IPhoto 6 RAW import failure

I have a Canon G2 and tried to use iPhoto 6 to import photos from my camera. However after it tries for awhile it lists all of the .CRW files and indicates the file format is unsupported or etc...
Based on posts it looks like this is a common problem so I'm hoping for some advice...

This is an old question of mine. Not sure why but the G2's RAW format is not supported and this is documented.

  • RAW Import into iPhoto 4 - are pixelated results permanent?

OK, I made a mistake. Imported photos from Nikon D100 into iPhoto 4 but didn't "recall" I had RAW quality set (usually JPEG-normal). When I did get to viewing the Import in detail, I saw to my chagrin that the images are pixelated.
Can anyone advise if the images are recoverable? (I couldn't get Nikon 5 to perform magic or Photoshop CS. I have ordered iLife 6 to upgrade iPhoto...).
    Thank you in advance.

I did a search for "embedded thumbnails in Nikon RAW format" and found discussions that indicated .NEF files contain a low-resolution thumbnail. Since RAW support was probably introduced in iPhoto 5 or 6, I'm betting that iPhoto 4 is "seeing" the embedded thumbnail.
I can't confirm this since I have iPhoto 6 only but maybe you could go to the file in your iPhoto library folder and double-click it (open in Preview). If the image is of high quality, then the file was imported but iPhoto can't read the RAW part.
Also look at the size. It should be huge - maybe over 5 or 6 MB depending on the camera's megapixel rating. 3x-5x the jpeg size. If that's the case and the file extension is .nef and not .jpg, you probably have the whole file and updating to iPhoto 6 will display RAW in all its glory. If the file size is tiny (make sure you're not looking at the thumbnail file that iPhoto creates independently) then it's possible iPhoto never imported the full image.
Do you still have the photos on your card?

  • How do I import iPhoto raw (NEF) files into Lightroom 3.6?

how do I import iPhoto raw (NEF) files into Lightroom 3.6?

You will need an application that can convert those pcd files into one that iPhoto supports, mainly jpeg. GraphicConverter is supposed to support many, many formats and might just support the pcd. If so you could use it to convert them to jpegs.
There's an automator workflow that I've put into an application that will take many image files and convert them into jpeg with the RGB color profile. I've never tried it on the Kodak files but you can give it a try. It's called +*Convert to JPG and Embed sRGB profile*+ and can be downloaded from Toad's Cellar. Make a copy of a couple of files and see if it will work. If so then you can batch convert folders of the files at once by dragging them onto the application.
I believe GC can do batch conversions but am not familiar with the application.

  • Iphoto 6 Import Problem

    Howdy All,
Every time I import a set of photos into Iphoto, the import function locks up at the end of the import, thus requiring me to force quit the program (when I just simply try to quit, i get a window telling me the import process is still going on).
When I re-open the program, my photos are properly imported and I can go along my merry way, but it's frustrating having to do this (force quit & exit) every time. Any ideas what the cause of this is and what the solution is?
    Thanks All.

    Howdy.
A rebuild of the database might help. Hold the Option and Command keys while launching iPhoto. Check the first 3 choices and leave it to work for a while.
Those force quits could eventually corrupt your database file. To protect yourself, make a duplicate of the file called Library6.iPhoto which is inside your iPhoto Library folder. (Do this in Finder.) Move the copied file out of the iPhoto library. Then if your library does have a catastrophic failure, you can replace that file with the one you backed up and restore your library.

  • Raw imports fail if shooting in RAW+JPG

I've got a canon Xsi and set it to record RAW+JPG for some testing. I installed 10.5.4 which claimed to support RAW for the camera. But I could never get any of the images to import.
I've now figured out what is going on. I was using the USB cable to plug into the camera which uses the Image Capture framework to copy the images to the computer. There is a bug in the image capture framework that it always uses the size of the JPG file when it copies the file over, even when copying the RAW file. This has the effect of truncating the RAW file, causing the RAW conversion to fail.
To work around this problem, use a card reader that causes the card to mount as a disk drive. You'll then get the whole RAW file and the image will import properly.
    I've filed a bug.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Also if you just shoot RAW I believe iPhoto will import correctly from the camera. Since iPhoto creates a jpg file for each raw that is imported you will still have both types of files in iPhoto. Since I don't shoot raw I don't know if there's any difference between the jpg created by the camera and the one created by iPhoto when importing RAW only. If you get a chance to test it out and report that would be of interest to others. Thanks for the feedback.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Lost ability in iphoto to import photos from my iphone 5

    Hi
When I open iPhoto, I am no longer seeing my iPhone 5 that is connected to the computer.
I tried changing phones and cables and have the same problem.
I recently deactivated a Dropbox setting (not in iPhoto) for importing photos.  I also just updated to iTunes 11.0.5 and the RAW update 4.08.
Not sure if any of these are relevant changes, but I did all about the same time.
Is there a way to set iPhoto to recognize my iPhone is connected to the computer and prompt me to import photos from the phone
    Thanks

Does it show as a device in the finder?

  • RAW import won't work after OS upgrade

I used to import my digi-cam (Ricoh GX-100) RAW files into iPhoto without any problem, but since I updated to 10.4.11 iPhoto doesn't recognize these RAW .dng files anymore. What can be done about this? Strangely, this particular camera never has been on the supported camera list for iPhoto, but why did RAW import work before and why doesn't it now?
I should add perhaps that the cause for the malfunction could also derive from the usage of Onyx (which I downloaded from the apple-site), which I used for system optimization by clicking on the "prebinding" option - however, most likely this has nothing to do with above problem
    thx

    zoranT:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. A lot of users have experienced importing problems after upgrading to Leopard and not just with RAW files.
Since OnyX is not Leopard compatible, there's a beta version available that is, it might have a bearing but I wouldn't bet on it. Try the beta version to re-optimize and see if that helps.
See bdorf's post this this topic on how he fixed his importing issue: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6181481#6181481. He hasn't gotten back to me on how he re-installed Leopard but I'm guessing it was an Archive and Install.
    Happy New Year

  • Raw Import Preview from EOS 30d

    Hi All,
I've got a question regarding RAW importing from a Canon EOS 30D. There are no previews only blank boxes with the image no. at the bottom. If I'm importing jpegs from the camera it's fine I can see the preview image. Also, is it possible to tell Aperture not to import duplicate images? Kind of like iphoto does where it gives you the option of ignoring images on the card that are already in the library.
    cheers
    M.

    Mike,
Thanks for your response. The camera was directly
connected to my MBP in both instances (with Aperture
and Lightroom). I do, however, have a SanDisk card
reader on order. Will see if that makes a difference.
Just an update: got the card reader yesterday and did a couple of RAW shoots to test-import previews showed up right away. Hopefully this has fixed the problem.

  • Elements 10 Organizer Import Failures

OK - I have 13,000 .jpg files to import on a mac from iPhoto
After about 10,000 files I get Import Failure with nothing imported

Again after about 10,000 files I get Import Failure
But now I have the name of the file that failed
So I just import from the beginning to just before the bad .jpg
Then I start importing from the next file to the end

OK - after about 3 hours in Organizer hell I'm done.
The interesting thing is the Editor can edit these files.
So there are two bugs here.
    1.  The Organizer should be able to input a file the editor can edit and
    2.  The Organizer should just make a list of the files it can't import and not give up
P.S.  Had the same problem with Elements 9

If you are using iPhoto and Aperture do you really need Organizer?
It’s possible to set up the Editor as the external app.

  • IPhoto - RAWs - PSE3

Well hey there, one problem solved another rears it's ugly head.
Now, what I would like to do is establish a decent raw workflow but first must figure out what to do with my library. It's a mixture of Jpeg and Raw files that I previously installed into iPhoto. Ideally I would like to remove just the Raws (easily identifiable) and send them through a 3rd party converter (C1Le) > PSE3 if required > save Jpegs to iPhoto. Is there an easy way to do this without deleting all Raws currently (I do have backups) and sending iPhoto nuts? I believe OSX does not have the facility to have converted them in the first place and as such don't want to end up with dublicates but retrospectivly use my own converter. Point is, I don't want to end up with a corrupted modified folder as they will all be reimported after adjustments. Would I be better of to just delete them, import into C1Le through my backup CD > convert > PSE3 > back into iPhoto as a fresh Jpeg.
Once this is achieved, I will probably just have a dedicated folder sitting on the desktop where all raws can be stored (using image capture) to await import into a raw converter. But for know............
    Thanks all.
PS Of course, Aperture would be ideal for what I want to do but we can't afford it and my wife really likes iPhotos integration with other apps. Besides, who knows at what speed it will run at on a X600XT !!!!!!!!!!?

    argento:
I don't use RAW but are they stored in the Originals folder like the original jpgs are? If so, just copy the Originals folder to the desktop and run your conversion software on the RAW's there. If there are jpgs in there also you can remove them via the Finder before running the convertor. Then delete the raw files from within iPhoto and import the converted jpg versions from the Desktop.
    Do you Twango?

  • IPhoto Raw & Jpeg upload question

So I have begun photography recently, and am relatively interested in photography. I use a RAW + jpeg method so I can keep both raws to process and photoshop, but also the jpeg counterpart for easier sorting. Is there a way that I can configure iPhoto to split the import by file type? As I have to do this manually (with dual copies of each, in different file formats and composed differently, of course)

I use a RAW + jpeg method so I can keep both raws to process and photoshop, but also the jpeg counterpart for easier sorting.
    No
    But it is unnecessary
Set PS as your external editor for iPhoto and import into iPhoto - it creates a JPEG for display
iPhoto can find your photos in a snap if you keyword them and add faces and places
Or better yet move up to Aperture for better RAW processing

  • Yellow RAW Imports

    Hi folks,
I've been searching for answers on 'why' all my RAW photos are imported from the camera (Canon G6) into iPhoto as nasty, yellow monsters. It was mentioned briefly in this thread, but I still don't know why it happens. The problem is varied, but here are the high points:
    1) RAW images imported into iPhoto are lossy and yellow. Using iPhoto to edit the RAW pics, I have to crank up the blue temperature to even them out. However, when that very same RAW image is right-clicked and opened with PhotoShop it's crystal clear, balanced, etc.
    2) Older RAW photos (pre-iPhoto 6 imports) are crystal clear when I revert the jpeg to original and edit the RAW photo in iPhoto. Why are newly imported pics yellow and lossy yet old ones are not? The old ones used to be yellow monsters in older versions of iPhoto, but seem to be fixed now.
    3) In speaking to a new iPhoto 6 user today, she is not having this yellow monster issue with importing RAW pics (she has a Nikon D70). So this appears to be a problem that not everyone is having, which must mean there is something that I can do to eliminate it.
Is there some data file I can eliminate that will fix this? Some old .plist or something? I've killed the current .plist of iPhoto but the yellow thing remains on newly imported RAW pics. Any information at all to help me understand this obvious conversion issue would be great. Thanks in advance.
Follow-Up: I should note that I created another user account on my Mac, fired off a bunch of RAW pics in my G6 and imported them into iPhoto on the new user account. No yellow monster pics; nice and clean. My issue then seems relegated to my user account. But what do I change/delete/fix besides the .plist I've already trashed with no results?
Message was edited by: Jim Nee

I chatted with AppleCare, who passed me onto the iLife support group. They verified the issue was system wide and want me to reinstall iPhoto 6 ala carte. I hope to do that this evening. Meanwhile, here is a screen shot of the issue:
    http://www.neepeople.com/layout/picture2.jpg
The upper left window is PhotoShop's RAW conversion program; the bottom right is an editing window in iPhoto. Both windows were generated by right-clicking on the same thumbnail in iPhoto.

  • When using Iphoto to import photo from existing folder, what happens if I delete the photo in Iphoto ? Will the original file in the folder be deleted too?

When using Iphoto to import photo from existing folder to iphoto, what happens if:
    1. I delete that photo in iphoto? will the original file in the folder be deleted too ?
    2.  when importing, does the hard disk store 2 versions of the photo, hence occupying additional space in the harddisk?

1 - no  --  iPhoto only manages fiel within the iPhoto library - it does not ever do anything with files outside the library
2 - No idea what you are asking - by default (and strongly recommended) iPhoto copies the original to the iPhoto library and you delete the source file outside the iPhoto library - iPhoto alwasy has at least two versions of every photo and some times three - it always have the original, a thumbnail and once a photo is modified a preview - this is not optional - if it is not what you want then iPhoto is not the correct progrtam to be using for phopto management
