IPhoto 6 and raw format

I just recently bought a new DSLR, a pentax D100, which is listed as a supported raw format with Tiger 10.4.11. I have all of the current updates installed for camera raw support, but I still can not open any of the raw images in iPhoto or preview. I have even converted my raw images to DNG format using photoshop elements 4.0, and they still won't open. I'm pretty much to the point of giving up on iPhoto all together, but I like using iPhoto for cataloging and such, that and this is just really irritating me. The fact that everything I have read here on this discussion forum and on all apple support pages says I should be able to open these files with iPhoto. Any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.

I use Adobe Photoshop CS6 to edit Raw photos. If you dont have a huge budget try Gimp for Mac OSX. Gimp has many function like Photshop, the free version works well. http://www.gimp.org

  • IPhoto 8 and Raw

    Hi everyone,
I recently took 600+ Raw photos (Nikon D70...roughly 3.85 gig of pictures)and imported them into iPhoto 8 as RAW photos.
I understand that it (iPhoto 8) automatically converts them into jpegs and leaves the raw photos untouched, but it is REALLY bogging down my system.
What I would like to know is this...as iPhoto has already converted the RAW photos to jpegs, and that is what I am working on in iPhoto (jpegs, NOT RAW), can I simply burn a CD with all of the jpegs that are in iphoto, delete all of those photos from iphoto, and then go through and Delete all of the original RAW images (I already have them backed up on a DVD) and then reimport just the jpegs into iphoto?
My goal is to delete all of the RAW photos from the computer, and leave only jpegs in iPhoto. If I ever need to use the RAW photos...for example if I am editing them in PS, I can just put the DVD in and pull it from there.
Also, is there a way for me to do this in the future...i.e. use iPhoto to convert the RAWS to jpegs, and only import them...not to import the RAW photos?
I'm guessing that the RAW images are what is bogging down iphoto, not the number of pictures (I have about 5,000 in iphoto already.)
    Thanks,
    Tom

Setup iPhoto to use Photoshop as the editor of choice in iPhoto's General preferences pane. Next, go to iPhoto's Advanced preference pane and check to the box "Use RAW when editing in external editor". Now you don't have to find the RAW file and move it to the desktop to edit. HOWEVER, you will have to save the edited file on the Desktop and import as a new photo.
If you occasionally just want to use PS to edit the jpg version see the following:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds

  • IMac and Raw Format

    Hello everyone:
I have and old iMac (the white one), upgraded with Mac OS X 10.6.8.
The computer works perfectly, I´m a photographer and still works with Photoshop and with large files like CR2 (Raw files).
Recently I bought a new camera: Canon powershot G15 and I can´t see the thumbnails in my Finder, neither in my iPhoto´11, but I can see them in Adobe Photoshop CS6.
In order to solve this problem, I have downloaded the RAWCameraUpdate4 from the Apple Support website, wich says that support the G15 raw files, but when I tried to install it, it appears a window taht says: this software is not compatible with your system.
Because of that, I was thinking about update my OS X to  Mountain Lion. I´ve been reading the technical specifications and my computer fulfills with the general requirements, but also it is writen that the supported models are iMac (Mid 2007 or newer).
My iMac was bought in decembrer 2006, I kown it´s old, but it runs perfectly, as I said before.
    So finally, here´s my question:
Is to buy a new mac the only option that I have to solve my problem? Or maybe is it possible to update my system to Mountain Lion?
Thank and sorry for my english mistakes

  • IPhoto selectively imports RAW format photos

First up - I am a complete Mac novice - my PC blew up a month ago and I thought "what the heck" and bought an iMac instead of a new PC. I have transferred all of my files over to the Mac and am very happy in general. Until I ran into this problem with iPhoto.
I have been slowly importing my photos into iPhoto over the past week or so, and everything has gone smoothly up to about 13,000 pictures.  I only have about 2,000 to go. I even managed to synch them with my AppleTv so can now watch them on my television.
However when I now import some of my photos (all are in RAW format) some of the photos for one photo shoot come in just fine, but some appear as white blank tiles. Note that in Finder I can see the preview of the photos just fine - but whenever I try to import them into iPhoto they just turn up as blank white squares.
I've tried lots of things to try and fix this, including:
    1. Doing all the rebuild things on iPhoto database by holding Cmd and Ctrl when launching iPhoto - didn't work
    2. Reinstalling the iPhoto database form a time capsule backup that i'd taken before the problem flared up and trying again to import - didn't work.
When I go to edit the photo in iPhoto - a grey triangle with an exclamation mark appears and it says "image cannot be edited, the original format is not supported" - but how can this be true when some of the other photos (in exactly the same format) are showing just fine.
The photos were taken on a Canon 500D and as far as I can gather, this has been a supported RAW format for quite a while.
My Mac version is OSX 10.9.5 (I've no idea if that's a Lion or a Leopard or whatever) and the iPhoto version is 9.5.1 (902.17).
Any help would be much appreciated - and please - be patient with me if at all possible - as I really don't know my way around a Mac at all.
    Many thanks
    SiFiWiFi

Terence - ok - not good news for me I'm afraid - Graphic Converter doesn't like the image either - it didn't show on the preview there and doesn't show up in the main program. I guess my images are corrupted beyond repair?
To be fair - my PC did die - and I've had no issues with reducing any other files - so I've gotten away pretty lightly if all I've lost in that process are some images (albeit of a best mate's wedding).
Is there anything else I can try, or are we pretty much done here?
I really appreciate both your help and your patience walking me through the options, even if it hasn't led to a positive conclusion.

  • Black and white pictures and raw format

I started to use raw format. however, when i shoot pictures in black and white and download them to bridge, they get converted to color pioctures. Does anybody know why and what to do about this?

    In addition to this,
Raw is Raw, meaning it captures all the data your sensor was capable of. It creates also a jpeg preview extracted in camera from this Raw file to show at your camera viewer and as thumbnails on your computer.
You need a Raw converter to translate the Raw data to a picture in RGB (demosaicing they call this process).
And every setting you choose in camera for shooting is just added as metadata like all Raw settings in the Raw converter are added as metadata to reflect the changes you have made. If you want you can delete those data and start all over again with the original file because this stays as it was taken when shot, regardless all earlier applied settings.
Bridge uses Adobe Camera Raw for converting (demosaicing) the files and has it own code like others have their way of converting. It is possible that the vendor software delivered with your camera is capable of showing the in camera settings right away but then like Curt already stated it is just a reflection of your settings, the original is still the color image you have shot.
There are lots of ways (and far better then in camera setting) to convert your color image to black and white. Just start a google search for some video tutorials and choose the one you like best for your workflow.

  • IPhoto '11 and RAW/JPEG handling (good/bad) ?

I've upgraded to iPhoto '11 and discovered (don't know if it's a new feature) that iPhoto handles RAW extremely well. I can view RAW files and edit etc in a smooth manner - which is great.
Actually it's so great that i've started shooting photos in RAW only (so i don't get duplicates in iPhoto when importing RAW/JPEG) - but is it a good idea to shoot/import RAW in iPhoto only? (and skip the JPEG file).
If it's better to shoot/import both RAW and JPEG, how do you guys handle the identical pictures (RAW/JPEG) in iPhoto?
Finally, if i only have RAW in iPhoto, how do i 'export' the RAW picture? If i drag and drop the picture to desktop, RAW is automatically converted to JPEG (which is great in 99% of the times).
Hope to hear some of you guys ideas regarding this subject.

When you import a Raw to iPhoto it automatically creates a jepg preview of the file. Why? Because you cannot do anything with a Raw: you cannot print it, use it a slideshow and so on. However, with this preview you can work with the photo immediately.
Shooting in Raw+Jpeg is a bit pointless as you have this automatic preview anyway.
if i only have RAW in iPhoto, how do i 'export' the RAW picture?
File -> Export and set the Kind to Original
Dragging to the Desktop accesses only the latest version of the photo.

  • Hasselblad and Raw Format .FFF not supported

I try to use a Aperture 1.0.1 with my professional Raw Format from Hasselblad Camera, but nothing....
My Photographer use this Hardware and It is a professional solution for inside Spot....
    Can you help me?

Unfortunately, you'll need to import from Aperture in TIFF or JPEG format from your Hassie.
The list of currently supported RAW formats is here:

Apple has a feedback page, it's worthwhile for you to note your need for your Hasselblad back.

  • Lr5 and raw format importing

Why won't lr5 import my raw format photos from my nikon d600?

When I try to import I get the message "The files are not recognized by the RAW format support in Lightroom". My Nikon d600 is on the list of supported cameras. Just updated to LR5 last night. It should work. I'm thinking I might need to reload the Nikon Transfer software? Thoughts?

  • Iphoto 6 and RAW

My question is in two parts:
1)Iphoto 6 doesn't download RAW images from my CF card slot on my printer, so I manually import them. Is there a better way?
    2) I know that altered images are kept in a separate directory to the originals, but how can I incoporate them into Iphoto (import doesn't seem to work) so that I can from there, upload using Iweb?
    Thanks for your time.
    Doug

    Doug,
This is a limitation with the way that iPhoto handles RAW files. When you send the RAW to Photoshop and then save the edited RAW it must create a new file type, such as jpeg, tiff, or some Adobe format. This makes your edit a "Save As" and not a straight "Save." There is no way to have this go automatically back into your iPhoto library. You must do your Save As to another location, like the Desktop, then import into iPhoto as a separate file. (As for all those files already inside your library folder - they are not recognized by the database. You should drag them out of there, and be very careful not to disturb the files that iPhoto does recognize.) There is no way to link the edit back to its original RAW file. This is not true if you edit your file inside iPhoto, but then you miss out on the handy Photoshop RAW editor.
    Regards.

  • IPhoto 6 and RAW files a hint of what's to come?

Anyone notice that iPhoto 6 can send a raw file to an external editor?
Set up an external editor in the preferences and then go to advanced and set the preference to send raw to external editor.
Choose photoshop as your external editor and the image is opened in ACR. However, once you have done this there is no way to save it so that iPhoto recognizes the changes. You must save it and then import the tiff, jpeg, or psd. The images are not tied together as original and edited version. To get that, must allow core image to convert the image and then send that to photoshop. This is half the solution needed to have great Photoshop integration.
I would think (hope) that this is an indicator of things to come. If Aperture gets the ability to send a raw original (master) out to photoshop and then "import" the resulting file (tiff, psd) as a "second" master (some thing iPhoto currently can't do), well, that would be progress.
We could then choose which raw processing engine to use. Choose apples and you save on space, choose Adobe and you get ACR quality at the cost of a BIG tiff or psd in your library. I do think it is way to much to ask that Aperture understand Adobes sidecar files or instructions imbedded in a dng.
Additionally, iPhoto 6 can be set to use "external" files instead of coping everything into the library. It does make a full size jpeg of raws at import time, so space becomes an issue quickly.
And, oh yea, this is not an opportunity to start yet one more flame apple thread, we've heard it all and it has grow tiring.

This has worked since iPhoto 5 but just a slightly different set of options. You could always for the first edit, open the RAW file in any editor (as RAW). However, and as you have stated, you can't directly save it back to iPhoto. Aperture kind of reversed this a bit by not allowing you to directly open the RAW in an external editor.

  • RAW format compatibility with iPhoto

I am looking for a new camera that supports RAW. It is my understanding each camera manufacturer uses a different file extension on their RAW images implying there is a difference between the file formats. The list that Apple supplies for cameras that can be used with iPhoto is not up to date as many newer cameras do not show up on their list.
Would it not be safe to assume that if, for example, Canon comes out with a new camera with RAW format support their file type which is .CRW would automatically work with iPhoto. The same would be for Nikon, Olympus and the rest. If the new camera uses the same file extension as one of the older cameras by the same manufacturer on Apples compatibility list the new camera will be compatible.
Here is the list of extensions I found by manufacturer.
    .raf (Fuji)
    .crw .cr2 (Canon)
    .kdc .dcr (Kodak)
    .mrw (Minolta)
    .nef (Nikon)
    .orf (Olympus)
    .dng (Adobe)
    .ptx .pef (Pentax)
    .arw .srf (Sony)
    .x3f (Sigma)
    .erf (Epson)
    .mef .mos (Mamiya)
    .raw (Panasonic)
    .r3d (Red)

This document should answer most of your questions: Digital camera RAW formats supported by Mac OS X 10.5.
Oops, didn't see that you were still using Tiger. This document may be more appropriate in that case: iPhoto 6: Supported RAW format cameras. There may be a Tiger doucment like the one for Leopard but I wasn't able to find it just now.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Support for RAW format for Leica cameras

Does anyone know when iPhoto might provide RAW support for the Leica D-LUX 3 digital camera?

Larry, thx for the clarity. I didn't realize asking about future directions was a no-no here.
I since found an Apple document indicating support for the Leica D-LUX 3 and RAW format in an OS 10.4.10(?) release. I think I'll have to drag my Mac to the camera store, take a few pics with the D-LUX 3, attempt to sync and see if/how the RAW images come over, and then advise here on if it worked with OS 10.5.2 and iPhoto '08.

  • Is there a patch for Preview and iPhoto for the new Canon RAW format yet?

I recently purchased a Canon 6D, and I was surprised to find out that my Preview and iPhoto does not read the new Canon RAW codec. It's been out for almost 7 or 8 months. All my software is current. I have a 2007 MacBook Pro with iOS 10.7.5 The software that Canon supplied is terribly slow when it comes to importing the CR2 files and exporting them as jpegs. iPhoto can import my Canon 40D CR2 photos and spit out the jpeg proofs super quick. So, does anyone know of any software updates that I may have overlooked regarding iPhoto or Preview. I can't upgrade to Mavericks, as my computer will not support it. I have a feeling I may be SOL, but thanks for any help!

10.7.5 is not an iOS, it is a Mac OS X.  And no, it is not current.  10.9.3 is current.  As for your 6D, here's the RAW by operating system support:
Mac OS X v10.6: Supported digital camera RAW formats
OS X Lion: Supported digital camera RAW formats- your operating system
OS X Mountain Lion: Supported digital camera RAW formats10.8
OS X Mavericks: Supported digital camera RAW formats10.9 support
Turns out the 6D is supported for 10.7.  You need the RAW compatibility update 4.0.3:
    Digital Camera RAW Compatibility 4.03
And the 40d is natively supported by 10.7.

  • How can I copy pics back to the RAW format after loading in iPhoto?

I downloaded pictures in the RAW format with no problem. Afterwards, I deleted them from my memory stick and am now trying to copy them to a jump drive in their original RAW format, but iPhoto converts them to JPEG. How can I get them back to the RAW format when copying to an external source?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Select the pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and set the Kind to Original.
Iphoto does not convert the files to JPEG. Your RAW is protected. What happens is that iPhoto makes a JPEG preview of the file. IF you drag from the iPhoto Window or export with the Kind: Current you get that Preview. Exporting as Original will get the RAW.

  • IPhoto 6.0.6 and RAW images - compatible??

I've taken some RAW images with my Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3. I thought I had read somewhere that I would be able to import RAW images into iphoto 6, although it wouldn't be exactly straightforward, but now can't find the instructions. Can I do this? I have an imac G5 PowerPC.

Yes iPhoto works with Raw images from supported cameras. But no, not with yours.
The Raw format is specific to each camera model. The Raw produced by your LX3 is not the same as produced by any other camera - Lumix or not. Therefore support has to be added for each camera individually.
Let Apple know you want your camera supported: iPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback
Note: there is zero chance of v6 iPhoto being able to work with the LX3 Raws. It hasn't been updated since 2006, and I don;t see them adding features now.
