IPhoto 5.0.4 Under 10.4.2 Frequenly Hangs

Hi, everyone --
Ever since upgrading my PowerBook G4 to Mac OS 10.4, iPhoto 5 frequently stops responding for no apparent reason. It started immediately after upgrading to Mac OS 10.4 and not after loading a certain photo or roll of photos. I would say it occurs during four out of five iPhoto sessions.
The symptom is that the "spinning beach ball" appears and then never disappears. The only way I know to recover from this is to force quit iPhoto.
By the way, I never experienced this issue using iPhoto 5 under Mac OS 10.3 and have no issues in any other applications on my computer.
The problem has persisted through each point release update to both iPhoto 5 and Mac OS 10.4. I am currently up-to-date with the most recent point releases -- including the 5.0.4 update -- on both.
I've tried to notice if I'm doing something specific when it happens, but it's completely unpredictable. I have tried repairing disk permissions and rebuilding the iPhoto library by holding down Command + Option during launch -- a couple of times, in fact. If there is a more "radical" way of rebuilding the iPhoto library without losing my albums, keywords, titles, and comments I would be open to trying it.

Old Toad, my iMac has 40 GB of free space. I use it to run a slideshow while I'm at work. I do so little else on it that it is pathetic. I sincerely doubt that it is a cache problem. I will be glad to give that a whirl, but it's likely to be after Thanksgiving before I get an opportunity to do so.
As to my other two other iPhoto crippled G4s, I have done all the Onyx, cache cleaning, plist dumping, fsck start, and library rebuilding recommendations over and over. These are not making it work. I keep doing them because I hope I hit the magic bullet one of these days.
All other programs and functions are working on all of my computers. It is only iPhoto that has crapped out on me. The fact that iPhoto was working fine on my iMac right up until I imported the library from my ex. hard drive and that I have all that empty disc space on its hard drive makes it hard to believe it's a problem with the computer. I'm open to the idea that there are corrupted files, but the tower and the Powerbook have a different set of photos on them. Where is the mini program or feature in iPhoto to identify corrupted files?

  • IPhoto 7.1.1 Under Leopard 10.5.1 Will not print photo under "save as PDF"

    iPhoto 7.1.1 Under Leopard 10.5.1.
Select a photo, choose "print" icon at bottom of iPhoto window.
    Choose "print".
    Choose "Save as PDF".
Result: Unknown error message appears with white space (no text) in message box, but with "OK" button.
    Hit "OK button".
RESULT: iPhoto prints a screen shot of the iPhoto window and renders it to a PDF file.
In other words, *the print function under iPhoto does not work*. It yields an error every time that does not have a message, then *instead of printing the selected photo, takes a PDF screen shot of the iPhoto window*.
This is an example of poor programming. And of course, there is no way to fix it, or to get help.
Is anyone else having this problem?

This is an example of poor programming.
How do you come to this conclusion. It's working fine for me. You're the first to report such an issue.
First repair disk permissions with Disk Utility and delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder. A corrupted pref file can cause all sorts of unusual performance problems. If that doesn't help, log into another account and try from there. If it still doesn't work a reinstall of iPhoto seems warranted. To reinstall iPhoto you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder.
    It iPhoto performs correctly in the other account then your primary account is the culprit and may be a preference file other than iPhoto's that's at fault. To determine if that's the case try the following;
    Trouble Shooting Preferences
Go to HD/Users/Your_name/Library. Move the Preferences folder (in its entirety) to the Desktop and make a second copy of it so you have Copy A and B. Now try the the process again and determine if problem is fixed.
If the problem IS fixed, then go to the new Prefs folder that the OS will have created and open it up.
Open Copy B on the Desktop and select all of the items inside. Drag them into the open new library folder. When the Copy window comes up check the Apply to All check box and then click on the Don't Replace button as seen here. That will keep the new files created and bring back all of the others.
If the problem is NOT fixed, trash the new Prefs folder and move the intact Copy A folder back to the Library folder .
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • How to remove black "blocked plug-in" window that opens with iPhoto and covers everything under it?

How to remove black "blocked plug-in" window that opens with iPhoto. It covers iPhoto and everything under it. I've right and left clicked the black window, restarting the computer, shutting down the computer, but the window always appears when I open iPhoto and it will not move or go away. It stays on my screen (covering my desktop icons) even after I quit iPhoto. How can I get it off my screen?

Which version if iPhoto and MacOS X do you have?
Do you have any iPhoto plug-ins  installed?
    Open the folder /Library/Application Support/iPhoto/Plugins/
To navigate to that folder, open the folder "Library" directly on your Macintosh HD, then inside the Library folder go to Application Support, then iPhoto.  Is there anything installed?

  • Iphoto 9.4.2 under Mavericks

Apple elected to remove a number of print formating options under iPhoto 9.5.1, the version included in the Mavericks release.  I have one MacBook that I have not upgraded to Mavericks.  Can I simply copy the full featured iPhoto 9.4.2 to my Mavericks iMac?

First I'd update the the 9.4.2 app to 9.4.3 before copying to the iMac. Rename the    9.5.1 app to iPhoto 9.5.1.app and then bring over the 9.4.3 app into the Applications folder.
Next you'll have to downgrade the library on the iMac to iPhoto 9.4.3 as described in the iPhoto Library Manager tutorial: Fat Cat Software - iPhoto Library Manager Help - Downgrading a library to an earlier version of iPhoto

  • IPhoto is gone - Running under iLife 05

Went in to send some photos up to my .mac website and discovered that iPhoto was gone. Not found in Finder under applications or on the HD.
Pulled out my CDs that came with my iMac G5. No sign of iLife 05.
How do I get iPhoto back?!?
I did see a post about running the disk utility which I did. No success.

and discovered that iPhoto was gone.<<<</div>
That just doesn't happen by itself. Someone trashed it and emptied the trash.

If your Mac came with iLife-5, the loader should be there but it might not be obvious. You might wish to Google for a utility called "Pacifist." It will help you extract individual loaders from system load CDs.

  • Printing problem with iPhoto 9.5.1 under Mavericks 10.9.3

When trying to print even a single photo from iPhoto, the printer hangs after competing about 10% of the job.
The printer is an HP Deskjet F4580. It still works fine from other apps.

    The printer.
iPhoto is still active and I can do other things with it. The job has been sent tothe printer so I guess it's the printer where the problme lies, or the communication between the Mac and the printer (which is wireless, though that shouldn't make a difference).

  • Can't either enter or insert text in a book in iPhoto v9.4.2 under 10.8.2!

I have several books that I successfully produced (a year or more ago), obviously using earlier versionsof iPhoto. I set out to produce a new book this morning. No problem with importing and ordering the images, but I found that I could not enter text into the text boxes on the book pages. As a check I went to my earlier books and found that I can no longer get into the text boxes to edit already established text... when I double click in the text box there is a quick flash of the text cursor, but then it disappears. Any ideas, please, folks?

First make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

  • How to use iPhoto in screen saver under maverick os

With the Lion or Leopard O/S i am able to use my pictures directly from  iPhoto as screensavers.  However after upgrade to Maverick, it is now impossible to select iPhoto events as a source for any of the screensavers!
    any ideas, please help!

I too am having the same issue.  I have a circa 2007 iMac, and recently upgraded to OS 10.9.1.  I also moved all of my photos to an external hard drive (currently have iPhoto 9).  When I try to set to set up the computer screensaver, the iphoto library on the external drive is greyed out.
I may upgrade to iPhoto 11 if that it requirement, but if there is an easier solution, I will go for that.
    Thanks for any feedback!!

  • Video Still Glitches in iPhoto 6.0.1 under 10.4.5

In iPhoto editing mode, selecting a portion of the picture like you are going to crop it often results in the video briefly glitching the whole picture. The easiest way to reproduce this is by grabbing somewhere near the upper left of your picture and dragging off the bottom right of it going over the zoom slider before letting go of the mouse button. This is the normal way I would go about cropping a picture many times that causes the video glitch. I would imagine this is a 256 VRAM issue again, but let's hear it. Thanks.

I have a dvd project that has more than 60 minutes of
video in it, and iDVD wants to switch to 90 minute
mode, but when I click on the 90 minute button or 60
minute button when the window pops up, nothing
happens, and I have to end up killing the process.
This used to work, whats going on?
.. could be because you have updated to QuickTime 7.x
iDVD came out in the days of OS 10.2.2 and QT 6.x - I'm not at all surprised it isn't working well with 10.4.6 and QT 7.x

  • After long term excellent performance iPhoto 09 now sits under the bottom of my screen and will not open and interact in the usual way ... Whats up?

When I hold my mouse on the icon the iPhoto 09 program opens on the desktop, but does not permit the usual interaction...when I try to click on the program it disappears again at the bottom of my screen.  Please help,  Thanks in advance, Charles

Sorry but I don't really follow your description of the issue. Some basic fixes:
Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.
    If that doesn't work:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .
    Regards
    TD

  • Iphoto compatibility with Outlook under Mountain Lion

Since upgrading to Mountain Lion, I can't send pictures from Iphoto though Outlook.  Anyone know the solution or if Apple will fix this?

Thanks, but I am already aware of that setting.  The problem is that when you click to send the pictures, Outlook is called up from the dock, but then nothing happens.  There is no connection that prepares an outgoing mail.  I have started using Apple's Mail program, but am wondering if someone knows of how to get this same functionality in Outlook.
    Thanks,

  • IPhoto does not work under Yosemite

I just installed Yosemite and iPhoto does not seem to be working. It says that I have to update iPhoto and that I can search for the newest version in the app store, however, once I try to update and enter my Apple ID and password, nothing happens?

and that I can search for the newest version in the app store, however, once I try to update and enter my Apple ID and password, nothing happens?
Which version of iPhoto do you have?
If your version of iPhoto is not an iPhoto '11 version but iPhoto `09 or earlier, you cannot update iPhoto but need to buy the upgrade.
In that case   go straight for the "Featured" tab of the App Store, enter iPhoto into the search field and buy iPhoto 9.6.

  • IPhoto does not run under lion OS

I have a 27" iMac purchased in 2010.  The hard drive recently went bad but Apple support was able to save my data and replaced the hard drive.
I just upgraded the OS to Lion 10.7.  Now my iPhoto will not run.  Get the error message "Lion does not support PowerPC applications."
What should I do.  I do not want to purchase iPhoto 2011.  I have Photoshop Elements 9.  Should I just move my photos over to Elements or can I download a free version of iPhoto?  I like the simplicity of iPhoto for presentation and small changes.

I think you need an upgrade. If you have a PPC version of iPhoto it must be several years old.  You needt to upgrade to the current version. You can purchase iPhoto by itself from the App Store for $20.00.

  • IPhoto and iMovie registered under separate Apple ID prohibits updates... HELP!

I bought this 2012 Macbook pro from a guy on Craigslist. It works great and we had all of the applications and such changed to my Apple ID at an Apple Store upon purchase. The only thing is, 2 of the programs, iPhoto and iMovie show up as available updates, but when I ry to update, they say that they are registered to another Apple ID and thus I can't update. Is this fixable? Note-I have no further contact with the man who I bought the computer from.

They might make an exception for you although the licensing requirements are that any app obtained from the app store as well as any originally installed app which had been accepted by the original owner are not transferable. Any subsequent owner will need to purchase them using their own Apple ID.

  • IPhoto 9.5.1 and Mavericks extremely slow and hangs

I upgraded to Mavericks and bought iPhoto 9.5.1 upgrade from the app store. Now, iPhoto is extremely slow in loading thumbnails. Once it loads a page or two, then it is fast to scroll the thumbnails it has already loaded, but as you go further back in time, it needs to load all the thumbnails. It eventually hangs. When I reboot the application, it doesn't remember the previous thumbnails and is again extremely slow. This version is way to slow to use and is actually unusable. It also doesn't show any faces in the face collection frames, and when you click on them, it opens up blank outlines, then when you click on these, it brings up the original photo with all the faces named. So the faces feature has major issues as well.
I never had any problem with the previous version of iPhoto. I am using a mid-2010 macbook pro with 8 g of ram. Anyone else have this problem and is Apple aware of the problems with this version?
    Thanks.

Where is your iPhoto Library stored? Have you tried rebuilding the Library?
