IPhoto 5 in Panther - "missing system files"

I'm running OS 10.3.9 (with iPhoto 4) on one partition of my iBook G4
I just installed 10.4.10 (with iPhoto 5) on a second partition.
I want both versions of iPhoto to access the same "Library", but once iP5 opens the library, it is no longer accessible with iP4, so....
I installed iP5 on the Panther (10.3.9) drive. Problem is, it won't open ... I get the error message "missing system files ... please re-install". Subsequent re-installations don't fix the problem. (BTW, I'm installing from the iBook installation discs, not the commercial version of iLife 05)
Long story short ... I identified the missing files: "AppleAppSupport.framework"
This directory is installed with Tiger ...but doesn't exist in Panther. When I tried to copy the directory from Tiger into Panther, I can't because the parent directory is read-only.
I found the solution was to change the permissions on the Panther directory (PrivateFrameworks) in order to add the "missing" directory to it, and then, change the permissions back. Problem is, I'm not sure how to do this. I have a rough understanding of the "Terminal Application" and what needs to be done, but I don't want to screw things up. Any help and/or sugggestions will be most appreciated.

  • IPhoto missing system files, wont reinstall

I tried iPhoto today and was given the following prompt:
iPhoto is missing system files and cannot open.
Please reinstall iPhoto from your iLife CD.
So I tried to reinstall the program but it never catches. It starts the installation but always tells me to try again.
I started having problems with QuickTime at the same time, is there a chance these two are related?
Any help would be very much appreciated.

  • Iphoto missing system files

I have just re-formated my hard drive and re-installed panther. When I load up iphoto an error message comes up: "missing essential system files, please re-install using you ilife dvd". But I only have the factory operating system installer disks which contnain iphoto 5 as part of bundled software. Can anyone help? Is my hard drive corrupt?

    Hi Litsa,
iPhoto must be missing some System framework files. Hopefully, you can find the answer on one of the links.

  • Help howto reinstall missing system file..

I've been having problems with iTunes not updating/installing, and another program installing. I checked the console log and it says it cannot find a file, I checked for that file and it is missing.
    /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework
How can I reinstall that file? I have a iMac 27in and the factory 10.6.2 reinstall disk. (in case that helps)
Unlike Windows discs, there isn't a folder with all the system files in it.
I really don't want to have to reformat or reinstall Mac OS.

There are many folders with system files but they are invisible so inexperience users don't accidentally delete something. You can go to any folder by selecting Go to folder from the Finder's Go menu. Enter the path to the file, /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/.
    To replace missing components:
How Restore Deleted or Missing OS X Components
A few of the basic OS X installed applications can be restored from the Optional Installs installer located in the Optional installs folder on your Installer DVD. However, if what you need is not there then follow the instructions below.
How to Use Pacifist to Restore Deleted or Missing OS X Components
Insert the OS X Installer DVD into the optical drive. Use a simple utility like TinkerTool to toggle invisibility so you can see invisible items. Alternatively, open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and at the prompt enter the following:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles Yes
    Press RETURN.
To turn off the display of invisible files repeat the above command substituting No for Yes.
The install packages are located in the /System/Installation/ folder on the DVD.
Download the shareware utility Pacifist from VersionTracker or MacUpdate. Use it to extract a fresh copy of the missing item(s) from the file archives on your OS X installation DVD. The file archives are in the /System/Installations/ folder (use Go to Folder option in the Go menu of the Finder.)
Here are Four Basic ways to use Pacifist (courtesy of George Orville.)
    A. Drag a .pkg icon onto the Pacifist window .....proceed to step 7.
    B. Click on “Open Package ....” and navigate to package desired and click “Open” in the open/save window.....proceed to step 7.
    C. Insert Mac OS X installer CD and when it mounts, navigate to .... Menu->Go->Go to Folder.
In the path field enter or paste ....
/Volumes/disc name/System/Installation/Packages (where disc name is the name of the CD/DVD that you inserted.
    • Click on the "Go" button .....
    • Drag a .pkg to Pacifist..... proceed to step 7.
The package you'll need will have to be discovered by trial and error, but for most applications you should start with the Essentials.pkg and/or Additional Essentials.pkg.
    D. Insert your Mac OS X install disk 1 .... and open Pacifist.
    1. In Pacifist, select "Open Mac OS X Install Packages" ... dialog may appear asking for disk 2, then disk 3 and finally disk 1 again.... {if DVD is not used)...If “Stop Loading” is selected...the procedure will stop!!!
2a. When loading is complete, a new window appears, click the triangle to display contents of each package...Select item and proceed to step 7.
2b. or click the “Find” icon in the Pacifist window and type the name of the software you need.
    3. In the list that comes back, click the top most entry for the item that you want. ..... that is the one for the English language.
    4. On the top of the Pacifist window, click “verify” .... you will probably be prompted for your password.
    5. Enter checks for.... “verify permissions” and “verify file contents.” and click “verify” ....enter password when prompted.... you will get back output which may look like this:
    20 files were scanned.
20 of 20 files were present on the hard disk.
0 of 20 files had file permissions that did not match those specified in the package.
0 of 20 files had checksums that did not match those specified in the package.
    6. Click “close”. Go to step 7.
    Extract or Install........
    7. In the Toolbar (upper left), you now have the option to extract or install. Click a file in the lower list and those two icons will be enabled.

    10. If “Install” is selected... dialog will appear with the location/path of the installed software. Click “Install”
    11. Type in your password, click “OK”
    • Pacifist will begin to extract files.
    12. In steps 8/10ß.... you also have the choice to “cancel”
    Notes.....
    • Pacifist may find that a file it is installing already exists on the hard disk. Pacifist will present you with an alert panel....
    Stop
    Leave original alone
    Update ..... Default selection
Replace .... Replace option should only be used on full install packages

  • Missing System file?

I just tried installing the iWork 08 trial on my girlfriend's new Macbook. When we bought it, I erased the hard drive and reinstalled Leopard from the install disks, but I didn't install the included software except for iLife.
Now, it's a couple weeks later and I wanted to install the iWork trial. I tried installing from the install disks and I got an error when trying to start Pages. It went something like "Pages was unable to start because it could not find /System/something something having to do with the Media Browser."
I then tried downloading the trial from the Apple website, installed iWork and got the same error message.
Do I need to try reinstalling the entire OS again? Or is there a way I could try to install only the missing file in the /System folder? I have a Time Machine backup just in case, but I've never played around with Terminal before, and I don't want to break anything.
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • System file is missing on my Satellite A60

My Toshiba A6O is buggered! It keeps saying that the Windows SYSTEM file is missing so I reformat and it still says it??s missing! What can I do, because it won??t actually start up properly! The nearest I get is to a screen saying about starting in safe mode/other modes!
    Cheers!
    Spencer

    Hi Spencer,
I presume that you gave tried to re-install your system from the recovery CDs. If so then the system should boot correctly. If it does not and it still reports a missing SYSTEM file then I think your hard drive may be suspect.
If you can boot the unit into 'SAFE' mode try running a check of the hard drive to see if it reports any bad sectors.

  • Trouble saving system files using resource hacker.

I have a Windows 7 pc. I recently installed a new program called resource hacker which allows you to modify system files. I also on my computer have a Windows XP VHD which I also installed the program. I first tried editing the explorer.exe file on windows
    7. The few first times I was able to use system restore to restore my computer back to an earlier date. I edited the explorer.exe file on Windows XP also. On Windows 7 once it was edited, I followed the instructions on how to save it. When I saved it I has
to restart my computer. Once I did that, the desktop color came on and the icons and start menu and taskbar were gone as if there were no explorer.exe file at all. This time when I did it I went to system restore in the system recovery options before
I got to the log on screen. It said that there were no restore points available. I also tried putting the original files in the windows folder through task manager, but that didn't work either. when I restarted I got the same screen as I did before. I managed
to save it on Windows XP. In Windows XP I just had to go and end the explorer.exe file in task manager. I did that and I got the desired result that I edited it for. On Windows 7 I followed the instructions of how to save it, but it just won't work. I followed
the instructions just as they said but I get the same result every time. On the website that it tells you how to save it, but what I don't understand is that how they did it so easily on Windows 7, but when you try to save it on your own computer you
run into that same problem that I am running into. What I don't get is that how it works on Windows XP, but I can't get it to work on Windows 7. I hope that help clarify the issue that I am having with my computer and the program.

Yes, I suspect there're some corrupted or missing system files, please press win+R, launch "Run" dialog box, type "cmd" or command prompt in recovery console tool (you should login in as a admin), then type the following command
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
check if it can help you fix the incorrect files.
Regarding to the the missing restore point, please take a look in this link:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/win7/archive/2011/02/16/restore-points-lost-after-system-rebooting.aspx
Please also check the event viewer, run "eventewr" in command prompt, it will launch the event viewer interface

  • Getting Iphoto files out of Previous System file

I upgraded to Leopard using the Archive choice. My iphoto and iweb files are in the Previous System file under User and won't load when I load the programs. How do I get them to load. How much free disk space do I need on my HD

    axk2
You're going to have to change the permissions on that path to get access to the files there.
You can do this using the Get Info Window, just make yourself the owner of the folders in turn. When you get to your Home Folder, drag the foldes you want to the desktop. When you've that done post back and we can get you the rest of the way there.

  • T40 missing or corrupted \windows\system file after recovery process

My T40 Thinkpad had a corrupt drive so I secured the recovery disks from IBM to rebuild the hard disk.  The recovery process seemed to work well, but when completed and prompted to remove all disks and reboot, the system booted and failed before Windows XP loaded with an error message that the windows\system file was corrupt or missing.  Any recommendations on how to succesfully recover?  Thanks.

boot off the WinXP Disc and run a repair.  Did it mention the boot.ini file being corrupt, or something else?

  • Missing/corrupted system file in ..\system32\config and in ..\repair folder

    Hello everyone,
Could you please help me with this proble ? I have got Windows XP PRO SP3 OEM.
Today when I started pc i have got error meesage system file in Windows/system32/config missing. When I look into folder system file is here, but maybe he is broken. I said fine no problém I have got Windows/repair. I only need to copy default file to config
    folder.
    But..
When I wanted to copy system file from Windows/repair folder there is no system file only system.bak. So I copy this file into Windows/system32/config and rename it onto system. I tried reboot PC, I saw starting Windows logo I almost jump into air, but after
few seconds my smile disappear. I got automatic restart. I tried it again, again and again same. So I tried run pc in safe mode with same result.
On the internet I read its can be by oem version of system. But where can I get system file now. Its possible to take system file form another pc ? Thank you for your advice.

    Problem solved.
There is solution which help me, so maybe it can help to others.
Its better when you can unplug disk from pc and connect it to another via usb or via ata/sata such as another disk in the pc.
    1. At first at computer you need to see invisible files and protected files of operation system.
                          Computer > F10 > Tools > Folder options
    2. Now on the "corrupted disk" in the root you can see folder called "System volume infomation", but I think you dont have permission for it, right ?
Right click > Properties > Security > Add your self and add rights
-now you can open system volume information folder
    3. open _restore{hexa} folder. Now zou can see a lot of folders started RP<number>, try to open the folder with higher nubmer. Next open snapshot folder. Now you can see a lot of files. But we want
_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SOFTWARE or _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SYSTEM, choose what you need. Now copy file whant you need for example _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SYSTEM and rename it for SYSTEM.
    4. Open this path Windows\system32\config and rename your corrupted file. For example "system" to system.bad
    5. Last copy your new "system" file from SYSTEM VOLUME FOLDER which you created in step 3 to Windows\system32\config folder.
    6. Plug your hdd back into your pc and start pc and hope all will be fine :) .
I hope this instruction will help someone, good day and smile :)

  • I write both JPG and DNG files in the camera.   Camera is a Leica Monochrom.   Photo, unlike iPhoto, seems to ignore DNG files and only imports JPG files.   What am I missing here?

I write both JPG and DNG files in the camera.   Camera is a Leica Monochrom.   Photo, unlike iPhoto, seems to ignore DNG files and only imports JPG files when both are present on the SD card.  JPGs are used for quick proofing on an iPad.    DNG RAW files are edited on a Mac Pro (2013).    Other than deleting the JPGs before importing images from the SD card,  is there any way to force Photo to select and import only the DNG images?

    Thanks Larry,
I did see the J stacked in the lower left of the thumbnails but couldn't figure out how to get to whatever is below it.   How do you select R?
I use an iPad to do quick proofs of my images.   A JPG is good enough for a proof ( dust on the lens,  composition, blown out image, etc. ).   The iPad is JPG friendly and can load the images quickly.    Serious editing takes place on my Mac Pro with the DNG files.   I use the same workflow with the the Leica M 240.   iPhoto has been a quick and easy importer to the Mac capturing all of the metadata in the EXIF sidecar file ( location, date, time,  camera settings, lens type).  A quick scan in iPhoto for the "keepers" let's me export those worth editing to Lightroom/Bridge/Photoshop.  I typically shoot 50 images from three locations in a normal day.  If I'm lucky I'll get 1 worth real work to add to the portfolio.

  • Libraries vs system files

I am a new mac user just switching over from years of windows.  I have a question with regard to the "Library" system that is used by Iphoto and Itunes on the mac.  With windows if I wanted to see an individual file, I would use explorer and find the file in an individual folder.  When I use the "Finder" on the mac to look through my photos, for example, I still see all of my old windows style files that I imported from my old computer, however I also see a single icon titled Iphoto library.  This file is roughly equal to the size of all of the system files combined.  My question is do I have duplicates saved on the mac?  Do I need the windows style files on the mac at all or is everything managed through iphoto.  Can I delete everything but the Iphoto library icon?  Same questions as to the Itunes library.  Any help would be appreicated.

  • How can I repair Vista system files with only a Toshiba recovery disc??

I have pretty much come to the conclusion that the reason I can't install Vista service pack 2 is due to some corrupt vista files. I ran the program that checks that system files and it said some are corrupt. There are some things I can't do, like turn on the Windows firewall even from that special adminostrar screen, or if I schedule a check disc scan, when I reschedule it for start up, it doesn't do it at startup. I had a Red Screen about a year ago, and it did a bunch of stuff and at the end, it said you had a major event and contact your administartor. Well, I am the administartor, lol. Anyway, it worked fine and I attribute these problems to that event.
Vista discs come with a repair option. All I have is the Toshiba disc that lets you reinstall the Toshiba and Vendor applications OR reformat the hard drive. I am not going to spend days trying to get my system back to where it is by tracking down everything I have installed especially when its working. Is there a work around? I will buy a Vista Home Premium disc if I have to before refortmatting. I have an x205-S9349 with Vista Home Premium. THANKS!
