Iphoto 4 help replaced by iphoto 5 help

I'm using iPhoto 4.0.3 and when I go to the Help menu and select "iPhoto Help", all the information and screen shots are for iPhoto 5, which is really no help at all. How did this happen and how do I get my iPhoto 4 help back?

I have the same problem. When I search Help for "burn", it directs me to the "Share" menu. There is no "Share" menu in 4.0.3 .
There are operations specific to iPhoto 4 that I need to perform before upgrading to iPhoto 6. If I can't, then I may be stuck on iPhoto 4 for some time as I experiment with shots in the dark to find solutions.
How do I get the iPhoto 4 Help restored? Where did it go?

Have you verified that the iPhoto applications is not in the Applications folder or somewhere else on the hard drive?
To do so download and use  Find Any File to search for "iPhoto.app" because FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't.  If the application is somewhere else on the HD FAF will find it.  However, I doubt that it will be there but it's worth a search.

Trying to re-download & re- install my iPhoto since replacing my SSD. Its no longer free & I have had it downloaded/ installed it when I installed OS Mavericks the first time. Now since the SSD is replaced, not sure it recognizes it & does not let me download/ installed iPhoto for free. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you -

  • Help with iPhoto migration/upgrade to Aperture, after HDD replacement and clean install.

I'm getting ready to replace the internal HDD in my iMac, and perform a clean install.
    I'm currently running:
    OS X Lion, version 10.7.5
    iPhoto '09, version 8.1.2
    After the clean install:
The latest version of OS X Mavericks
Installing a fresh version of Aperture, and *hopefully* importing all of my photos from my old iPhoto, into new Aperture (193 GB worth of photos).
What's the best (specifically: SAFEST) way to go about making sure my photos successfully import from my old HDD, and old version of iPhoto, into a new version of Aperture on what will basically be a brand new computer?  Is this just a matter of dragging and dropping the "iPhoto Library" to an external USB drive, then somehow bringing that folder into Aperture after my machine is up and running with it's new hardware and software?
Thanks in advance for your help!

From what I understand, iLife 11 comes bundled with 10.9
No  --  no version of iLfe or of iPhoto comes bundled with any OS
if I simply drag and drop my existing iPhoto library to an external drive right now (despite being a library from an old version of iPhoto), I'll be able to simply import that library into the bundled version of iPhoto 11 that'll come with my clean install of 10.9, without any corruption of image library, loss of metadata, etc...?
    Sort of
1 - the EHD must be formatted Mac OS extended (journaled)
2 - there is no iLife '11 bundled with Mavericks (or any other OS) - you must pruchase iPhoto '11 in the App store
3 - there is no importing of anything involved - you simply drag your iPhtoo library to the pictures folder of the new system and launch iPhoto letting it upgrade the library
No corruption, lss of data or other problems - unless somethng goes wrong - which is why you need a backup before doing this - your copy on the EHD is fine - just do not open it directly - make sure you are opening a copy

HHi, I recently got a newer desktop to replace my older laptop and I upl my pics from my picture keeper and I see them in images but I can't find iPhoto! Help please.

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?  A new iMac will have Yosemite. Confirm.
what system version are you running? Download iPhoto 6 from the App store.  Did you?
what do you mean by "picture keeper"?
have you looked in the Applications folder for an iPhoto application?
is your iPhoto Library in your Pictures folder ?

I have an iMac with the recalled seagate drives and I have everything backed up on Timecapsule and on Carbonite. I also copied all my photos to a file prior to having the hard drive replaced. The merge back to the mac worked well except that now iphot can't locate my library. In iphoto 11 they moved it out of the pictures file and it is hidden. Does anyone know how to find it so I don't have to reorganize 20,000 pictures?
    Thank you!

They didn't, I'm afraid. The iPhoto Library is still stored in the Pictures Folder by default, and it's not hidden.
Can you see it in Time Machine?

I need your help with a decision to use iPhoto.  I have been a PC user since the mid 1980’s and more recently have used ACDSee to manage my photo images and Photoshop to edit them.  I have used ProShow Gold to create slideshows.  I am comfortable with my own folder and file naming conventions. I currently have over 23,000 images of which around 60% are scans going back 75 years.  Since I keep a copy of the originals, the storage requirements for over 46,000 images is huge.  180GB plus.
I now have a Macbook Pro and will add an iMac when the new models arrive.  For my photos, I want to stay with Photoshop which also gives me the Bridge.  The only obvious reason to use iPhoto is to take advantage of Faces and the link to iMovie to make slideshows.  What am I missing and is using iPhoto worth the effort?
If I choose to use iPhoto, I am not certain whether I need to load the originals and the edited versions. I suspect that just the latter is sufficient.  If I set PhotoShop as my external editor, I presume that iPhoto will keep track of all changes moving forward.  However, over 23,000 images in iPhoto makes me twitchy and they are appear hidden within iPhoto.  In the past, I have experienced syncing problems with, and database errors in, large databases.  If I break up the images into a number of projects, I loose the value of Faces reaching back over time.
Some guidance and insight would be appreciated.  I have a number of Faces questions which I will save for later.

Bridge and Photoshop is a common file-based management system. (Not sure why you'd have used ACDSEE as well as Bridge.) In any event, it's on the way out. You won't be using it in 5 years time.
Up to this the lack of processing power on your computer left no choice but to organise this way. But file based organisation is as sensible as organising a Shoe Warehouse based on the colour of the boxes. It's also ultimately data-destructive.
Modern systems are Database driven. Files are managed, Images imported, virtual versions, lossless processing and unlimited editing are the way forward.
For a Photographer Photoshop is overkill. It's an enormously powerful app, a staple of the Graphic Designers' trade. A Photographer uses maybe 15% to 20% of its capability.
Apps like iPhoto, Lightroom, Aperture are the way forward - for photographers. There's the 20% of Photoshop that shooters actually use, coupled with management and lossless processing. Pop over to the Aperture or Lightroom forums (on the Adobe site) and one comment shows up over and over again... "Since I started using Aperture/ Lightroom I hardly ever use Photoshop any more..." and if there is a job that these apps can do, then the (much) cheaper Elements will do it.
The change is not easy though, especially if you have a long-standing and well thought out filing system of your own. The first thing I would strongly advise is that you experiment before making any decisions. So I would create a Library, import 300 or 400 shots and play. You might as well do this in iPhoto to begin with - though if you’re a serious hobbyist or a Pro then you'll find yourself looking further afield pretty soon. iPhoto is good for the family snapper, taking shots at birthdays and sharing them with friends and family.
Next: If you're going to successfully use these apps you need to make a leap: Your files are not your Photos.
The illustration I use is as follows: In my iTunes Library I have a file called 'Let_it_Be_The_Beatles.mp3'. So what is that, exactly? It's not the song. The Beatles never wrote an mp3. They wrote a tune and lyrics. They recorded it and a copy of that recording is stored in the mp3 file. So the file is just a container for the recording. That container is designed in a specific way attuned to the characteristics and requirements of the data. Hence, mp3.
Similarly, that Jpeg is not your photo, it's a container designed to hold that kind of data. iPhoto is all about the data and not about the container. So, regardless of where you choose to store the file, iPhoto will manage the photo, edit the photo, add metadata to the Photo but never touch the file. If you choose to export - unless you specifically choose to export the original - iPhoto will export the Photo into a new container - a new file containing the photo.
When you process an image in iPhoto the file is never touched, instead your decisions are recorded in the database. When you view the image then the Master is presented with these decisions applied to it. That's why it's lossless. You can also have multiple versions and waste no disk space because they are all just listings in the database.
These apps replace the Finder (File Browser) for managing your Photos. They become the Go-To app for anything to do with your photos. They replace Bridge too as they become a front-end for Photoshop.
So, want to use a photo for something - Export it. Choose the format, size and quality you want and there it is. If you're emailing, uploading to websites then these apps have a "good enough for most things" version called the Preview - this will be missing some metadata.
So it's a big change from a file-based to Photo-based management, from editing files to processing Photos and it's worth thinking it through before you decide.

  • 2007 Macbook Pro suddenly coding over files, pictures, deleting itunes and iphoto albums, after it had been dropped in late november 2010. Apple specialists say they cannot find anything wrong. HELP!

I have a Macbook Pro, the last generation, not the most recent one. It fell about 2 feet in late November 2010 and had the screen and logicboard replaced right after. A day or two after that, I started to notice that my word documents, pictures files, pdf files, itunes library and iphoto library were coded over and deleted out of nowhere. When I click on it, it says it is not a compatible format or cannot be read, etc. However, this doesn't happen all the time and not with every file. I could open a new word document and begin it today, and tomorrow it will not be retreavable, but I have a document on my desktop that has been there since January and can still be opened, so this happens without warning.
I have taken it in to the Genius Bar at my local Apple store several times with this problem, and they say they cannot see anything wrong with my computer. On my most recent visit, the lady told me to buy an external hardrive, transfer everything onto it, then do a complete clean out of my computer and reboot it I guess. If it doesn't continue, then that might have been the problem, but if it does continue, then it is obviously not that. I am really confused and I don't know if I should trust that this is the problem or just go ahead and buy a new computer all together. I don't have applecare anymore.
    Help me!!! I am desperate.

Does your MBP still have its original hard drive? If so, it may have started to go south. The average useful life of a notebook drive is 3-5 years, and if yours is the original, it would be about 4 years old. The drop could also have affected it.
It might be worth booting from your install disc and repairing your boot disk. It sounds like you could have some directory issues. Repair until there is nothing left to repair. If Disk Utility cannot repair the drive, you will need a stronger utility like Disk Warrior or possibly a new drive.
It also sounds like you may have some software corruption, which can happen if you have hard drive problems. Have you tried reinstalling the OS? You would want to make a backup first on an external drive and then use the archive and install feature and then update the OS.
You might want to download and run SMART Utility:
    http://www.volitans-software.com/smart_utility.php
You can download the demo and run it several times for free. SMART Utility seems to be somewhat more critical than Disk Utility, and may be able to detect impending drive failure sooner.
If the drive checks out OK, then you can follow the advice you got from the genius and make a clone of your boot drive using Super Duper or carbon Copy Cloner on the external drive. You could boot from the clone you made and see how your Mac does when booted from a different drive. If all is good, you can reformat the internal drive and clone back to it.
If all you need is a replacement hard drive, then your Mac is likely worth fixing. I too have a 2007 MBP, and I replaced my hard drive right after Applecare expired, as the drive started to fail a week after Applecare ran out. I put in a Western Digital 500 GB 7200 RPM Scorpio Black, and have been running on it ever since. I have also upped my RAM to 6 GB and my OS to Lion. Not all the features of Lion work on a 2007 MBP--the trackpad does not support Gestures, and AirDrop is not supported. Even so, I expect this Mac to last me a few more years.
iFixit has instructions for replacing the hard drive, and OWC has both good RAM and kits for hard drive replacements. My gut feeling is that your hard drive is behind the weird symptoms you are experiencing.
If you are ready for a new computer, by all means get one--there are some great choices. However, you should be able to fix your old Mac for not very much money and get some more use out of it.
    Good luck!

2:  When I try to Upgrade my Library.iPhoto file so I can open it in iPhoto it says I need to finish by opening in iPhoto, but then when I do, it tells me it first needs to be upgraded in the iPhoto Library Upgrader... Vicious circle.  Please, help!  Just trying to recover about 3 years worth of photos...

    Hi!  Thanks for responding!
I have iPhoto 9.5.1, I am on OS X Version 10.9.5 on a MacBook Pro with 2.66 GHz
My current "iPhoto Library" file is OK (I can open it with iPhoto), however I cannot access the old one from iPhoto 6 titled Library.iPhoto
I tried right clicking and choosing the application, it did not work.
"exactly how did you "I got to my files and backed them up"" - I showed the contents of my Pictures folder, and it opened up the folders in Finder and I copied them to an external hard drive.  In my Picture folder I have several folders of Photos plus the iPhoto Library files (old & current)
I do have old back ups, but they are from April, and I recently imported 5 months of photos from my iPhone, so the iPhoto Library I copied after showing contents is the one I need.

  • I recently uploaded some pics and videos from an ipad and a camera. I put them all on Iphoto and backed them up in my personal folder. I then trimmed one of the videos and dragged and dropped that into the master folder(pictures). Its now gone!! HELP!?!?!

I rencently added all my photo's from my Ipad and Camera. There were photos and videos on both. The import was done through Iphoto and then transfered to my backup in my pictures folder. I then took one of my videos and trimmed it and then addded that trimmed version to my back up(pictures)albumn. It asked If i wanted to replace existing photo or cancel and I hit replace. Now the file plays great on Iphoto but I am unable to share it through any form(facebook, Imessage etc) and in my back up(pictures) it says the file in only 87kb. I dragged and dropped it from Iphoto to the desk top along with another important video, when I hit get info on both of them one of them is a full sized video(50mb or whatever) and the other one(the one I am trying to recover) is only the 87kb. I want this full file avaiable to me how can I get it back?? it is already deleted off the camera??? please please help me.

    Garret,
is your movie in your backup folder a Quicktime movie? Then probably only have the Quicktime wrapper in your backup folder, but not the referenced media in the file fork of the movie. If you see the full quality movie in iPhoto in QuickTime player, don't drag it from the browser to the Desktop, but use "File > Reveal in Finder > Original File" to show the movie in your iPhoto Library. Select the Movie when it is revealed and ctrl-click it to open it in Quicktime Player.
Export it from Quicktime Player with "Export to" and share it to iTunes. This way it will be converted to a .mp4 movie that embeds the missing resources.
You can drag the converted movie from iTunes to the Desktop or share it using to Media Browser to other applications.

  • Please help - my iphone is not being recognized by itunes or iphoto.

I recently had to have my hard drive replaced (by Apple under warranty). Ever since then, iphoto and itunes do not recognize my iphone. I had the same problem at my work computer today (a G4 tower running a lower version of OS X than I have at hoime), but the issue was resolved after I 'reset' my iphone (held down power button and main button, replugged in, etc.) No such luck at home after trying the reset/restart/reopen iphoto/itunes several times over.
-I checked Image Capture to see if iphoto was set to the default photo software viewer; it is.
-I updated my itunes software tonight. Didn't help.
    What else can I try??

  • Hard drive recently failed and iPhoto brings a -36 error when copying need help accessing image files

I recently updated my computer to mountain lion and after doing so my computer would no longer boot up.  I took it to the apple store and they told me that the hard drive was damaged and needed to be replaced.  They were booting my computer with an external drive and in doing so could access my computers HDD.  Upon starting to drag and drop files to a new hard drive I started to get a lot of -36 errors.  I proceeded to go go,e and create my own bootable thumb drive and try doing the same process with more time to look through it.  I have up till now been able to copy most of my files but have run into a problem with iPhoto.
I have been searching around for a while now and have yet to find a method that helps me in my particular situation so I am now asking for help myself. I will explain what my current system of file recovery is and see if anyone can help me out.
I have since then replaced the HDD in my computer and purchased a SATA external HDD enclosure for the original drive.  This allows me to still access all files and folders from the original drive.  I have managed to recover a majority of the files but have recently run into a problem with the iPhoto library.  Every time I try to drag and drop the iPhoto library to my new HDD it fails after "transferring" 2.02GB and tells me it has encountered a -36 error because some files cannot be read or written.  I believe I am using iPhoto '09, I will check and confirm that later.
I am looking for a way to open iPhoto's library and access the image files it seems to be hiding from me. Please understand that I cannot open the iPhoto library either, I have lost access to the library entirely and want to see if there are any image files that I can save.  I dont have the computer backed up recently and want to save my photos.  Thanks for looking and I'm hoping someone can help.

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command). Rebuild it to the Pictures Folder. This might overcome the -36 issue.
(This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.)
Failing that you're into recovering your Originals from the damaged Library and creating a new Library and starting over from scratch.

  • Help integrating iPhoto and Photoshop Elements 4

I bought Photoshop Elements 4 and would like to use it to edit my photos from iPhoto then take them back into iPhoto. Smtr said that's what he/she does. Could someone help me set up iPhoto to do that. I am not using Adobe Bridge thanks for the info.
Wow, PE 4 sure is powerful. Now I have a lot to do. Thanks for all the help.

    RL:
After setting iPhoto's preferences as Terence described be sure to set PSE4's color management to the following thru the Edit->Color Settings menu option:
If you want to be able to use both iPhoto's editor and PSE's then see the following:
Using 2 Image Editors in iPhoto
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and a 3rd party editor without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected the 3rd party editor as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". Then when you Control-click on an image, you can select "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu to edit in your selected editor.
And lastly, if you do any edit with PSE that causes PSE to want to change the extension to .psd, i.e. created a layered file or some of the more advanced edits, you MUST either flatten the image and force a save as a jpg file OR do a Save As to the desktop and then import the new .psd file. If you don't iPhoto will not know you did an edit and will still uses the original file.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Help - can't access photos in iPhoto library after a restore

After a hard drive death, I got a new hard drive and put lots of new photos on iPhoto. Then I found some very old backup discs and used these to restore old photos. Unfortunately this has wiped the new photos from iPhoto... BUT when I go through Finder I can see them under Pictures. When I attempt to import them back to iPhoto it says it can't import them as they are already in the iPhoto Library - but I can't see them when I'm in iPhoto! How do I get them back?!
I have a similar problem with iWeb - my website has disappeared and been replaced with the old version that has been restored. But I can't find where the other has gone.
    Please help!

    tsavage
Sounds like a damaged database file:
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums back.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
