IPhoto (4) crashes immediately on new install
Hi - Here's the back story. I just took over someone elses G4 15" laptop running 10.4. We installed the OS that came with it a few years (Panther?) ago performing an "erase and install". Then dove right in an upped to Tiger. Then we migrated files from my old iBook using the Migration Manager(?).
That was last week. Today I started to use iPhoto (4) for the first time and it crashed within a minute. All of my photos are in it already. I discarded "com.apple.iPhoto.plist" and relaunched. It gave me a "welcome" type screen and then crashed.
How do I fix this?
TIA some expert advice.
lefty
Hi again - Here are the steps I've already taken.
Booted from the G4 Software Install disc and used Disk Utility from the Installer to Repair Permissions.
Shut down then Safe Booted and ran Disk Utility and repaired perms again from Safe Mode.
Rebooted and then I discarded the .iPhoto.plist.
iPhoto will still not launch beyond 4 or 5 seconds.
I had a similar problem with iCal but all the Reboot and Repairs fixed that app. Not so with iPhoto.
Please - some expert input. Thanks.
leftyslm
N.B. - I'm running OS X 10.4 (no updates)

IPhoto won't open after new install and restore of back-up
Hi guys
My hard drive just died (for the second time in 6 months!) so I have just gotten the computer back with a new drive. I did a new install of Tiger from my original install CDs, did the download thing to get all the updates, and ran a "restore" from my external drive using iBackup (http://www.grapefruit.ch/iBackup//index.html) to restore all my previous system settings, documents, etc. So far this seems to have worked well, a couple of 3rd party applications didn't re-install - specifically Neo Office and WiFind - but I was able to manually install those and everything seems to be working fine.
Except iPhoto. It won't open. When I click the dock icon it bounces once and does nothing. No little arrow under it or anything. Nothing at all happens when I click the icon in Finder (in the Applications folder). When I searched it in spotlight it told me there was a file called iphoto.crash.log, so I went and had a look at that hoping it would tell me the problem, but I don't understand it. I'm not particularly good at the behind the scenes stuff with computers.
Wondering what I should do now - if someone can perhaps interpret the log file and find the issue if that would help, or if I should uninstall and re-install iPhoto by itself (and if so, how?), or if there is something else that may be causing the issue. I noticed there are a few files relating to it when I search with spotlight but I don't know which of them might be relevant. I could post a screenshot if that is allowed, or post the log file if it would help?
Thanks in advance for any advice or help!
Regards,
Chloë400 Updates???
Did you Repair Permissions before & after each one?
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.

The combo update for Intel-based Macs...

Repair Permissions before & after re-install, then reboot again each time.
If all the above do not resolve the problem, then it's time for an Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space...

I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...

That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing. -
IPhoto '09 crashes immediately after start and no one can fix it
Hi all,
I have been using iPhoto '09 for some time now. As of yesterday, I was uploading more photos into my library and it unexpectedly crashed. I re-launched it and now it only runs for about 20 seconds and quits. I have tried everything from uninstalling and re-installing the software and it still continues to quit. Anyone know how I can fix these please? I have all the latest updates and I'm so frustrated!

cr2: 0x00000000I have the same problem. (iPhoto won't launch) It happened after I took some video clips from iPhoto09 into iMovie09. I just used imovie for the first time, really COOL! However, after I processed my little clip for different sizes, I went into iweb to put it on a page; but before I did that, I wanted to add photos to a page first, so I opened iphoto and OH NO!!!!!! I photo would NOT launch!!!! I just get a blank screen and blank library area. iPhoto also will not load the photos in the media area (that is now blank). I tried doing several different things as directed by your discussion forums that I searched, but still no success. Can SOMEBODY help me????? I really really don't want to start a new library.... I really need things as they are because I use a lot of my iphoto folder contents in my sites on iweb...

Iphoto keeps crashing on my new mac
I bought a brand new mac a couple of weeks ago. Apple's One to One transferred 17000 photos from my pc to my mac. After the first use, iphoto crashed on me. The Apple guy said oh, this can happen, it's a fluke. Blah blah. So he (I guess) reloaded the program and put the photos back in. So a week later I tried to flip through photos again - no real editting or moving stuff around, etc. AND it crashed again. I am so furious and upset that my brand new mac is having this issue. I want it fixed asap before I regret buying a mac. This never happened with my pc, ironically. I don't understand why this happens or how to fix it. And I don't want to be fixing this every time I use Iphoto.
1. Is iphoto a junk program? If it is, please let me know now before I waste more time on it.
2. Now that I've lost use of iphoto again, what do I do?
3. How do I avoid this tomorrow after I fix this mess, so that it doesn't happen again?
I've read a lot on these help pages that said the app went bad (doesn't that mean it's a bad app overall) and it has to be reloaded and the library reinstalled, or something along those lines. I don't understand what that means - where are my photos, how are they not lost or are they lost cause Iphoto went bad? How can I protect my photos, etc? This seems so complicated.
Please helpTry this: launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If it doesn't then your current library is damaged.
If that's the case make a temporary, duplicate copy of your library and apply the three fixes in order as necessary.
Fix #1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your HD/User/Home()/ Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your HD/User/Home()/Library /Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
Fix #3
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If the three fixes above fail start over from scratch as follows:
Start over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
1. Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
2. Open the library package like this.
3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
4. Drag the Origianls (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.

Fixed a problem of repeated crashing with a new install of Firefox 28 on Windows 8.1
This isn't so much a question as a contribution of solution.
On a new computer running Windows 8.1 a new installation of Firefox 28 was repeatedly crashing or freezing ("no response"). Loading pages could be slow, and scrolling jagged. Totally unusable, especially after playing content with Shockwave.
Although I had not installed any plugins apart from Shockwave and Adobe Acrobat, I had a look and was surprised to see several that I had never asked for. I deactivated those I do not think I need:
Intel Identity Protection Technology
Photo Gallery
WildTangent Games App V2 Presence Detector.
Since deactivating these, Firefox is running fine. But I had been obliged to use another navigator for a week until finding the time to research the problem.
Why are these unasked-for and obviously (for at least one) troublesome plug-ins installed by default? It's not doing Firefox any good!I return to this thread more than 3 months later, during which time I have not had a single day's satisfactory use of the latest versions of Firefox over Windows 8.1 with Flash content. Not very stable at the best of times (constant increase of memory usage) and when accessing Flash content, ffx came as near as I've ever seen an app come, to getting drunk. Memory goes through the roof, repeated freezes, disappearances/reappearances in the UI and very difficult to shut down. I've tried all the recommended fixes, disabling hardware acceleration, protected mode etc. to no avail (but a LOT of wasted time).
I've been having to use IE to access Flash content.
Last night I finally came to what, for me, is a quite radical decision to downgrade. I'm not _recommending_ this to anyone, but some may find it helpful as long as they're aware of risks and take appropriate precautions. Note that the official Mozilla archive page puts switching to a different browser _before_ returning to an older version of Ffx.
I've gone back to Ffx 28.0 dated 2014.03.15 (the Ides of March, I now note...) and Flash 10.3.183.90 which I downgraded to a bit earlier as part of my attempts to find a solution. Firefox is now stable, memory usage reasonable (currently 202MB for 6 tabs including some Flash content).
I currently have only one comment, handling of marquees (which has always been jerky in Ffx) I now see is using ''excessive processor time (up to 15% on a Core i3 with 4 GB RAM!)'' and jumps of 5-10 MB in memory usage. The latter returns to initial level at each cycle '''but I rather suspect doesn't in Ffx 31''', which might contribute to an apparent leak. [Edit : this seems all right on a different machine, so will have to find what's causing the problem on mine!]
Fortunately the cpu and memory usage disappear as soon as the marquee is pushed out of the viewport... so I conclude Firefox is not handling them if it doesn't have to show them.
Will post back with any developments but at the moment I'm staying with these versions! -
Iphoto 9 very unstable, Create new library. Import one picture = crash
Reloaded Iphoto 9.
Create new library.
Import one picture,
Iphoto 9 crashes immediately.
Same behavior I was trying to fix.
plist trashed. permissions repaired,
Iphoto Lib manager also crashes Iphoto 9.
macbook 2.26 running 10.6.8
appreciate any insight.Did you delete the receipts before reinstalling?
To re-install iPhoto
1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5: Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows: In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
/var/db/receipts/
2c: on 10.7 they're at
/private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List. -
I have an infuriating problem with Elements 4 crashing immediately after an install on mac OSX 10.4.11, can anyone help ?
I was given the computer, which still had Elements 4 on it although it always crashed on opening, i removed the program and bought a 2nd hand hard copy of Elements 4 from eBay.
When i install the new copy it opens up with the "credits" but at the bottom right it still shows the past owners name as licensee briefly, then crashes before fully opening.
Does anyone know what is going on? I know it's an old version but i find elements4 perfect for my needs
Thankyou for reading.
SimonMore information needed. Are you saying you're just running the computer from the PO's user account? I would very strongly recommend erasing the disk and starting over with a fresh install of OS X for a number of reasons.

Intermittent crashes on new install
Hi,
I am seeing intermittent crashes on a new install of Arch.
I see different messages on crash, quite often
INFO: rcu_preempt_state detected stalls on CPUs/tasks:
also
BUG: Bad page map in process bash
and other processes.
sometimes:
CPU: 1 PID: 1 Comm: shutdown tainted
I am vague here in the specific messages because it's not always the same and partly because I usually lose the logs due to hard restarting the machine.
I realize that the information here is somewhat lacking so I don't expect a magic answer to solve the problem. I am looking for advice on where to go from here to try and get it fixed.
The system seems normal most of the time then crashes without warning. When it does happen it will almost certainly get stuck at what seems to be the very last stage of shutdown (that is if it allowed me to use the shell). It might or might not go wrong after reboot then.
I've done 2 cycles of test using memtest, both passing.
Any advice? Could a faulty hard drive possible be the cause?TheSaint wrote:How much big is your RAM and swap ?
Perhaps you may add one more swap file, for testing purposes.
I suspect the most problem starts within swapping. You may look at this for references.
I've 4GB RAM and another 4GB swap partition.
I've tried using swapfile instead of the partition already to no avail.
I've also played with the swap performance settings, again, to no avail.
I've some more information to add now:
I left the system on last night and using it normally to see whether the hard drive replacement actually fixed the crashes (assuming the swap issues were separate). After 24 hours and some fair use, I was optimistic that the drive was in fact at fault. I then made some changes to a smb.conf file and restarted using:
sudo systemctl restart smbd.service
The systemd returned with an error saying smbd failed to start. I checked the logs and smbd reported a segfault. I try again several times, leave it a few minutes and try again (having reverted to the last working smb.conf), segfault still occurs. I then checked "free -m" and noticed that the memory is mostly unused but the entire RAM is used for cache (which I guess is normal anyway). I then cleared the cache:
echo 3 | tee /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches
and immediately I was able to restart smbd.
A few hours go by and I do some rsync'ing to a CIFS mounted share. Partway through I get the following:
Jan 15 18:17:01 engserv sudo[7859]: sth : TTY=pts/0 ; PWD=/mnt/smb/share2 ; USER=root ; COMMAND=/usr/bin/rsync --info=PROGRESS2 -a /mnt/smb/pc1/Proj/All/ /media/data/Proj/All/

Adobe Creative Cloud installer (/Applications/Utilities/Adobe Creative Cloud/ACC/Creative Cloud.app) crashes immediately on launch, so I can't install CC on a new iMac 5K running Yosemite. Launching the app to fetch the rest of the CC programs crashes, saying "Creative Cloud quit unexpectedly."
I have an old CS3 Photoshop install, a newish Lightroom install, and now I need to install Premiere from my work Adobe ID. I think this may be the crux of the problem. If the CC Cleaner app worked as advertised, I could wipe the old Photoshop install and just use the new CC Photoshop and everything would be cool, but the CC Cleaner doesn't work. It looks like it works, but the problem persists. In fact, Adobe support told me via twitter that Adobe's installer basically doesn't work on migrated Macs (new Macs where old data has been set up from backups). They called it an OS conflict, but I pointed out that everything else works, so it's pretty much Adobe's conflict.
It seems like a permissions issue, and Adobe thinks it's a permissions issue blocking the ACC applet, yet I've repaired HD permissions and did Disk Repair, run Adobe's CC Cleaner multiple times, attempted to install CC in another admin account on the machine, attempted to install CC from Root, and repeated all this after reinstalling OS X via rebooting with Cmd+R, always end with the same result: Creative Cloud quit unexpectedly.
They also suggested I install on a clean disk, one that hasn't been migrated. To do that, I supposed I have to bring it back to Apple, since I have neither a Yosemite install disc, nor a drive to put one in.
I found an article called "CC applications close immediately after launch" but this tip doesn't work because Creative Cloud applet is the app I can't launch.
https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/cc-applications-crash-immediately-launch.html
They sound like they're trying to help, but the responses sound like utter BS, and, like the support website, i'm going around in circles. I'm sure I'm not the only person who's had this problem, right? RIGHT?? I'm sure the answer is buried here someplace...
Thanks in advance! There doesn't seem to be an uninstaller for CS3, and I've tried the CC Cleaner tool several times. It doesn't work and it is not correctly documented anywhere. For example, there is no log file at "/Users/[user name]/Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool.log" as one of the Adobe pages states. For example, there is no log file at "/Users/[user name]/Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool.log" so I can't find any success or error states of the tool.
There is a log file at "/Users/[me]/Library/Logs/ACC.log." Would there be anything in there that could shine light on install issues vs. uninstall issues?
Regardless, running Cleaner and then attempting to install ACC repeatedly leads to the error "Creative Cloud quit unexpectedly" upon launching it or rebooting (which launches it automatically). I've been trying various things for weeks to no avail yet. -
My iPhoto keeps crashing after installing the latest update, can't do anything!
My iPhoto keeps crashing after installing the latest update, can't do anything! It used to crash when importing but now I'm at the point where I open the software and after 2 seconds it crashes (nothing connected either). What to do? Can't access any photos
Try this: launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If you can create a new library and import some test photos then the problem lies with your original library.
If that's the case make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
Fix #2
If iPhoto crashes while trying to create a new library then try this:
Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
If that fails to help a reinstall of iPhoto is indicated. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and from the /var/db/receipts/ folder,
Then install iPhoto from the disk it came on originally and apply all relavant updaters.
P.S. If you're still running Tiger, 10.4.6, then the above may not apply. If you're running a newer system you should update your profile so we have a better idea of where you're at.

What is Activation?
When you purchase an Adobe product, your license allows you to install on two computers. To enforce this limit (and prevent others from using what you have paid for), your serial number comes with two Activations. Activation happens when you launch the product for the first time (it does not happen during the installation process). Your Adobe product contacts the Adobe activation servers and lets us know that you are using the product on a specific computer (using an anonymous, unique machine code). If you'd like to move your product to a new computer, simply uninstall the application, which lets you deactivate it from the computer.
I have already installed on two computers, and one of them crashed, what do I do?
Often you will find yourself in a situation that a computer has crashed and you had an activated Adobe product on that system. Depending on how much you use the Adobe product, this could be a major issue. If you have crashed your first computer and have not yet installed on a second, then there is nothing to worry about, simply install and use the product as normal. Obviously you can't uninstall and deactivate the product on the dead computer. At this point, you will have to contact our customer service department to have your activations cleared up from the back-end servers. This should be a very quick, painless process to accomplish. Simply call: 1-800-642-3623

Please review: Adobe software activationHello Don,
I think there may be a misunderstanding on your part. The CDs that you receive as part of Developer Suite do not actually contain "updates" to a previously installed version of LabVIEW; they are stand-alone installers. Every quarterly shipment of the Developer Suite CDs contains the full version of LabVIEW, along with the included toolkits and other National Instruments software.
In other words, if you have any set of Developer Suite CDs, you can start a new install of LabVIEW et al. immediately. You don't need any so-called "original" CDs.
Good luck!

New install of Premiere on Mavericks crashes every time on export -
Hi all,
I just switched to a fresh install of Mavericks on a clean hard drive. I have not installed any other programs except Premiere Pro CC and Prelude. (aside from a couple of simple items like Dropbox and Evernote). I have not installed any video codecs except what was stock with Mavericks. YET, Prelude can't import (crashes every time I click the "Import" button), and Premiere crashes immediately any time I try to export ANY file. The editing process seems to work fine. It's as if there's no ability to export at all.
The importing and exporting was working fine on the previous version of Mavericks. Am I missing something? Is there some video plugin or preferance that I'm supposed to install. It's very surprising because it is a completely clean install, which means to me that nothing is conflicting, but perhaps something is missing.
Thanks for your help.Hi Noriega93,
Please try following steps:
1. Open Applications > Adobe Media Encoder CC > Right Click on Adobe Media Encoder CC Icon > Get Info
Click on Select your username and Provide Read & Write Permission to it.
2 Click on Go to folder & type ~/Library > Preferences > rename Adobe to Adobe.old
3.~/Library > Application Support rename Adobe to Adobe.old
4. Rename Adobe folder to Adobe2 in Documents > Adobe
5. Please try to create a new admin account and then try to launch Media Encoder in New User account.
Please let us know if this works or not.
Regards,

You need to re-install iPhoto because it's missing bits of itself:
Library not loaded:...
Reason: image not found
To re-install iPhoto
1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2. Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name
3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only...’
