IPhoto 6: Making calendar from smart album

I have defined a smart album for photos taken between 25-Jul-05 and 24-Jul-06. About a week ago I began to make a calendar from this smart album. Today, I placed more photos in the iPhoto library taken between these dates. The smart album shows them, but the calendar doesn't, so I can't use them in my calendar. Is there a way to convince the calendar to refresh its list of photos? If not, I'll have to make a new calendar -- and that would be a real pain in the ...

What you can do instead of refreshing the list is go into your smart album where your new photos and drag these onto your calender in the folder list on the left of your screen. once you have done this you can click on your calender and all your new photos will be in the list of photos for your calender.

  • Making Details:Duplicate from Smart Album?  Duplicate and Crop in one step?

I need to create details -- blown-up portions -- of several hundred photos. Many of the photos have three areas from which I would like to create details. I want to retain the originals as originals. I want the details to remain in whatever event the original is in. It would be helpful to have the details not inherit the keywords of the original. What is the best way to do this in iPhoto?
Here are some of the problems I've encountered.
    - My originals are in Events. I have tagged the photos from which I want to create details with various keywords. I have Smart Albums set up for keywords. Is there any way to duplicate a photo from within a Smart Album ("Duplicate" is grayed out)?
    - - Is there any way to select a photo in a Smart Album and then go to Events or Photos view and have that photo selected?
    - Once I have the photo selected, I want to quickly select the area of the detail and create a duplicate and crop it to the selected area. Is there an easy way to do this?
    - - Pressing "c" in Edit mode brings up the crop mode (as long as Keywords aren't show and you don't have a keyword assigned to "c") _with an area of the photo already selected. Is there any way to either not have an area initially selected or to with one key press get rid of the "pre-selection"?
    - Sometimes I don't know until I look at the photo that I want details. Ideally I'd like to be able to, in Edit view, select an area of the photo with the mouse cursor, and with one key-press duplicate the photo and crop it to the area selected.
I am willing to consider using an external editor.
    Thanks!

No. However, if you search the Library on the Keyword (using the Search Box) you'll be able to duplicate.
    - - Is there any way to select a photo in a Smart Album and then go to Events or Photos view and have that photo selected?
No. Bu again, using the Search Box, with 'Event Titles' selected in the View Menu will do something similar.
    - Once I have the photo selected, I want to quickly select the area of the detail and create a duplicate and crop it to the selected area. Is there an easy way to do this?
Define'Quick'. Here's the quickest way I can find: Crop the pic to the detail. Duplicate the cropped pic and the Revert to Original on the first one. Result: your original pic plus a cropped version. However: you will lose +all previous edits+ on the pic doing this.
    - - Pressing "c" in Edit mode brings up the crop mode (as long as Keywords aren't show and you don't have a keyword assigned to "c") _with an area of the photo already selected. Is there any way to either not have an area initially selected or to with one key press get rid of the "pre-selection"?
    No and no.
    - Sometimes I don't know until I look at the photo that I want details. Ideally I'd like to be able to, in Edit view, select an area of the photo with the mouse cursor, and with one key-press duplicate the photo and crop it to the area selected.
Isn't that the same question as the 'Quick' one above?
I am willing to consider using an external editor.
What's nor clear from your questions is the actual detail required. Are these several hundred pics all the same dimensions, with the detail in the same location each time? If so, you could probably create a Photoshop action to automate the process for you. But if you don't have photoshop or have never created an Action then you might well be faster to do the job by hand.

  • Just upgraded to iPhoto '11...missing Smart Albums and Flags...Help???

I just upgraded from iPhoto '08 to iPhoto '11 via the App Store.  While it appears that all of my photos are still on my computer, when I try to open my Smart Albums, it says that they contain "no photos."  Also, it appears that none of my photos marked with flags are still flagged.  Can anyone help?

How did you upgrade the library? Did you just open it with iPhoto 11 and let it convert the library to the new version?  If so then try the following:
Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • New Album from Smart Album makes NEW VERSIONS of all files? Bug?

Got what I think is an oddball bug here, but see if any of you have experienced it.
Making a new album of the contents of a Smart Album with about 600 images resulted in the SBOD, a lot of time and disk activity and the creation of NEW VERSIONS of all the files populating the new album. This, of course, also doubled the number of files in the original Smart Album, since the keywords used are a match. First thinking it might be something I had not read in the manual, I grabbed the book and could not find this behavior listed…..so….my expected result is a new album with the identical contents of the Smart Album selected as the source.
I am creating a presentation for a client whose work is in multiple projects in a ~150GB library. All images are heavily keyworded, so making Smart Albums of specific elements of the work was easy. My intended workflow to get through this mountain of pix was to make Smart Albums of specific elements, then make New Albums from each, manually edit and reorg these albums individually, then combine my edits into a single book file.
Now the structure leading to this problem is as follows:
    1) I created a single “main” folder to store all projects and other elements and hierarchy for this client. Clicking on this folder returns some 8500 images spanning multiple projects…all as expected.
    2) At the top level of this “main” folder, I made about 20 Smart Albums to presort the main elements I wanted to include. I made the first Smart Album by clicking the icon in the top bar. The rest of the smart albums I made by duplicating the previous Smart Album, then changing keyword selection. I would select the new keywords I wanted, then de-select the ones that were from the album I had duplicated. The reason I did it that was for speed, there is little delay in displaying the items that were already searched for, and a significant delay in going from new. Anyway, somewhere in this process, I decided to organize my workflow further, so I created a new folder (calling it Smart Album Selects) at the same level as the Smart Albums, and then dragged the Smart Albums into the new Smart Album Selects folder. Still, no problem.
    3) Later in my session, I went to create another new Smart Album, and this time I did so already in the Smart Album Selects folder. When I opened the HUD to select the keywords, the Keyword area and check box were greyed out!!! Weird, I though….so I simply duplicated an existing Smart Album from my Smart Album Selects folder, opened the HUD, and sure enough, all my keywords were there. I changed the keyword selection, and went on with work. During the day I did this same operation 3 more times, making 4 Smart Albums created the same way.
    4) OK…here is the strange behavior. To make my new custom album from the Smart Album selects, I selected one of the Smart Albums, and clicked on the New Album icon. Got the expected dialog, make with 1 image or all images, selected all images, and instead of a new album popping up moments later, I got the SBOD, and the Activity Monitor said Aperture and my hard disk was cranking away. About 4-5 minutes later, Aperture became responsive again, and had created a new album. However, upon inspection, the album contained NEW VERSIONS of all the images that were in the Smart Album, about 600 files.
    5) I went back and clicked on a different Smart Album in the same spot in the hierarchy…but it was one of the first ones I had created (meaning I built this BEFORE reorganizing into the Smart Album Selects folder). Tried making a new album again, with 1 image, worked fine, popped up instantly. Tried selecting 4 images, same thing, worked fine. Selected All, made album, worked fine.
    6) Went back to the Smart Album I had the problem with, this time selected 4 images, make New Album, and sure enough the New Album had NEW VERSIONS of the pix again…OK, I went back to the top of my folder hierarchy, my “main” folder and made a brand new Smart Album by clicking the icon, and selecting keywords. Made a new album from that, no problem, popped up instantly, no new versions.
    7) I then re-made all my Smart Albums at the top of the folder hierarchy, and they all work fine creating new albums. I got back to the task at hand…hopefully there is enough data here to let the Aperture engineers find this problem…Assuming, that is it is not just me misunderstanding some element in the program.
Sorry for the length, but has anyone else run into this??
PowerBook G4 1.67 2GB RAM 128MB ATI Video, External FW Drives for library   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Nope, all the images at this point in my workflow have been unstacked, with the non-picked members of the original stacks discarded.
Now that it seems I am not the only one who has witnessed this behavior, what I am really trying to find out, is what is the definitive proper operation of this according to the Aperture group at Apple.
Assuming I have opened a Smart Album with images displayed, and no images are selected.
    Is the correct behavior:
    1) Selecting New Album makes a new Untitled Album (very quickly) with the identical contents of the Smart Album....OR...
    2) Selecting New Album makes a new Untitled Album (slowly) with NEW VERSIONS of the contents of the Smart Album. (Also, depending upon the number of images, typically brings up SBOD and makes Aperture unresponsive until it is complete.)
Now what I expected to happen was #1, as it is what happens when I select New Album when a project is selected. Given Apple's human interface creedo for intuitive operation, I think this is the most intuitive choice, because I can't think of a good reason I would want to double the number of versions of all files in an album, unless I expressly told the app to do this.
Could an Apple guy provide the definitive answer, please...
Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Creating mobile me album from smart album

I've created a smart album of approximately 450 photos (my 5 star photos) from an original album of about 2,000 photos. When I try to publish a mobile me album from my smart album of 450, it includes all 2,000 photos and won't let me do it. How do I do this???

    dana v wrote:
OK....I just tried working with an album that didn't have stacks, and I'm having the same problem. When I try and make a separate album, or mobile me album, with just the 5 star photos, it automatically includes all of the photos when creating the album. So I don't think that is always the problem.
Selecting a subset of images in an album and making a new album from just those images works as long as there are no stacks involved. Where did the images in the album come from?
Do this select a project that has no stacks in it. Note the number of images displayed at the bottom of the window. Select half note the number of images selected. Make a new album from the selection. How many images in the album?
Now in that album select half again and make an album, Again how many images in the new window?
I'm betting you still have stacks involved in this somewhere. You really need to step back and try the steps I've outlined. Start with a project with no stacks and see what you get.

  • AVI files - Search results different from Smart Album

I've noticed that when I use the iPhoto Search to filter all movies (.AVI files) that all my clips come up (eg. 700 clips in 2007). However, with a Smart Album I have set up to display the .AVI files, the last several weeks of clips seem to be missing (eg. 630 clips from the 2007 album). I've checked all the Smart Album criteria and they are correct. Is this a glitch in iPhoto or is there some other explanation?

    Two possibilities:
    1. There's something different in the later files that don't match the criteria of the search
    or
    2. Spotlight (as it is this that indexes the Library) is not working correctly. Try opening the Spotlight Preference Pane and go to the Privacy section. Drag the Pictures Folder in there, leave it a few moments and then drag it out again. This should force Spotlight to re-index the Folder.

  • Can't copy images from smart albums to mobile me gallery

    Folks,
I'm rather new to Aperture ... so my question might be a trivial one. I'm having trouble to drag images from a smart album to a Mobile Me album. The images simply do not end up in the gallery. I can, however, create a new gallery from a selection in a smart album, and I can drag images from their regular albums to the Mobile me gallery. Is this a restriction in Aperture 2.1.4?

    Same problem here.
    Is this just not possible?
Do I have to re-create a new MobileMe gallery every time I want to add photos?
    Maybe someone wrote a script?
Thanks for any reply answering one of those frustrating questions

  • Calendar from various albums?

I created a calendar using a particular album of photos, now I would like to add a few random photos from other albums, is this possible? I can't see any way to access photos other than those I originally selected. Thanks.

Just drag the photos you want to include from an event or album to the calendar project - it is just a "special" kind of album and works like all other albums

  • Dragging From Smart Albums Has No Effect

It appears to be impossible to drag versions from a smart album to, for example, a book or web gallery. In order to get such a version to appear in the target gallery or book, it appears to be necessary to drag from the a project or regular (not smart) album.
Have other people had this experience. This is an irritating bug.

    Hi Roy,
I am able to easily drag an image from a Smart Album to a book album or a web gallery.
If you continue to have trouble with this, you might want to delete the Aperture preference file (after noting your settings in Preferences) and/or rebuilding your Aperture Library by holding down Option and Command while starting Aperture. You'll want to backup your Library first.
BTW, it seems prudent not to call something a bug until it has been reported by several people.

  • Export versions from smart album

    Aperture 1.5.6 on Mac OS X 10.4.11
I have collected all my portraits from various jobs, and I would like to export all the portraits, but I cannot. ... I have even selected a single image from my Smart Portraits Album, and tried to export the single image. ... Nothing happens, really! Nothing happens. Aperture says that is "Verifying Files all the way up to 100%" ... Then nothing. ... Eventually the Beach Ball quits spinning, but nothing has happened regarding my assigned task.
It seems like I should be able to select the images in a smart album. (I can do that.)
And then choose an operation I wish to perform, like export versions, (I can do that too.)
And Aperture should do just what I asked. ... (No such luck for the export versions)

I believe the Verifying Images step is performed if any are referenced. It's trying to access files that are one other volumes, so it could be getting hung up on that step.
Try the same operation on images you know are managed and see if you get the same problem.

  • Iphoto not making events from recent import

I just recently imported about 100+ photos from my camera.  All of them appear in last import and I believe the last 12 months.  However it didn't make an event for the import which it has in the past.  Plus the images don't appear in "photos" either.

If only 12 photos, try manually deleting the photos from the iPhone's Camera Roll.
Then take a couple of photos and try again.
If this doesn't work and a Restore from your iPhone's backup doesn't work, the next step to take is restoring as a new iPhone or not from the backup.

  • Does iPhoto update a gallery from the changes to the album?

When I create a web gallery I first create an album and drag photos into to. I do this in part because I also use my Apple TV to play a slideshow of albums. When I publish a web gallery of an album it uploads it just fine.
But when I add a photo to the album, it doesn't make the change in iPhoto to the gallery or online. Do I have to make the changes in both locations? That seems like extra work. Doesn't iPhoto update the galleries from the albums that created them?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Only photos added to the actual web gallery in iPhoto will be added to the online gallery when updated. The album you use to create the gallery is not connected in any way except as a convenient way to group the photos initially and start the gallery. You don't need an album to create a gallery.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Can't edit smart album in iPhoto '11

The help files for iPhoto say to select a smart album in the source list and then select it item 'edit smart album' in the file menu.  But there is no such item in the File menu.
When I right-click on the album, the option 'edit smart album' is dimmed. Could it be that this album is not smart??  All my smart albums display the same misbehavior.

I think you may have suggested something that explains all this:  my iPhoto library is a product of a Merge operation by iPhoto Library Manager, which I use to combine photos originally imported on different computers in the family. It is possible that that program makes all smart albums into dumb albums!  I'll look up the documentation.

  • Smart album date range broken?

With earlier versions of iPhoto I've set up smart albums for date ranges, and then exported everything in the smart albums for archiving.  When I upgraded to Mavericks and iPhoto 9.5.1, several (but not all) of these appeared as empty.  I didn't worry about past albums too much since they've already been archived, and set up a new one from 1.1.2013 to 25.12.2013.  It worked OK at the time, but looking at it again today, it is also empty.  If I right-click, the "Edit Smart Album" option is greyed out.  But under "View | Smart Album Info", I see that the starting date is 1.1.0013.  I tried changing it to 2013, but the album remains empty, and when I look at info again, it has reverted to 1.1.0013.
Anyone else seeing something like this?  Any ideas what might be going on?
    Thanks for any help.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
