Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

THIS IS VERY UNFAIR FOR ME. I HAD UPGRADED AND PUT EXTRA MONEY ON THAT.
THE REFUND POLICY IS 30DAYS IN USA BUT 14 DAYS IN HK.
WHAT CAN I DO? MY MAC IS JUST 3 WEEKS OLD.If Hong Kong truly has a 14 day limit on returns, I would recommend that you go into the nearest Apple Store and kindly and politely ask to speak to the Store Manager. Patiently explain your situation to him and ask him if there is any way he can help you out. I have used this approach myself in the past with a related issue and got surprisingly good results from the Manager. (The Managers have extensive freedom to take care of their customers if they truly want to.) Best wishes.

IPhoto Images Showing Up in iLife Media Browser, Desktop/ScreenSaver, Etc.
Like others, I'm having the problem where my iPhoto library/images are not showing up in the iLife Media Browser in other iLife and iWork applications. They are also not showing up in the Desktop & Screen Saver system preferences.
I've read a lot of posts on this problem and have tried the remedies that others have described - to no avail. It seems others have reached a dead end as well.
I even upgraded my entire machine with the purchase of a new iMac this week (to replace a non-Intel G5 running Leopard). I completed the Setup Assistant and all files transferred fine. I thought surely this would solve the issue, but to my surprise it continues on the new machine.
Any ideas?
On a side note, my Faces tags didn't transfer to the new machine. I posted about that issue here:

Not sure if that secondary problem is in any way related to the iLife Media Browser issue.

I have the newest version of the mac book pro and i recently bought iLife 11 because i needed idvd but when i installed iLife my iphoto no longer works and will not let me open. How do i fix this

iTunes in Mac OS X Tiger is outdated. Open > Software Update to install the latest iTunes version for Tiger.
If you need iTunes 10.7 or a newer version, you have to upgrade to Mac OS X Snow Leopard. First, check that your Mac is supported > http://support.apple.com/kb/sp575 If it is, buy Snow Leopard > http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
After buying Snow Leopard, make a backup of your data, insert the DVD and upgrade to Snow Leopard. After upgrading, open > Software Update, and install the latest Snow Leopard version. I was recently given a Mac Mini from a friend. It is an old version (model A1176) and cannot support a current version of iPhoto from the app store. It originally came with iLife, but was apparently wiped when they cleaned the hard drive to give it to me, and they cannot find the CD to reload it. I can no longer find iLife '11 in the app store. Is there anything I can do to be able to store photos from my iPhone onto the computer?

The early and late 2006 can only go to 10.6.8 but the mid 2007 can go to Lion. With Lion you can get iPhone from the Mac App Store by:
App Store: Install the latest compatible version of an app
Otherwise you will have to call Apple and order the iLife DVD or get a DVD from Amazon or other places. -
after updating an older intel macbook to Snow Leopard and ilife 11, Software Update says everything is up to date, but when I try to open iPhoto, it tells me I have to update to the latest version, what can I do?

I am using iPhoto '09 Version 8.1.2 but can not use iCloud with it. I've looked for updates in iPhoto and iLife'11 but no luck. Suggestions very welcome.
No you won't necessarily lose your photos when upgrading but it's very very unwise not to back up first. Backing up is like using a seat belt in a car. You can drive without one for years and have no issues, but if you do have a problem the outcome will be a lot worse. So, too, with back ups. And upgrading is one of those times when the risks of a problem are higher.
Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store -
Suddenly, iPhoto "thinks" it's on my OLD iMacG5 and not supported?
iPhoto won't open and the message says "You can't open the application iPhoto because it is not supported on this type of Mac. This is an iMac 21.5. I THINK, for some reason, iPhoto software isn't operating correctly? I've been using it without incident since we brought it home in April....
If you have the 'pointers' to those songs in the Music part of your iTunes library then iTunes assumes that you still have the tracks somewhere (even if the actual music files are not on your computer). Try deleting the 'pointer' to one of them from your library and see if it then shows in the 'not on this computer' section for re-downloading (assuming that it's still in the store).

iPhoto won't open. Little circle/wheel icon just keeps spinning. Reinstalled from iLife disk, and still no luck. Any suggestions?
What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later:
Option 1

After I loaded ilife 11 and tried to open iphoto, I could not and had a message saying it may be damaged or incomplete. It was working fine yesterday and I've never seen this message. What should I do?
First run Software Update so you have the latest version.
If you still have trouble then hold down CMD and OPT as you click on iPhoto. It will give you options to rebuild your library.

ILife Support 8.1.1 killed iPhoto
Since I installed iLife Support 8.1.1, iPhoto won't launch successfully.
iPhoto will start up for about 3 seconds, then crash out. I rebuilt permissions, no luck. I re-installed iPhoto (7, then 7.1, then 7.1.1), no luck.
iPhoto does work for another (basic) user on this system. But for the account I use, iPhoto won't start. Ideas?

Hi there
We have iMacs at the college running 10.6.6. They came with iLife09 installed and I have also purchased iLife 11. iPhoto won't open and keeps asking for an update. Since we're not on the internet (it's a secure college) I installed iLife 11 from the CD. However, after restarting, I realised that iPhoto was still at v9.0 and iPhoto was still asking for an update from the online updater before it would open.
iLife 11 should install iPhoto11 should it not ?
Can anyone throw some light on this matter ?

Can I install Leopard and iLife 09, but keep iPhoto 05
Hi,
I've tried looking for this answer and have come up empty. Can anyone tell me if I could upgrade my system to Leopard and iLife 09, but keep certain iLife 05 programs like iPhoto 05 and iMovie HD? The new box set is a good deal, but the new versions of those two programs sound worse than the old ones. iPhoto 09 seem to be a space hog with multiple copies of every picture, and iMovie 09 won't even run on my processor speed. I was also worried that iLife 09 programs might be too powerful for my older Mac and hang it up, but iLife 05 would be unsupported on Leopard and also get hung up. Anyone have any thoughts on this subject?

iPhoto '09 keeps no copies - it will, just like iPhoto 5, have either two or three versions of a photo - the original, a thumbnail and if required a modified version
For this you get non destructive editing and always have the ability to revert to the original (the digital negative)
iPhoto '09 does take a lot of CPU resource - I have a 2.1 GHz G5 and it does bog down from time to time (the 8.0.3 upgrade made this much worse - I'm hoping that 8.0.4 or what ever improves the CPU needs)
And the feature set of iPhoto '09 is amazing compared to iPhoto 5 -- unless you have a memory shortage, or a disk shortage I would expect your 1.8 GHz G5 to handle iPhoto '09 acceptably - I've seen no one say it is worse that iPhoto 5 or 6 - an very, very, very few people have gone back to '08 (the report - I suspect that they stick with '09 for the most part since it does so much more)

I try to open iphoto and it comes up with You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto. I have downloaded photo manager and it's telling me to update but it wont update...
iPhoto is Apple's included program to manage your photo's and pictures.
It receives updates over time with Software updates and new machine or iLife purchases.
When iPhoto gets updated or a newer version is used, it may alter iPhoto support files, but newer iPhoto versions usually always compatible with older files which it then updates.
If you used a newer iPhoto on your iPhoto support files, then they got altered to the newer format, older iPhoto versions can't read the older format.
Somewhere along the line you somehow got a older version of iPhoto on your computer, you need to fine the newer version of iPhoto (not this photo manager, sounds like another program)
Or somewhere along the line you used a newer iPhoto version (like on another Mac) and it altered the iPhoto support files on your older version of iPhoto.
So the key here is to find the newest version of iPhoto and use that to access your iPhoto support files.
If you didn't access your iPhoto support files from another Mac, then you should have the newer iPhoto version on your computer.
Once you find it, and get it in the Dock, you should remove the older iPhoto version from your computer to prevent this from happening again.
Lastly, if the newer version of iPhoto is somehow gone off your computer, you should be able to get a copy off the latest OS X install disk or iLife using a free program called Pacifist.
