IPhoto 6 solution to missing photos in edit/book view when thumbnail shows

Hi all, since this seems to be quite wide spread with iPhoto 6 users, I thought I'd make sure that you all get the solution that seems to work for the following:
Problem: iPhoto 6 does not open your photo for editting but you can still see it's thumbnail, or the photo is not shown in a book but it does show its thumbnail.
Cause: at this stage, I don't know for certain but I have a feeling it is to do with other applications changing the default opening app for images (perhaps Adobe software).
Solution:
1) In Finder, click File, New Smart folder and set the following options:
Folder 'iPhoto Library', Kind: Images, Size: Greater than 100KB
2) Then, when search has found all your images, select them all and press the 'Get Info' button.
3) Select 'Open with' and change it to 'Preview'. This may take a while if you have a lot of photos but let it finish.
4) Then click 'Change All...' and select yes.
That's it. Now open iPhoto and it should all work ok.(hopefully!).

I did that a couple of days ago. But after I while the problem re-appeared. I used Photoshop for editing, so probably that is one of the issues.
So after several times of trying this solution, I decided to go the hard way and export the corrupted files to the desktops, delete them from iphoto, and re-import them back. That seems to do the job...Frustrating, I know, but so far effective

Iphoto not displaying front cover photos in my book project

After installing iphoto 11 the front cover page in my book project will not display the photos or the text, how ever the text will display if clicked on and then only 1 line at a time. The photos on the other hand will not. When the photo boxes are clicked on, the border will highlight and the photo in the thumbnail list will be outline and the word "COVER" will appear when the curser is over the photo. The back cover is fine.
When the book is previewed the front cover is blank just as it appears in the working process.
Is there a fix for this? If the book is ordered will the photos magically in the hard copy?

Be sure to preview the book as described in this Apple document before ordering: iPhoto, Aperture: Previewing an order in iPhoto or Aperture. If the PDF file is has no errors continue and order. Save the PDF file that is created for comparing to the printed copy when it arrives.

IPhoto won't open/display photos in edit

I have an up-to-date version of iPhoto in my iMac. It has been working fine for years. About a month ago, pictures stopped displaying when I click on one to view it alone, either to see a bigger version or to edit it. The pictures are all viewable in thumbnails, both in the "Events" and "Photos" views, but when I click on an individual photo, it expands out in a new window for a split second and then disappears leaving an empty black window. All the photos in that event are visible at the bottom of the screen as if a slideshow is in progress -- but no big photo in the window. I've tried opening photos by clicking "Edit" instead of clicking on the photo itself, and the same thing happens. I can still import and export photos and I can rotate them from the thumbnail view. I just can't open them for a closer look or editing. Any ideas?

Soe folks have fixed this black screen with a simple restart of the Mac.
There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
1. Permissions in the Library: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
2. Minor Database corruption: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
3. A Damaged Photo: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). (On iPhoto 11 this option is under the File -> Reveal in Finder.) Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
4. A corrupted iPhoto Cache: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/ Library/ Caches...
5. A corrupted preference file: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
If none of these help: As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

IPhoto 2.0.1: Missing photos

My iPhoto photos are missing. I've had some other weirdness with other applications, e.g. Mail and Safari, but I've resolved those issues on my own and with help from other forum angels. Now I'd like some help finding my photos that used to be in iPhoto, please.

Upgraded to IPhoto 6: Crashes and missing photos

Recently upgraded to IPhoto 6. I've had all previous incarnations of Iphoto and never had any issues up until now. After install, I was prompted to "rebuild my thumbnail cache", which I did. It crashed halfway through and I sent a note to Apple. Tried it again. Crashed again. Noticed that IPhoto had created 3 new rolls comprised of photos that were 3 to 4 years old, probably from the first IPhoto. In doing that, it lost my last three rolls, possibly more but I haven't noticed specifically. I had backed up my library using Retrospect to an external hard drive so I have all of the photos safely. How should I correct/fix this? Also, how can I get rid of all of my thumbnails. I absolutely hate them, they are useless clutter. Thanks in Advance.

Did you figure out how to get iPLM up and running and rebuild the library?
Can you describe how you went about copying the other library folder over, where you placed it and how you went about importing?
You should just try placing that library folder in your Pictures folder, launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed and, when asked, locate and select that newly copied library folder.
HOWEVER, after copying it to your Pictures folder and before launching iPhoto download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, substituting your account name for mine. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field.
See if that will help.

Why do iPhoto export slideshows have missing photos

Hello Everyone
I am trying to export slideshows so I can burn to DVD later using iDVD. But as i review my exported sideshow as a .mov file, it appears to have left out photos and is incomplete, it plays out the full music tracks but it simply is a white screen. Very dissapointing after waiting so long for the export to complete. This has occurred a few times.

IPhoto 5.0.4 - Missing photos and subfolders jumbled

Hi. I am having trouble opening photos in iPhoto. The thumbnails are squashed out of shape and when I double click on the image, a different photo appears. There are also blank squares in place of some thumbnails. All the photos in my library are also out of order, most of my subfolders are now empty and if there are photos in a subfolder, they do not correspond to the folder name. Everything appeared to be okay two weeks ago.
Any help in retrieving my lost photos and resetting the subfolders would be appreciated.

Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). A Finder Window should open with the file selected. Does it?

How to open a zip file of photos on Mac Book Pro when it cannot find or fix alias

I do a home photo editing business. One of a my clients sent me a disc that she zipped to compress because there were a lot of pictures on it. When I try to open it on my Mac Book Pro I keep getting an error message that it cannot find alias and what program do I want to use to open it. It also gives me an option to "fix alias" but it doesn't seem to work. What am I doing wrong? Why can't I open zip files on my Mac Book Pro? I should probably mention that the client also uses a Mac Book Pro and her pictures were in her iPhoto before she zipped them on a disc.

I did copy it to my desktop, but it still won't let me open it. I think the file on the disc might be corrupt or something like that though the cd itself checks out fine as far as viruses go. I was able to verify the disc, but that's about it. My husband tried it on his iMac and we have the same issue. It's unzipping the folder, but won't let us open the folder on both the Mac Book Pro or the iMac by double clicking, going to file/open or right clicking. It just keeps saying the same message as I posted above. I think I'm just going to have the client put the pictures on either a memory card or a USB memory stick so she won't have to compress the files for zipping purposes. It's been too frustrating trying to open this folder on this cd she gave me. She said she created/zipped the cd on her Mac Book Pro but it sure won't open on mine.

Missing Photo Error

I have been attempting to correct a missing photo error to export to .pdf and send to blurb. For whatever reason, I use the Find Missing Photo option in Library and return to the book module to export but this keeps happening. Any suggestions?

I don't think the thumbnail was the solution, but it got me thinking. First I made sure that I did have a full res photo in iphoto and tried re-inserting it. No go. Then, I deleted the pages that had had the photo. No go. Somewhere there was a reference to the missing photo I wasn't getting. So, I created a new site and dragged each webpage to the new site. Once all the existing pages were in the new site, I deleted the old site name. That did it. No more missing photo message and no errors when uploading to the internet. I then renamed the site to the name I used to have.

How to transfer iPhoto library to the new Photo library?

I just bought a new iMac and I am trying to transfers my iPhoto library to the new computer. It seems that the new OS Yosemite do not use iPhoto anymore, its now Photos. My current iPhoto is under OS Snow Leopard. Any tips?

Maybe try it this way this is what I did with mine because I did not migrate and didn't know about that either.
Photos application for Mac Instructions that might help!
On your iPad,iPhone keep the iCloud on in settings for Photos.
if you have not opened the New Photos application yet to have it transfer your photos from iPhoto let it Transfer the Pictures.
once you have all the pictures from iPhoto to Photos then in Photos go to Preferences
there is general and iCloud tab and go to the iCloud and only uncheck the iCloud button that will make it so it doesn't sync with your iPhone and iPad for Photos.
Then in Photos go up to View and press show sidebar because with that view you can move your pictures easier to albums snd delete or move any pictures or make new albums
For Duplicates if you have a big pile in a row and I mean not like every other picture of the same pictures on the keyboard Hold down the shift button. or the other way is to Hold down the Command buttom that is right by the space bar then on the trackpad or mouse click once on the picture you want to delete and do a bunch at a time then on the last picture of that pile either right click the picture and delete or go up to the edit button which is next to file on the top left and click delete in edit.
when you are all done with moving around your pictures or whatever go back to Preferences and turn on iCloud and make sure you have the optimize Mac Storage and then you are done! I hope this makes sense and works for you! here are the 2 pictures I'm talking about in settings.

Explain finding missing photos by copying to another disk and back

I would appreciate if someone can explain what is happening to my iPhoto file under Lion.
Here are the sequence of events in my iPhoto library of about 5000 photos and about 44GB of data:
1. I noticed that several photos would not display when I clicked on the thumbnail. I got a black triangle indicating no photo present.
2. I found this to be a random occurence in many events.
3. I copied my iPhoto file to an external disk.
4. Then I used the rebuild database option with all options checked.
5. The resulting database was rebuilt with many problems. The missing files were still missing and most of the thumbnails had a different orientation than the base photo. The base photo was basicly correct and the thumbnal was randomly upside down or right or left.
6. I started correcting the thumbnails and after several hours I decided that I would never get through them and the problems with the original database weren't as bad.
7. So I chucked the rebuilt database into the trash.
8. And then copied the original database back from the eternal disk.
9. Then when I got into iPhoto all my photos were in the correct orientation and!!!!!! all of the missing photos were present again with their thumbnails. There were no problems in the database.
So what happened? WHy did this fix the problem? What I did was a straight finder system copy from one disk to the other and back.

I now have to decide wheter to use this new database or try to fix the old one.
There is no way to fix the old one. That databse file is unstable. It would be unwise to invest further effort in it.
My suggestion would be
a: restore from a known-good back up if you have one
Or
b: Stick with the rebuilt library and try recover the missing 69 pics from the damaged library and import them to the new one.

IPhoto cannot convert Tiff to Jpeg after editing.

I have a set of very high resolution scans made on an 11" x 17" Epson scanner that I would like to edit in iPhoto. iPhoto imports these files (which are 450 MB or so in size) (sometimes) allows me to edit them - - and sometimes it crashes when I attempt to edit these files - - but when I attempt to export them as maximum resolution jpegs it says it can't do so. Once I've quit iPhoto and then start it again the edited image disappears when I double click it. My guess is that file is simply too large for iPhoto.

I Additionally, when I convert the file using the save as command in Preview, I can convert it into a jpeg or jpeg2000 and it is much smaller (71GB for example), but the same anomalous behavior occurs when I finish editing the file and quit iPhoto- - when I double click the thumbnail, the full sized image appears briefly and then disappears. leaving in its place a completely black window. I would be most appreciative of any insights.
