to open it directly from my user section to view as a regular file, it takes me to iPhoto and to the same screen prompting me to choose a library. All of my pictures are on there and now I can't retrieve them. SOS!

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

I didn't find anything helpful googling...
Anybody have any idea that "Invalid SOS parameters for sequential JPEG" means, and if I should be concerned? As you can see, no hint in the message as to WHICH image it refers to, so I can only imagine importing a few events at a time to try to track down where it is happening, if it is something to be worried about.
    Thanks,

That's coming from the JPEG decoding software. SOS stands for *start of scan*. A sequential JPG is an image where all the data flows from top to bottom as opposed to a progressive scan JPG were the data is interlaced.
Anyway to make a long story short, it could indicate that the software encountered corrupted JPG images. Its not a fatal error in the sense of causing a program failure just possibly an image or images that may not display or display correctly.
You could search the console logs to see if the message ever showed up from iPhoto. At this point there isn't to much you can do about it. If your library isn;'t to big you could try and give a quick look at the JPG files to see if anything looks amiss.

  • Reinstalled OSX, ANY way to recover iPhoto photos?

I don't know exactly what the chap at the Apple store did (and can't find out as he didn't record any notes) though it effectively reinstalled the whole OS. Brand new, no trace of old files.
My SOs photos were on there in iPhoto... Is there ANY way I can retrieve them?
Thanks for any help, hopefully it's not the doghouse for me...

    No back up?
    Only hope at all:
File Salvage - you can download a free trial and it will scan the disk for you and tell you with might be recoverable. Actual recovery will require that you purchase the app. There may be many files with the same or similar names. Always recover the largest file size.
There are other such apps. Search on Macupdate or the App Store

  • Iphoto crashing after using mini-dvi to video adapter

Hi, IPhoto on my Macbook is crashing. I can open it, then as soon as I scroll down it locks up and I have to force quit.
This started happening right after I used a Mini-DVI to Video Adapter cable to hook my macbook up to my TV. The adapter/s-video connection worked and I was able to see the video on the tv. But iphoto immediately locked up the computer when I went to slide show and now it locks every time I open it.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you:)

It means that the issue resides in your existing Library.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.

  • Cannot open and update IPhoto after upgrading to OXYosemite

From the App store, I downloaded and installed OXYosemite. There are 2 more updates available: iPhoto and iMovie. When I try to upload them, the notice I get is "Update Unavailable with This Apple ID  This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled."
I have 2 apple IDs when I inquire about my ids. Signing in App Store with either of them, doesn't resolve the problem. I get the same notice. iTunes, Mac, mobile downloads, all use the same apple IP, only for the computer downloads from App Store isn't working.
    What should I do?
    Thanks, Sev

When using the mini-dvi to video adapter to connect to my widescreen tv (via composite), to show iPhoto slideshows, the transistions between slides dont apear and there are no ken burns effects. The slideshow runs fine on my MacBook display (ie when not conected to the tv), and the is no other distortion or flickering (as reported in other threads), this seems odd to me or is it just a limitation of analogue output.

  • I create a birthday calendar in iCal and then click on it in iphoto at the begining of the calendar project each year.  Some how the birthday did not populate the photo calendar.  Is there a way to add the birthday iCal calendar into the calendar project?

I created a birthday calendar to use in iphoto for calendar.  When a new calendar project is started each year, I click on it in.  Some how the birthday did not populate the photo calendar this year.  The photo calendar is almost complete.  Is there a way to add the birthday iCal calendar into the calendar project? I would prefer not to start over.

    Hi,
If you first select the calendar on the left, so that its background is highlighted blue/grey, when you make a new events they should be added to that calendar.
    Best wishes

  • How can I restore an iPhoto library from Time Machine (ML) - when I TM doesn't see the backup??

    Hi,
I recently did a Time Machine backup of my MacBook Pro (Mountain Lion) onto an external HDD. Around the time of the last backup, my system was behaving funny so I decided to rebuild the OS X.
Because the last TM backup was of a system that as mentioned, was somewhat 'unstable', and I only had a few backups available (didn't have TM running too long beforehand) - I decided not to use TM to 'restore' my system. I just did  a clean install of ML and planned on pulling files over manually. I'd done this before and it worked a treat.
This time ran into a snag. The backup disk TM used was an external HDD which I wanted to upgrade (suffice to say it works fine). So, I needed to move the backup.backupdb directory to my other HDD. The copy seemed to work fine ... so far so good.
I installed the new ML OS on my MacBook Pro and that was fine too. I was able to pull most of my files over by going into the TM backup and copying what I needed.
BUT, for some reason, this didn't work for the iPhoto library?
Alas, I found that you need to do a 'restore' iPhoto library file from whithin TM. So I fired up TM and noticed that it didn't recognise the old backup file located on the HDD. I.e. when I turned on TM, pointed it to the external HDD (where I copied the previous backup to), it started a fresh backup.
So ... my question is - "How do I restore the iPhoto library if I can't get to it from TM?"
Thanks in advance to anyone that can help! The last 15 years of photos are stored in this library!

    Hi ...
I've found a solution to my problem.
Time Machine locates extenal HDD backups differently depending if they were done via a network or via a USB/FireWire/Thunderbolt connection.
My initial backup was done via a direct Thunderbolt connection. I ran into the above issue b/c the second time when I tried looking for the backup file the HDD was conencted to my iMac and I was accessing it via a network conenction.
I simply connected the drive directly to my MacBook pro and ... voila. I was able to see the backup, select the iPhoto library and begin the restore.
    Hope this helps.
BTW - I found this out by reading the 'blue box' selection on this page: http://pondini.org/TM/E2.html
    (Thanks goes to Pondini!)

  • I am trying to move my wife's iPhoto '08 library to my new iMac for iPhoto '11.

I am trying to move my wife's iPhoto (2007) library on a Macbook to my new iMac for iPhoto '11.  First, when I opened iPhoto on the iMac it asked me to create a library, which I did.  Then I imported her photos via a wireless network to my "new" library.  However, when it finally finished importing, it had imported 3 copies of each photo from her library.  I deleted the "new" library and started over.
Second, I opened iPhoto on the iMac and chose to use "other library."  I chose my wife's shared iPhoto library and it began transferring the photos to the new iMac (or so I thought).  This worked beautifully as it only brought over single photos and not 3 copies like discussed above.  After editing the new library and adding some photos from an old PC, I shut down iPhoto.  A few hours later I tried to open iPhoto on the iMac and it gave me the opening screen again with choices to create a new library or use a different library.  As it turns out, my wife's Macbook and been disconneted from our wireless network.  I was able to figure out that that unless my wife's Macbook is connected to the network then I cannot access the iPhoto library on my iMac.  I was under the impression that I had copied her library to my computer and that the photo files were now on the hard drive of the iMac.  So when her computer is offline I can no longer access the imported library.  I want her library to stay on the iMac as we plan to sell her Macbook.  As you now know, we cannot access her iPhoto library on the Macbook since she is running an older version of iPhoto.
So, what I would like to do is to completely transfer the photos from her Macbook to my new iMac and be able to access them on the iMac regardless of whether she is on the network or not because we plan to sell her Macbook to a friend.  Thank you for any help you can provide.

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
Then hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
and select the Library that you moved.  That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
Your first option didn't work because you imported one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
Your second option didn't work because you simply referenced her library on the old machine.
