IPhoto 6.0.3 - Library name in title bar?

I just upgraded. I thought that previous versions showed the folder name of the Library in the title bar. Now it just says "iPhoto" and the only obvious way to determine where the library is, is to use the "Show File" item on a photo, and then use the Finder to backtrack up the folder tree. This defeats the ability to have multiple Libraries. Grrr.

Neil:
iPhoto has the library name in the title bar for me. Started with V6 and still does so with 6.0.3. A couple of times witb 6.0.2 it seemed to not do that but then started up again. Didn't do anything to try to correct it but maybe some of my permissions repairs for other issues helped. You might give it a try.

  • IPhoto LIbrary name in title bar

Once upon a time iPhoto would show the name of the iPhoto Library in use in the title bar. If, for instance, I decided to create a Library called "Vacations," when I opened iPhoto by option-clicking and chose the Vacations library, the iPhoto title bar would say "iPhoto - Vacations."
I've looked around and see the latest questions regarding this were back in 2006. I've tried a bunch of ways to attempt to get this to pop up, but to no avail.
Any suggestions? Am I missing something?

You can get the library name in the title bar if you use  iPhoto Library Manager to select and open your library.  That feature works with the free version.

  • With multiple libraries, why don't I see library name when opening iPhoto?

I have split my iPhoto Library, so that I have one library per year, eg library name: iPhoto 2009. When I open iPhoto, choosing a library, shouldn't I see the library name somewhere? Thanks,
    Owen

Generally, when I open iPhoto, the header in the iPhoto window just says "iPhoto", regardless of the library used, but, on one occasion, I did see the library name in the header. I don't know what caused this.
I backup photos to an external HD, but I prefer to also have a backup DVD, at least for the originals. I can't do that with a single iPhoto Library.
    Thanks,
    Owen

  • Will changing iPhoto library name affect my photos?

I want to change the name of my iPhoto library from 'Samsung HDD' (in the picture) to other name. I'm going to change it via Finder -- by using Get Info and rename it, is this the right method? And will this affect my photos?
    Thanks in advances.

no - but backup first and after changing the iPhoto library name you have to depress and hold he option key, launch iPhoto and select the libraqry withits new name

  • Find ~/Pictures/iPhoto\ Library -name *db -exec sqlite3 {} vacuum \;

this is what i did and now the library is not compatible any more.
can anybody give me a new code/ command to redo or fix?

What were you trying to do with that Terminal script? The easiest fix is to restore the library from your backup.
What happens when you try to launch iPhoto and open the library?

I imported photos from an old iPhoto (2001) to photo library and can now see them only as thumbnails but not when I click on them. The screen is black cannot see or print either. Is there any way to salvage those old photos? I now use iLife09. OS 10.6

Did you import the old iPhoto library into the new one? That's not what you want to do because you will import all of the original, modified and thumbnail files as if they were original files. Lots of duplicates and useless small photos.
Do you have a backup copy of the library that you imported into to?  If you do then bring it in and then use  iPhoto Library Manager to merge the two libraries into a new, 3rd library.
If you don't then you'll have to try to fix the current one and then cull out the duplicates and small useless photos as follows:  make a temporary, duplicate copy of your library and apply the three fixes in order as necessary.
    Fix #1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your HD/User/Home()/ Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your HD/User/Home()/Library /Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #3
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If this doesn't fix the problem you'll have to start over from scratch and create a new library from the files inside the Originals folder of your current library.  But first you should cull out the small photos that would be the thumbnails from the 2001 library.
Move the Originals folder to the Desktop, open and do a search for Kind=photo, File size is less than 10 KB.  That should find all of the thumbnail files which you can then drag to the Trash.  You might have to make that less than 50 KB. Then Import the remaining photos into a new iPhoto library.

  • When I start iPhoto it says the library needs to be updated and when I try to do that it says that the program is in use or unreadable. This is the the first time I have ever launched it. What do I do?

When I start iPhoto it says the library needs to be updated and when I try to do that it says that the program is in use or unreadable. This is the the first time I have ever launched it. What do I do? It keeps going around in circles. I have tried re-starting the computer and re-launching the program holding down the option-command keys. Neither helped.

What version of iPhoto are you using?
This is the the first time I have ever launched it.
Does that mean there are no photos in the library? If so move it to the Trash bin in the Dock and launch iPhoto again.
If there are photos in the library do the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
and select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Photos deleted from iPhoto, but still in Library folder

    iPhoto 9.5.1
Strange behavior in iPhoto : let's say I imported 100 photos. Then, in iPhoto, deleted 80, keeping 20. Emptied trash in iPhoto. Then emptied Trash in Finder.
Let's say the "_DSC1234.JPG" photo was among deleted files. When searching "_DSC1234.JPG" in Spotlight, I find it in the "Master" folder of the "iPhoto Library" folder (Photothèque in French).
I've got a lot of photos deleted, but kept in Library, Not good for privacy, not good for hard drive space.
For exemple, I find 514 ".NEF" photos in the iPhoto searchbox. But when searching in the iPhoto LIbrary folder with Spotlight for files with ".NEF" in their names, I find 1048 ! No duplicates, no previews or "faces" (hey are in JPEG), but photos I deleted, before emptying iPhoto and Finder trash !!
    Rebuilding Library didn't help.
I'm using a user account not allowed to administrate the computer. Maybe a link ?
The question was already asked, but never answered :
Growing iPhoto Library, deleted photos still in folders
Deleted Photos:  Why are they still in my iphoto library folder?
Photos deleted from within iPhoto are still in Library folder
    Thanks for your help !

Strange behavior again, with the original library : If I select NO event and use the menu Information, I've got 14.634 photos. If I select all events, I've got 15.760 photos. How can I have more photos in all events than in my Library ??????
Check, if you have hidden photos.
File > New Smart Album,  with a rule: Photo is hidden
In my iPhoto Library the "Hidden" flag accounts for the difference in the Photos count between selecting all events and no events.
Make sure, "View > Hidden Photos" is enabled in the View menu, so you can recognize hidden photos by the X.

  • Upgrading iPhoto library to iPhoto '08 corrupted the library

I've seen discussions on a similar topic, but none with quite the same issue. I moved my iPhoto library from my old iBook G4 to my also old (but upgraded) PowerBook G4. The PowerBook G4 had iPhoto '08, so my library was converted/upgraded when I opened it the first time. This corrupted the library. I was able to rebuild part of the library but manually dragging the individual folders in the iPhoto package contents to the iPhoto icon in the dock, saving half of the pictures, but it isn't working for the rest of them. Specifically, those pictures whose organization (album names) were retained in the iPhoto library package contents were successfully imported. But for the rest of the pictures, iPhoto imposed its own organization in the package contents: that is, my album names are no longer there, and the photos are organized in folders with dates (eg, April 1, 2010) for their names. When I try to manually import these pictures by dragging the date-named folder to the dock, I get an error message. What do I do?

I would start by trying again - updating older iPhoto libraries does not normally corrupt them - connect he two systems together and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the pictures folder of the new system and launch iPhoto

  • IPhoto '09 - Separating large library

    Hi,
my iPhoto library has grown over the years and it currently around 76Gb.
In an effort to make it more manageable, I'm splitting it into smaller libraries going by the year that they were taken.
The way I've been doing this is by creating a New Library, showing the package contents of the iPhoto Library in Finder and then dragging and dropping from the Originals - <year> folder into iPhoto. Every new library has two years worth of photos.
Now, years 2000 through to 2008 were easy to do because every event had it's own folder, the event folders had the same name as the events in iPhoto so once imported, all the events were there as in the original iPhoto Library.
Years 2009 and 2010 however, haven't done this. Although in the iPhoto Library they are organised in events, in Finder, some of them are named by the date they were taken and other folders are named by the image name given by the camera. Basically, it's a bit of a mess.
I'm assuming that the change has something to do with upgrading from iPhoto '08 to iPhoto '09 when iLife '09 came out. Is there an easy way to change how the folders are named without having to go through each one or is there another way to accomplish the original task?
    Cheers.
    Andy.

The size of the package file (76Gb) is of no relevance to iPhoto's performance. iPhoto is good for 250,000 images so do you really need to split that Library? Further, as iPhoto can have only one Library open at a time that means that the vast majority of your pics will not be accessible without first quitting iPhoto and selecting a new Library. There is some inconvenience here.
Your method of going about this task is not really splitting a library, it's starting a bunch of new Libraries over from scratch. Your method
dragging and dropping from the Originals - <year> folder into iPhoto.
preserves no work that you have done on these photos: no edits, no metadata added in iPhoto, nothing. It's as though you have simply started over and these photos have never been on a computer before.
If you must split a Library then use iPhoto Library Manager. It will create libraries for you and allow you to move Events/Albums/Pics plus associated versions and metadata from Library to Library. At least this way you will preserve most of any work you've done on the pics.
Yes, since 09 the link between the Events in the iPhoto Window and the folders in the Library package is changed. Try accessing the files via the supported method: File -> Export and set the Kind to Original

  • Is there a save option on iPhoto? Sometimes iPhoto does not retain the name on a face I've added to a photo.

Sometimes iPhoto does not retain the name on a face I've added to a photo. I have 'added a face' then flipped to the next picture then back to that picture and the label has disappeared.

No.  It's supposed to be automatic.  You might try repairing the library's database and then see if it still crops up now and then. If that doesn't help try rebuilding it the same way.
Launch iPhoto with the Option+Command keys held down and select the database repair option in the rebild window:
Then the rebuild option if necessary.

  • How to deselect iPhoto as the default library viewer?

Hello everybody. I just got a Mac and I am thoroughly thrilled by iPhoto but I am already regretting setting the app as the default library viewer. I know I can find photos in the Finder by making iPhoto point me to the original file, but I just want to be able to see all my photos through finder. Under the folder names I choose. This issue is alarming also because I want to import 2000 photos from my old PC and I want them to be kept in the folders I have aready arranged. Again, I know I can view the originals (even though it's kinda weird the way they are organized in Finder now that iPhoto is the default library) and I know I can use  any image I want with other applications just by dragging them. But I just wanna see the file system. Any help will be deeply appreciated. Thanks for reading in advance

When you import a folder of  photos into iPhoto an Event will be created containing those photos with the same name as the folder had.  So you can keep all of your photos in the same folder grouping as you had previously.  You just can't have events inside other events as you do with folders.
However, you can add folders to the left hand pane of iPhoto and drag events into them to simuiplat the folder hierarchy you had on the PC.
Since you're looking for a folde/filer management system instead of a database digital asset management system iPhoto is not the application for you. There is a DAM application  that will do exactly what you want. It called Media Pro 1.  It's a professional DAM application.  It's what I use to manage my photos and then use iPhoto for special projects like books, calendars, slideshows, etc.

  • Iphoto 5.0.4 - Library cleanup?

I noticed today when I was doing a HD backup of my Mini that the iPhoto library files seems to have quite a few ._ files for the pictures as well as Thumbnails. Not every single pic has a thumbnail or a ._ file, so I dont know why some do and some don't. (I really wish OSX would get past the legacy ._ files already! Hoping Leopard's smart enough to do that).
Anyway, is there a way to get rid of those ._ and Thumbnail files safely? I'm assuming they aren't vital to the Library because every file would have one in that case when they were imported.
Thanks in advance! (And yes, I'm using iPhoto 5.0.4. Waiting for Leopard to get a new Macbook and move to iLife 08 then)
Message was edited by: Theo Lotz --- I just found out I posted in the '08 forum and there is an actual '05 forum as well. Admins - please move my post when you see this ... my bad.

    Theo:
I think those ._ files might image files that have the same file name as another file in a roll that they were moved to. iPhoto will add the _2 to it so they can exist in the same folder. This is so iPhoto can handle duplicate file names when digital cameras reset the file numbering back to 001 when cards are erased.
Do not move, rename or delete any file or folder inside the iPhoto library folder. That is the cardinal sin of iPhoto and will trash the library to the point that you may have to start over with a new library. And with iPhoto 5 that's a very big effort. Just access the files from the application and not go rummaging around the library folder.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Iphoto does not consistently use filename as title

I am importing photos from a Finder folder into iphoto (09). For some photos, the program automatically uses the file name as title; for other photos it does not assign any title. I can't make out any pattern. Since I gave the files names that have meaning, it would be very helpful if I could see them in iphoto. (If I look at the Extended Photo Info, the file name can be seen, but it does not show up in the regular view as titles.) Can anyone help? Thanks!

Have you looked at the files with other programs, for example Preview?
If you show the Inspector in Preview (Tools > Show Inspector) and open the IPTC and Exif tab, you can see the metadata tags of the photos. Do the image files in question have different IPTC or Exif tags set? Some cameras write empty captions to the photos, that might be read by iPhoto as empty titles.
