IPhoto 6 with 2 macs, an airport extreme and a extenal harddrive

Hi
Can you help a new mac user?
I recently converted from PC because I heard so many great things about the mac but have struggled with a few things.
I have two macs - a mac book and a mini - and an airport extreme with a harddrive attached. I have IPhoto 6 and a shedload of photos. What I want to do is the following:
1. Back up my photo collection on the external harddrive. I presume the easiest way to do this is just to export from IPhoto. Is this the best way?
2. Modify the pictures on one or other of the macs and then update the other one with the changes. Not sure how to do this.
Also, I have been playing around with these things for the last couple of weeks and noticed if I import photos from the external drive they lose their original date settings and get the date settings from the date I put them on the external drive. This has driven me mad and if I ever had to import my backed up library from my harddrive would send me completely crazy. Any suggestions.
Thanks in advance...

Welcome to the Apple Discussions and in from the darkside.
Are you wanting to share a library between the two Macs or have each Mac have it's own library and then keep them the same as time goes on.
If it's the first option, you're best bet would be to put your iPhoto Library folder on the external HD (with ownership turned off as shown here) and then have each Mac access the library on the external HD.
Then you can periodically copy the iPhoto library folder to one of the Macs as a backup, the one with the most free HD space. To do it frequently you can use a backup application what will only copy those new or changed files from the library folder on the external to the backup copy on the designated Mac. Much faster that way.
If it's the later, then it's going to be a little more difficult, at least the updating the second Mac. If both Macs will be adding new photos to the library it will take using iPhoto Library Manager to move the new photos (in rolls or albums) from one library to the other like this while keeping the keywords intact.
If you're only adding new photos to one library and you want to update the library on the second mac occasionally you can use the backup application to backup from Library A to Library B. Then keep a backup of the primary library (A) on the external HD and back it up with the backup application frequently also. I use Synk for that.
I think the first option would be the best as each Mac can add to the same library. One restriction to that would be that only one Mac can access the library at a time.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

Apple TV mirroring issues even with Mac mini, airport extreme bought at the end of last year, and an iPad 2

I have the same issue with ATV3 and iPhone 4S. Everything works properly, no buffering issues when watching netflix, vimeo, youtube BUT when I try mirroring even a small 15sec iPhone movie it stutters and buffers and results to a choppy playback..same with larger mp4 files such as 1-1.5GB, buffers forever and never plays, I just re-encoded the same movie to 700MB and plays perfectly..
Why Apple, why?..so close..I can accept the bigger movie files issue, but not being able to playback properly an iPhone movie is funny..I recorded a movie with lower bitrate through Filmic Pro (Economy mode, up to 16Mbps)
    and plays properly.
Is there an upcoming software update going to solve the problem or is it hardware related and therefore not fixable.
Please don't reply with a network related answer, by 2012 we know how to set up our networks and everything else runs flawlessly.
I'll apreciate a fast answer, we love Apple, but if it can't play an iphone movie (or a high quality movie from iTunes) it's just not up to my standards.
    Thanks again.

  • How does one sync the new time capsule with the old airport extreme and airport express in order to extend range?

How does one sync the new time capsule with the old airport extreme and airport express in order to extend range?

    Thanks for the additional information.
Unfortunately, the AirPort Utility application in the Lion and Mountain Lion operating systems, which is used to configure the new Time Capsule does not support the older versions of the products that you have.
Even if it did, there are no settings on the older AirPorts to "Extend a wireless network", so they are not compatible with the new Time Capsule if you intend to extend the network only using wireless connections.
If you have the ability to connect each AirPort to the Time Capsule using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection, it might be possible to use a complicated workaround to install an older version of AirPort Utility to configure the older AirPorts to work with the new Time Capsule.
If you have another Mac there that is using the Leopard or Snow Leoapard operating system, things would likely be simpler. I have not done this type of procedure to mix a new Time Capsule with older AirPorts, so I would not be able to say whether this would work or not.

  • Port Forwarding for Two Macs, one Airport Extreme and one Dynalink RTA1320

I had previously set up PortForwarding for some of my Applications on my iMac with an Ethernet connected Dynalink RTA1320 Modem by assigning myself a Static IP in the iMac`s Network Preferences.
All had been good, green smilies on Azureus when D/Ling bitorrents, Skype, WoW and Limewire all running fine.
I`ve now just recently purchased the latest Airport Extreme and 17" MacBook Pro.
Setting up a Wireless Network for the two Macs to access the internet was a breeze and both computers run fine online simultaneously.
I manually set the Ports on the MBP Applications: Skype, Azureus and Limewire to match the Ports I`d previously PortForwarded the RTA1320 to.
However, on the new MBP, Skype, Azureus and Limewire don`t seem to run too well.
I get yellow smilies on Azureus and a "Port Appears Closed" message on the NAT Test and my Skype Contacts are leaving me messages saying I always appear "off-line".
The iMac Apps still work flawlessly.
I`m guessing the problem is something to do with two Macs on a Wireless Network with one Static IP Address or what am I doing wrong?

I was given an iMac desktop computer, operating system OSX 10.4.8 (2011). The network admin utility is not compatiable with my airport extreme router, and I am unable to connect to the internet to update the software.   Can someone please tell me how to update the software or download a newer version on the network admin, or how to connect this computer to the internet?

  • Problems syncing with .mac via airport extreme

When I try to sync my calendar via .mac I get an error can't connect to .mac sync server. There does not appear to be a problem with idisk syncing.
When I use a hardwire connection I do not have a problem. I have no problem browsing or streaming itunes music using the express nor printing. It has been suggested that the signal being sent is not of sufficient "quality" for the .mac to accept the link.
Is this likely? Is it possible to alter the configuration of the airport to result in a stronger more stable link? I would be willing to sacrifice some speed for this reliability.

Therefore I was wondering if it's possible to connect my external drive to an extrem airport and to listen at the music from my mac via i-tunes to my stereo ?
Yes. You just need to point iTunes on your Mac to the new location for its Media Folder on the AirPort Disk attached to the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS).

  • My Atv2 is  very slow movies and shows take forever to load it plays for a few minutes then pauses again. I thought if was a problem with my wireless router but I replaced it with a new airport extreme and the problem persists. Air play is just as slow.

My Atv2 is very slow with both AirPlay and rented and purchased content I spoke to apple rep and tried the things he suggested but the problem persists. Now it requires more lead time then the lenght of material being viewed. I haves broadband internet connection and airport extreme router so I don't think this should be a problem. Lately every time the unit goes to the screen saver an error message come up saying there was an error while loading content please try again later and you have to all over again. It is extremely frustrating. Any suggestions? What speed of transfer should I expect using AirPlay ?

I'm having the same issue.  Ay fixes?  Bought ATV today, music streams but videos don't and mirroring doesn't work either.  Start mirror and severe lag then just drops.  Been trying for couple hours. About ready to return it.

  • Can I add a WiFi printer through WPS with the new AirPort Extreme and AirPort Utility 6.3?

It says here that AirPort Utility 6.2 supports WPS-capable WiFi printers, but on the new AirPort Extreme techs pecs Apple insists that the way printing is shared is by connecting the printer to the AirPort Extreme with a USB cable, which really defeats the whole purpose of WiFi printing doesn't it?
Does the new Airport Extreme support WPS-capable printing? Does AirPort Utility 6.3 support it?

Does AirPort Utility 6.3 support it?

  • Airport Extreme and a Time Capsule - config recommendations?

    Hi!
So I find myself (in a fortunate position?!) with a new Airport Extreme and a Time Capsule.
I have very few requirements - I would like to be able to connect to the Internet wirelessly, and I'd like to be able to backup a couple of Macs using Time Machine (also wirelessly).  I realise that the TC can provide me with that functionality nice and easily, but since I have an AE and a TC, I figure it would be good to make use of both, and so I wanted to ask if anyone had any recommendations for a useful configuration?
I think there are 2 basic options I could make use of (have I missed any?!):
    1) Use AE as base station and connect the TC to it as an external HD
    2) Use AE as base station and also make TC available for back up wirelessly
Does anyone have any thoughts on the above?  If you'd recommend 2), what would be your suggested approach as I think I'm right in saying that 2) could be done in several ways? Roaming? WDS? Just setup TC as a stand-alone wireless box with no internet connection? (does this latter approach mean I could connect to the internet and backup at the same time - I'm guessing not?)
If 1) is the way to go, is it just a case of putting an ethernet cable between the 2 boxes?
Any thoughts would be hugely appreciated!
    Many thanks

I would use the Time Capsule as the wireless base station connected to the modem.  Then I'd use the Airport Extreme to extend the network or to create a roaming network (ethernet cable betwee the units), whichever worked best in the premises.  Naturally, Time Capsule would be used for backups of all machines equipped with Time Machine.  Have never hooked up any Apple equipment but from my understanding of it, this is what I'd try.

Once you have the drive connected to your Mac, click System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    Click Time Machine
    Click Options
Be default, the hard drive will be Excluded from backups. Click the drive to highlight it, then click the "-" (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the drive from Excluded items.
The drive will be backed up on the next Time Machine pass
Everything above assumes that the hard drive has been formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as Time Machine will only backup drives in that format.

Not always but often it has trouble seeing the Airport and making a connection. I have an older Airport Express, would it help to install it? would it work best if it was installed in the same room? should it be installed half way in between? Get another Extreme? The Mac Book Pro on the middle floor can see 11 networks in the neighbourhood if that might be causing a problem or would if I installed the Express. Thank for your consideration.

Thanks for your time ... I appologize for the font and colour, I compossed the question in pages and failed to notice the font colour as grey ... there are a variety of computers of various ages so I think it is using a setting that allows both 5G and 2.4 ... the connection to the Airport is thru a cable modem and cable does run throuhout the house ... maybe those hard wires would be a place to look at ... do you think that putting the 'Express' on the second floor might help ... thanks again ...

  • Just bought a brand new Airport Extreme and having trouble with it being recognized. I have a Mac version 10.5.8. Is my computer compatible?  I have the Airport Express now and it works fine.

Just bought a brand new airport extreme and having trouble with it being recognized.  My mac is version 10.5.8.  What should I do?

The new AirPort Extreme needs the 6.x version of AirPort Utility, which comes packed in with Lion 10.7.5 or Mountain Lion 10.8.x......or......you can also configure the device using an iPhone or iPad running a recent iOS.
    From Apple's Specifications:
    Setup and Administration
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 5 or later and AirPort Utility 1.3
Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.5 or later and AirPort Utility 6.3
    A few options.....
Borrow another Mac running Lion or Mountain Lion for 10-15 minutes and set it up. The Mac running 10.5.8 will be able to connect to the wireless....but it will not be able to make any changes to the configuration of the Extreme.
Update to Lion or Mountain Lion.....but check first to make sure that your Mac will support the operating system first.
Use....or borrow an iPhone or iPad to set up the Extreme

i dont know what else to try, i have followed every step on the manual, and nothing works..
    someone help me

Could you open System Profiler on the iMac and the MBPro and select the Printers entry. Then in the top right pane you can select the printers entry and the bottom right pane will show information about your setup. Can you copy this information from both Mac's and paste back here.

  • Using a current Time Capsule with Airport Extreme and Airport Express Older generation

I am looking to achieve a fast local network that allows streaming of music and video. I have bought a Time Capsule to replace the Telstra router (Thomson Router) by linking it using ethernet cable and then set up a network that also uses and older airport extreme and express router (g standard).
It would appear that the local network speed is slow - how can I assess the connection speed in the local network - both wireless and for ethernet?  I believe that there is a speed indication on my two older macs running OSX 10.5 but not in OSX 10.6.  Is there a tool to assess the local network speed?
The current set up works less well than previously only using the Thomson router, so the initial results are very disappointing.  Not even streaming music seems to work and it stutters to halt.
I had expected that the dual band functionality would allow fast local connections where needed.  What do I need to change?
    Thanks you.
    Tom

    Hi Bob,
The two old airports (extreme and express) are connected wirelessly to the time capsule base station with the following use:
    - round extreme base station supports a printer only - remote WDS indicated in set up
    - airport express supports remote speakers - set up does not indicate WDS status
I noticed in another note to provide a second network name to 5GHz network and connect the modern computers, ipad (seems to be able to connect) and apple tv to the 5 GHz network, leaving the other on the separate network.  Also the two computers, apart from the laptops are connected via ethernet to use the GB ethernet, but I am not sure whether that speed is achieved or whether a firewire connection between the two would be better. use examples are:
    1. Wirelessly I am trying to use three speakers - computer, apple tv and express - to have to listen to the same music in three rooms.
    2. Over ethernet, I am using the the powermac as a file server to mac mini, but would like to be bale to access photo libraries (both Iphoto and Aperture) ideally over the network.  It works well with starting the powermac in target disk mode but seems slow over what should be a very fast ethernet network.
The connection with the service providers router and time capsule is bridged - seems to be the only way of providing internet access - however, it also seems to allow for shared devices to be visible across the two time capsule and the Thomson network.
Obviously, this will need some more experimentation but any input would be appreciated.
    Thank you and regards,
    Tom
PS> Timezone wise I am currently living in Australia - must change my profile one day.....

  • I'm having a hard time setting up my external hard from with my AirPort Extreme and Time Machine Backups.

I have been using a Mac Mini with an external hard and Time Machine.  I bought an Airport Extreme and have had problem setting up the hard drive using the USB port on the Airport Extreme.  I also just recently bought a Mac Book Air and hope to have both computers back up to the external hard drive using Time Machine and Airport Extreme.  I have been using the optical drive from the Mac mini to load programs into the Mac Book Air.  I think I'm just getting confused in Finder.  I am just not seeing the hard drive.  I ended up plugging the hard drive back into the Mac Mini and that is work fine again.  How do I setting the external hard drive up to the AirPort Extreme and use for both computers?  Or at least to start with the Mac mini.

It's critical to understand that Time Machine (TM) stores backups differently between local and network drives. That would mean the TM backup on your locally attached USB hard drive will not be directly useable when it is connected to the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS). There is a way to copy a local version to a network version, but it is not fool-proof. When you do connect this drive and point TM to it, TM will start a brand new backup, leaving your existing backup as is.
If your current backup is critical to you, you may want to consider getting a second USB drive to attach to the Extreme and use your existing one as a backup ... or use TM's multi-backup process to backup to more than one destination drive alternatively.
So, at this point, you may want to make a decision on how you want to go forward to help provide a solution for you.
To directly answer your question, when you go to select a destination for a Time Machine backup, the drive(s) that show up under "Backup Disks" are those that TM already recognizes and has backed up to. Those listed under "Available Disks" are drives (either local or on the network) that TM can back up to.
