IPhoto 6 and RAW files a hint of what's to come?

Anyone notice that iPhoto 6 can send a raw file to an external editor?
Set up an external editor in the preferences and then go to advanced and set the preference to send raw to external editor.
Choose photoshop as your external editor and the image is opened in ACR. However, once you have done this there is no way to save it so that iPhoto recognizes the changes. You must save it and then import the tiff, jpeg, or psd. The images are not tied together as original and edited version. To get that, must allow core image to convert the image and then send that to photoshop. This is half the solution needed to have great Photoshop integration.
I would think (hope) that this is an indicator of things to come. If Aperture gets the ability to send a raw original (master) out to photoshop and then "import" the resulting file (tiff, psd) as a "second" master (some thing iPhoto currently can't do), well, that would be progress.
We could then choose which raw processing engine to use. Choose apples and you save on space, choose Adobe and you get ACR quality at the cost of a BIG tiff or psd in your library. I do think it is way to much to ask that Aperture understand Adobes sidecar files or instructions imbedded in a dng.
Additionally, iPhoto 6 can be set to use "external" files instead of coping everything into the library. It does make a full size jpeg of raws at import time, so space becomes an issue quickly.
And, oh yea, this is not an opportunity to start yet one more flame apple thread, we've heard it all and it has grow tiring.

This has worked since iPhoto 5 but just a slightly different set of options. You could always for the first edit, open the RAW file in any editor (as RAW). However, and as you have stated, you can't directly save it back to iPhoto. Aperture kind of reversed this a bit by not allowing you to directly open the RAW in an external editor.

  • IPhoto and raw files

I bought my iMac g5 mainly for managing and editing (using the Gimp) my digital photos and I'm beginning to regret it.
I always shoot in raw (D70), but when I double click a picture in iPhoto it opens up a jpeg version (converted with who knows what settings) in the Gimp.
Surely if I click on a raw file the program to which the file is sent should get a raw file and not some converted version?
In fact it is a little wierder than this; if I drag a raw file onto the Gimp in the toolbar it opens up the raw file in Gimp (actually using the ufraw converter). However, if the raw file has ever been double-clicked, then Gimp opens up with iPhoto's jpeg.
There may be a setting somewhere to change this aberrent behaviour, but I haven't found it yet.
    Anyone have an idea?
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Don't regret buying the Mac. The problem is simply the iPhoto is not the software you should be using. I'm still working out what I want to do. I think it's going to work like this....
Use the software that came with the camera to download the image data. Store the images into folders with folder names that give the date and place or subject. (I will use either Canon or Nikon software depending on the camera.)
Use "shoebox" to tag and index the images. Shoebox allows much more sophisticatd tagging than iPhoto. For example tag the subject "Nicholas" and location "Los Angeles" and then a querry for "family" in "California" will find the image.
Shoebox, like iPhoto can launch an editor
The Editor I like is Gimp. Clean interface and it is fast.
however I'm keeping an open mind about PS.
I just started using the Mac too My other computer runs Linux. (Linux and Darwin are very much alike.) The image
data will continue to live on the Linux computer's RAID system.
I will import cropped and color corrected JPEG images into iPhoto as needed when I want to make slide shows and books and DVDs to give away.
I intend to re-evaluate this after iPhoto 6 is released in a January.
iPhoto RAW conversion system is just not targeted at the small minority of people who in the film era could see the difference between (say) Agfa's "Portrait 160" and Fugicolor 200. or between Velia and Kodachrome. Apple was just not thinking of people like that when they devaloped thier RAW
software. They were attempting to address the larger mass consummer market.

I recently purchased a Canon 7D and the RAW files are "not recognized". I shot RAW with a Nikon D60 and had no issues getting the images into iPhoto. Is there some sort of plugin or patch?
    Thanks in advance!

The D610 needs ACR 8.3 so you are easily covered there.  I am not entirely clear on the process you are using the bring the files onto your hard drive.  The safest way is to simply bring all the NEF files into a folder on your hard drive, then find them with bridge and open from there.
If still stuck, open Photoshop, and go Help > About plugins > Camera RAW and check that 8.7 installed OK.

  • Photo Stream only supports JPEG, PNG, TIFF and RAW files.

I'm using Panasonic LX3 with its RAW format (a supported RAW format since sometimes with iPhoto '09 already)
When I choose to Photo Stream my images after import with iPhoto '11, it says "Photo Stream only supports JPEG, PNG, TIFF and RAW files."
My files are RAW formats so why can't I photo stream it?!
Is there something I can get around or need to wait for Apple to support this?!

You don;t have a preset set. What you are seeing is normal behavior when importing Raw files.
What you see at first is the camera produced JPG preview imbedded in the Raw file. Aperture puts this up while it decodes the actual Raw data. This JPG has all the special settings and enhancements set on the camera and is basically the image that would be produced if you were shooting JPG.
As a rule none of the settings on the camera (apart from the basics) are applied to the Raw file though some of the newer cameras have settings that could affect the data stored in the Raw file.
This is a often asked question by those just getting into Raw and you can search the discussions here for other answers to this question.
Given the capability of today's cameras, especially the high-end ones, a lot of users have decided to abandon Raw as unnecessary  if they are happy with the images the camera produces. It's all a matter of personal needs.

  • JPG and RAW files are not grouped together.

I am finding that my RAW and JPG files are not grouped together.  They show up on the Grid View as JPG for the JPG file and RAW + JPG for the NEF(RAW) file.  This does not seem to be consistent through out the folder.  Some of the pictures are grouped together and others are not.  The ones that are not grouped together have been auto-stacked and then unstacked.  I am not sure if this is what caused the seperation of JPG and RAW files.  I did try to take a picture that I had auto-stacked it  and then remove it and it did not sepearate.  The "Treat JPG files next to raw files as seperate photos" option is turned off, like it is in my Lightroom 3.

This is what I'm talking about:
    Show subfolders are on:
    In windows Explorer:
    In the Import Dialog:
    Where are the files?
If I click on the Folder 2014_12_14... all the files from all folders will populate.

I have my camera (Canon 5D Mark 2) set to take both JPEG Large and Raw files with each shot. I uploaded the images from the card to my Pro (Aperture 3) and while the import info said 1500 images were uploaded, I can't find the RAW images.  Aperture put about 700 images in an untitled project folder, but all the images are the JPEGs.  What am I missing?

Have you checked your "Import" settings for "Raw&Jpeg" pairs in the "Import" panel?
You can set Aperture to import raw, jpeg, or raw&jpeg.
If you imported Raw&Jpeg, but have set Aperture to use the Jpeg as original, you will see the imported image as Jpeg image, not as a raw image, even if the raw has also been imported. You can switch between Raw and Jpeg originals for selected images from the Photos menu:
Photos > Use Raw as original.

  • Iphoto and itunes files disappeared when i upgraded to os mavericks. How can i access these files?

iphoto and itunes files disappeared when i upgraded to os mavericks. How can i retrieve these files? Time machine is not opening my backup files on an external Lacie HD.

Apple keeps books for a short time (used to be 40 days. I've not seen a recent time frame)
    What version did you have?
Books do nor exist except in the iPhoto database so you can not "find" a book vista TM. You restore a previous library (be sure NOT to overwrite your current library) and switch to it

  • Adding keywords to Iphoto and Finder file

I am scanning photos and adding keywords to photos in Iphoto. The original file is in Finder. Is there a way to add keywords to both the photo in Iphoto and the File in the Finder at the same time.
The Finder files are backup in case Iphoto crashes or I do something stupid and loss my photos.
    Thanks

I am not sure what you mean by a referenced library.
a referenced library (the advanced option "copy imported items to the iPhoto library") has been unchecked?
Preferences/ Advanced/ Copy items to the Iphoto library ( the box has a check mark)
You then have a managed library so your photos are all copied into the iPhoto library. While there is no problem in keeping an extra copy of your original photos outside of iPhoto as long as it is on the same disk as the iPhoto library it is not a backup - any disk or computer failure will affect both equally - to have a backup it must be on different physical media

  • Can iPhoto process RAW files?

Love to shoot digital photos.  Can iPhoto process RAW files without conversion to JPEG or problems?
Or do I need to purchase Aperture?
Running OSX 10.6.8   2.66 GHZ Intel Duo Core  8 Gigs RAM only--enough for using Aperture?

iPhoto, yes Aperture, yes.  Read here > iPhoto '11: Edit RAW-format photos
But the minimum requirements for iPhoto 11 and Aperture are OS X v10.7.5.
You would have to upgrade to v10.7 Lion in order to run either iPhoto or Aperture.
Lion can be purchased from Apple Customer Support at 800-767-2775.
OR, if your Mac meets v10.8 Mountain Lion requirements >  System requirements for OS X Mountain Lion
You can upgrade directly from v10.6.8 to v10.8 Mountain Lion. iPhoto and Aperture both are compatible with v10.8.
Instructions for upgrading to Mountain Lion v10.8 >  Apple - Upgrade your Mac to OS X Mountain Lion.

  • Can IPhoto accept raw files?

    Can IPhoto accept raw files?

So you just needed me to furnish you with a more thorough explanation.
Why did you not just say that, Terence?
I'm truly grateful for anyone's help and advice, I really am.
But surely instead of the above 'statement', why not just point out which information you required?
Anyhow, I'm on Snow Leopard. I'm not sure which version of iPhoto, but it's the most current version for Snow Leopard. My library is 16,588 images. I have around 256GB free space on the HD.
The thing is, though, I have had absolutely no problem with it up until last week when I added about 100 PEF images from my Pentax K-x and then everything ground, literally, to a halt.
When I import the raw images to Image Capture or Photoshop they're fine, no speed issues.
Thanks for everyone, including Terence, who offers advice.

  • How to have my Jpg and RAW files in version sets (PSE10)

I take both jpg and RAW files on my camera so that most of the time I am pleased with the jpg and do little editing, but some of the time I need to really work on a photo which is where the RAW file comes in handy. In my photo well I have 2 of each picture displayed ie the jpg and RAW. How can I get it so only the jpg is displayed and the RAW either hidden or as a version set collapsed? Having 2 of each photo makes the photo well look untidy and full of duplicates.
    Help appreciated.

Highlight the two photos (using Ctrl+click), right-click on one of them and select "Stack...Stack Selected Photos".
