IPhoto 5 loss of my albums

I recently put some photos on the net using Galerie. I gave up on .Mac because I currently live in Europe. I find Galerie an excellent tool.
The problem is that since I upgraded to iPhoto 5.04 my albums folder has disappeared. I can no longer use my albums folder to create new pages.
The installation went smoothly and I have no problems other than my missing albums. I find this very frustrating, please help.

Hi Valerie,
iPhoto 5 now stores the Album information in a data xml file. The Albums folder within the iPhoto Library folder is no longer used. At some point, usually after a rebuild, you will no longer have that folder in the Finder.
If you need to access photos from an album it is very difficult for a third party application to navigate the iPhoto Library in order to find the photo you need. You will have to know the date of import in order to find the photo.
There are some third party applications that can read the xml file and can navigate the iPhoto library and show you the Albums. Hopefully more applications will be revised to read this file.
Until then you will have to Share/Export the photos to the desktop. You can then navigate to the desktop to use the photos (example: web uploading from online photo site)
If your application supports drag and drop, you can drag the photo from an open iPhoto Library window into your application.
For email you can also use the email icon within iPhoto to open a message with the highlighted photo attached.
You can also use spotlight to find images in an Album...
This is what I have done using Spotlight to find my images that are in iPhoto albums without opening iPhoto..
In iPhoto, select the album, then select all, go to Photos/batch change.
Change the comments to text. In the text field I put the name of the Album.
Do this for each album.
Close iPhoto.
Open Spotlight and put in the name of the Album ( you have to remember the names of the albums or have then written down)
In the spotlight search results. click on "show all"
Under "Images" click on the "xx more" to show all the images in the album.
Make sure you have it in icon view, the icon view box is the last one on the blue images line.
Now you can control click on the image to "reveal in finder", open in iPhoto or Mail, etc.
I am not sure if this is going to make you happy and it is a little more work, but you can find images in albums and even view them in a slideshow (by clicking the play arrow at the end of the Images highlighted blue line) using Spotlight, all without opening iPhoto.

  • New version of iPhoto - trying to import old albums back in

I recently re-formatted my HD. My iPhoto library has always been on an external drive, so I assumed I'd just reload iPhoto and import the old albums back on from that drive. The later version of iPhoto that I now have is 5.0.4, and asked it to "Add to Library" via the File menu. (I chose the whole folder in the iPhoto folder). After processing that request overnight, all it did was give me an error message that a load of albums were not recognizable, but import all the individual photos from my old albums into one large mix of 4,000 photos, organized only by year. (In other words, all the album labels are gone.)
Is there a better way to import these photos back into iPhoto and retaining the album label data?

    HI robert,
If you still want to have the iPhoto Library on the external:
    Close iPhoto
Drag the iPhoto Library folder in the Pictures folder to the desktop...you can delete this library if you wish.
Hold down the Option key while launching iPhoto. Keep it held down until you get a message screen asking you to "create" a new library or "choose" another library to open. Hit the "choose" button.
Navigate to the external drive and select the iPhoto Library there.
    Hit the "open" button.
Since your library on the external is an older version, iPhoto will tell you it needs to update the library.
It will take some time, so let iPhoto update your library. Once it is done, everything should be back the way it was.

Hi, using iphoto 6, i suddenly lost albums: they are still in the directory, but no pictures in some albums.Using finder, I can locate the pictures and even get preview. But impossible to import them. Anyone can help? thanks

Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download <a href="http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/"><b><u>iPhoto Library Manager</b></u></a> and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 6* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • How can I stop iPhoto from trying to import albums from MoblieMe?

Since 1 July iPhoto tries to import albums from MobileMe upon each start-up. I never created any album in MobileMe so the attempt to imort fails. I can then only click 'Retry' or 'Remind me later'. There is no option to tell iPhoto to not import any album.
Any idea how to get out of this loop?

Close iTunes before switching profiles or disable fast user switching.

I have iphoto on my iphone, many albums, these albums will upload to iphoto on my mac ... I can do it?

You will have to move the photos in those iPhoto (iOS) albums to the Camera Roll so that you can either manually import them into your Mac's iPhoto library or use Photo Stream to automatically import from you phone to the library.  However, you will have to be running Mavericks on your Mac.
What system and iPhoto versions are on your Mac?

My iPhoto has dumped all my albums. I have ran and re ran all the repair and re build programs, nothing is working, how to I get my photos back???

Just as an FYI: some people report issues where their albums are missing but their photos remain. Some mention photos going but the albums still present, just not populated.
There is no iPhoto 10.8.2. Perhaps you're referring to the version of the OS you have? Not especially relevant, the version of iPhoto is what's needed here.
I mention this should you seek help in the future.
For me: vague and incomplete would describe your attempt at seeking help. You're too lazy to give an accurate description of your issue, too lazy to tell us what you've tried to repair it - so we don't waste time your time (and ours) making suggestions you've already tried - and when asked don't respond except to abuse the person who tries to help you.
    Good luck with your issue.

  • Migrating to iPhoto from Picasa (PC) - Automatic Album Creation?

    Hey everyone,
I'm migrating my photo library from my PC using Picasa to iPhoto finally. My folder structure is that each album has its own folder. With close to 100 albums, I'd like to just have them import into iPhoto as albums. I notice that if I drag an individual folder into iPhoto that it creates an album and roll for that folder. However, if I do a folder with multiple subfolders in it, only ONE album is created (while a roll is created for each subfolder)
Basically, does anyone know of a way to either:
    1) Creates an album from each film roll automatically
    2) Import multiple folders, creating individual albums
    Thanks so much!

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Iphoto 08 and iphoto 09  sharing a single album on a external drive

    Hello all,
I have a mac mini with iphoto 08 on it as well as a Drobo external storage device that houses all my photos video and movies - I just purchased a new 24" imac that came with iphoto 09 -
Can I share the iphoto album that resides on the drobo with the mac mini as well as the new imac -
I am asked to upgrade the album when ever I open the iphoto application - if I do this then the Mac mini can not open the iphoto application - I am guessing that this is due to different versions - imovie works perfectly -
    thanks !

Welcome to the Apple user to user assistance forums
No - as you have observed iPhoto '08 and iPhoto '09 use a different library structure and neither can read the others library - iPhoto '09 can convert '08 libraries to '09 but it is (as you are warned when you do it) a one way process - if you want to share a library all versions of iPhoto must be the same so you would need to purchase iLife '09 for the mini

  • IPHOTO 09 WONT SYNC SELECTED ALBUMS WITH IPHONE 4 VIA ITUNES

I am posting this as a question and will proceed to answer it as per the solution provided by Applecare case id
    265819669
    System
    I run Powemac G5 OSX 10.5.8 Leopard, iLife 09 and iPhone 4 & iPad2
Software versions are iPhoto 09 V 8.1.2, iTunes and iOS 5.01 on theiPad and iPhone
    Problem 1
Following software updates on all my devices I began to run into sync problems with my iphone 4, namely error message 1104
On contacting my mobile service provider they suggested:
connect iphone to itunes, selected photo tab and untick the box sync photos from iphoto then proceed to sync
    Solution 1
This allowed iphone 4 to sync thus eliminating my 1104 error message problem
    Problem 2
iPhone 4 will no longer sync selected albums, events and faces with iPhone 4
After level 3 escalation within Apple the problem was reffered to iphoto computer support who delievered this fix.
It was identified as a problem with my iphoto library not being seen by itunes despite my iphoto library functioning normally (or so I thought).
Solution 2 (I will try and articulate this as best as I can)
Open iPhoto app whilst alt key is depressed
select/ locate the iphoto library source file from your hard drive which itunes is using.  This now tells you where iphoto library resides ie this is your library in which all your photos slideshows and star rating data resides.
FOR THE PURPOSE OF THIS FIX IT WAS AGREED TO RESTORE AN EARLIER VERSION OF MY IPHOTO LIBRARY FROM A TIME MACHINE BACKUP - TIME MACHINE SAVED THE DAY HERE - TAKE HEED - BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP.  BEFORE PROCEEDING ANY FURTHER, I WOULD RECOMMEND BACKING UP AT THIS STAGE, JUST FOR SAFETY SAKE.
Go to Time machine, locate iPhoto library and then select restore.
The file will be restored to it's original location and you can now begin to work on the fix without jeopardising your original library
    Close iphoto, and reset system
Open iPhoto with alt key depressed, select the recently restored file
Open itunes and try and sync your iOS device
Does the selected, albums and faces tabs in Photo tab now work? If so problem solved, if not read on.
    Restart system
Open iPhoto with the alt and command key depressed
(You will be working on the restored file as iphoto located this automatically when opening - see previous note)
a list of boxes will appear detailing repair permission etc - ensure all are ticked and follow instruction to rebuild reorganise the iphoto library.  Sorry for being vague here but I can't remember the screen details.
Let iphoto rebuild the iPhoto library file
    close iPhoto and restart system
Try the sync process again in itunes.  Does the Photo tab option whick allows you to select pictures, albums and faces should now work?
If so, problem solved, well almost.  If not, refer for further help.
Given you have just cured the problem with a restored backup iPhoto library file, should you need to work on your most recent file since that back up, repeat solution 2 from the beggining.  Once complete, you will need to move the iPhoto library file which didn't sync to the trash.
Should you have events in your originl iPhoto library which don't reside in your backup file, export these events into folders by using export "current" feature in iPhoto, then drage them bag into your new library once your problem is solved.
USE GREAT CAUTION HERE, DON'T DELTE YOUR TRASH UNTIL YOU HAVE TESTED EVERYTHING WORKS CORRECTLY.
I hope this helps someone, if so please let me know.

Other folks have resolved similar issues by trashing  the iPod Photo Cache.

  • Upgrade to Iphoto 6 wiped out all albums

One of my clients upgraded to iphoto 6 and it erased all of his albums (the originals are still in the library, however all of his organized albums are gone).
This also happened to his itunes when he upgraded.
Is there something that can be done to recover these and/ or something to do in the future to avoid it for the next update when its available?
    Thanks much,
    Logan

    Logan:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Does your client still have a copy of the previous library folder? If not then I don't think there's much he can do. They can try rebuilding the library and see if that will help but I don't think it will . The library database file has been damaged. Give it a try anyway. Here's how:
launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three option.
If they do have a copy of the previous library have them try the following:
1 - copy the current library to the Desktop
2 - copy the previous version library folder into the Pictures folder.
3 - download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, putting your administrator login name, long or short, in the owner and group sections. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field.
4 - launch iPhoto and it should indicate that the library needs updating and proceed.

  • How to get in IPhoto chosen top photo of album presented in iOS

On Mac a photo can be chosen as top photo.
In Photos on iOS a random? photo is presented.

In fact, I find the following instructions easier to teach someone how to do it (because copying a link is not easy for everybody, many people will end up clicking on the link and then not know what to do):
1- Locate the Picasa Web Album you want to import
2- Click on the link "RSS" (in blue on the right side). This opens the album in RSS mode
3- Copy the url of the page (it doesn't matter that it now start with "feed://")
4- In iPhoto, open the File menu and select "Subscribe to Photo Feed"
5- Do a "Paste" and add (by typing): &imgdl=1
    Then hit Enter
6- Wait for the album to display all images.
7- Select all and copy them to the iPhoto Library with Drag & Drop
    8- Delete the Feed
(wow, I am stunned it makes 8 steps when spelling things out!)
It is interesting to note that, after step 2, if you add &imgdl=1 in the url and go there, you get what seems like the same page (the album in RSS), but the links to each photo are now hi-res (the photo name under each pic). Clicking one downloads the hi-res picture via the browser.
This is not satisfactory by itself as it would need to be done for each picture, and it doesn't put the picture directly into iPhoto, but I just find it worth noting.

  • Sharing iPhoto Library - Order in which albums appear

A friend is sharing her iPhoto library on her iMac over her home wireless network to a MacBook Air. This works well except that the list of albums on the MacBook Air doesn't seem to bear any resemblance to the order in which they appear on the iMac. As she has a lot of albums it can be difficult to find the one she wants on the MacBook Air.
Is there a logic to the order in which albums are listed on the Mac which is accessing the shared albums?
    Thanks for any advice!
    Andrew Spackman

Just ran a test and was able to rearrange the albums in my iPhoto library and got the same order in Front Row. So it's doable.
Have you rebuild the library? Backup and launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed to rebuild the library. Select the last three options.
If that doesn't help open the library package and move the AblumData.xml and AlbumData2.xml files to the Desktop. Launch iPhoto and then Front Row.
Next, delete the Front Row preference file, com.apple.frontrow.plist, and try again.
