Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
At a wager, I'll guess that the landscape are the only one's affected as your wife has renamed folders in the Modified folder, and these pics have been auto-rotated. The reason you're catching glimpses of the pics is because they are cached images. In doesn't really matter, in any event, as if you want to use iPhoto you will first have to recreate the library.
Remember: It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss.
iPhoto is not an image viewer, it's a photo organiser, that is a database. Like any database it requires you to manipulate the data - in this case your pictures - within the app and not via a back door such as the Finder. The good news is that everything you need to do can be done via the iPhoto Window - including adding descriptions to folders names.
If you bear this in mind, iPhoto will work very reliably.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same film rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual rolls to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
My guess is that you want to apply descriptions to folders to make it easier to find specific pics? There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
Then there's rolls. Every import you make creates a roll folder in the iPhoto Library Folder / Originals Folder. In the iPhoto Window switch to Rolls View (View -> Film Rolls). This corresponds exactly to the roll folders. You can move pics between rolls, create rolls, edit them, rename them - as long as you do it via the iPhoto Window. Check out the info pane - the little 'i' button, lower left. The Name and Date fields are editable. Edit the name in the iPhoto Window and it will be changed in the Finder too. Plus you get the opportunity to name a roll on import too.
So: There's your folders with you descriptive names, there's how to get to a pic from the iPhoto Window.
And, yes, I'm sorry you'll have to re=rate your pics.
Always with iPhoto: Whatever you want to do can be - and must be - done via the iPhoto Window.
Canon cameras, specifically, do not appear on the Mac desktop. It's a characteristic of that brand. Workarounds include using a USB card reader.
By all means post again if you need more help.

  • Iphoto 08 cannot see pictures from this past year in events?

    Hi!
I have been using iphoto 08 pretty successfully this past year, getting used to not being able to access the files directly, uploading on to snapfish, and accessing my photo library on the external hard drive.
well, tonight I was trying to post a picture on to facebook, was browing old pictures from 2004. after not finding what I was looking for, i scrolled back down to pictures I uploaded just last night and voila........the last event folder is dated December 2007
What happened? I see them when looking through my finder (i have leopard) and I see the file path but I do not see them in iphoto 08.
please help, I must have uploaded thousands of pictures in the past year........

Sounds like a damaged database file:
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Cannot see pictures in iPhoto Recovered Folder

After importing my pictures from my camera, I could not see it in iPhoto. After repairing iPhoto, there are files in the Repaired folder but the thumbnails are all grey. When I open the picture, they are blank but info shows the file size as 2.7mb or 3mb. How do I view these pictures?

What I would try is to export those photos to a folder on the Desktop via File ➙ Export ➙ File Export  with Kind = Original.  Then open them with Preview and see if they will disply properly.  If the do save each as a new file with a new file name and try to import the new files.
If you can get the new files into iPhoto delete the problem files.

  • Can't see pictures in full screen mode

This is my new Mac Computer. Some of the pictures can not be viewed except as thumbnails. (When I try to see in full screen mode, there is a quick 1 second view, then a grey screen with an I in the middle and a dotted line surrounding it. There is no rhyme nor reason why some photos can been seen in full mode and some can only be seen as thumbnail.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
The ! or ? turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
The most common cause of this is User Activity in the iPhoto Library Folder. Have you altered, moved or renamed anything in the iPhoto Library Folder?
If you haven't, then try rebuilding the database. Hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys and launch iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.

    Hi toddfromport jefferson station,
It is not clear from your post whether you can access anything else on using your network connection, such as the Internet. It is also not clear if your connection to your network (from any of your devices) is via Ethernet or wifi. In any case, for a wireless network, you may want to use this article to troubleshoot -

  • IPhoto crashes on zooming photo in full screen

When i blow up a 5 megapixel picture to full size, and drag the navigation window around for a few seconds, iPhoto crashes (always) after showing some display corruption ( horizontal streaked lines (never vertical))and sometimes OSX itself crashes (4 language death). I observed another type of display graphics corruption while using Google Earth. There are yellow (or blue) squares formed and juxtaposed at various locations on the google earth window when the software tries to Fly To some location (Graphics intensive process).
Since my macbook pro is refurbished, i thought it might be a hardware issue:
    To check for hardware issues:
I did the 'hardware test' using the Install disc 1 and booting with it with "c" pressed. The test concluded that hardware was OK.
To check for software glitches arising from 3rd party software:
I reinstalled a fresh OSX, and only the bundled software, including iPhoto. It still crashed. Then i updated all the software through Software Update in the apple menu. Still iPhoto crashes.
Can you give any comments/suggestions on what is the likely cause?
    Cheers,
    faisal

    faisal:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. That type of crash is a kernel panic. I suggest you launch Disk Utility and verify the disk. If you get a red warning that it couldn't be verified, then there's some basic damage to the directory files. You'll have to boot into the system install disk that came with the MBP and in the first window after the language selection window, go to the Utilities menu and launch Disk Utility. There do a Disk Repair. Then reboot back into your boot drive.
Once rebooted delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, from your User/Library/Preferences folder. Then try iPhoto again.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Photo will not go to full size

photos will only go full size in edit. wont open with double click either

are marked with an exclamation and I cannot edit, bring to full size, or upload
The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
If neither help, how did you bring them from the old machine to the new one?

  • Cannot View Thumbnails in Full Screen

I imported 195 photo from my SD memory card to iphotos. I had a problem importing a .avi file to iphotos when I was importing the 195 photos which warranted a force quit to bypass the spinning beachball. The pictures all now show in Thumbnails and when i get info on the the total size is 175mb and all individual pictures size range from 600KB to 1MB. When I opt to view these pictures in full size i get a fullscreen exclamation mark.
These pictures are of a recent family trip to Disneyland and I am crossing my fingers that these can be retreaved so they can be view in full screen mode.
I would appreciate any assistance in finding a solution?

  • Animated iPhoto Slideshow: Cannot recreate my original slideshows

In early 2011, I created 7 different animated iPhoto Slideshows to use as part of my acting and modeling marketing program.  The iPhoto Slideshow software was amazing in how it took still photography and, in a seemingly simple and easy way, transformed it into exciting, highly creative, professional looking video presentations with synchronized music. My slideshows were many times better than the original still photography.
Recently, I needed to update/replace one photo in some of these slideshows.  To my dismay, I discovered that it was impossible to recreate four of these iPhoto Slideshows.  Every time I attempted to do so, the resulting slideshows were nothing like my original slideshows.  Actually, the overall quality of these 4 slideshows has been drastically downgraded to the point of being unusable--for one or more of the following reasons:  the most interesting, unusual setup of 4 photos [up left: square; up rt: oblong; low left: oblong; low rt: square] in Sliding Panels has been eliminated; this results in a lot of repetition of the same setups within this slideshow; in another slideshow, the current software produces a totally different slideshow that is absolutely rigid throughout and will make no changes/modifications, regardless of the photo order or photo format; in one slideshow, the photo alignment is completely off; and the music is not always in sync with the action.
Over the past several months, I have discussed these problems with many different people at Apple Support.  Everyone that I have spoken with assumed the problem was caused by a software update to iPhoto Slideshow sometime since early last year.  On April 6th, after reviewing this problem with Apple Engineering, an Apple Support Advisor briefed me on what Engineering had to say.  The response was basically this:  When the iPhoto Slideshow was created, Apple purposely included an algorithm that continually changes the slideshows.  Therefore, if I create a slideshow today, it may be impossible to ever recreate that same slideshow again because of this algorithm.
I must admit that I am more than a little suspicious about Apple’s response.  It seems just too good to be true; especially due to the fact the stated cause is not easily provable or disprovable.  And Apple Support certainly did not attempt to validate or offer any reasons to support why I should accept this as truthful. Actually, until now, everyone at Apple that I had spoken with assumed the problem was caused by an update to the iPhoto Slideshow software since early last year.  Moreover, 3 of the original slideshows are currenty easily re-creatable.  Finally, this stated cause is so consistent with my experience of how Apple handles all product and software problems:  Nothing is wrong with our product or software.  There must be something wrong with your system or how you are using it.
My bet is that Apple significantly changed the slideshow software when they introduced the new iPad in late 2011 to accomodate the unique format of iPad. Hence, the iPhoto Slideshow software would work on iMac, iPhone and iPad.
MY QUESTION IS SIMPLY THIS:  HAS ANYONE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM AS I HAVE WITH THE ANIMATED iPHOTO SLIDESHOWS?

Is this the panel you're referring to in the Sliding Panels theme?
If so then it's still availabe in the iPhoto 11 version.  Try a different arrangement of photos.  If that doesn't work try this:  make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
