Iphoto 6 storage

Using iPhoto 6 w/Tiger (I hope this is the right forum for this question).  Looking at the iPhoto library, I see folders for "modified' and for 'originals'.... I don't need to keep the original versions of photos I've edited, only the ones that actually appear in the application.  May I delete any of the content of these folders?  It's a substantial amount of files (about 2 G).  Thanks

No.  You may want to burn it to DVD twice if they are taking up too much space on your hard drive, and properly archive the DVDs, and only use media by Verbatim, Taiyo-Yuden, or Ritek that is prepackaged in jewelcases.  Do not label the discs other than using the jewelcase inserts.  Sharpies and other pens can damage the writable layer inside the disc, and hasten their aging.  Every couple months or so verify they are in good condition by seeing if the entire library is readable again.  If you find they are deteriorating, burn another disc.

  • IPhoto storage and backup

I am looking for recommendations on where to locate an iPhoto '11 (v9.5) library and how to back up this library.
I have a new 27" iMac with a 3 TB fusion drive.  I also have a Synology DS412+ system on my home network for Time Machine backups.  My 770 GB iPhoto (v9.4.3) library is currently on an external WD FireWire drive.  I shoot photos in RAW format.  I use Aperture as my photo editing tool.
Does it make sense to put the iPhoto library on an external Thunderbolt drive like a WD My Book VelociRaptor or a Drobo 5D?  If I put the library on an external drive, is there a way to back this up using Time Machine and the Synology system?
I would like photos I am currently working with to have fast read/write times for editing.  Older photos could be on a slower-access system.
I would also like to be able to share the iPhoto library with my family.  Is there a drive solution that makes it easier for everyone to access the photos from inside our home network?  I also have 50 GB of storage on iCloud.
Thank you.  I realize I'm asking a lot of questions at the same time.

iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). And as Aprture and iPhoto use the same Library, that's true of Aperture Libraries too.
That library needs to be either a start up disk or a wired link to an external USB, Firewire or Thunderbold drive. Network drives (NAS) or, hard drives accessed via a network are not suitable locations.
    See this article
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5168
for more. Note also the comment:
“Additionally, storing the iPhoto library on a network rather than locally on your computer can also lead to poor performance or data loss.”
So, whatever drive you choose it needs to fit those characteristics.
The same for the back up, of course.

  • Exporting photos from iPhoto - storage space

This might be a silly question, but I'm not very familiar with how iPhoto works.
If I export a photo from iPhoto and save it to a folder in Finder, am I doubling up on storage space?
I do this because I prefer to arrange my photos/albums in folders like I use to on a windows computer, and I don't really like how iPhoto groups and organizes my photos.

Yes, you will be doubling the amount of disk space used.  iPhoto is based on a SQUL database like Aperture and uses virtual folders,  albums, keywords, descriptions, titles  to group and keep track of photos.  It's not a file based system like you would have in the Finder. In iPhoto a photo can be grouped in multiple albums, slideshows, books, etc. and not take up any additional space on the  hard drive.
Read Terence Devlin's post in this topic as he details how to manage photos in iPhoto more succinctly that I could: Better way to organize my images?: Apple Support Communities.
If you want to keep using a file system then iPhoto is not the application for you.  Maybe look into Picasa for Mac or one of the professional DAM (digital asset management) apps like Media Pro 1.

  • Help with IPHOTO storage vs. Google Drive

I presently store all my photos in Finder in a folder call Main Photos.  I have tried to avoid synching to Iphoto, but the photos are showing up in Iphoto now.  My question is, are the photos being stored twice?  I have 110 GIG of photos ... help please.
I don't know if I am wasting 100 G of storage and I want to back up my photos, which is why I use Google Drive.
    Thank you,
    Jeffrey

If you didn't uncheck the option to copy images to the iphoto library and you did import them into iphoto then yes they are being stored twice.
Before you import anything into iphoto you need to uncheck that option. It is in the iphoto preferences on the advanced page right at the top.
Go in and uncheck that option then close iphoto. Then open a finder window and delete the iphoto library file in the pictures folder in your user name folder. Then you can re-import your images into iphoto and it will leave your images where they are instead of copying all of them and just make a data base of the images.

  • IPhoto storage management on iPad

The iPad storage is quickly filled up with photos and journals.
Is there a way to store iPhoto journals on iCloud only to free up space on my iPad?

Always sync photos to your computer for archiving.  After doing that you can delete photos on the device.  Not sure about jounals.

  • Iphoto storage help!

Hi everyone I am in desperate need of an answer please! I hope this makes sense.
I purchased a MacBook Air 1 year ago and can't imagine ever going back.
I own a childcare business and I need to store photo's on there everyday to docuent evidence of learning. With this being said it takes up alot of space on my hardrive.
I have been getting a warning that there is no memory left and then today it said that I couldn't even save a file.
I have a time machine so all my files are backed up to that but not sure if that backs up iPhoto.
I know I could put all my photo's on the Time machine however the reason I wanted the MacBook Air was I liked the iPhoto as it helps me manange the photo's under each child's name. It would be an impossible task otherwise. If I did save all my photo's to time machine it would undo all the names and I would loose all the fuctions of iphoto. I know I could open in Iphoto but essentially that would just be popping them back on there. I have gone through and delete what I can but only have 7.11 GB left. I have moved all my files of at this stage but I need to be able to have my computer running well at all times.
    Here are my Questions.
Is ther a way I can move my photo's of my computer and be able to open them in Iphoto on the timemachine so all my named photo's stayed named etc.?
I have include a pic of my storage and as you can see! I am almost out of time! I have so much work to do and really need to sort this out!
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thankyou for your help.
    Tracey

You get a USB external dirve and put the Library on it.
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
Time Machine is a piece of software. You don't put anythng "on" Tim Machine.

  • IPhoto storage not disappearing when I delete photos! HELP

    Hi all,
My iPhone 4S only has 16 GB and I wanted more storage. I noticed that my photos app costs 2.1 GB so I decided to transfer my photos to my MacBook Air via iPhoto. I then deleted all of those photos on my iPhone. So I still had my photos but on my macbook instead of my phone. I assumed that my 2.1 GB on my photos app would disappear and would say like 0 GB used but it still stays at 2.1 GB being used in my photos app yet I deleted all my photos!!!
I hope somebody knows why this has happened or knows how to fix it.

Thanks everyone for their answers, I tried both you suggestions but still no luck. I then turned off photos in iCloud and it worked. Also it says in my usage...
used: 3.2 GB and available 9.5 GB, that adds up to 12.7 GB so... what about the rest of my 16 GB what happened to the other 3.3 GB?
    Thanks,

  • IPhoto storage on WD My Book Live

I have a WD My Book Live backup storage.
I followed the procedure and did a backup of my iMac.
When I access WD backup from my iMac or from my MacBook or iPad, the document folder and then a document opens instantaneously.
If I open the backup iPhoto folder the iPhoto template appears on the desktop screen and I can then go off and make a cup of coffee while it loads.
To change to a differant album the loading takes for ages.
    Can you help?
    Henry

It's very simple. You can't have an iphoto Library on Networked storage.
Put it on a USB/Firewire?Thunderbolt disk directly attached to the Mac and formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    Problem solved.

  • IPhoto Storage Location

I am running out of space on my internal HD and would like to store photos on an external HD. I want to keep the icon where it is in the FINDER but, the storage location to be elsewhere to free up space. Tell me how to change the storage location of the files.

I tried to make an alias of my iPhoto Library and drag the actual file to the external HD I want to use. FYI: This DID NOT WORK.
Did you try the correct way that Neil described?
You simply quit iPhoto, drag the iPhoto library (by default in you pictures folder) intact as a single entity to the external drive, depress the option key and launch iPhoto and select the iPhoto library on the external drive - fully test it and then you can delete the iPhoto library on the internal drive (I suggest testing one more time prior to emptying the trash)

  • How to move iPhoto storage folder ?

    Hi,
    I'm a new MAC user.
Here's my set-up : I've got a MacBook Pro connected to an Aiport Extreme, and I plugged a WD 1Tb drive to the Airport Extreme.
So I set up iTunes preference so my music library is directly on the Terabyte drive. Everytime I add something to iTunes it gets on the Tb drive.
I'm looking desesperatly for such a feature in iPhoto '08 !!
In the importation options, I only see two checkboxes but I couldn't find nowhere to change where the photo will be saved. Of course I could uncheck that box and just add my folders but I like the way iPhoto sorts the file, just like iTunes.
    Anybody can help please ?
    Thanks !!

    Uge
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
However I must point out that many posters on here have problems with iPhoto and wireless connections - iPhoto is a much more complex app than iTunes, it doesn't like the Samba protocol, it has definite issues on disks that are not formatted MacOS extended (Journalled) and folks also find it very slow.

  • IPhoto - storage or just referencing?

It seems that all physical manipulation of photos, creating of new albums etc had to be done in the Photo App, not iPhoto.  No problem with that.
But does that mean that iPhoto is just a reference to the photos that are stored on the iPad?  Surely it doesn't duplicate photos does it?
This is an important question in the context of the problem some users (myself included) are experiencing whereby iPhoto is creating multiple copies of images - covered in more detail on other threads here.
Can someone please provide a better explain the relationship between the Photo App and iPhoto?

There's a nice review of iPhoto for iOS here
    http://www.macworld.com/appguide/app.html?id=1189243&expand=true
But it doesn't address your question directly. Seeing the different photo albums containing the same photo I suspect the iPhoto stores the recipe of changes one makes to the photo and does not actually copy the entire photo over again. At least that's my hunch.

  • Iphoto storage

So I was looking at the iphoto folder in my home folder and noticed an original folder and a modified folder. I looked in there and found stuff in the modified folder that was also in the original folder. Now the only modification I have done to some files is to enhance them.
So my questions are this. If I say enhance a picture then later after saving it want to go back is there an easy way to just undo it or do I have to find the original file by name through the finder?
Also should I or should I not remove the original files? I take it the actual files you view in iPhoto are stored in the data folder so why does it create duplicates in the other folders. I just don't want all my pictures taking up space because there are duplicates in other folders.
    BTW iphoto 6

    Hi spectre,
Two Apple kbs for you to read first!
Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto library folder
    About the iPhoto Library folder
You can always control click on an edited photo in iPhoto and scroll to "revert to original"
iPhoto 6 Library folder in the Finder
As you can see the structure is now related to rolls. Rolls are created for each folder you import and each import session from a camera.
It is very easy to change the names of film rolls within iPhoto to make them easier to find images within. Open the info panel in iPhoto by clicking on the "i" icon. Once it is opened, click on the roll title in the viewing window.
Click on the word "title" in the info pane and type in your new title. I like to use a date and text format such as 12/25/05 Christmas at Mom's, 1/05/06 my birthday, etc. Once the roll names are changed within iPhoto, they are also changed within the Finder, making it easy to locate an image.
When importing from a camera, make sure you name the roll with a date and text before the import.

  • IPhoto storage problems

Can anyone give me any advice about changing the settings in iPhoto to store photos in a better way? At the moment the only way to access (i.e. copy) a photo is to go into the Masters files and each upload seems to have a different folder.  Is there a better way of doing this? Any advice appreciated.

Perhaps you might try some of the ways iPhoto offers for accesing your files.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Simple iPhoto Storage Question

My photos take up a lot of hard drive space. I have an iPhoto manager application and 10 iPhoto Libraries in the Applications Folder. To clear hard drive space, can I simply back up these iPhoto Libraries to an external hard drive and then delete many of the same photos on the MacBook Pro, thereby preserving them ? If my Mac Book Pro crashed, would the photos be there on the external hard drive ? Or are there other files/folders that have to be backed up as well ? Cache or other such things ? I am not computer savvy and do not understand the iPhoto way of storing images. Thanks.

To clear hard drive space, can I simply back up these iPhoto Libraries to an external hard drive and then delete many of the same photos on the MacBook Pro, thereby preserving them ?
yes - Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag each iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash) - repeat until all desired libraries are moved.
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
If my Mac Book Pro crashed, would the photos be there on the external hard drive ?
Yes - but you still need a backup because when your external drive crashes (and it will) you will lose them without a backup
Or are there other files/folders that have to be backed up as well ? Cache or other such things ? I am not computer savvy and do not understand the iPhoto way of storing images. Thanks.
You need not worry - just drag the entire iPhoto library at one time - you can not move it in pieces

  • Iphoto storage space

Disclaimer:  Please excuse what some consider "stupid" questions. I'm a disabled Marine with cognitive/memory issues. That being said, sometimes I can't get what you consider obvious regardless of my background so I am forced to sometimes ask the simple questions hoping for a simple response that I can remember. If you have screenshots or something visual it really does help. Thanks for understanding and helping.
My question is:  Based on everything I've read iPhoto stores all photos in a library file, I get that.  You can store the library on your hdd or an external hdd. Got it.  What I'm trying to find out is if I switch to iphoto is there anyway I can use its features and keep all my photos organized without them being placed in the library. I don't have the hdd space to fit my considerable years worth of photos.
The VA purchased me a Mac Pro because frankly the PC is simply too complicated in the way they do things and Mac's are...well, I don't have to explain to a Mac user. The problem is they didn't get me enough space to do the things I'm trying to do and of course they didn't switch my wife to a mac so I am trying to make this all work together.
Currently I'm transferring them all to a network drive (at home netgear thing I had to buy but I could only afford one of the hdd in it.) so that my wife can access them as needed for her projects (scrapbooking, stuff to hang around the house, etc.).  The drive will hold photos, documents, etc.
Also, regarding Picasa - I really don't want to use it. The nature of it and its tendency to push online sharing makes me very uncomfortable.  I believe apple products are better than Googles so I'm trying to make iPhoto work.
Please ask if you're not sure what I'm trying to do I know I can sound confused sometimes. Thank you in advance for you responses and assistance.
    Semper Fi!
