Iphoto 5 cannot add photos to library

hi,
most of the photos that i have on my computer are not showing up in iphoto. they're all in the correct folders (iphoto library with automatic date subfolders), and iphoto used to display them. i have tried several times to re-add the images to the library, but every time i get an error message:
Unreadable Files: 1 [or # of photos i'm trying to add]
the following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data).
these are just standard jpegs (and a few movies taken with a digital camera), and they work fine when opened in preview or photoshop. not that i have much use for iphoto anyway, but it would be nice to be able to use it once in a while.
i recently bought a new digital camera, but i doubt that this is the issue - both the old and new cameras are canons and work fine. any ideas?
thanks,
adam

Sounds likr you may have a corrupted databae. Have a read of this article for help in recovering the situation:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107947
iPhoto will not import pics that are in the iPhoto Library Folder - a sensible precaution against duplication.

When I go to add to librabry and select the itunes folder with all the music nothing happens. Even if i try one song folder at a time nothing happens. • Cannot add photos to iphoto.

We have 3 users on our mac.  We've all been able to load photos to a commonly shared library for years.  But right now, for some reason, only my account can add photos.  It would appear that permissions have been restricted, but I can't figure out where.  Suggestions?

Before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. With information, s/he may be able to get your issue resolved sooner.

  • Iphoto cannot see my old library or photo files

in fact even finder can't see the jpegs but the old library icon shows 90GBs of content. If I look inside this using "show package content" i can see all the various iphoto folders and all the jpegs thumbnails etc. Really wierd. I've done a disk utility repair and removed and re installed iphoto but iphoto just opens a new library with no photos in. if i use "switch library" and select the library with 90GBs of potos it still just opens a new empty library. Any one got any ideas?

    - quit iPhoto
    - hold down your "control" key on your keyboard, and you should see a list of iPhoto Libraries, your computer sees.  Ensure you are connecting to the correct Library.  It's path is displayed under the box.  The one that displays as "default" is the one you are currently connected to.
If you are connected to the correct library, yet still have this issue, likely we have a corrupt iPhoto Library.  We can attempt to fix this with iPhoto's First Aid.
    - quit iPhoto
    - hold down your "option + command" keys on the keyboard, and keep them held down while launching iPhoto.  This should launch iPhoto with a "first aid" screen over top of it.   Do each of these first aid steps, one at a time, until you have completed all the steps.
Let us know how that works

  • Cannot Add MP4 to Library

    iTunes 7.5
    Vista build 6.00.6000

this is just a suggestion. If you reinstall itunes again, make sure you follow the directions in the support section of this site for uninstalling itunes and quicktime. Another thing they don't say in that article that I did when i had to uninstall itunes was to do a search. You know, pressing the start button and then "Search". Make sure when you do, click the search "All files and folders". Then set it to look in "Local Hard Drives (C:)" and type in the "all or part of the file name" itunes. After the search is done you should have a bunch of different itunes components in the results. Btw do the same for quicktime as a search. Make sure to DELETE every itunes and quicktime file there. If some of your music files happened to come up in the search use commone sense. Get rid of every component so itunes and quicktime is completely erased from the system. Make sure that you do this after you've restarted your computer once (according to the uninstallation article). Then just empty your recycle bin, reboot your computer, and finally reinstall itunes. Hopefully that will work to at least get rid of that APP error. Good luck and ask me anything you have some questions!!

  • HT1386 i have followed your instructions and still i cannot add my itunes library from laptop to iphone

I have gone over these instructions numerous times and I still cannot add music from itunes library on my laptop to my iphone. What am I doing wrong?

Is it on a NTFS drive?
Mac can read but not write to NTFS, and it does not see all NTFS drives equally well.
To write to NTFS I use and recommend Paragon Software $20 NTFS for Mac OS X.
Ideally move iTunes to a Mac HFSX format drive though.

  • Cannot add folder to Library

    HP6120 Windows XP Pro
I used Winamp and have a Library of a view thausends songs. A view days ago I installed iTunes because I planned to buy an Ipod 80GB.
I used the add folder to Library function and added the My Music folder to the library. Everything went well, but I noticed, that the number of songs was essentially lower than expected, because my ogg files were not taken into the library.
Therefore transformed the ogg-files to mp3-files.
I deleted all songs in my iTunes-library and tried to add the My Music Folder again to the library but now it stopps after a view songs with an error. The last song and the following songs are songs which have been accepted by the first run. (By the way - Winamp accepted all transformed files without any problems)
To solve the Problem I uninstalled and installed iTunes 7.018 a view times. I deleted the library folder. Restarted the computer again and again but the result was allways the same and the described failure came up.
I do really not know, how to solve the problem. I am not shure whether I will buy the Ipod as long as iTunes will not run properly. In the forum was the same failure described which came up after deleting of songs from the library.

FYI, I can work around this issue by browsing to any folder on another drive, "adding" it (even if it contains no music), then browsing the drive that has my music on it. I don't consider this a solution, but at least I can add my tunes now.

  • Cannot add photos from my own MobileMe gallery to my library

Computer A and Computer B are both linked to the same MobileMe account and both have iPhoto '08. I published a set of photos to a new MobileMe gallery using Computer A. I can view the gallery on Computer B, but I can't edit the photos on Computer B or add the photos to my library on Computer B. The edit buttons are grayed out.
I can use Computer B to create a new album from the photos in the MobileMe gallery, but they still cannot be edited and they don't actually appear in the library.
Does anyone know of a way to get the photos into my library on Computer B short of downloading each photo individually to Computer B and then importing in the Computer B library?

To get the photos on to B you'll need to subscribe to the gallery and download. However, you can only edit those published files on the computer that created the gallery.
If the two computers are linked together via a hard wired LAN you can have B log into A and use the library there. Or put the library on a external HD connected to A and let B access it there.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • IPhoto cannot link to iTunes Library

    Greetings,
I am trying to add music from my iTunes library into my iPhoto slideshow. The only thing I get is a message saying "open iTunes 6 or later to populate this list". I have tried opening iTunes first then iPhoto as well as the reverse. To no avail. Both applications function normally. I am not sure, but I have been having problems getting photos to sync with my iPod for some reason. iPhoto 8.1 iTunes 8.2.1.

The issue had something to do with user preferences. I tested the problem under a different user account and had no problems. I had already tried pulling out the preferences for iPhoto and iTunes without success. So I simply pulled all the preferences and logged out. After logging back in the problem did eliminate itself, but I had the daunting task of determining which preference was the offending one. I restored the old preferences in groups and eliminated ones that I knew belonged to software that I no longer use. Everything still works fine, and I only need to repopulate my dock since I cannot overwrite those preferences. I did not pin down the exact offending preference, perhaps it was one of those that I eliminated.

  • IPhoto cannot find photo to open

I have imported hundreds of photos into iPhoto. After installing 10.5 (upgrade method), many of the pictures I had imported previously will not export nor attempt to open when I drag to PSE 4.0. The message "cannot locate the photo" appears. I have no idea where it is in order to locate it. My "library" icon is gray....

    Should I reinstall iPhoto?
I don't see what that would achieve. The issue with "where are the pics?" and as such, is with your library rather than with iPhoto.
Go to your Pictures Folder and right click on the iPhoto Library Icon. Choose 'Show Package Contents' and a finder window will open showing the contents of the library.
Your pics should be inside the Originals Folder, in the individual Events folders. Can you see them?
