  • Iphoto 9 thumbnails disappeared

    Iphoto 09 problem.
I have 166,000 pics in my Iphoto 09.  All was fine until one day the thumbnails were gone. Iphoto did crash often. How do I fix it?  I have been backing up, but now the back up shows nothing since the thumbnail issue.  Anyone know a solution?  Apple Walnut Creek Store just gave my a rude cold shoulder.  HELP HELP HELP    I have an Imac version 10.6.8  the pics are there, but no thumbnails, just blank.
Another weird thing on this Mac.  Where it says start up disk it just says:  Startup Disk /
Is that suppose to be like that?
Thank you  thank you thank you for  any help

You have less that 5 GB of free space - that is your problem - unless you have 10GB or more you will have problems including lost data
You need to either clean up your drive (probably not possible to get enough spce doing this) or run iPhoto on an external drive (must be formatted Mac OS extended (journaled)  ) - to do that quit iPhoto, drag the iphoto library intace as a single entity to the external drive, depress teh option key, launch iPhoto and test the new location - you can rebuild there - once everything is good and working perfectly then trash the library on the main drive - test one more time prior to emptying the trash

  • How can I delete the iPhoto Video Thumbnails in iMovie?

It's been a while since I've used iMovie, and when I opened the application tonight, I got the following message:
"iMovie needs to generate thumbnails for the videos in your iPhoto library. This process may take several minutes.
You can postpone this operation by clicking Later, but your iPhoto videos will be unavailable until the next time you restart iMovie."
I accidentally hit NOW, and the process began. When I realized it had used about 5 GBs of space, I force quit iMovie, but the disk space was not reclaimed. I need this space back now... I can import the iPhoto videos later. How can I undo the generated iPhoto video thumbnails? There was no project generated, and so no folder with the thumbnails in them. Where are they located? I would like to delete the iPhoto video thumbnails within iMovie, but preserve the thumbnails for other projects. And of course I would like to be sure that I keep the videos themselves in iPhoto - I definitely do not want to lose the videos there. Thanks for your help.

The latest incarnation of iMovie doesn't offer the 'Export with Quicktime'-options, the previous versions did.

  • How Do I Update iPhoto's Thumbnail/Preview?

    Hello,
I use a referenced iPhoto library, that is, the photos are NOT kept in iPhoto's database, but simply referenced in their location on my hard drive.
If I edit a referenced photo elsewhere, say in Lightroom or Photoshop, and then look at the photo in iPhoto, the thumbnail does not update. If I double-click the image in iPhoto (say to edit it), it shows the image with new edits, telling me that it has looked at the new, referenced file. But the thumbnail does not update. I have looked for a "recreate preview" command, but have found none.
Any thoughts on how to get iPhoto to build/update the preview image?
    Thanks!
    Michael

    Hello TD,
    Thanks for your reply!
I understand about LR as an external editor. . .
What I have found is that if, in iPhoto, I edit a photo that has been changed it will update the preview. It is not enough to just open the iPhoto editor, an actual change must be made. Once made, the preview is updated to reflect the new file. So, for example: edit a referenced photo in external editor; view photo in iPhoto; see that iPhoto correctly reads the new file, but does not update the preview; open image in iPhoto editor; rotate image; exit iPhoto editor; see that iPhoto preview is correctly updated; unrotate photo; see that correct preview is maintained.
What I would like, but gather does not exist, is a way to ask iPhoto to create new previews for a group of images rather than having to open and edit (and unedit) each one. . .
    Thanks!
    Michael

  • Thumbnail Issues

I just d/lded the recent version upgrade, and now my thumbnails have disappeared, and my ability to select them under theview tab is greyed, so I cannot select same. Any suggestions?

Thanks. I tried that, and it initially appeared to work, but as soon as I switched to a subfolder of photos I had d/lded after I upgraded the iphoto, the thumbnails disappeared and the ability to select them went grey again. I tried re-doing the fix, and the same thing happened. In both cases, the thumbnails disappeared completely.

  • No iPhoto Video Thumbnails in iMovie

    Hi Guys,
I have a problem with generated iPhoto-Video-Thumbnails in iMovie .
It seems that iMovie is not able to create Video-Thumbnails out of iPhoto-Videos, if iPhoto-contents (pictures and videos) are stored outside of iPhoto Library.
If I allow iPhoto to copy pictures and videos into iPhoto library (during import), iMovie is able to generate those Video-Thumbnails from iPhoto-Videos.
Is there any kind of workaround to solve this problem.
I'm not willing to copy my iPhoto-stuff into iPhoto library due to the new iPhoto folder-structure, which is used since iPhoto 11.
Many thanks in advance of some helping hands...

Did you ever find a solution to this problem?

  • Generating iPhoto video thumbnails?

When imovie "generates iPhoto video thumbnails" is it impporting the movie files from iphoto thus doubling up the files, or just creating a link to the original file (like an alias.)
    thanks. John

It is creating new files but they are much smaller (hence thumbnails), so that iMovie can scrub through the clips quickly. It would not work if it had to scrub through the full size movie files. Even the DV movies you import directly into iMovie from a camera create thumbnail versions to help with the speed of scrubbing.

  • IPhoto thumbnail issue

I have a new Mac with Snow Leopard and iPhoto 09. I transferred stuff from an older Mac and my iPhoto library transferred nicely. Now I notice that when I double-click on a thumbnail image from a recent event I get a blurry black screen with a white circle and an "i". I've tried all the rebuilding choices using option-command while starting up and they are still not showing an enlarged version. I tried deleted the iPhoto preference file. Nothing. I have almost everything backed up but a few recent pictures. I'd like to get those pictures back. What can I do? If they are corrupted and lost to me, how can I ever trust iPhoto with my pictures again? Thanks in advance for the help.

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto Video and Thumbnail Issue

I restored all my data to my new hard drive from my Time Capsule.  After iPhoto finished all it's rebuilding and updating thumbnails, the thumbnails for all my videos (imported from my iPhone) in iPhoto are still missing.  The videos are all still there and in the right "events", but without the thumbnail photo, I have no idea which videos are which.  How do I get the thumbnail photos back for my videos?

    It just fixed itself!!!

  • IPhoto 11: Thumbnails show as normal, but photos are blank

Hello everyone.   I have a problem that I bet is common, but I'm not seeing it here in the discussions, maybe from people describing it as different things.
I just opened iPhoto 11 to access some photos, went through the thumbnails, found the ones I wanted, clicked...and I get a black screen.   Same for ALL the photos I've tried.
I know there have been many people with problems after upgrading to iPhoto 11, but I have had it for some time without issues, in fact the most recent photos I'd imported into the program were a month ago, when it seemed to be working normally.
I made a backup copy of my iPhoto Library, and used two of the 'rebuild' functions, 'Repair the iPhoto Library Database' and 'Examine and Repair the iPhoto Library file permissions' but the problem is still there.
Will likely go ahead with the rest of the 'Rebuild' functions but would welcome some knowledgeable advice.
    Thanks in advance!

Yesterday I d/led the demo version of iPhoto Library Manager, opened it, and it immediately 'found' the Library and everything displayed correctly--within iPLM.
Curious if that would carry over to iPhoto itself, I then opened it and...it did.   Then I closed iPLM and iPhoto, reopened the latter by itself, and again it was fine.   24 hrs later it all seems back to normal.
I have no idea how iPhoto Library Manager works but it solved this problem.

  • Iphoto 11 rotation issue.. Please Help..

I'm having an issue with iphoto with the way it's displaying images. For some reason when I view the contents of an event it will rotate and stretch images randomly even when the thumbnails are displayed the correct way round. There seems to be no reason why this is happening,
I have been through all the rebuild options in iphoto and have rebuilt the library using iphoto library manager but it's still happening.
Sometimes when I launch iphoto it isn't an issue straight away, I have to look through several events before it starts rotating images...

One the chance that it might be a preference file in your account that is the culprit first start with this:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion and Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE 1: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If that doesn't do the job it could be a preference file other than iPhoto's.  Here's how to test that:
    Trouble Shooting Preferences
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
    1 - close all applications.
2 - open your Home/Library folder and Option-drag (copy) the Preferences folder to the Desktop.
3 - select the contents of your Home/Library/Preferences folder and drag them into the Trash bin in the Dock.  You will be asked to provide your Admin password.
    4 - reboot.
5 - run the application again and determine if the problems is fixed
6 - If the problem is fixed:
    A - open the working Home/Library/Preferences folder.
B - Open the Preferences  folder on the Desktop, select all of the contents and drag them into the working Home/Library/Preferences folder.
C - When the Copy window pops up check the "Apply to All" check box and then click on the Don't Replace or Skip button.
    D - reboot.
7 - If the problem is NOT fixed, drag the contents of the Preference folder on the Desktop into the Home/Library/Preference folder and replace the entire contents that were created by clicking on Replace.
    8 - reboot.

  • In iPhoto, the thumbnails do not match the real photo, they repeat often the same 15 photos over and over

My iPhoto 9.3.2 (670..63) in Mountain Lion is repeating a grouping of thummnails whose photos when you click do not match.  I have called Apple Care and have reinstalled a new iPhoto library and still have the problem.  We did al this after the update but not the upgracde to MOuntain Lion. This issue is so annoying since instead of easily looking thorugh the thumbnaisl I have to click on each thumnail to see what is under them.  Please help.

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to rebuild the thumbnails. It can take 3 or 4 goes for this to work

  • IPhoto 11 Migration Issue: Unique Circumstance (Boot Drive Crash)

    Hello good folk,
I have a migration issue with iPhoto 11 due to a boot drive crash.
The issue: I have imported my library database file and all of my 25,000 photos into a clean install of iPhoto 11. All of the events are imported, but all of the photos appear in the very first event. All of the other events are populated with the correct number of photos, but none of the actual photos have been linked.
I know all about holding down option-click and option-command-click to rebuild libraries, directories, etc., as I have read about in multiple posts. But many tries haven't gotten me to success.
Any suggestions? What am I doing wrong?
Here are the specifics of the chain of events, in case it helps [sorry for all the details, but it might help]:
    1. Was running iPhoto 09 in 10.5.8, my boot drive bit the dust.
    2. I was able to save most of my data from the drive. Due to corrupt files, I was forced to back up unconventionally: instead of saving the entire library, which I could not do, I unpacked the iPhoto library and, from the Originals folder, I copied over entire year folders (2002, 2003, etc.) onto a non-boot drive. This worked.
    3. I then installed the new boot HD and installed 10.6.X.
    4. I installed fresh copy of iPhoto 11 and updated the software.
    5. In iPhoto 11, I threw away the database and replaced with the recovered database from the old boot drive.
    6. I copied all of the year photo folders (from the "Originals" folder on the manual backup disk) wholesale into the "Masters" folder of the new iPhoto 11 install.
    7. [I could not use Migration Assistant to do this because Migration Assistant, for some reason, will not migrate from a non-boot drive that's installed internally on my Mac Pro.]
    8. I option-command-clicked open iPhoto and selected:
    -- Repair iPhoto Library Database
    -- Rebuild small thumbnails
    -- Rebuild all thumbnails
    -- Examine/repair permissions.
    9. I did this twice. The first time, the events from the database installed correctly, but the photos did not show up. The second time, after a very long time rebuilding the thumbnails, all 25,000 photos showed up, but in the very first event. All of the other events remain blank.
    10. I then did an option-click, and chose to open the main library. I did that, but nothing changed.
    11. Perhaps interestingly, when I option-click, it says that my manual backup from my internal drive -- where I did my emergency backup -- remains as the "default." The main iPhoto library is not the default.
    12. That's where I am now. I really don't want to have to install manually without the data, when all of the events imported fine, and all of the photos are there, but in the wrong event.
Sorry for the long-windedness. Any suggestions are much appreciated!
    John

I have imported my library database file and all of my 25,000 photos into a clean install of iPhoto 11. All of the events are imported, but all of the photos appear in the very first event. All of the other events are populated with the correct number of photos, but none of the actual photos have been linked.
You can not "Import" an old iPhoto library into another iPhoto library - it is not the way it works - if your old iPhoto library is available you simply place it in the pictures folder and launch iPhoto - no importing involved
you can not piece together an iPhoto library - which is why having a backup up is critical to avoid lost data
If your iPhoto library is not available as a single entity then you will have to start over and create a new library and import the photos into it losing all edits, metadata changes, etc
And if the future remember to always backup soon and often -it is the only way to avoid data loss due to failures - hardware, software and/or human

  • How come my iPhoto faces thumbnails are rotated 90º?

    Hey guys,
I just recently rebuilt my iPhoto library. Now, my photos that were scanned in by hand have a problem with the rotation.
First off, I can understand that they're not rotated at the right angle.
However, I can't understand what's going on with the next problem.
Faces are being detected in the wrong spot! For example:
Clearly, the two people identified are not in the right spots. (Names blurred for privacy; two people being recognized are the mother and the older son.)
I have to go in, manually rotate the photo to the correct orientation, hit the left or right arrow key (to save it), and then come back to the photo before I am able to see that the faces are identified in the correct position.
However, yet another problem crops up. After doing all the aforementioned things, to get Faces to recognize the faces properly, when I exit the editing or info view, the faces which had the rotation issues are now rotated.
I don't know how to fix this one, though. Does anybody have any ideas? Thanks in advance!

regarding why would i want it organised? because thats how im used to doing things.. and regarding iphoto:
i have a folder called ictures" in it i have 4 folders: "pictures in the US" , "pictures around the world", "pictures with friends"  and "pictures with family".
if you go to "pictures around the world", you will be exposed to a bunch of folders: "europe", "africa", south america"... and more. click on "south america" and you will get "peru", "bolivia"...
...click on "peru" and it will give you more subfolders: "lima", "cusco"...
click on one of them-u will get a bunch of photos in that specific destination.
why do i need this order? cause i dont want my photos from africa, to get mixed up with photos from the middle ease, or europe..
Wow, that is a LOT of work to get them organized into individual folders like that.
When you organize them in folders, what if a photo fits in more than 1 category such as Bolivia and 2009 and family?
You have to duplicate it and put it into three different folders.
And you can't really see the photos except as a thumbnail in the Finder.
This is what the metadata is good for. Using keywords, events, albums and smart albums and such to very easily organize everything.
iPhoto and iTunes are both managers of the data so you don't have a zillion different folders and wonder where you put that photo of your dog.
Using iPhoto, to see all photos from Aftrica, just type Africa.
Want only Lima, just type Lima.
How about family pix in Luxembourg in 2008? Just type the keywords.
Looking through folders, you'd be digging for a while and everything would be in different folders and then what?
But if that works for you, okay.
I'd rather enjoy looking at and doing something (printing/emailing) with the photos than spend time organizing/figuring out where everything is.
    Good luck!

  • Aperture & iPhoto referenced library issues

    Hi,
For the last couple of days I've been busy trying to get my Aperture library to work properly. I recently started using a referenced library because of lack of space on my internal ssd. I've generated previews on all of my 40000 photos. I can see all of my Projects, thumbnails, metadata etc. when my external drive is disconnected. However, there are two major issues:
    1) Most of the video thumbnails are broken, both in Aperture and iPhoto. By double clicking a thumbnail of a video (.mov, .avi etc.) it sometimes starts playing, sometimes it doesn't, totally inconsistent. I can export the video and it works just fine.
    2) While using iPhoto with the external drive disconnected, all Events are there, the thumbnails are there, everything looks ok, but I can only view some of the previews/photos after double clicking the thumbnails. A dialogue opens up saying "The volume for [imagefilename] cannot be found. Insert the disk or connect to the server volume..", but I can actually see the full size preview behind this dialogue. By clicking "Cancel" the photo dissapears and is replaced by a black screen with a grey exclamation mark. This does not occur while using Aperture, I can see all of my previews in full glory when the external drive is disconnected. However, with the external drive connected everything works in iPhoto (except above mentioned issue with videos).
Please boys and girls, help me out with this!
    System information
    OS: Maverick 10.9.1
    Aperture: 3.5.1
    iPhoto: 9.5.1
    Thanks!
    //Michel

I don;t use iPhoto much so I'm no expert but looking at other posts asking a similar question sems to indicate iPhoto is not capable of doing this.
See Can iPhoto view pictures on a disconnected external drive in a unified photo library? for one example.
Again if Aperture is working correctly on the referenced images on the disconnect drive and iPhoto is not you will need to ask the iPhoto folks.
