IPhoto 6 goes really, really slow

Hi,
my iPhoto 6 is going really, really slow, and as soon as I open iPhoto 6 other open programs go slow too. First I thought it must be the size of the pics but with other Photo editing programs everything seems to go with normal speed.
Has anyone got a solution to this problem? Has anyone made similar experiences? What kind of procedures would you recommend?
Thank you very much in advance for your help!
Kind Regards,
Xbal

Actually, according to the System Requirements, 256mb is the bare minimum of RAM for OS X and iLife 6. I know this is true because (check my specs) I run with this, and my iPhoto library has 5,000 photos. But yes, it is slow. Switching between iPhoto and Safari takes a minute. Photoshop Elements 4 is even slower. I hope to upgrade to a gig soon, and I refuse to run the iLife and Quicktime updates before then. Anyway, the latest QT update is just too buggy.
But my point is, it does work. I have made several movies in iMovie and iDVD and even burned the DVDs. I don't see how 512mb would cause the Mac to grind to a halt.

Ok, sorry. And yes, I just restored my iPhone as new and tried to put all the songs on there before I even restored with my previous backup, but it still does the same thing... even when I just checked the option to sync only "selected music or videos". How's that possible?
P.S. After I tried syncing with checked songs only, nothing showed up under Music on my phone and this message popped up in iTunes: "The iPhone "..." could not be synced because the sync session failed to finish." If you could, please tell me what that means, thanks.

  • Adjustment Brush really, really slow in LR 3.3

    Hi,
Don't know if anyone else has this problem, but when I use the adjustment brush with the photo in 1:1 ratio, my computer becomes really, really slow to respond.  It becomes so slow, that I have to shut down LR 3.3 and restart.  I'm using Windows 7, 64bit with 8GB of memory and my color card is an ATI HD5450 with 1GB of memory.  I have my LR3.3 Camera Raw cashe settings at 75GB and on a different internal hard drive.  I do not have this problem with LR2.7, which I'm glad I didn't remove.  Anyone having this problem and found a solution?  LR3.3 has really been a head ache for me.  Lots of small, but annoying problems.
    Thanks,
    Dennis

It is funny what we each think of as "relatively old". Three years since I purchased the PC. It works fine for everything else that I use it for but the change between LR 2 and LR 3 has been quite marked in terms of rendering speed. I would say it is far more than a doubling. If it were only a "little bit" longer I wouldn't mind but this is distinctly annoying. The images are off a 5D MKII so 21MP.
As for keywording as the first one is available that makes an assumption that this issue is at import. Indeed I keyword in bulk at import via metadata preset and typing in keywords so I don't have to touch the images at all until they are ready to review.
Yes import rendering is slow but in this case I am working in develop mode. I had just gone through and done batch white balance adjustments. At that point my practice is to re-render the images before I do fine w/b adjustments and adjustments to exposure and black point, this means that there is less delay between opening an image and it "loading" ready to work on. However the huge delay that it causes is making me re-think this and possibly suffering the "loading" delay instead.
Most of the changes for LR2 to LR3 have been good (the notable exception being slideshow which is no longer useable). This however is not a good change.

  • 1% of webpages load really really slow - tried many fixes in this forum

There are just a few sites in Safari that load really really slow. Those same sites load slow in Firefox also yet, on a Windows machine on same internet connection, those sites load super-fast, which leads me to believe that's its something in Mac's TCP/IP settings. Its been the same both pre- and post-Safari 3.1. I've tried deleting the icons folder, using OpenDNS on both Mac and router, reseting Safari, turning off IPv6. I think the sites in question use Java in minor ways so perhaps that is the problem, but millions of unproblematic sites use Java too.... Anybody have other suggestions?

You may well be right, but there are sites out there that still linger in Internet Explorer-Land, or have not been updated to comply with the stricter standards of Safari.

  • My i-phone screen goes dark really quickly

My i-phone screen goes dark really quickly.  How do I change the setting?

    Hey there Snow Falls,
It sounds like you would like to change the amount of time it takes for your phone to automatically lock. This function is located in your Settings on the phone:
Set the amount of time before iPhone locks
Choose General > Auto-Lock and choose a time.
    From: iPhone: About General Settings

  • Launchpad really really slow

Today i just noticed that on my iMac launchpad is really really slow, like it's animations are messed up, looks like i get screen tearing too.
This is on a mid 2011 iMac with 4GB ram and amd 512mb graphics.
Any idea why? I googled it and it seems to be a known problem with no solution?!

    I HAVE THE PROBLEM TO!
I have contacted Apple Support by phone - But they didnt seem to be able to help me!
It begain resently, but for me Launch pad close to crashes when I am trying to open it. Takes me about 5 minutes, before it loads- And when it does, I cant use it anyway.
While it is loading, I cant do anything. And it looks like in the old days, when we didnt have ADSL but a really really crappy contection. Remember? When all images was "scanned" in.. The same here... It kinda Scan's the ikons.
Its the same with my Top Sites in Safari.. Only, that doesnt stop again. Not until I have succes with actually closing Safari. (Takes a long time to!)
Also, I suddently cant watch any videos online. Yesterday I could!
I dont remember having updatet og installed anything since before yesterday.
    I have reinstalled Flashplayer.
    I have reinstalled Mountain lion.
I have repaired disk and disk permisions.
    I have deletet 10 3rd party programs.
I have plenty of disk space.
Its the same problem with all browsers.
The only very poor solution I could find regarding the L P problem, was to lower the soloution to 800x600. Was a litle litle bit better. But after setting it back to normal, it was the same crap!
    Help?

  • TS4435 Apple's temporary fix to drag each picture in iPhoto is not really a solution for a big pic file. Better to use the save all feature and save to a temporary place before importing it to iPhoto.

Apple's temporary fix to drag each picture in iPhoto is not really a solution for a big pic file. Better to use the save all feature and save to a temporary place before importing it to iPhoto.

Can you explain why the image size matters when dragging and dropping into iPhoto?

  • Ever since i upgraded to mountain lion, my macbook pro is really really slow

ever since i upgraded to mountain lion, my macbook pro (17" 2010 intel i7 4GB ram) is really really slow, specially at start up and shut down. any solution?
my hard drive is has about 200 GB free space, and i do regular varification for my drive. i almost regret upgrading to mountain lion :-(

Depending on the software you use (and how many programs you use at once) you may need to add more RAM. Shutdown with 10.8.2 is noticably longer than Lion's shutdown (and even slower than the original release of 10.8). I suggest you reboot your computer and immediately launch Activity Monitor. You want to watch two things: 1) RAM - as you use the computer over the next couple of hours after the reboot are you seeing the Page Out number increasing pretty quickly? That would be an indication that your computer is quickly using up RAM and pushing software and data into Virtual Memory to make room. This could account for the slow computer. 2) CPU - unless you are running some heavy duty software, your CPU usage may spike close to 80-90% for a few seconds but mostly hover in the 20-40% range. If it is higher than that, or if you see a single process using more than 70% constantly you may have a rogue process that is dragging the computer down.

  • IPhoto 11 is so slow when opening

Very recently my iPhoto has become so slow when opening, it can take anywhere between 3 and 7 minutes, during this time my Macbook just hangs, I can't use any other programs.
I have attempted running the iPhoto first aid, I have picked all of the options on the first aid list and nothing has helped. I have tried quitting everything before opening iPhoto and this makes no difference. I have also deleted some of the photos from my library, but I don't have an exceptionally large library anyway, 1900 jpegs.
I am running iPhoto 11 version 9.4.2 with mountain lion 10.8.2, I have no issues with any other programs being slow.
Once it opens it is generally fine, but it's just turning a 20 second task into a 10 minute task.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have (had?) the identical problem, with just slightly different details (I'm on Lion, not Mountain Lion, and I haven't tried repairing anything yet in iPhoto). iPhoto used to start up in a reasonable amount of time, but it seems since updated to 9.4.2, the startup time is incredibly long (I'll guess 5-10x longer). Admittedly, I have one of the largest iPhoto libraries I've heard of, but I'm just really trying to see why the update changed startup time so much.
Note that I have 500GB of free space on my boot drive, and that creating a new iPhoto library results in a speedy startup.
An oddity I just now see after creating a new library is, when I go back to select my old library at iPhoto launch, there are two libraries listed, with identical names, and identical paths ("iPhoto Library" - /Users/UserName/Pictures/iPhoto Library). Looking in the finder, I only see one Library with that name. After playing around with opening either one, now the first one says "(default)" after it every time.
Note that I just added "(had?)" to the beginning of my post, as it seems like my library has started opening in the normal amount of time since I played around with the libraries (creating a new one, etc.). So maybe just creating a new library and then going back to the default library with help thatgurlwho too?

  • IQuiz goes very very slow...

I have the game iQuiz, I have 2060 songs on my iPod. When I advance to another level in Music Quiz 2, the loading icon in front of the the big red X and green checkmark does not move much. More like, 1/4 turn at the most. Also, the when I complete a Lighting Round, it shows correct answers I missed that didn't even show up. My friend who only has 1000 songs on his iPod, does not face this problem, also, he says that the Lighting Round goes by really fast when for me it moves very slow. Is this a bug, or do I just have more music than iQuiz and quickly handle?
20" iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   iLife '06, Microsoft Office 2004, and I'm single! (hey, it says other details..)

    Hi Juan,
Well, that's definitely a possibility (having a lot of music on your iPod, which might slow up iQuiz).
To improve your iPod's speed, you could try restoring it, and see if that helps.
For info on restoring an iPod, see this article:
    Restoring iPod to factory settings
If a restore doesn't help, then probably the best thing you can do at this point is to report your problem on the iPod Feedback form:
    iPod Feedback
iQuiz seems to be a bit of a problematic game, and has been proven to interfere with your iPod's OS and settings. For example, I've seen several reports where, when playing iQuiz with music, iQuiz automatically switches your "Repeat" setting to "On".
So, if we get enough reports of the iQuiz problems to Apple, they may release some sort of updated version of the game, for bug fixes, or perhaps a new version of iPod firmware.

  • Really, really delete photos

I went through my iPhoto 08 library 7.1.5 (378) and deleted a ton of photos. I used mostly the delete key but some drag to trash. I emptied trash and they all went away - I thought. However, I do not see a change in the size of the iPhoto library package.
Is this normal? Does deleting a photo leave an file of the image around somewhere? Is there a way to really, really delete them?

So you're running a Managed Library and also keeping copies of the files in your Pictures Folder.
This means that you are using twice the disk space.
The Photos outside the Library package have nothing to do with iPhoto, and quite sensibly, iPhoto has no control over them.
but someone else on a forum wrote that it is a bad idea to mess with the iPhoto package.
It is, and there is simply never a need to in normal usage.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Really really annoying problem with slooooow Adress Book

I have a really, really annoying problem with Address Book.
Ever since I connected it with the MobileMe service it has this problem, and I just cant get rid of it. I have tried logging out and back into the MobileMe service, resetting the sync history etc., but to no avail.
Each time I open the application it freezes for about 5 to 10 seconts, then that blooming annoying, Windows reminiscent, rotating rainbow circle appears for about a minute at a time. Then it goes away and the application works..........that is until try something demanding like adding a new group or changing a group name, then it starts over. It is making the Address Book almost unusable and very un-Mac-like.
    Can someone please help???

    Try deleting this plist:
    (yourUserName)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist
As well, the general approach at this time is to ask if you've checked for any problematic fonts (all languages) with Apple's Font Book (look in the Applications folder). Find and remove all duplicates also.
Start there to be sure all fonts that are in play come out with a clean bill of health.
Also, don't hesisate to perform wholesale deletion of old and/or little used fonts - be skeptical of anything that has come from Office 2008, including those related to an Equation Editor installation.
By all means be sure your 3rd party apps are Snow Leopard compatibl

  • Mpd + sonata = really, really nice!

Man!  Being able to kill X and still keep the tunes going is superb!  It's really really super nice.  I'm going to setup a hifi system at my new apartment based around mpd and sonata when I fix my speaker foam that someone kicked a hole through at my mom's place
Anyway, don't mean to be cluttering up the forums with these unnecessary messages.  If you come across this and haven't tried the mpd + sonata combo, you should tryitreallyfast ... and see if you like it

I tried sonata and gmpc. I think gmpc is better in managing files than sonata. Is there any other client recommended for its functionalitiy you would like to suggest like editing id3 tags from the clinet as madman does.
Also, the multimedia keys assigned to gmpc becomes exclusive to it as you cannot use it in other programs. For example, i assigned "c" for play/pause and now i'm unable to type "C" in any other program, like text editor or web browsers. Is there a way to overcome this problem such that the key works only when gmpc window is active.
And when i close gmpc, mpd keeps on playing the song. sonata has an option which stops mpd when sonata is closed, but not gmpc.
