IPhoto 6 - Imports by Roll! WHY!!!

So, after being very excited about getting iLife 6 and doing the upgrade, I'm dismayed to find that some nut at Apple thought importing by roll would make things better in some way. Yes we can use iPhoto to edit, but I don't, I use Photoshop and now finding and sorting photos is really terrible. Is there someway to make the importing of photos go back to the more intelligent way of importing them into folders with the dates, not some strange roll number? I have 1200 photos for 2006 that I want to start editing, but finding all of them isn't looking pretty.

V6 has changed it's folder system to use folders that represent imports or shoots. This is in line with other image management application, from consumer to professionsal. iPhoto is designed so the user does not have go inside the iPhoto Library folder via the Finder (Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto Library folder from the Finder) for any reason. All access to photos or the files are to be carried out within iPhoto. If you need a file for use in another application you can drag the thumbnail into the other application's open window. If you need files for uploading to a web site, the File->Export->File Export menu option is the route to take. That way you can resize the files to the size required by the site.
If you want to find the original file Control-Click on the thumbnail and in the contextual menu select Show File. It will open the folder in the Finder where the file is and the file will be preselected.

Aperture 3 importing iphoto albulms as 'Rolls'

trying to import from iphoto but the albums are appearing as rolls and not as their original names or dates. Any suggestions? Also, not all the albums are appearing.

I assume you mean what you see in iPhoto as Events, rather than albums.
Early versions of iPhoto (several versions back) would track an import session with the designation "Roll nn" where nn was an index that went up. This was back before iPhoto introduced the concept of Events. For the most part, the roll designations weren't obvious, though you could see them in some modes. When iPhoto introduced Events, those they seem to have dropped the notion of rolls. So much so, that if you didn't give the Event a name, it would just show as the date of the Event, not the Roll #.
When I imported my iPhoto Library, the mapping to projects went one of three ways. First, Events that I'd named, came into projects with the same name. Events that I hadn't named, but that had been imported into iPhoto since iPhoto added the concept of Events, came into projects named for the date of the import. Lastly Events I hadn't named, but which were around in the time iPhoto used the Roll # designations, came into projects named for the Roll #.

Why doesn't iPhoto import black

My iPhoto imports black and white photos, or line drawings saved as .jpg, in black out form, i.e., no image. How can I change this.

I'm guessing at what you're asking here. iPhoto supports RGB colour profiles. If whatever you're importing has a greyscale or CYMK one, it won't come in properly. Cameras shot in RGB.

It looks like a bug-
There are several reports, that this has been happening, since the iOS 8.1 release. It happens in iPhoto, Image Capture, Aperture, but not all are seeing this problem.

Unfortunately, there is no clear picture yet, what circumstances will make it happen, and how to prevent it.
For some forum members it was the Photo Stream, others found it was caused by HDR photos, for some the problem went away after the 8.1.2 update, for others it started with this update.
A few forum members reported, that it helped to dismount the iPhone and plug it in again, and then the duplicates went away.

Iphoto import creating and importing duplicates/ios8

I'm using iphoto 9.4.3 and my iphone 5s with ios8. Since septemberish (ios8 update), it's been double-importing all my pix on from my iphone - none are showing up as duplicates on the phone but import/iPhoto view shows and imports them all twice. All images come in as img_1234 and img_1234_2 for example.
Can't figure out why this is but it's a pain - I'm using third party software to scrub duplicates from the library after the fact but is anyone else having this problem?

I've got this same problem. Didn't see this thread before I posted mine (Re: iPhoto imports 2 of every photo - iPhone 6).
I've tried:
Hard restart iPhone
Updated iPhoto (9.6)
Updated OSX (10.10)
Updated iOS (8.1.1)
Nothing has worked; I get two of every photo and video imported into iPhoto.
Has anyone else solved this issue? It's not a huge problem; more like an annoyance.

Not on the origina as it will essentially be a tif in jpeg's clothing. But if you make an edit it will go thru a jpeg compression. Whether you'll be able to see the reduction in resolution is another matter.
I ran a test and changed a tiff file to .jpg and it was useabel in iPhoto, Acorn, Xee, GraphicConverter but not PhotoShop or Photoshop Elements. So you can change the extension on all of those portrait photos but be sure to convert to a JPG when you export them out of iPhoto for use. Don't know how other apps will react to such a hybred file.
One plan of action would be to import them into iPhoto and then export out as tiffs right away. Then import back in and see if all is OK.

IPhoto import to A3 - Faces is now Shoulders or Elbows??

After importing my iPhoto library, I noticed that my Faces are no longer Faces, but Elbows, Shoulders, Tummies, Etc......
Now, I can't see some of my Faces and it wants me to name Hands, Sky and Tummies?? Anyone else have this issue with your iPhoto import.
What I've tried so far:
1)I deleted everything and imported again (same issue).
2)I created a new Admin user, created a new A3 library and put it on a different drive, then imported my iPhoto library again (same issue)
3)The issue is happening to the same people each time.
4)I repaired Permissions from System Disk
5)I ran Disk Repair from System Disk
6)No....I did not wipe out my computer and do a fresh install of the OS. Why does everyone have to do this? And if this is done, if you port over all your programs and settings from Time Machine, aren't you just porting over all the same issues. So to keep from porting your issues, you have to painstakingly reinstall ALL your software? Sorry, but NO, that is just too much work. I'm not retired.....yet.
I did a search and couldn't find anyone with this issue.

I'm seeing the same thing with some of my photos. Certainly not all of them, though. What I've been doing is removing those shots from the grouping of a certain person, and ignoring them when it shows them to me as an unnamed face. It seems the offset within the photo got mangled, somehow, as the person in question is in the photos with this problem (I can tell by distinctive clothing, sometime). I've wondered if it might be related to cropped photos, with the face box position calculated from the origin of the original photo or the crop, and Aperture getting confused over which to use.
I haven't yet found the "not a face" and "add a face" method in Aperture, that iPhoto has, but I haven't really looked for it, yet, either.

Iphoto imports some movies ok..but not all????

iPhoto imports everything but some movie clips I've taken come up as .mov files and others as (poor quality) jpgs?
Why? Whats going on?

It displays a thumbnail of a .jpg and not a .mov.
You click on it and you get an enlarged version, just a poor quality photo.
This only happens SOMETIMES.
One movie may be imported as a .mov (with the correct info on iphoto page); ie: double click gets you what you want.
The next one may not and is just the dodgy .jpg.
Any clues????

I watched it upload about 400 photos, one by one. They're somewhere, but they don't appear in the iPhoto library. As iPhoto was deleting them from my camera, it got hung up, then a message came "you should eject before disconnecting a device." I hadn't touched the camera. The message came by itself. I couldn't get iPhoto to respond, so I disconnected the camera and did a Force Quit. Opening it back up, the pictures were gone. Can somebody help me?

What version of iPhoto are you running? Assuming it's iPhoto 9 or later Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

iPhoto import Browser failure.
No Events or Albums show, although PhotoBooth is visible, error message 'Open iPhoto 5 or later to see photos...'
This used to work, but not since installing Security Update 2010-006 (1.0),
with "iTunes" (10.0.1) and JavaForMacOSX10.6Update3.
Using iPhoto '09 (8.1.2), iMovie '09 (8.0.6).
Heard mention that now only alpha-numeric characters are allowed for file names and titles, so started replacing "&", apostrophes, etc. But there are a LOT of photos to change!
Console shows:
[0x0-0x15015].com.apple.iPhoto[264]
MRMovieServer[273] <Error>: kCGErrorFailure
Tried repairing permissions, but got a warning about a SUID file has been modified and will not be repaired, (not sure if this is relevant).
Removed com.apple.iApps.plist and com.apple.iMovie8.plist, which then gave a slightly different view of the browser in iMovie.
Can no longer drag items from iPhoto either!
Any ideas of how to proceed (and remain sane)?

I've had something like this, since October.
Firstly, In the Utilities folder, open Disk Utility, select the disk where the Applications are (Main hard disk) click First Aid, then "Repair Permissions". Leave it running with nothing else open.
When finished, open iMovie, click the photo browser icon, any luck?
Seen an Apple support doc 'Cannot see iPhoto in other Apps', basically you may be right about ampersands & apostrophes.
In iPhoto, look at all your smart album names for non-alpha-numeric characters, and replace or delete the possible culprits. I had lots of these, including brackets (which were not a problem until recently). Keep checking your smart albums to find others, such as these: !@£$%^&()[]{}'\"|~.
Quit iPhoto and all other iLife Apps, then in your home folder, Library, Preferences, move 'com.apple.iApps.plist' to the desktop (this will be recreated when you next open an iApp/iLife application, such as iPhoto).
You may need to remake the iPhoto AlbumData.xml file, after all that name editing. See later.
Open iMovie and click the photo browser icon, if you still get the message, rather than Albums and Events, Quit iMovie.
Open iPhoto, double check your source list for folders which you may have smart albums in, (click the triangle to the left of any folders that you've made to reveal their contents). Repeat the search and replace of special characters. I'd missed a few, hiding in folders.
Now would be a good time to remake the iPhoto 'AlbumData.xml' file.
Quit all applications, go to your Pictures folder, iPhoto Library, ctrl-click, 'Show package contents', drag 'AlbumData.xml' to the desktop.
Close the finder windows.
Open iPhoto, create a new album, then Quit, (this should remake the xml file).
Open iMovie again and click the photo browser icon. This is the point where I had success, I hope it works for you as well.

Problem iPhoto imports triplicates of my iPhone photos

When i want to import my iPhone photos on my mba'2012, iPhoto wants to import 3 times each photo.
Instead of importing 1006 photos, iPhoto imports 3018 photos !! :-/
For example, for a IMG_1500.jpg, iPhoto imports IMG_1550.jpg, IMG_1500_2.jpg and IMG_1500_3.jpg. (same size for each photo)
Everything is fine in the Photos.app in my iPhone, i see the exact number of photos (1006).
HDR is OFF
So what the problem?

Png files are over each other in the iphoto import window

When i connect my iphone to the mac to import photos in iphoto, the png files are over each other in the iphoto import window. Jpegs are also showing up in the iphoto grid with new photos but each box contains 1 photo, which is normal. With png pictures, iphoto puts up to 3 pictures on top of each other in each box.
Anybody has seen this before?

oops, sorry, re-installed iphoto and it works again, they weren't even png's just jpegs...

Aperture iPhoto Import

I imported my iPhoto library into a trial version of Aperture (Aperture will manage the directory). iPhoto manages the photos by putting them in by year in the "Masters" directory, then by event name. I noticed that the Aperture iPhoto import placed all my photos into 2011 directory instead of the same file structure in iPhoto. Is there a way to get Aperture to manage my imported photos and place the photos in a file stucture by year?
I do not intend to monkey around with the iphoto or aperture library's, but I do want the photos stored in a fasion that I could move on to some other program if needed in the future.

None taken, I am just one of those that want to know how Aperture is handling my photos. My search in the manual and in this forum did not help entirely, until now. You are right it does not matter how Aperture handles the bundle as long as you want to continue to use Aperture. I thought it was strange that iPhoto handles it one way and Aperture handles it another. I like the way iPhoto places my photos in by year. It appears that Aperture will also do this but only for my pictures this day forward. My concern is for the future, and for something that may never happen, but I plan for it anyway. If I decide to make another change in the future, I would want to make sure at least the pictures are structured by year. I should be able to go into the Aperture bundle and copy the masters out if needed. I was hoping I could get the imported photos structure by year. I do like Aperture so far and will more than likely make the purchase.

This is for Microsoft SQL Server, not for Oracle.
If you get "out of memory" it's not a database logfile problem but a memory problem.

IPhoto import - a way to import specific albums?

I was watching the instructional video DVD that came with aperture and have found it a very, very helpful tutorial in getting started. I am having a problem doing one of the things shown on it though. At the beginning of the second track, the video covers iPhoto import, and shows how you can import a specific album by Import > Files and choosing a specific album name within the iPhoto library. My iPhoto library, however, does not have any album names in it - only numbered folders. I'd like to be able to import my business photos only and not my personal photos into Aperture, or ideally both but with a separate aperture project for each photo session. But since the iPhoto hierarchy is just numbered folders, it is too confusing to find what i am trying to import. Do I have to export all my iPhoto albums separately into folders that I name individually, and then import those folders into Aperture?

You need to
1. Download the images to a folder on the desktop.
It may be possible to download an entire album at a time, but that's a question for a Picasa forum
2. Then import the folder to iPhoto.
