IPhoto 6 or other program - recommendations please

I'm looking for some feedback on iPhoto 6. I have a lot of photos(a lot) now separated into various libraries and am looking to upgrade my photo program from iPhoto 5.
My biggest complaint about iPhoto5 was that my library melted down and all of my data was lost. I was able to save the photos, but not the slideshows and keyword data which was painstakingly worked on for months.
So my questions are:
How is iPhoto 6 holding up for stability?
What other program(s) do you recommend for someone who has a lot of photos and would like to attach information to those photos for sorting purposes? (and why)
Any thoughts on other book services or is the book service provided by Apple making everyone happy?
Thanks in advance. - Dave

So is anybody excited about iPhoto 6 or having any problems with it either?

  • How do I access iPhoto files from other programs (i.e. PhotoShop Elements)

From within many programs, specifically PhotoShop Elements or Adobe Bridge tonight, I navigate to "iPhoto Library" and can not access the files within the library to use in these programs. I can get there from within Finder, just not other programs. This is extremely frustrating...can someone please help?

Of course - it is a database and you must use the correct access methods
and for a photo editor like PSE you also need to explain what you are trying to do
IF -- you want to edit photos within the iPhoto library then simply set PSE as the external editor in the iPhoto preferences - then you edit and save (not save as) and the database is automatically updated -- if you want to choose iPhoto or PSE as the editor then after setting PSE as the external editor set the external editor back to in main window and now normal editing will be in iPhoto but by right clicking on a photo in iPhoto you get a menu allowing you to use PSE for it
IF - you are generally asking and want the general answer - all open (or attach) dialogue windows have the media browser in the lower left - look under media ==>pictures ==> iPhoto but if you use this method you can not just return photos to iPhoto - you must save as and then import into iPhoto
click here for a general discussion on accessing your photos safely and correctly.

  • Opening iPhoto files in other programs

Does anyone know how to open a photo stored in my iPhoto library in another program such as Photoshop?
The only way I can think of is to open the iPhoto library through 'Show Package Contents' in Finder, selecting individual photos and 'Open With...' - 'Photoshop.'
Surely there is a simpler way???

Yes there is... the designed way:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.
There is never a need for you to enter the Library package in the FInder. Any time you do you risk damaging the Library.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Mavericks installation gave me an error message, I had to erase my HHD and now I don't have my iPhoto, iWeb, and other programs from iLife

I used to have iPhoto and iWeb, which I used constantly and now that I've installed the new software they are nowhere to be found. I looked for the programs in the App Store but they are charging for them.
Please, it's enough that I had to erase all my data from the HD and lost many of my files while doing it because the Mavericks update gave me a error message while installing.
    I upgrated from Mountain Lion.
    I have an iMac.
    Thanks.

I didn't have the applications backed-up... I was not expecting to lose them over an OS upgrade either... yeah, I know, it felt like a once-in-a-life-time experience when I encountered the message (or FATAL ERROR in windows terms).
I don't know where my original installation disc is, I have kids... I no longer have control over where stuff is anymore, especially a disc thingy LOL
Anyway... I lost my iMovie, iWeb, iPhoto... BTW iWeb is not even for sale on the app store anymore.
    Apple... really?

  • Network has been taken over by other program! please help...

    hello everyone
I have an eMac and the problem is that, everytime that I am trying to access the Network tab in System Preferences, I get a message that it's been taken over by another application!
Can anyone help me on that? Is it a matter of permissions or something else?
Any useful commands or software to fix the problem?
    Thanks in advance!

I have a broadband connection with BT Internet via the BT Home Hub (i.e. router), but I also still have an old dial-up account with OneTel. I have had no trouble at all with my BT broadband connection, but one contact of mine persistently fails to receive e-mails from me and I wanted to conduct some tests, so I decided (amongst other things) to try my OneTel dial-up service, which I haven't used for a long time.
I immediately ran into the problem of the 'Your network settings have been changed…' problem. I rebooted — no improvement. I ran Disk Warrior — no improvement. I then tried the idea of mouse-over-lock idea and it worked. But what is more remarkable is that after I disconnected from OneTel (i.e. closed the internal modem down) and then tried again, it worked straight away, without the persistent error message coming up. Thank you very much for the 'mouse-over-lock' suggestion. Whether, after I have shut my computer down and restarted, the 'repair' will still be operatve, or whether I shall have to go through the procedure again, I don't yet iknow.

  • Opening pictures in iPhoto from other programs

I'm wanting to use pictures from my iPhoto library in other programs-- i.e. Photoshop Elements or to upload to a website. When working from Photoshop Elements, when I go to File>Open>Pictures>iPhotoLibrary I get an error message. The only way I seem to be able to USE any of my photos stored in iPhoto is if I copy them to my "pictures" folder in the Finder and then use them. Of course, this means I am using double the space on my hard drive. There must be an easier way. What am I doing wrong?

So if I use Photoshop as an external editor, the Save function is only saving a copy? Does the copy go back into the original event this way?
When you set Photoshop (or an Image Editor) as an external and then go to edit the pic here's what happens:
    1. iPhoto makes a copy of the file and sends the copy to Photoshop
    2. Make your edits
    3. Save.
    4. The Edited version is returned to iPhoto and saved in the Modified Folder.
    5. A new thumbnail is made and replaces the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window
Thereafter if you want to get to the Original you have several options:
a: Photos -> Revert to Original - this destroys the modified version
b: Export using the File -> Export command, set the *Kind: Original*
    c. Any other form of export yields the edited version.
In Windows if one chooses save when editing in Photoshop, the original is overwritten,
This is true in Photoshop on the Mac too, the difference is you're using iPhoto, and it's +iPhoto making the copy+. Hence the 'Save As' to preserve your original is unnecessary.

    Hi stoph-man,
First of all, Welcome to the Apple Discussions Forums!
Frequently, when applications refuse to open or "quit unexpectedly" it is a font problem.
For a more detailed explanation, and suggestions for resolving the issue have a look at Dr. Smoke's, of the X-Lab, FAQ found @:

  • External H.D. and iPhoto library accessing in other programs

I put my iPhoto library onto an external hard drive. When I am in some software program that I want to import a photo it will give me the H.D. option but when I click on the iPhoto library it will not open it. Will the library only open when I am in iPhoto? If so, how do I access my photos or do I have to select some and put them on the desktop before I begin the other software program? Thank you, Janet

    Janet
Yes, the library is only for the use of iPhoto. Other apps are not allowed to surf the Library.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto. In 10.5's Mail, you can access the Library directly from the New Message Window
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
If the other application is an Image Editor:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

  • My iphoto library won't show when trying to select a photo for other programs?

I am having a problem when I try to select a photo or itunes song in Imovie or other programs. I get a window with grey lettering that says: "Open Itunes to populate this list" or "Open iphoto to see photos from your iPhoto library in this list.  I have tried relaunching programs and nothing appears. Seemed to start happening a while back after one of my system upgrades.

    What version of iPhoto?
    What version of the OS?
Sounds like an issue with the iLife integration, rather than the apps.

  • Iphoto keeps dropping out. Sometimes other programs do too such as Software Update. They other programs seem to drop randomly but iPhoto drops out constantly. Is there a solution?

iPhoto constantly keeps dropping out. Other programs do at times but iPhoto drops out constantly. Does anyone know what causes this?

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
