IPhoto 5 is being indomitably slow

Hi, I'm using iPhoto 5 and for the past few days it's been acting so slow that it isn't even worth bothering to use. It takes about 5 seconds just for the scrollbar to move one notch, and opening individual photos takes even longer. I have 2000+ photos in my library, but I know people who have a heck of a lot more and don't have this problem.
I also don't have too many other memory-heavy programs open -- iTunes, MS Word, and Safari, that's about it.
If anyone has any advice I would really appreciate it!
Thanks,
Caroline

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Go to Settings>Safari and Clear Cookies, Data and History
    - Restore from backup. See:

  • Safari being REALLY slow or sometimes "Cannot find server"! HELP!

Right, i have the new 'Safari 4' but its being really slow.
When trying to load up webpages, it sometimes takes AGES to load a page, or sometimes it even comes up with the message 'Safari cannot find the server'.
I have 'LittleSnitch' installed so I can see when Safari is using the internet to either upload or download information and most of the time, Safari is sat there doing nothing and not downloading any information...
I have reset Safari to no avail!
    Why might this be happening?

    'Safari cannot find the server'
Generally refers to a DNS problem.
(First, if yours is an Intel Mac, check that Safari is not running in Rosetta, which is enough to slow it to a crawl.)
Adding DNS codes to your Network Settings, should gives good results in terms of speed-up:
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu. Click on TCP/IP and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' enter the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(An explanation of why that is both safe and a good idea can be read here: http://www.labnol.org/internet/tools/opendsn-what-is-opendns-why-required-2/2587 /
Open DNS also provides an anti-phishing feature: http://www.opendns.com/solutions/homenetwork/anti-phishing/ )
Whilst in System Preferences/Network you should also turn off 'IPv6' in your preference pane, as otherwise you may not get the full speed benefit (the DNS resolver will default to making SRV queries). If you want to know what IPv6 is:
This is Apple's guidance on iPv6:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8708.html
Click on Apply Now and close the window.
    Restart Safari, and repair permissions.

my macbook pro is being very slow does it need cleaning up? if so what do i do?
is there a programme to use or should i take back to apple to ask them.

What do you mean by slow? Slow can mean many things. Is it the applications? Your Internet speeds? Do you feel you could benefit from a memory upgrade? I'm just looking for a little more information so I can help you effectively.

  • Finder being very slow on user account

    Hello,
I have a retina MacBook Pro with 16GB of ram. I am having an issue with finder being very slow on one of my user accounts, sometimes it is taking up to a 2mins to show the files in the folder. Also if often hangs and I get the beachball icon when clicking into folders and just using finder in general. This is on both local drives and network drives. I have 2 user accounts one for personal and one for work. My personal account has no problems and it is fast as I would expect from an SSD. My work account has all the same applications and I can't see anything obvious in activity monitor that would be causing it to be slow. I've thought about making a new user account but I would like to have all my settings etc the same as I have it set up just right now.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Andy

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    First, empty the Trash.
Triple-click the line below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 -o -acl \) 2> /dev/null | wc -l
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
The output of this command, on a line directly below what you entered, will be a number such as "41." Please post it in a reply.

  • Acrobat 8 Professional being very slow

I'm having some trouble with Acrobat 8 being very slow, there's at least a 10 second lag between any mouse clicks or key presses. I have uninstalled and reinstalled and everything works fine up until i enter a digital signature, that's about when it starts slowing down. I've been using digital signatures for a while now and haven't had any problems until recently. some system changes are installation of Office 2007 and desktop search. I've told desktop search to basically only index email items, since that's the only reason i use it. Started noticing some slowing down after 2007 upgrade, but i don't have much of a choice in whether or not that is installed. has anyone else experienced this and possibly have a solution?

Hi cdjones... have you tried using Acrobat® with NOTHING else running in the background? Try this... press ctrl + Shift + esc to bring up your Task Manager. End process on every item under Your username (except Task Manager and explorer) then use Acrobat®. Notice any difference? If you do, then one or more of those applications running in the background are slowing things down.

  • My mac is being as slow as ****

First of all, my mac has 194 MB of ram which I know is what is doing it. However, a while ago when I got it it wasn't acting so slow and now it is being so slow. I think at the time it was 254 MB I believe.
Do you guys have any tips on how it will not be a pain when I do anything and it freezes?

It sounds to me that either the RAM board/or RAM slot on the machine has failed, or you are reading how much available hard disk space you have. Regardless, Mac OS X running on anything less than 384 MB of RAM can be slow. About This Mac in the Apple menu tells you how much built-in memory you have. And if it is the Finder window and not the About This Mac window where you reading 194 MB available, your hard disk is too full to run Mac OS X. You need to free up at least 3 GB of hard disk space.

  • My phone will randomly start being incredibly slow

I got my phone about a week before christmas of 2013 and for awhile it was good & then it randomly started to become incredibly slow & sometimes just shut off. Now it wasn't freezing, so don't confuse the two. It's just anything I do on the phone it takes forever to do as if it's sticking. It takes me several & several swipes to even change screens. & then it will randomly stop. But when it is being very slow, it takes 4x the normal time to charge. I'll go to bed with 10% charge & wake up about 8 hours later with just barely 50%. Do I need to buy a completely new phone or is there something I can do to fix this easily??

    The Basic Troubleshooting Steps are:
Restart... Reset... Restore from Backup...  Restore as New...
    Restart / Reset
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
Try this First... You will Not Lose Any Data...
Turn the Phone Off... ( if it isn’t already )
Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...
Wait for the Apple logo to Appear and then Disappear...
Usually takes about 15 - 20 Seconds... ( But can take Longer...)
    Release the Buttons...
    Turn the Phone On...
If that does not help... See Here:

  • IPhoto barely runs, always freezes, slows down entire computer

My iPhoto (v9.4.3) runs SO painfully slow, and has been doing so for months. Every time I open it to import or view photos, I end up having to force quit at least once. It causes any other applications running to lag and freeze when it's open as well. I'm running on a mid 2012 MacBook Pro (OS 10.8.5), so tech specs/memory shouldn't be an issue. The iPhoto trash is empty.
It could be caused in part by the size of my library (over 75 gigs) but isn't the program designed to hold photos?! I'm a photographer, so being able to import, view, and sort through my photos is a necessity. Is there a fix that I'm missing? Otherwise I'm fed up and ready to look for an alternative program.
    Can you help me???

How big is your HD? How much free space on it?
The size of your Library in Gigs is of no concern as long as you have enough disk space. The number of items is more important. iPhoto v9 is good for the same number as Aperture - about 1,000,000.
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
    Post back with the result.

  • MacBook Pro being really slow and vert little free RAM.

    Hi,
Just recently my MacBook Pro has been running really slowly when navigating between applications and tabs in safari. I checked to see how much RAM was free and it said only 30MB. I have no more apps open or things running than I normally do. This Mac is 6 months old but my old mac that was nearly 3 years old tended to run quicker, and as mentioned, I have no more apps running than I previously had. Maybe Word, Excel, iTunes and Safari. Can anyone help explain what might be making it slow and what might be hogging all the RAM?
    Thanks
    Matt

  • Do I get confirmation that my Iphoto book is being produced and sent out?

I put together a photo book in Iphoto and submitted it. It went through all the rendering and processing. My credit card bill shows it was in the process of being charged, but there was no confirmation from Apple that my book will be produced and mailed out. Is this how it is suppose to happen?
    Thank you,

  • Mid 2007 macbook being too slow?

I purchased my macbook in mid 2007 and it is covered under applecare till September. For the past couple months it has become increasingly slow. Sometimes when I go to wake my computer it ends up shutting down and waking it up makes it restart, sometimes I wake it then it immediately goes back to sleep, or takes an incredibly long time to show me my password so I can log in and a very long time to go from logging into actually getting to my desktop. Once there half the time my applications need to be force quit or take a very long time to load. It there something I can do to stop this? It seems to get worse by the week, does applecare cover this increasingly slowness? I have this laptop for another six months before it is not covered any longer and I want it to act like a regular laptop and stop being so unreliable.

Alrighty, plenty of free hard drive space and RAM there.
I'd back up your personal data if at all possible, just in case.
    Things to try:
    1) Create a new user account (System Preferences>Accounts, click the + sign in the lower-left corner). Log out of the current account and into the new one. Does the computer work better in the new user account?
    2) Reboot the computer with the Shift key held down. This puts the computer into Safe Mode and may take a few extra minutes, so be patient. Does the computer work better in Safe Mode?
    3) Repair the hard drive.
*Insert *Install Disc 1* and restart the computer with the C key held down.
*Once the Installer has loaded, choose a language.
*From the Installer menu choose *Disk Utility* (It may be under the Utilities menu; I haven't booted from a Tiger disc in a while!)
*Click on *Macintosh HD* in the left-hand pane.
    *Click the *repair disk* button.
If Disk Utility can't finish repairs, report the error(s) here.
