IPhoto 4: photo library incompatible

When I loaded iPhoto this morning, it told me I needed to update my photo library to be compatible with this version of iPhoto. I'm not sure why it did that, as my last update was last month to version 4.0.3. So I clicked on the button to proceed and fifteen minutes later, I tried to load iPhoto agin. Now I get the message "You can't open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto". Not good. I then tried to download the latest version of iPhoto, but it requires $$ and there WASN'T anything wrong with my previous version.
Any guidance?
Thanks.
Ken
PowerBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Hi, Ken. Have you recently received some photos on a CD that might have been burned in a more recent version of iPhoto than your own? Is that CD in the computer now? If so, eject it, then try opening iPhoto again.
Any CD that's burned from within iPhoto contains an iPhoto Library folder — i.e., a complete iPhoto database of those photos that were burned to the CD. That's considerably more data than just the photos themselves, and your older version of iPhoto isn't able to open the newer database format created by iPhoto 5.x or 6.x. But neither is it smart enough to stop trying and resort to opening your own iPhoto Library instead: it just knocks itself out trying to open the one on the CD, and finally gives up with the error message you saw.
Remove the newer database from its field of vision, and iPhoto should return to normal — but you won't be able to import the photos from the CD into your version of iPhoto.
As a practical matter, if you know you're going to get photos from someone who has a newer version of iPhoto than you do, ask them to export the pix from iPhoto to the desktop and burn a CD for you in the Finder rather than in iPhoto. Then you'll be able to view and import the photos from the CD without any problem.
If you often unexpectedly receive pictures from people who have newer iPhoto versions, and you can't alert them to your need beforehand, you should upgrade to the latest version if at all possible, to save yourself and the others a lot of extra hassle and annoyance.

iPhoto: Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 8 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • Iphoto and photos library

I have updated to OS X 10.10.3 and moved onto photos from iPhotos....but in checking my hard disk, now I have iPhoto library and Photos library.
Should I keep both on my drive?
Why did Mac not automatically delete iPhotos library after successfully upgraded to Photos?
Is there any issue if I delete the iPhotos library?
    Thanks

Because that is not how it works - and although it looks like two libraries there is only one set of photos - with hard links so they both look like they are the same size
There is no issue if you delete the iPhoto library except you save very little space and make going back to iphoto impossible in case you would want to

  • After clean reinstall from Time Machine, iPhoto says: "photo library needs to be upgraded"

My iMac was reset to factory settings after the 1 TB HDD recall (replaced HDD).  I restored practically everything from Time Machine prior to the HDD replacement.  The only surprise so far is that when I start iPhoto for the first time, it says: "The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto.".  Of course I don't want it to corrupt all the photos and videos I have stored in there prior to the HDD replacement.  Should I click on "upgrade"?  Why is this showing up?  Nothing should have changed between before and after ...?

Well, that explains why it needs to upgrade the iPhoto Library, because your Mac now has version 9.2.3 whereas before it has 8.1.2.
I always like to understand what is going on before proceeding. I am guessing that Apple "restored" the 10.6.8 system but must have delivered it back to you with more recent versions of some apps like iPhoto (they probably don't keep all the old versions of those apps for these restores). I also believe that Time Machine usually does not replace a newer version of an Apple program (like iPhoto, Safari, Mail, etc.) when it is restoring like this. So I THINK this all makes sense.
So what I would do here is make a copy of your iPhoto Library (in case you don't like the results of what happens next), and then say "yes" when it asks to upgrade the iPhoto library to be used with the new version 9.2.3. The only reason this updating could go wrong is that there is some problem inside your database already, otherwise it should work fine. (I've upgraded through about ~ 4 versions of iPhoto over the past several years and have never had a problem with this step).
If you run into a problem after saying "yes," then you have your old Library still (the copy you'll have made) and can take steps to rebuid or repair it with a number of different tools before trying again.

  • How could I backup my iPhoto 08 photo library so it can be view in iPhoto 5

I have a 24" iMac with iLife 08 and a 12" iBook G4 with iLive 5 and I´ll like to view my photos when I´m out. I know it is time to by a new MacBook, but I´m on a budget.

  • Can iPhoto access its Photo Library if it is located on an external hard drive?

I have a MacBook (white, about 4 years old) and the hard drive is full, mostly of photos my iPhoto Library file is huge and I have two young children so I am taking lots of photos and will be taking more of course but I can't fit them on my computer and I'm not buying a new computer just for more space when I have a perfectly good G-Drive with over 200 GB of space. Is there a way to move (permanently and not just a copy) iPhoto's photo library to the external drive and then have iPhoto access the drive to store and retrieve the photos from this location? Just to be clear I'm not talking about backing it up I want to move the iPhoto Library to the external drive so my laptop isn't always full and so everything is on the external where there is plenty of room. Is this possible?

    Yes.
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Gone library "which photo library do you want iPhoto to use"

my photo library is gone!! and this message appear when trying to open iPhoto " which photo library do you want iPhoto to use" i have triend holding the option key and command key but leads me to the same message, Can anyone help please? i'm desperate

Does the file "iPhoto Library" simply no longer exist in your Pictures folder? You may have somehow erased it or put it in another location. Use Spotlight to search for "iPhoto Library" and see if you can find the file - the file will contain your "Masters" or "Originals" directory.

  • What went wrong with my iMovie 4 Photo Library?

I'm preparing a slideshow with narration & music on iMovie 4 to burn to DVD.
The Photo Library in my iMovie 4 has suddenly become disorganized so that with over 650 photos in it, I can't readily locate a photo. However, the albums remain organized. It's just iM4's Photo Library that is disorganized.
In iPhoto, the Photo Library is organized, as are the albums. I tried deleting the .plist file in Preferences, but that didn't work. It's a unique problem, I think, as it's never happened before over more than a year of working with iM4.
    Any advice/info?

Deduct those 10 points. iMovie 4 reverted back to a disorganized Photo Library & the routine I described, above, doesn't help. iPhoto's Library is still organized, as are the albums. The albums in iM4 are also still organized.
I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but I had to change the size of a photo because on a previous trial DVD, the image was seriously cropped on left & right when viewed on TV even tho the Constrain in iPhoto was set to DVD dimensions.
I accessed Photoshop, via iPhoto, & changed the image size to 640 pixels wide, letting height be what it may. I did a Save As, changing the format from .tif to .jpg. I saved it to the Desktop. From the Desktop, I dragged the file into iPhoto.
After adjusting the title info so that the photo would be in its proper place in iPhoto's Photo Library, I returned to iMovie 4, but iM4's Photo Library is once again, disorganized.
I think this is an iMovie, not an iPhoto problem. So, humbled, I again ask for your help. BTW, could I just work with the albums, since they contain everything in the Photo Library, but organized by time periods? I just wish I could get the Photo Library problem in iMovie 4 fixed.

  • Photo library and sync help

    1. I have a photo in my photo library on my iPhone will not let me delete. How can delete it?
    2. What is the best way to delete apps from the iPhone? I still see the apps that I did not sync. Why is this.

Having the same problem - except the photos are not in the iphoto '11 photo library.
They are under the photo library tab of my iphone - even organized by some strange date (Jan 1970) under the events tab - but when i got to iphoto - they're nowhere to be found... very frustrating.  Tried searching by date but they just don't seem to be there.
Stranger still - the photo count on my phone is the same as iphoto... they're there somewhere....

  • What is "Photo Library" in Photos application?

I think this happened since upgrading to iLife 09, but I'm not sure.
I used to have two albums in Photos: Camera Roll and iPod. The latter is an album in iPhoto and I have iTunes set to sync with just that album.
But now I have three albums in Photos: Camera Roll, iPod and Photo Library.
Photo Library's contents are exactly the same as iPod.
But where did it come from? There is no album in iPhoto called "Photo Library" or any album set to sync except for the album called iPod.
    Anybody have any idea?
    Thanks,
    doug

Not sure why "Photo Library" was not available on your iPhone previously, which was not normal.
This has nothing to do with which iLife or iPhoto version you are using, or if you have selected all photos in your iPhoto library to be transferred, or just one iPhoto album, or several iPhoto albums.
All photos transferred to your iPhone via the iTunes sync process are stored in your iPhone's Photo Library - regardless how many photos are selected to be transferred or the number of different folders or albums of photos are selected to be transferred.
I have a number of iPhoto albums selected to be transferred to my iPhone. All photos in all albums are stored in my iPhone's Photo Library. The photos in the albums below are not duplicated. The photos in the different albums include a link or pointer to the original photos stored in the iPhone's Photo Library. This way, you can view the photos in a particular album only by selecting the album, or all photos available in all albums by selecting Photo Library.
The filing structure for iPhoto, iTunes, and the Address Book on your Mac is the same.
You can't place a photo in an iPhoto album without the photo being available in your main iPhoto library, and a photo can be available in multiple iPhoto albums without being duplicated. Delete a photo from your iPhoto library that is available in an iPhoto album and the photo will no longer be available in the album either.
The filing structure for iTunes playlists and for Address Book Groups is the same.
There is nothing wrong with your iPhone now, but there was something wrong with it before if your iPhone didn't have a Photo Library, which is where all photos transferred from your computer are stored on your iPhone.

  • Can't open current photo library using this version of iPhoto... HELP

Is anybody out there that can hlep me. I have bee ntrying to import pictures of my canon but I keep getting this error message....
"you can't open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto. You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto."
Here is the thing... I have never imported pictures yet on this program. If I check for updates it tells me I am current on all updates. Any suggestions??
    Thanks

OK, first you need to create an iPhoto Library folder that's compatible with your version of iPhoto -- drag the existing iPhoto Library folder from your Pictures folder to the desktop. Launch iPhoto and choose "Create New..." from the dialog that's presented. Quit iPhoto when you see the new empty library view.
Next, you're going to plop the incompatible iPhoto Library into the newly created iPhoto Library folder. In a Finder view, drag the iPhoto Library folder that was moved to the desktop INTO the newly created iPhoto Library folder in your Pictures folder (you want to have your old iPhoto Library folder inside your newly-created iPhoto Library folder).
Finally, you're going to rebuild the library database. Start iPhoto while holding the option+shift keys. Don't release them until you're prompted to confirm the rebuild intent. Click "Yes", then click "Save".
After you've verified that iPhoto is again functional, you'll find two iPhoto Library folders in your Pictures folder. The rebuilt library will have a "_1" at the end of the folder's name. The other one (the 'Library within a Library") can be moved to the trash if the rebuild is satisfactory.
