IPhoto 5 deleted my albums!

I started iPhoto 5 for the first time today. Previously, I had all my pictures organized under a folder called "Albums," under the usual "pictures" folder. iPhoto 5 asked me if I wanted to transfer the albums to iPhoto 5, and I said yes. However, only some of the albums were transferred. Other albums that I had created and placed in my albums folder without using iPhoto disappeared completely. Not only do they not show up in iPhoto, but they are also no longer on my hard drive. The entire folder is gone. What more, my organization is completely gone; I had all my folders organized by date and subject, and instead of bringing the pictures in the way I had them organized (ie, if I had a folder called "Christmas 1999," bringing that in as an album called "Christmas 1999"), it brought the pictures in by when they were added into the computer. So now I am VERY VERY irritated at having lost not only my organization, but hundreds of pictures! What the heck is wrong with iPhoto 5?

Hi Liane,
You never used iPhoto before?
The Albums folder you made yourself in the finder?
When did iPhoto ask you to transfer the Albums? I have never heard of that before.
If you had an earlier version of iPhoto and upgrade to version 5, when you open it for the first time it will ask to upgrade your library. Is that what you meant?
The albums you placed yourself in the Albums folder will not import when the library is upgraded. You have to import them into iPhoto yourself.
since am still not sure what you are talking about and instead you mean you imported your whole Albums folder with albums you did yourself and not with iPhoto read the following:
Importing Images from the hard drive, CD, or DVD
To import a folder with subfolders of images maintaining the same organizational structure (or close to it):
Drag the folder into iPhotos viewing area.
A film roll will be created with each sub folders name. To view the rolls in the Library you need to first go to the menu bar and choose View>by film rolls.
To make each roll into an Album, highlight the tile of the roll
Go to File>new album from selection.
You will now have an Album in the source column with the images from that roll. Do this for each roll if you want them to be an Album. This is your choice.
Next, go to the menu bar and hit File>new folder
Name this new folder with the year or whatever the name was of the Parent folder containing the subfolders that you had dragged into iPhotos viewing area.
Next drag all the Albums into the respective new Parent folder you just made.
Albums- collection of images from one roll or many rolls. The Albums will be listed in your source column when you make them. The albums only contain placeholders for the images that are still in the library. They are not duplicates.
Rolls- rolls are created when you import folder of images. It will be given the name of the folder you are importing.
Rolls are also created from each import from your camera. You are given the option to name the roll at import.
Folder-a folder you create manually using the File>new folder command
Folders can hold Albums, slideshows, books, another folder, etc.
One other way you can import a folder of images and have an Album created for it as the same time it is imported as a roll in the Library view:
Drag each folder of images into the source column of iPhoto. When you see the plus sign, drop it in the source column.
An album will be created in the source column, and the roll that the album was created from will be in the library view window.
Further more, the organization of the iPhoto Library in the Finder is different than how it is within iPhoto where you do your own organization creating albums, folders, etc.
This is a view of how the iPhoto Library looks in the Finder.
It is organized by Year folders. Inside the Year folders are Month folders. Inside the Month folders are the days of the Month. Inside the day folders are the photos you took on that day. If you imported video clips and RAW files on that day they will be in an Originals folder. If you have edited any photo imported on that day, the original will be in that folder also.
If you can clarify more if you were using iPhoto before, if the albums folder you were taking about was in the Finder in the iPhoto Library folder or in the Pictures folder, etc.
If the album folder you were taking about was in the iPhoto Library folder, then that folder just had aliases to the images that were in the albums in iPhoto 4 and that album folder is no longer used by iPhoto and is usually deleted on an upgrade or rebuild of the iPhoto Library.
Hope this helps!
Lori

  • IPhoto '11 Deletes All Albums, Events And Photos From iPad after Sync

In addition to many of the other issues mentioned on this thread, today I synced my iPad for the first time since upgrading to iPhoto '11. After syncing, all the photos, events and albums except for "Imported Photos" were deleted.
In iTunes, the iPad is set to sync albums and events from the last 12 months.
iPhoto '11 has been a horror show for me. I use iPhoto daily and am currently in the process of downgrading via Time Machine.
I understand that as a professional photographer I should be using Aperture or Lightroom, but I've just always felt comfortable with iPhoto.

I really wish I hadn't jumped on this the first day. I need to wait a little bit and read the forums. Had I done this, I would've done a complete clone of my photo library prior to this. now I've lost a few months worth of photos, which *****. And there are people in a lot worse situations than I. Lesson learned.

  • IPhoto Keeps Deleting My Albums - For Ex: Facebook Share Feature

I am absolutely furious with iPhoto 11. It has been non-stop trouble since I got it. There have been multiple times where I have lost the majority of my library simply because it needed to "upgrade library" or "repair library" or "update thumbnails." But through studying all the other threads on those issues I was able to get by with the program and after much work repair my library and what not. Until yesterday.
After gathering the photos from many different events and completely editing all of them, I clicked on the share menu and clicked on Facebook. It took forever, and I thought something might be wrong when at first it only uploaded 1 photo out of the 100.  Next thing I know my iPhoto crashes, and I pull it back up and the album I had been working on for so long was wiped of all its contents.  The album name is still on the side of my iPhoto, but there is nothing in it. Also, 9 of my 18 iPhoto albums were completely wiped clean as well. So I've lost all the edits/selecting of photos I've done for each of those albums as well. Then, I clicked on my Facebook tab in iPhoto and received this message:
If you know anything about these issues, or any possible way that I could get my full albums back or at least find the edited pictures (in finder or something) becasue in iPhoto even in the Photos tab, all the edits are gone. Thank you very much.

Best method is to restore your backup copy of the library from just before this occurred. You do have a backup, right?
FWIW iPhoto has been having problems with FB.  The workaround that most have found to be successful is to export the photo to a folder on the Desktop and upload to FB with your browser.
Some users haver reported that upgrading to 10.8.3 has fixed it for them.

  • Why when I delete photos from iPhoto it deletes them from Flickr?

I find it unbelievably inconvenient. Can you help me to avoid it somehow, please?
I wanted to uploas all my photos to Flickr account and delete most of them from my MacBook, because I need some place for storage... But, I found out that my great plan has failed=(

The purpose of this article is to provide steps to delete pictures from iPhoto without changing the synced album in Flickr.
    1. Exit iPhoto and login to Flickr
    2. Change your Flickr password
Click on Settings - Password: Type a new Flickr password and click "Change Password" - make note of the changed password to avoid banging your head on the table later!
    3. Open iPhoto
    4. Click on a synced iPhoto/Flickr album
The following message window will appear:
"An error occurred with the publication of album "(NAME OF SYNCED ALBUM."
"Authentication with server failed. Please check your login and password information."
    5. Delete the album on iPhoto.
Delete the album, or albums of choice in iPhoto! Since iPhoto cannot sync to Facebook, your Facebook album will stay intact.
    6. Change your Password on Flickr
Either change password back to your previous one or keep the new password. This is up to you.
    7. Re-sync iPhoto with Flickr
iPhoto will not re-sync even if you change your Flickr password back to the previous password. You will need to re-sync.
The fastest way is to do this is to select one picture from your iPhoto library and click the Flickr icon like you would do to add photos to Facebook.
Choose whom you want the photos viewable by then click on the "Change Accounts" button.
Fill out the appropriate fields with your user email, your current Facebook password, and that picture will now sync with Flickr as a new album. Do whatever you want with this album in iPhoto (delete or keep).
All your current iPhoto albums are now re-synced with Flcikr! The deleted album is gone and will not sync which keeps the Flcikr album completely intact!
This is one workaround - there might be others. Again, until Apple solves this issue, this workaround works quite easily despite the tedious steps.

  • How to delete pix/albums in iPhoto for iOS.?

I created two Journals in iPhoto for iOS.
When uploading to the iCloud I constantly run into "Storage almost full" problems. I have already deleted many apps to create space, but iPhoto seems to consistently grow in size (iPad > Settings>General> Usage: 6.8GB for iPhoto), worse yet, when publishing the Journals which are on the iPad it seems that additional space is needed for the publishing process.
I did NOT find a way to delete either Pictures or Albums in the iPhoto for iOS app, nor do I find a way to delete Photos and Camera in Settings, nor (individual or a range of) Photos or Albums in the Photos app. In the Photos tab of the Photos app there is a red Delete button, but this is greyed out; in the Albums tab this Delete button does not appear at all.
Any advice/suggestion/pointer would be highly appreciated. Thanks and cheers from Austria.

    See this:
iPhoto for iOS (iPad): Delete photos from iPhoto
Basically, you have to delete the photos the same way you got them onto the iPad in the first place.
In the Photos.app, you should be able to delete photos in the camera roll and in the events that have been uploaded using the camera connection kit, but no other.
Any synced photo can only be deleted by syncing again.
For Photos that have been edited, you need to undo all edits, before you can delete them, otherwise the delete button will not be active.
Albums created by tagging cannot be deleted, they are created automatic. You delete these albums by removing the tags from the photos. Then the album will vanish.

  • HT4236 I've run out of room on my hard drive. I bought an external drive and exported all my albums to the external drive then deleted the albums from iPhoto. I want to sync both from my ext drive and new albums in iPhoto. No dice. Help!

I've run out of room on my hard drive. I bought an external drive and exported all my albums to the external drive then deleted the albums from iPhoto. I want to sync both from my ext drive and new albums in iPhoto. My photos on the devices get wiped out when I sync to iPhoto since I deleted all the albums. But when I sync to my hard drive (where I maintained the album structure) the photos are copied to my iPad but lose all the hierarchy and folder structure. Now I have to scroll through thousands of photos to try to find the one I'm looking for. Before I sync any more devices I want to know the following: 1) can I restore the album structure on my iPad by using the photo cache? 2) is there a way to sync both new iPhoto albums AND pictures in the folders in my hard drive? And 3) how can I keep the photo hierarchy structure from my hard drive intact on my devices?

    Don't do that.
Copy /Photos/Photo library/ to the external.
    Hold Option and launch iPhoto.
Select Choose library and select the Photo library you copied to the external.

  • I am organizing my mom's iPhoto.  Can I delete her albums and then recreate them so they are accurate?  Will I lose all the pics or will they stay in the photo library?

I am in the process of organizing my mom's iPhoto.  She has so many albums that have incorrect photos in them that I would like to delete the albums and start over.  If I do that and then organize her events accurately, can I then recreate the albums correctly?
    Thanks

Yes, as long as you're sure it's albums you're deleting and not Events.  lf you delete an Event you're deleting the photos as well.

  • Iphoto deleted facebook albums

I deleted some albums from the iPhoto app without realising that they were synchronized to my Facebook acc. in the process i lost 16 albums. 7 years of memories and i have no back up. please help me recover these pictures urgently

Then, as you have no back up, you're into file recovery software, which is not cheap. An app like File Salvage will scan your disk for you and tell you with might be recoverable. Actual recovery will require that you purchase the app. There may be many files with the same or similar names. Always recover the largest file size.
There are other such apps. Search on Macupdate or the App Store

  • IPhoto '11 deletes albums

iPhoto '11 deletes albums, poof they're gone.

Perhaps not exactly the same fault but I have experienced two crashes while populating a particular album. After the crash, only the very first picture is left in the album. Furthermore, none of the pictures are in the "last 12 months" file. Worse: I cannot find the data file used by iPhoto. If I could find it, I might be ablle to recover from the backup disk. (I am 'populating' through drag and drop from a file folder).
The irony of this is that I am trying to assemble a simple slide show and I would normally do this by putting selected pictures into a file UNSORTED or, to use Apple's terminology: Arranged: none - but that doesn't work; the file is sorted on one of the parameters - name, size, type, etc - whether you want it or not. So I attempted to use iPhoto and have just lost three days work with, apparently, no way to recover in spite of having backup.

  • How do I delete an album of photos from iphoto?

How do I delete an album from iphoto?

Deleting Photos from an iPhoto Library
1 - from an Event or the Photos mode: select the photo(s) and use the Delete key to move the photos to the trash bin. Then empty the iPhoto Trash bin as follows:
2 - from an album, smart album, book, slideshow, card, etc.: select the photo(s) and use the key combination of Command+Option+Delete to move the photos to the trash bin.  Then empty the trash bin as above.
NOTE: deleting a photo from an album, slideshow, book, etc., with only the Delete key only deletes that photo from that item. Deleting a photo from an Event deletes ALL occurences of that photo in the library.

  • I deleted my albums from Facebook while cleaning my iPhoto archive.. Does anyone know if i can get them back and how? thanks!

i deleted my albums from Facebook while cleaning my iPhoto archive.. Does anyone know if i can get them back and how? thanks!

    while cleaning my iPhoto archive
What do you mean by that?  Do you mean you deleted photos or albums from your iPhoto Library?
You best solution is to use Time Machine to restore your library from just before you "cleaned your iPhoto archive".

  • IPhoto deleted facebook albums also deleted iPhoto albums.

I hope someone can help me out.
I started up iPhoto after deleting a lot of pictures from Facebook. It stated something like do you want to import the pictures from facebook albums? I was like no because they are already on my iMac but not it seems they are gone.
Is there any way to fix this? I have a time machine back-up but it happened about a month ago.
    Thank you in advance.

As documented iPhoto syncs with FB so changes made to photos uploaded from IP to FB in either place are reflected in the other - deleting from FB also deletes from that album in iPhoto

  • Please help needed os x lion I wish to transfer photos from the iPhoto library to a album or folder then delete them from the Library but when I do this it also deletes them from the album ? how do I do this please.

Please help needed os x lion I wish to transfer photos from the iPhoto library to a album or folder then delete them from the Library but when I do this it also deletes them from the album ? how do I do this please.

Albums are not places to store photos, they're more like "labels" you can apply to photos to better organize them. A single image file can be in multiple albums... they are not copies, it's simply been labelled as being in all those albums. So what you're trying to do doesn't make sense, because it's based on incorrect assumptions.
The iPhoto library will always show all photos that you have added to iPhoto.
