IPhoto 5.0.4 has just destroyed 5 hours of work!

Dear all,
my girlfriend had just been using iPhoto 5.0.4 (latest version) for 5 hours on our brand new iMac G5, creating a nice book that was supposed to be ordered as printout, when the application suddenly decided to crash.
The catastrophe came clear when we restarted iPhoto: All work was gone, the book was back at its initial state as 5 hours ago.
Even worse: Since iPhoto doesn't provide an explizit way to "save" the work (which accordingly we assumed it would do by itself in the background), everything was now gone. iPhoto quite obviously hadn't saved anything and didn't even realise it had crashed, let alone try to restore the data (as most Microsoft applications do after crashes)! We searched through the filesystem with Finder but couldn't find anything that looked like a simple ".bak file". Isn't that the LEAST you could expect from an application like iPhoto???
Therefore I kindly ask you to let us know if there is ANY way to restore the lost data. MacOS is using a "journaled" filesystem. How can the filesystem be accessed. Where and how does iPhoto store the data for books at all?
I am hoping to get a quick answer since if there is no way to restore the data, I will return the computer to the dealer I bought it from. We still are in the money back period. A simple Windows based freeware to organize our pictures will crash, too - but cost much less than an iMac.
Thanks for your quick help in advance!
Kind regards
Christian Krenner

I have immediately tried Command-D and it works great. Strangely enough, it cannot be done through the menus.
Command D is listed in the Help file list of available commands. Although listed by the iPhoto Help as Duplicate a Photo, in many situations in other applications, Command D means duplicate whatever is highlighted. You will often find there are far more shorcut keys than are listed in the menus (plus you can set your own).
Anyone here from Apple who can confirm this hidden switch? Why is this VERY USEFUL option hidden and not accessible from the user interface?
Apple seem to have a very different view of how applications should work. It is in some ways rather like some phone operating system, which seems to extend it to the point where you can neither save nor even close applications. Apple deliberately hide complexity from the new user. They don't stop you using it, but they certainly do not make it obvious that you have a potential preference available.
I moved from Windows 20 months ago, and I still find new things about my Macintosh that surprise and often delight me.
Of course, if I'd just lost 5 hours work, I would also be infuriated. The reports I have seen make me think the changes Apple made to iPhoto 5 have NOT been as bug free as I would normally expect from what is nominally an older application. However it feels to me as if Apple are still feeling their way with iPhoto. It had major changes in how it handles information between versions 2, 4 and 5 (I don't think they had a 3). With Spotlight Smart Folders able to do more and better searches of photos than iPhoto can manage, it seems to me iPhoto is in one of those transition areas to a different way of handling photos. Plus it seems likely Apple's photo experts were working on their new pro photo application that was recently released.
The files iPhoto uses for Book information is in each iPhoto Library. Book printing is not available here, so I have no real hints on it, but one obvious trick with any program is simply to close it from time to time if you are not yet sure it is stable. You could then check the file times in iPhoto Library to see which ones iPhoto uses. You might later on like to make a script to save a series of breakpoints of your projects. I also like the idea of running a separate iPhoto Library for each project I am working on. Just hold down the Option key while you start iPhoto for a choice of Library.
Good luck with your computing, whichever way you decide to go.

What version of iphoto? Assuming 09 or later...
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.

  • My iPhoto app has just vanished along with 23,000 photos how do I recover it?

My iPhoto App has just vanished along with 23,000 photos how can I recover i Photo?

If the iPhoto app is still in the applications folder it's possible the library just needs to be rebuilt. Use Apple's instructions in:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2638
If iPhoto is no longer in the Applicaitons folder let us know.

Hi, I was importing pictures into iPhoto from my sd card and suddenly iPhoto quit.  Now it just won't open.  When I click on the iphoto icon in the dock, nothing happens!  Does anyone have a solution to this problem please?

As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?
If it does then your current library has been damaged and should be repaired: apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start
with Option #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • IPhoto 9.1 Update has damaged code signature

I just reloaded the 9.1 update for iPhoto, and it still has a damaged code signature (sealed code resource is missing).
This will continue to create warnings, when the Firewall is turned on.

As the original poster of this question, I want to note that my problem remains the same. As a very old hand at working with Macs I can point out that of course I tried the installation in Safe Mode for both the OS and my Admin account. NO CHANGE. It's a bad installer.
All my experience with this unique problem tells me it is an APPLE error that requires APPLE attention.
I am deeply troubled to see people replying to this issue having to jump through flaming hoops of annoying nonsense in order to get the update to work. How incredibly MICROSOFT. *SHUDDER*
    Wake up Apple!
Taking a cue from the Microsoft PITA nature of this updater, I'm going to pull the usual routine one is forced to do on a screwy Microsoft installation and delete the whole show and start from scratch. If this PITA procedure works, I will provide another post.
I will also be calling Apple directly, bashing my way up to 3rd level experts, to have them sort this out. If they have a solution, I will post.
If all fails, I'll let the issue remain open and unanswered.
Apple: I am NOT amused. Fix your uniquely lousy iPhoto v9.1 installer!

  • My ipad 2 is a few months old now and has just had its first glitch, it will sync ok as long as I have no photo sync selected, as soon as I select to sync any photos off my imac it mentions that no sync is possible because a file is missing? What file?

ipad 2, it says version 4.3.5, has just had its first glitch. It will not sync iphoto but everything else sync's ok.  I did restore to factory settings because it came up with (error -50) now it mentions a file is missing, but no longer mentions (error -50). This is the first problem I have had.

If the cache isn't the issue, click 50 on this page >  iOS: Resolving update and restore alert messages

  • LR CC has just been installed but when I click on the desktop icon nothing happens, what can I try?

LR CC has just been installed but when I click on the desktop icon nothing happens, what can I try?

    Probably is
You need a minimum of 10GB of free space for normal operations
You need to address that first - the best soution may be to get an external drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag your iPhoto library to it - depress the option key and launch iPhoto and point to that library
Hopefully that will let you get started - there may be additional repairs needed

  • My form has been destroyed how do i get the information back

my form has been destroyed how can i get the information back?

When you say that your form was destroyed does this mean you no longer see your form in the myforms tab or that the data submitted to the form is missing. If it is missing submissions are they all gone or just some. Any additional information about your for and your submissions would be helpful in figuring out what has happened.

    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

I've had MS Office:mac 2011 on my imac for around 18 months now.  Outlook has just disappeared and when I find the file and open it it tells me that there is a problem and I may need to re-install it.  I've just done this using the installation disc which, then said the installation had been successful.
Outlook is still not working.  Can anyone please advise me on what to do next.

Remove MS Office 2011 completely (here are instructions) and reinstall it.
It's not a simple or fast process but it is important to follow all of the steps in order to get all the files that Office scatters around. This will not affect your data files, only MS Office and its preferences.

  • My iphone 4S wont allow me to restore a bckup of icloud it has just rebooted the os and for over 24 hours i have been trying to fix it i use this phone for my job so i need help

    - Connect the iPod to the computer and see if iTunes sees it. If it sees it try to get the photos off the iPod.
    - Next let the battery fully drain. It will likely take days. After charging for at least an hour try again
    - Last, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

Firefox crashes when I try to watch a movie type youtube, has just installed nero and Nikon software on my computer. This began shortly after I installed my new CD burner with Nero 9 burning software, about the same time I also installlerade my new Nikon camera software ViewNX2, I ran Avira scan and Microsoft Egan virus scan and they say everything is good in it, he reported a few times, I ran Avira scan of your computer and Microsoft's own Virus Scanning and they say everything is good in it, he reported a few times, tried again now and the sound is heard all the way but the image is still, therefore gentle freezes, got no number on the bug report so I can not say that. Also ask your pardon for errors in language that may be present but hope you understand anyway!
