Iphoto 7.1.3 won't launch

a few days ago I reinstalled the start up disks since I was missing TextEdit. I now have TextEdit, but my iPhoto wont open. I can see the photos in Automator, but can't run any commands with iPhoto and get a Applescript error 5.
Also I cant access the photo library from finder.
I'm open to suggestions

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Did iPhoto come with your Mac or did you buy iLife 08? Also did you do an archive and install or a full erase and install?
Do you have the iPHoto app in the Applications folder? What happens when you double click on it? What commands are you trying to run in iPhoto what would require Applescript?
As a first try at a fix delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder and launch iPhoto. See if it will run.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

Any ideas on what the problem is? And of course how to fix it?
I'm afraid that if I delete an reinstall iPhoto, al my pictures will be lost?

Do you have Photo Stream enabled?

Try this solution for user photosb189:
From Finder, hold down the option key on your keyboard and click on the Go menu at the top of the screen
Select Library from the drop down menu
Then navigate to Application Support > iLifeAssetManagement > assets
Right click on the 'sub' folder and choose Compress
Drag the resulting zip file to your Desktop (as a backup)
Go to your System Preferences and choose iCloud
Turn OFF the iCloud Photos option
Go back to Library > Application Support and DELETE the iLifeAssetManagement folder
Now, in System Preferences, turn the iCloud Photos option ON
iPhoto should now be able to launch. Give it enough time to re-download your Photo Stream content. Unzip the sub folder on your desktop and drag that into iPhoto if you are missing any of your My Photo Stream photos (more than 30 days old).

Iphoto 8.1.2 won't launch

I'm running 10.5.8 on a ppc g4 powerbook. iPhoto won't launch. I ran the update from 8.1.1 to 8.1.2 and it still won't launch.

You need to reinstall iPhoto as it's missing bits of itself.
To re-install iPhoto
1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5: Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows: In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
/var/db/receipts/
2c: on 10.7 they're at
/private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.

IPhoto 9.1.2 Won't Launch - Disaster!

I have iPhoto 9.1.2 working on OSX 10.6.7.
I believe all was fine until last time I loaded my SIM card, and iPhoto didn't auto launch.
I checked the preferences, and it did show that it would auto launch when camera was connected (although I had always used my SIM card instead of connecting camera via cord).
I can't remember if/when I upgraded anything of late.
Only when I hold down the iPhoto icon in the toolbar (yes, I used to be a PC user), iPhoto will sort of open, but it won't let me do anything - if I go to click on a photo, it puts the program back down into the toolbar.
I did see that the photos from my SIM card had loaded into the program, but couldn't do anything with iPhoto - I was able to access the photos via Photos in finder, but I couldn't edit them.
I also tried to launch it from the Applications folder, but it wouldn't work.
Desperate for your help, but please explain like you are talking to a 5th grader as I rely on my husband to follow instructions and he is PC through and through!

Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If you're able to create and run a new library then your current library is the culprit and is damaged.
If that's the case make a temporary, duplicate copy of your library and apply the three fixes in order as necessary.
Fix #1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file,, Cache.dbt, that is located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
If that doesn't help try the following: make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
Fix #3
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

IPhoto 6.0.1 won't launch

I installed the 6.0.1 update through the Updater, but iPhoto then refused to launch. iPhoto 6 opened fine, but 6.0.1 refuses to open. On the first attempt to launch, the icon bounced for a bout 15 and then stopped. On further tries, the icon bounced once and then stopped.
I trashed the update and copied iPhoto 6 back to the hard drive from a backup, and it opens fine now. What's causing the update not to launch?

IPhoto 4.0.3 - won't launch properly...

When I double click to launch iPhoto (Version 4.0.3) - it opens the main window - then 'sits on the 'Loading Photos' logo with the spinning disc & doesn't load in our photos.
We have tried restart & full shutdown & also launching the application from different 'origins' (the dock, Application Folder in HD etc) - but it does the same every time
Any ideas welcomed...we're panicking!!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. This may fix it.
Determining if the SWOD (spinning wheel of death) at launch is caused by a corrupt album.
1 - move the Albums folder and the AlbumData.xml file to the Desktop
2 - launch iPhoto. If it launches OK then it's a bad album.
3 - to determine which one(s) is the bad apple (pun intended) move, one at a time, each album folder and it's associated data file back into the new Albums folder that was created inside the iPhoto Library folder.
4 - Launch iPhoto. If the launch is OK, that one was good and try the same with the next one.
5 - If the launch gives you the SWOD, remove that last album folder and it's data file.
6 - repeat with each album folder and data file until you've checked them all.

Help: iPhoto and other iApps Won't Launch!

All of a sudden, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, iChat quit unexpectedly before launching. I only use iPhoto, but can't reinstall it from the the installation disk in a custom reinstall (it is grayed out and has 0 content) and I can't rebuild it iPhoto Rebuild. Plugging in a card reader with photos doesn't launch it. I am at my wits end. Adobe photoshop elements is sending crash reports too.
I just installed DropBox. Could this have caused the problem?
-I have Time Machine. Can you rebuild apps from there? Can I go back to an earlier time when the apps were working and just re-upload whatever new files were on added?
-If I upgrade to Snow Leopard, will this solve the problem? That is just an OS - do I need to also buy software upgrades?

Move the cursor of the app in the Dock (lower bar on screen) and click on the app and there should be a Quit or Force Quit selection. Also, you can open Activity Monitor which is in Finder>Applications>Utilities and select the app and then click on Force Quit

IPhoto 9.4.3 won't launch. iPhoto Library Upgrader doesn't help.

I am going around in circles trying to get iPhoto 9.4.3 to launch. When I try to launch it I get the following message;
To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared.
To prepare the library, use the iPhoto Library Upgrader available from Apple.

After downloading the iPhoto Library Upgrader tool and launching it from the Utilities folder it simply hangs (greys out) and I have to force quit as it says that iPhoto is not reponding.
When the updater starts it says it is preparing photos from iPhoto 7. I never/rarely use iPhoto but I need it to select images for another application (iWeb).
Any idea how to get iPhoto to work? Can I just remove all the files in the iPhoto Library?

Thanks for your suggestions but it appears you haven't read my original post where I state that I have already downloaded and tried the iPhoto Library Manager and iphoto just hangs so that I need to force quit the application.

IPhoto 7.2.1 won't launch!

iPhoto 9.2.1. iMac 10.7.5.
Short Version: Can't load my iPhoto from my Seagate External Harddrive. Tried rebuilding library, resetting permissions, etc. Occasionally will launch but mostly does not. Even when it launches, it is not fully functioning (for example, can't load new pictures from SD card). Library is large: 565 GB. Advice?

PPS: My kids use iMovie HD, which works with iPhoto 7.2.1. That's why I did not increase to iPhoto 7.4.3

what format is the external drive and how is it connected to higher Mac?
To get the format select the drive in the finder and get info (right click - get info) - the drive format is part of the info window - for the iPhoto library to work on it it must be Mac OS extended (journaled)
The connection is the cable that connects it to your Mac

Iphoto 7.1.5 won't launch

This problem came out of nowhere, and has persisted through at least one OS update. And Now I moved my hard drive and accounts to a new(er) computer, and it still persists.
So I'm assuming the problem lies in my iphoto database. The pictures all seem to be there.
Whenever I try to launch the program, the icon appears briefly in the dock and then vanishes.
Thoughts?

Start with the troubleshooting basics:
1. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
2. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

IPhoto 8.1.2 won't launch (crashes) after restore

My computer crashes so I took it into the mac store to get fixed.
The problem was still there after they did a reinstall, then updated from my backup. So they reinstalled OS X 10.6.8, and only my contents from the backup.
Everything seems to work okay (was a little slow at the start, but seems to have come right) EXCEPT iPhoto.
When I try to open this, it just crashes.

IPhoto won't launch for a user

iPhoto (9.4.3) won't launch for one of the users on our iMac running OS X Lion 10.7.5
We have two user accounts both with Admin previleges. For one of the accounts, iPhoto works fine. For the other account, it just won't launch iphoto and we don't get any error message when launching it from the dock. However, when launching iPhoto from a terminal window (/Applications/iPhoto.app/Content/MacOS/iphoto) the error is:
illegal instruction: 4.
I've trashed the iphoto preference file...no joy. I've also tried launching iPhoto while holding down the option key...also no joy.
Any suggestions?

I have removed everything from my user library and reinstalled InDesign. Now InDesign begins to launch, but then crashes when it gets to the 'Starting up Service Registry' line on the application screen. Any thoughts? My call to apple has yielded a 'we've done everything we can do' response.

IPhoto 11 won't launch and crashes every time I try to rebuild the library. Urgh.

iPhoto 11 won't launch- it's another case of an infinite skinny wheel. I've tried rebuilding the library numerous times, each time it takes about a day and each time it crashes near the end. This is just ridiculous. Any tips folks?
APPLE if you can hear me... shouldn't you be testing this stuff prior to release? I know you do but I mean, like REALLY testing it? This is my second iPhoto upgrade disaster. The last time I lost my entire library, had to spend £80 on recovery software that recovered not only most of my photos, but every image cached on my machine. So then I had the fun of sorting through literally thousands of images...
And I only got the upgrade becasue my iPhone is refusing to sync, freezing on the iPhoto bit. Gah.

Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:

IPhoto won't launch! And yes I've updated everything.

iPhoto won't work all of a sudden this week. When I try to launch it, the rainbow wheel just hangs there forever, and the grey and white background of iPhoto (minus all the photos) hangs there uselessly behind it.
It worked just last week! I tried installing all updates on my Macbook, and it still won't launch.
It stopped working right after I allowed my Apple tv to update itelf actually.
Another thing that happened since I allowed my Apple tv and my Macbook to both install all updates is that my music is no longer available through Apple TV, even though I paid the annual fee to have my music available in the cloud at all times. It just says, "syncing purchased music: your purchased music is curretnly being synced to your Apple TV"...and has said so for a few days now.
I am guessing there is a problem with the updates somehow?
I've tried the suggestion I read about in some other threads about holding down the command and option keys while launching iphoto, but still no luck. Rainbow wheel of death and iPhoto stays on the grey/white blank screen.
Any advice is appreciated.

Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library database
Be sure to Hold the option and command keys down until the first aid screen comes up
