IPhoto 4 picture sharing

My wife and I both have PowerBooks running OS 10.4. To this point, all of our digital pictures (1000+ images) are stored on my harddrive. We have backed up all the pictures on an external harddrive but are having trouble viewing the images on iPhoto when my wife uses her computer to view the pictures. Also, all the additional information that we have added under "comments" or "title" doesn't seem to stay with the images once they're saved onto the external harddrive.
Is there a way to "sync" photos with iPhoto and use an external drive as the primary storage site? How do we keep the extra information saved with the images?
Thanks

John,
1- you talk about your digit pics stored on an external drive. Well are they within an iPhoto library? (meaning when you backed up your library from internal, did you copy the entire IP library to the external??)
2- having a copy/backup on an external drive, will not make iphoto "share" with another computer unless iPhoto is up and running on your computer and you pointed IPhoto to that "external" iP library.
3- there's no reason (except to save space on your internal HD) to have iPhoto "run" an iP library backup on an external, that you already have on your internalHD.
(the reason to make a backup, usually, is to use that to revert to original (most recent) if your original IP library shoud crash or disapear)
4- you say "use an external drive as the primary storage site?" Not sure if I understand you question correctly. The question is not asked properly, because the answer is obvious. Sure you can use an external as a primary (but the word "storage" does not fit here). If the external becomes your primary, then it is not your backup anymore.
If iPhoto should crash while operating with the library on the external and the library becomes corrupted, then you do not have a backup on the external...., because the external will then have a damaged unusable library, with no other backup in sight to fall back on!!!
that being said,'
If you point your computer to an "external" ip library, and iPhoto is running on your computer, go to share tab in the iP preferences. Select 'look for shared photo' -for your computer to look a the other computer iP library, and select 'share my photos'- to allow other computer (your wife's) to find your iP library. Then if your 2 computers are networked, each library will show on the other computer when iPhoto 4 is launched on computer #2. and vice versa.
hope this answer your questions?
P.S. I strongly suggest to keep one iP library on your powerbook, have iP4 operate it. Then use the external to periodically/(or everytime you add photos to the internal library) do a backup on the external.
About the "extra information saved with the images?"
you say:
all the additional information that we have added under "comments" or "title" doesn't seem to stay with the images once they're saved onto the external harddrive.
the way to make a true backup to an externalHD, is to copy the entire iPlibrary containing all its subfolders (albumData.xml, Data, ...... Modified, Originals,..... Thumb32....) Iphoto needs theses folders to assign the proper "comments or title' to every photo. If you look into the iP library folders on your own, outside using iP interface, YOU WILL NOT see the title or comments. if you penetrate into these folders such as modified or originals. the photos still have their old name given by the camera. IPhoto needs all the items contained into Ip Library, and has to be accesssed through the iPhoto interface. So lauch iphoto4 on the 2 computers, make sure you are sharing in ip preferences. and that should be sufficient.

  • TS5174 We have iPhotos in a shared folder. When my partner tries to view some photos(not all) they flash open, then disappear. This doesn't happen when I log in and open them. Any ideas would be welcome. Thanks.

We have iPhotos in a shared folder so both my pertner and I can access the pictures.
Recently, when my partner tries to open some of the more recent pictures, they open briefly, then disappear. This doesn't happen with all of them, and there doesn't seem to be any link between those that do, and those that don't.
When I try to open them, they open with no problem, and remain open until I close them.
    Has anyone any solutions, please?
    Thanks.

A shared folder is not sufficient to share an iPhoto library. When you open the library from your account, the ownership and permissions of library items changes.
The safest way to share a library is to put it onto a separate disk or disk partition with the "Ignore Ownership on this volume" flag set. See this document on how to achieve this:

  • IPhoto 06 slideshow shared with iDVD 06

I have created a slideshow in iPhoto 06 and shared it with iDVD 06. I have shared the slideshow from iPhoto in 4:3 DVD TV and Widescreen to iDVD and saved as standard and widescreen. When I play the DVD in my DVD player it crops the pictures and titles (I have played on two different TV's and DVD players with the same result). What am I doing wrong?

  • I installed PS CS 6 and now all my iPhoto 11 pictures are missing.

I installed PS CS 6 last night and now all my iPhoto 11 pictures are missing from the library. I had 45,000 plus pictures and some of them were not backed up. I have tried holding the command and alt keys down while starting iPhoto several times but no luck. Does anyone have any idea how I can recover these photos?

Don't see how installing CS 6 could do this.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • I need to minimize the space photos take on my MacBook Pro OSx 10.7.  They are in iPhoto, Aperture, Pictures/Photo Library, etc.  Are they taking space in all of these locations?

I need to minimize the space photos take on my MacBook Pro OSx 10.7.  They are in iPhoto, Aperture, Pictures/Photo Library, etc.  Are they taking space in all of these locations?

Are they taking space in all of these locations?
It depends on how you are using iPhoto and Aperture.
iPhoto and Aperture each create their own library files, and the default location for them is in /users/youruseraccount/Pictures
You can configure iPhoto and Aperture to use the same Library file, in which case your photos are only stored once.  But if you are using iPhoto & Aperture with independent library files, you may in fact be duplicating your storage.
The second consideration is whether or not you have configured iPhoto and/or Aperture as reference libraries, in which case their library files only reference photos you have stored in other places on your hard drive.  Setting them up as reference libraries does not duplicate the photos inside the library files.

  • Macbook Pro iPhoto or Pictures?

Just bought a MacBook Pro, could someone please explain to me the difference between the iphoto and pictures? Should I upload my pics to both? Or should I use one rather than the other? Thanks in advance!!

iPhoto is an app that supports importing photos from a digital camera and is also a photo storage and management app. The iPhoto Library is stored in the OS X Pictures folder. If you mamage photos the good old Windows way - by manually creating folders, etc, you can store all your manually created folders of photos in the Pictures folder. Pictures is basically just a folder.

  • Lost iPhoto and pictures

Tonight opened iPhoto and was prompted to select a library. I chose the library I thought was the correct one (I only have two choices iPhoto or Pictures) and now when iPhoto opens I have all the thumbnails but when I click to open them all I get is a black screen with an "!" mark.
I have tried all the usual procedures such as opening with "Option & Cmd" buttons held and rebuilt
all #1,2, & 6, or only "option" held to choose new library all to no avail.
Furthermore, when I went back to my Pictures folder all I have is a folder which went clicked on opens iPhoto. If I right-click on this folder then I can see all my other contents. I have tried to select-all in the this folder to drag onto the Pictures folder but all I get is a pop-up saying it can't be opened because "Pictures" may be damaged or incomplete
Using a cmd line from a previous problem I was able to get my "Pictures" folder back to what it should be (after several goes during which it kept reverting back).
Can anyone offer some advice on how I can open up my photos please?

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • I tried moving an album from iPhoto to Pictures.  It took the entire iPhoto Library.  Now I can't use it, and I cannot open it.  How do I get it back to just iPhoto?

I tried moving an album from iPhoto to Pictures, but the entire iPhoto Library moved.
I now cannot open iPhoto.  How can I get it back?

A folder named Library popped up in Pictures.  I didn't want the entire Library, just the one album.
When I open the Library Folder in Pictures, I get sub folders dated with years.
When I open the subfolders, I just keep getting more folders.
This looks like you were viewing your iPhoto Library; the contents of the Masters folder. Is your original iPhoto library still there?
Where do you keep your iPhoto library? In the default location in your "Pictures" folder?

  • I lost all my photos in iphoto and picture project

I have a Mac OS X version 10.3.9, and the iphoto is version 4.0.3
i emptied my trash, and then went through the applications and deleted the ones i don't use (such as PDA and palm pilot applications and the games that i will never play). After i was done, i went back to iphoto and all the albums and pictures were gone. I went into picture project (a nikon software) and those pictures were gone, but had the little boxes of blank pictures. My desktop originally had a picture on it that i downloaded from a camera was gone as well. when i logged onto another account those pictures were still there. When i logged back onto my account, my desktop picture came back, leading me to believe that my pictures are still there. But those are gone too. Is there anyway i can retrive my pictures? I really hope they are not gone! I have too many pictures...and only half of them backed up! =(

i'm talking about the desktop trash. I don't know how to empty the iphoto trash.
No, i didn't delete anything with iphoto. i know i can delete duplicates, and still keep one of the pictures, i have done that before. I did delete Chess, Deimos Rising, Ambrosia Software Web, Kinoma, Palm, PDA Shop Lists, PDA Money, PDA Safe ID, Splash ID, Splash Money, Splash Shopper.
I logged under a different user name, and all those pictures were still in iphoto and picture project.
No, i did not contradict myself. The desk top picture did come back, leading me to believe that all the photos were still there. However, when i checked the iphoto and picture project, those were still gone.

I was working with iPhoto downloading pictures and it quit unexpectedly and i lost a bunch of pictures what do i do can they be recovered some where on my computer?? Please can someone help it took me 12 hours just today not counting yesterday between scanning & transferring with a flash drive then dating old family slides in my iphoto. I lost alot

I was working with iPhoto downloading pictures
Do you mean importing photos? If so what were you importing from? If it is a flash drive why not just re-import from it? Where did you scan them?
As to backups - you really need to always have your backup running - without good backups you will lose all photos sooner or later

  • Technology for instant messenger, file sharing and picture sharing

As part of project(for studies), our team is working on software which had features of instanst messenger, p2p file sharing and picture sharing and support for storing profiles, offline messages. Although we had some idea abt how to proceed.....but we need to know which java technology would be best suited for various aspects for efficiency....
    1. GUI
    2. Networking
    3. Security (which class is suited for authentication)
    4. File Sharing(which files support is provided)
    5. Picture sharing(and formats and size supported)
anything missing we need to consider.............
and we r useing JDBC...or shud achicives be better option

    1. GUISwing
    2. NetworkingPlain sockets.
(Most efficient NIO, but that's probably a bit tought for you if you are new to java)
    3. Security (which class is suited for
    authentication)Write custom classes for that.
    4. File Sharing(which files support is provided)You either need to write code for that (use sockets) or look for a 3rd pary networking library.
    5. Picture sharing(and formats and size supported)Same as above. There's no difference in sharing an image and an mpr3 song.
anything missing we need to consider.............
and we r useing JDBC...For what?

  • Can iPhoto books be shared for editing by others with iPhoto?

Working on a project with a client who would like to handle future edits of their photo book on their own. Can iPhoto books be shared for editing by others with iPhoto?

How do I share the library and book with them?
Copy the library to a thumbs drive and give them the thumbs drive.
The drive needs to be formatted MAcOS Extended (Journaled), with the Ignore Ownership flag enabled.
See this link:  iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users
The clients will need to use the same iPhoto version as you are using.
