IPhoto 6 and Kodak EasyShare 5.2.2

Is anyone using the excellent software from Kodak called "EasyShare"? Latest version for Mac is 5.2.2 although version 6 is out for windoze and "soon" for Mac.
I like EasyShare because since Feb 2004 when I got my first Kodak Camera, I could import videos from the camera and stills and show both in the same slide show. iPhoto could not do that-- not sure if it can in version 6.
What I'd like to hear is the pros and cons of both if anyone out there has used both. I'm not sure I want to switch 9700 photos at 25 gb of size (including videos) from EasyShare to iPhoto-- but it may be an advantage to do this.
Thanks and regards,

Stephen:
I don't know if easy share can use keywords or manage the photos in subsets like albums, etc., but if you already have your photos in a pre-defined folder system and would like to keep them that way you can use iPhoto in it's alias mode (see iPhoto's Advanced preference section) and keep your original files right where they are. Any edits done on a photo will create an edited version, leaving the original untouched. One downside is that if you delete a photo from iPhoto's library it does not delete the original source file. That must be done by you via the Finder. Here are some Tutorials on using iPhoto's alias mode that may give you an idea about it. With iPhoto's alias system you can use both EasyShare and iPhoto on the same set of source files. But if you edit a file from EasyShare or the Finder it will not update the thumbnail in iPhoto.
Also check out the iLife/iPhoto page at Apple's site to get a good idea of the many organizational virtues of iPhoto. As I said I'm totally unfamilar with the Kodak application so can't compare the two. Good luck.

  • IPhoto and Kodak EasyShare software

I find myself using Kodak's EasyShare software a lot more than iPhoto-- especially since I can click on the slide show and see both photos and videos in the same slide show--
BUT with both programs, my photo/video folders are getting huge-- over 25 gb. How can I put "8000 of my photos" (out of 9000) into another folder on an external hard drive and keep the last 1000, but then at a later time access all the photos (combine them again on 1 hard drive) without having the software show a "?" on the photo and thus having to relocate each photo individually... i.e.--> how to backup the folder, but then add new photos to the smaller "new" main folder, then recombine these without having lost any pictures or information...
This must be a concern of others-- any comments on both iPhoto and if possible Kodak EasyShare as well-- THANKS!

    Stephen:
You can do that with iPhoto 6 but not V5. iPhoto 6 has an option to import just alias files into the library and leave the full sized files where ever you want. Then you can change the preferences back to normal and import the full sized image files of those you want on the boot drive into the library. OR, keep them all on an external HD. Here are some Tutorials describing how to convert to an alias based system.

What update are you referring to?  If you do a search for "Kodak" in the iPhoto community you'll find numerous posts regarding problems with Kodak cameras.
So far there's no known fix.  The best workaround is to use a card reader with the memory card of the camera.

  • Iphoto and Kodak gallery

I'm trying to upload my photos through Kodak gallery's new beta version. When I find my iphoto folder it is now available to be highlighted? i.e I can't chose photos from within.

  • Iphoto and Kodak Gallery Plug in or Ofoto Express

I have read multiple iphoto threads about using other upload programs and I use Kodak Gallery.
Does anyone know what the difference is between using either the Kodak Gallery Iphoto Plug in or using the Ofoto Express software from Kodak?
Is one preferred over the other?

I figured out to just use the plug in to upload directly to kodak without having to export out of iphoto then upload with ofoto express.

  • QUICKTIME 7 and KODAK EASYSHARE CAMERA - Incompatibility

Hi, newbie so sorry if already covered this.
My KODAK camera (V610) plays .mov files perfectly on quicktime 6 that came with the camera. I had to install Quicktime 7 to get my IPOD to work and now the .mov files dont play (get sound but no picture). Have tried to uninstall and reinstall but no joy. HELP

kodak support is very helpful, did you ask them if their software has an update?

  • Cannot load photos onto iphoto from kodak easyshare

I previously was able to load my photos onty iphoto (version 2), now that I have connected a new external hard drive, iphoto recognizes the camera and the photos to be imported, but after it starts to import them a message comes up saying "cannot import photo..." and asks me to continue or stop. Help please

An easier way to upload your pics , would be to disable launching iPhoto when you camera is connected. and use a 2 step process to upload pics on an empty folder and then to iPhoto.
    - Do you see the camera icon on the desktop?
let me know if you want to know more!

  • Organizing iPhoto / Kodak Easyshare

    Hi!
I have many zillion photos. I use iPhoto, and Kodak Easy Share, hence some are duplicates. I'd like to get control of the situation, and store them in one place. What do you all do? AND where the heck are the photos from iPhoto? I do find folders. none with names of albums, and they're in all kinds of places (i.e. in my user folder, etc.)
Can someone help me get control of these photo! I plan to be more organized in '07!
    Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. iPhoto keeps the image files in its iPhoto Library folder that's located in your Pictures folder. Inside the Originals folder there will be subfolders corresponding to the rolls in iPhoto.
If you have selected the option in iPhoto's Advanced preferences to not import the photos when importing the original files will then be where they were when you imported them.
As far as duplicates, there are two applications, iPhoto Diet and Duplicate Annihilator that can cull out duplicate image files as long as they have the same file name. I do recommend, however, that you backup your library folder before proceeding just in case the results are not what you expected.
With that in mind you could import all of your photos into iPhoto and the cull out the duplicates. You will find, however, that when importing from the HD iPhoto will give you a warning regarding duplicates and let you make a decision as to import them or not.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application, iPhoto dB file backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Help with Kodak Easyshare v1253 camera

I am a new Mac owner and I recently got a new Kodak Easyshare v1253 digital camera. iPhoto doesn't seem to recognize it. I've tried installing the Kodak software and the firmware for the camera with no luck.
Does anyone know if this camera is compatible with iPhoto '08? Does anyone have one who could tell me how to get it to connect? I'd really like to get my pictures off it!
    Thanks!

I have that same camera but iPhoto was able to recognize it after downloading the firmware and Kodak EasyShare update. Does the computer recognize your camera at all, through another program like Image Capture? If so, then you might just need to go to iPhoto's preferences and check off the box about opening iPhoto (or any image application you prefer, like Photoshop) when the camera's plugged in. Good luck!
I seem to have the opposite problem on my system-- iPhoto now thinks my camera is always connected, even when it's unplugged and sitting in my bag.

  • Iphoto won't import photos from Kodak EasyShare Camera

I have alsways been able to import photos from my canon camera directly into iphoto. I just purchased a Kodak Easyshare Camera. When I hook it up to my computer, it won't import the photos. The camera does come with it's own EasyShare Software - but I really don't want to import it into my computer. I want the photos to import directly into iphoto library. My Canon Camera still imports into the library. Help.

    sunnydays:
Does System Profiler recognize the camera when it's connected? What version of iPhoto and Quicktime are you at. If not the latest then I suggest you update to 6.0.0 and 7.2 respectively. I'd also update to 10.4.10 via the COMBO updater followed by a repair of disk permissions.
Do you have iPhoto erase the memory card after each upload? If so, I strongly recommend against it as I've seen too many reports of incomplete uploads and complete erasures. It's safer to have the camera reformat the card after the upload.

  • IPhoto '08 no longer prints to Kodak EasyShare printer dock series 3

I installed iLife '08 last week. Used iPhoto '08 for the first time today. It will not longer print to the Kodak EasyShare printer dock series 3 photo printer. I get the message that the "Cartridge and tray type do not match."
I called Kodak. They have never seen this error message before. They had me update the EasyShare software because it is connected to iPhoto in the background when it comes to printing. Everything prints perfectly from the EasyShare software but it still will not print from iPhoto '08. It did from the previous versions.
Kodak believes that it is an iPhoto problem.
Any suggestions? Anyone else have this problem yet. I didn't find any when I did a search.
It's kind of silly to export a photo from iPhoto to EasyShare just to print.
    thanks...

I was having the same problem with my Kodak Photo Printer 300, except that I could not print from ANY app other than Preview (I have iPhoto '08 also, but I never used the printer with an older version so I don't know if the problem happened after I upgraded iLife). I was able to work around the problem by using "4x6" as the paper size instead of "L-size." Hope this helps.

  • Iphoto and image capture not recognizing kodak camera

    Hello!
I am having trouble uploading photos from my Kodak easyshare dx4530 to iphoto 6.0.5. This is a new thing as I have uploaded many times before. The camera is not recognized by iphoto or by image capture when the usb is connected. The camera and usb work fine when connected to my husband's ibook G4.
I tried moving the preferences to the trash (com.apple.iphoto.plist and com.apple.imagecaptureapp.plist) and this did not work. There is only 1 account on the computer and it is the admin account.
Thanks in advance for any help offered.

    pb35:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Is the camera recognized by System Profiler? Did you run any updates before this problem began? A first cut would be a reinstall of the 10.4.9 COMBO updater followed by a permissions repair.
I'd create a second, non-admin, very vanilla account and see if the camera is recognized there by iPhoto or IC. A second plain account is a very good troubleshooting tool to see if the problem is with what's been added to the primary account.

  • IPhoto won't import from Kodak EasyShare C300

How do I find out if my new Kodak EasyShare C300 is compatible with iPhoto? If so, how do I get the program to recognize the pictures? In the left margin, the program lists the camera, so it seems to recognize it. When there are pictures on the camera and iPhoto 5 opens, the message says nothing to import. Help! I can use the Kodak software, but I'd prefer iPhoto.
    Al

Since I don't want all my photos in iPhoto, I use Apple's Image Capture to do an initial screen on the images before uploading to the computer. If you want to try it as a workaround for your problem, open it in the Applications folder and set your Preferences to always open when a camera is attached (also opens when you put the card/card reader into a USB slot).
You can import/duplicate the photos in iPhoto if you want a backup, or you can "import" a link to the originals in their original folder.

  • I have a large kodak easyshare library, what is the best way to transfer them into iPhoto ?

I have about 5k pictures in the kodak easyshare software system on a dell laptop - what is the best way to transfer or import them into iPhoto on my iMac ? any help will be greatly appreciated...

Simply, export the data from this esy share system to standard formats like jpeg, making sure to preserve all metadata on the way. How to do that? YOu'll need to post on a Kodak forum I'm afraid.
Then copy the files to the Mac and import them.

  • Import captions for kodak easyshare into iphoto

I have thousands of photos in Kodak Easyshare on my old laptop and would like to get them into iPhoto on my new one while retaining the caption information. Is there a macro or some assistance for doing this...some code that can read the caption into from an Easyshare backup and import it into iPhoto?

I'm no programmer but I know a bit of UNIX/Linux scripting and I'm happy to say that I successfully exported my captions from EasyShare into the EXIF description field which is used in Picasa.  Before you get too excited, this is messy and you need know a bit about UNIX/Linux if you want to try this, but here we go...
The captions are stored in the EasyShare.me file which should be in Library/Application Support/Kodak EasyShare.  Copy this file to the desktop.  Then go to Terminal, cd to Desktop, and execute this crazy command:
    cat EasyShare.me | LC_CTYPE=C tr "\000" \| | sed "s/|0|/~/g" | sed "s/int4/~/g" | LC_CTYPE=C tr '~' '\n' | grep "|JPG|1|." | awk -F\| -v OFS=\| '{print $(NF-5),$NF}' | grep -v "|$" > captions.txt
    In order, this command:
    changes binary nulls to pipes
changes pipe-0-pipe and the phrase int4 to newline
find only lines with |JPG|1| with some characters after that string
get the 4th from the last column and the last column
get lines where the captions is not blank
saves it all to a file named captions.txt
The key here is nulls are the delimiter in the EasyShare.me file and that the caption is always in a string that goes:
    filename
    column that we ignore
    column that we ignore
    JPG
    1
    caption
    0
So we replace 0 with newline as well as int4 which just shows up everyone and makes our lines shorter.  Then we searched for lines with the JPG then 1 then something and we know the caption is the last column and the filename is five columns before the last column.
Now I strongly recommend that you manually review captions.txt.  The problem with the crazy format of EasyShare.me is that we can get only get the filename without the path and without the suffix.  So if you had two copies of the same filename both with captions it will show up twice in captions.txt.  Even worse if you have different photos with the same name (i.e. you bought a new camera and it started over with DSCF1000 for a second time) then there is no way to tell which one is which.  And the script which is below has similar problems because it updates all photos with the same filename with same caption.  If you have this problem, you will need to do a lot of this manually but you can still save a bunch of time updating the photos where you have only one version.
Now we have the captions and the files to update so we need to do the update of the EXIF field.  To do this, you must install Phil Harvey's ExifTool from www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool.
Then you can write a shell script to loop through captions.txt and update the description using exiftool.  The following script is rudimentary and has no error checking nor logging.  I also couldn't figure out the spaces so I just replaced them with ~ and then replaced back later.  But it works.  If you are a real programmer you will certainly want to improve it.
    Good luck,
    Cabe
