IPhoto 8.1.2 spontaneously misbehaving

I'm using 8.1.2 with OS10.6.8, haven't changed anything lately. Sudenly, today, iPhoto opens to reveal blank windows. When I pull down "Preferences" and toggle something on/off, the sidebar on the left appears, but no photos show up. iPhoto won't quit, so after Force Quit I restored my iPhoto pictures from Time Machine, rebooted, same result. Tried restoring the iPhoto app from Time Machine, still no go, although this time my Events show up, although they don't allow me to view individual pictures. Any ideas what's going on?
Thanks.
Bruce

Hi Guys!
Apple says "You are not allowed to create or update this content" for below app crash issues:-
First i have updated latest iOS 8 and today i updated 8.1.2 on my iPhone 5, It has been observed that already installed app getting crashed on both the versions while it was working fine with 7.1.2.
1) When i tried to delete my recorded voice memo, it got crashed, each time i have to open the voice memo to delete already recorder voice memo.
2) When i tried to Tap on any post on whatsapp messenger it got crashed and i am not able to see any whatsapp post.
Currently i have observed above issues only as i have not tried to play with this new version of iOS frequently, seems there are lots of major issues.

If I close the computer and open it back up, it sometimes stops for a little while, then will spontaneously start again. Any help would be truly appreciated. Thanks!

See this knowledge base article. Also, you might want to update to 10.6.8 (don't know that that will fix your problem, but it's the latest version of Snow Leopard).

  • IPhoto misbehaving - can't edit

I can't edit an album full of raw images. iPhoto is set to keep my files in my Finder folder structure. If I right click a file to reveal the underlying file it shows me the jpeg in the modified folder in the iPhoto library. But it doesn't seem to be able to import the photo if I Command-D to duplicate it. Has iPhoto just lost track of where the RAW files are? Any way to show it where they are again?
Other albums with RAW are not doing this. Strange, I ordered prints of the troublesome album last week and it let me edit them. Does it lock them after you order prints or something?
I have repaired permissions, rebooted, run the periodic tasks....
Also - when I try to duplicate one of these files iPhoto goes to beach ball and I have to Force Quit it.
One more tidbit: I have show rolls on, and it only shows me the last roll.

Dual 1.8 G5, Macbook Pro 2.16 Ghz Mac OS X (10.4.3) 1.5 GB RAM, iPod, iPod Mini (gone missing)

It seems like it can't find the originals, but it isn't prompting for location or anything.
More info: I have edited these files. So there are jpegs in the library.
Even more info: It has spontaneously corrected itself again. Repair permissions and periodic maintenance and a reboot didn't fix it. But a day later and maybe another reboot and it is fixed. That's what happened before.
Makes me nervous about putting too much effort and energy into organizing photos in this program.

  • IPhoto opens spontaneously; not related to plugging in iPad or iPhone

I've researched the archives and similar questions have been answered but mine's a bit different. iPhoto, which I never use, has started opening everytime I wake the computer and sometimes spontaneously while I'm working on my iMac. Not related to plugging in my iPad or iPhone; it just started happening randomly about a week ago. It's annoying, particularly since I rarely, if ever, use iPhoto.
    Thank you.

  • IPhoto misbehaving in Full Screen mode?

Anyone having trouble with iPhoto dropping out of Full Screen mode? It keeps happening to me. I set up iPhoto in full screen mode and the next thing I know, it's in some sort of middle ground where it occupies the full screen but with a bunch of other apps.
    Solutions?

Before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. With information, s/he may be able to get your issue resolved sooner.

  • IPhoto images reverting spontaneously (edits lost)

I'm not sure if I'm following protocol here. I started a discussion about "iPhoto Library Locked" and in attempting to solve the problem realized I have a different problem. I'm going to go ahead and post under the new heading in the hopes that it will catch the eye of someone who has solved the same problem.
In my library, my photos have started to spontaneouly revert to the original image, wiping out all of my changes. It happens when I double click to enlarge the image; I can watch the crops and edits simply melt away. If I have opened the edit window and am displaying the adjustment pane, it initally shows all the adjustments that were made and then, as it reverls, all of the sliders go back to neutral.
I have option-double-clicked when opening the file to do rebuilds on the permissions, thumbnails and the library DB, and then I've rebuilt the library DB. I tried doing a rebuild using iPhoto Library Manager (IPLM). It appeared to work correctly up to rebuilding thumbnails pretty much at the end of the process; several times during this process iPhoto quit unexpectedly - IPLM simply restarted until at one point IPLM said it was unable to communicate with iPhoto and the whole process just hung up. I had to force quit IPLM. The IPLM rebuilt library was about 27 GB whereas the original is about 30 GB.
My computer (a Mac Book Pro) is running OS 10.8.2 and the iPhoto version is 9.4.2.
Any suggestions as to what to try next?

Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there.
Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A Finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for the iPod Photo Cache. Trash it. Start iPhoto and try sync again.
    Regards
    TD

  • How on earth do i retrieve my treasured photos from a 'corrupt' IPhoto (08)!! Boo Hoo, i had backed up to my IPad but on sync, my IPhoto swallowed those too! boo hoo twice, i have MacBook (2008), ive upgraded, some months ago, to Snow Leopard

Tech; support had me on the phone for hours! (ok, 45 mins) but he couldnt help me, as only a few photos showed up in 'originals' in the package contents, i googled it to death and ended up extracting photos via photo manager, but only managed to get 125 back . i had backed them up on my IPad, but when i foolishly sync'd on my MacBook, IPhoto ate those too . All i can see now in IPhoto, is a few random, upside down photos and a load of empty grey thumbnails that when clicked on show an exclamation mark . Ive done a thing off youtube, this meant re naming the 'originals' setting up a new IPhoto as the default and putting the re named 'originals' and 'modified' in the 'new' package thingy, worked for everyone but not for me (roll of eyes and a tut). I do have 1,000 photos on my ipod though, which i dont have on me at the moment, or id have probably fed that to the macbook for breakfast too!! HELP!!! i didnt do anything (honest) i just went to open IPhoto and it told me it couldnt open it as it was in the trash, RUBBISH (pardon the punn). i dragged it out, but it just had empty thumbnails in albums and events, not fair! not happy! stamping of feet and a beg for help please!!???? Christine (distressed, turning to wine female)

Best solution is to load your backup from before this problem
if you ran iPhoto library manager and it did not get many photos there may be gone - any idea has any photos could have been deleted? Have you tidied up by any change using tidy up or other program other than iPhoto - or using the all images list (never do this BTW)?
when this started was the iPhoto application in the trash or the iPhoto library? How did it get there (it doesn't spontaneously happen - a user must do it)
Knowing how things happened will help resolve this

  • Upon opening a thumbnail to view full size image, it often spontaneously zooms to only display bottom left quarter of image.

When double-clicking on the thumbnail image of an iPhoto album, the full size image will often spontaneously zoom to only display the bottom left quarter of the entire photo when it displays in full size. I can easily work around this by clicking on the right arrow to go to the next full size image (which will display properly) and then click on the left arrow to go back to the initial affected image (which will also then display properly). It does not do this when full-sizing all images from their thumbnails - probably less than 10% of the time; but still often enough to be a pian. I cannot find anything in the preferences which would appear to cause or correct it.
It is a recent problem. I have been using iPhoto extensively for many years without any problems. I cannot recall for sure, but it may have started after my update to version 9.4.2.
Using an iMac with plenty of RAM, latest version of iPhoto 11 and Mountain Lion version 10.8.2.

What is the format of the PS photos and are there any alpha channels in them? You might try to re-edit them with PS, making some insignificant change and then saving.  See if the new edit will display properly.  Are you saving as jpgs with the Baseline format?
I may be preaching to the choir here but this may be of interest:
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

  • Photos in iPhoto cannot be found in the Library Folder on the desktop

I have a perplexing problem with iPhoto 6. A couple of months ago, I started a new Library and renamed it Current iPhoto Library placing it on the Desktop (rather than in the Pictures Folder).
I did this because my laptop became too full and I ran out of hard disk space. The original Library resides on an external hard disk.
I added many new photos to the new Library, inside of new albums.
My problem is that all the new photos seem detached from the Library Folder on the desktop.
They do take up memory, and now my laptop hard disk is full again.
But I cannot free up space because the Library folder does not recognize the existence of the new photos—even though while in iPhoto, with the program is running, I have no trouble accessing all the photos.
I tried DiskWarrior, assuming that there was a Directory malfunction. That did not help.
I tried rebuilding the Library using iPhoto's built-in capability, by starting the program while pressing the Command and Option keys. No help.
How can I make the Library Folder recognize all the photos that iPhoto can see fine within the program?

First, thank you for keeping up with me.
Second, where do look for Folder? On the desktop? iPhoto?
Third, in replaying what must have happened, I think I have an idea of what went wrong. Originally, I moved my first Library to an external HD to free up space on my laptop, and I started a new Library. Some time ago, iPhoto must have spontaneously created a new third Library. It left what I am calling the second Library as the only visible folder containing an iPhoto Library. I was able to mount the small second Library when I restarted iPhoto by pressing Option and selecting the only Library that was visible to me. When I did that, unfortunately iPhoto disengaged from the huge third Library it had created. All along the third Library was invisible on the desktop as a folder--which is why I got into trouble. I ran out of space again and wanted to move the contents of what I now realize was a third Library to another external HD. But I couln't find that Library anywhere. Strangely, for the last three months, I did not know there were three Libraries, only two. The one iPhoto created as the third one worked perfectly when I would start up iPhoto. But now it is gone. Not even DiskWarrior can find it.

As has already been pointed out, you've got a lot of junk installed. The biggest problem is likely to be the Intego software, which is far too heavy-handed and is known to devour system resources and cause instability. You definitely need to remove it. Clinging to it simply because you pay for it is simply not logical if it is causing you problems. For less intrusive means of protecting yourself against malware, see my Mac Malware Guide.
You also need to clean out your login items list, which is extensive, and should uninstall any apps you're not using. (I see you have Turbo Tax 2011, for example... since it is now the 2013 tax season, you can probably uninstall the 2011 version at this point.) When uninstalling an app, be sure to use the uninstaller provided by the developer of that app. Do not simply drag it to the trash (unless it was purchased from the App Store), and do not use any general-purpose uninstallers like AppZapper or AppCleaner.
I'd also point out one other thing:
    Top Processes by CPU:
                 100%          com.apple.ShareKitHelper
    Top Processes by Memory:
              1.48 GB          com.apple.ShareKitHelper
Note the problems that ShareKitHelper is causing. This is a part of the system, but I don't really know what it's for or why it is misbehaving. Something is causing it to hammer your processor and devour RAM, though. This may be an indication of deeper problems with your system, or may clear up after you pare down your overloaded system a bit.

  • Bug in iPhoto 6?  Blank images in edit and slideshows

    Hi...
Have read a few threads on this topic, and it seems to be widespread. The usual helpful comments are made, but I really don't think that this has anything to do with something that the users are doing (e.g. copying libraries, moving libraries, etc..). Also, it seems to be happening to a number of people in exactly the same way, since iPhoto 6 was launched.
I have been using iPhoto since the beginning, have about 40,000 files in several libraries, and I have never seen anything like this.
The problem is that out of several hundred images in an individual library (uncopied, and not edited at the finder level or anywhere but iPhoto), a few of them are blank when you view them in edit mode or in a slideshow. This seems to be some sort of internal iPhoto corruption, and not related to the photos themselves (same camera and computer hardware that I have been using for years).
Also, the images themselves seem to be OK. When you export them from iPhoto to the desktop and open them in Preview or Photoshop, they are fine, and when you reimport them into iPhoto, they seem OK too.
Obviously, this is a big problem, and even though I can workaround for a single photo, I can't be doing this on an ongoing basis for all of my shots..
Anyone have any ideas? Is there a way to submit this question to Apple directly?
    Thanks very much!!
    Mike

I foolishly tried this on a separate Mac on a different library, that one with 22000 images that I had not edited (since the old iPhoto would just die a slow death on that sized library).
I actually only spent the money for iPhoto 6 (iLife's remainder package did not have any compelling use for me right now) and its ability to handle 25000 images.
Well, it is faster (i.e. it does not go to sleep for 12 minutes) if I click the scroll button but the blank images problem showed up there also. And ALL of those pictures were standard jpgs and not one was from a weird camera or ever modified or otherwise tweaked if that were an excuse for iPhoto 6 misbehaving with some pictures.
VERY annoying and very strange that they would not see this in Beta testing. Assuming they do test. So, folks, if you are planning to buy iLife for iPhoto, be forewarned. I will add this to my TO BUY OR NOT TO BUY blog entries at http://imran.com/media/blog/ so people are aware.
    regards
    Imran

  • Why does iPhoto keep corrupting my images?

For the past year, iPhoto 11 has been tremendously buggy on my early 2011 15" MacBook Pro.  It started under Lion and has continued apace under Mountain Lion.  It first started going haywire and crashing every time I tried opening it after any premature removals or disk use of my camera card in July 2011.  After starting in safe mode and having to rebuild my library several times, it seemed to settle down, and would generally work as long as I restarted the computer after a crash.  However, many of my photos ceased to show up properly--either they wouldn't be there at all, or the pictures and/or their thumbnails would be rotated the wrong way, sometimes with the display dimensions reversed so they appeared improperly squashed or stretched.  This issue mostly affected photos from c. 2001-2005, which I'd brought over from my iMac to save space on the older desktop computer.  (The iMac is backed up with my Time Capsule, but I haven't yet tried to see how that works within iPhoto, nor from my MBP.)
In the past few months, both before and after the installation of Mountain Lion and some updates to iPhoto itself, iPhoto has been acting strangely again.  Whether or not there's any "misuse" of a camera card that precipitates iPhoto's misbehavior, it's often been saying that thumbnails are corrupt and need to be rebuilt, but instead of fixing them it makes even more of them look worse than they did before.  Especially annoying, it seems to have permanently squashed, stretched, and/or rotated most of the images I'd chosen as Event preview images--i.e., it's done the most damage to a lot of the best pictures in each event, and it's been hitting a lot of the more recent photos than the first set of bugs did.  In addition, it quits itself spontaneously at least once per day, and gives an error message when it does so.
I used to love iPhoto, but its behavior lately, and the way it's been corrupting or failing to properly display thousands of my pictures, have been frustrating beyond words.  Has anyone else had problems similar to mine with iPhoto lately?  I really wish I'd never "upgraded" to the current version, because the new functions shouldn't come at the expense of losing or having to manually rebuild and tweak thousands of photos.  Can anyone recommend a solution to stop this from happening further, and to get things back to normal?
    Regards,
    Brian Green

    Where is your Library stored?
What rebuild did you do? iPhoto's own?
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • Movies in iPhoto won't sync

Over the years I have imported into iPhoto quite a few video clips shot on a variety of cameras and phones.  Once in a while I'd load one that wasn't properly formatted to play on my iPhone 4 or 1st gen iPad, but a quick trip thru Handbrake solved most of those issues.  Suddenly last night one set of clips taken during a visit to Park City Utah began to misbehave and actually blocked 136 new photos after them in the library from being synced to/from my iPad.
I've unchecked that particular event in the photo section of my iPhone in iTunes, but now two more clips have refused to sync, although they didn't block anything after them in the library.  I'm wondering if anyone else has had this or a similar problem.  I just ported over to Lion (profile info is obsolete) and ICloud this past week, but didn't have any syncing problems until several days later.  Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Ideas? . . . .  Anyone?

  • Sort Order Changes Unexpectedly in iPhoto Gallery

I frequently add new images to some of my iPhoto galleries, then publish to MobileMe. When I rearrange the images in a particular gallery, the sort order sometimes changes spontaneously. Once this occurs, I have to manually restore everything to its proper place. Needless to say, this is very irritating. Does anyone know why this happens and how to fix it?
    Thanks!

    Hello Alan,
If I understand you correctly the images will spontaneously change their order both online at me.com and in the MobileMe WebGallery within iPhoto. You may have a broken Album within iPhoto.
Try making a new MobileMe Gallery and add 50 pictures (make a few of them in an order that is distinct so you can tell if/when they move). Publish the Gallery and check the order. If its ok, add another few pictures and then check again.
Ultimately if the issue does not happen with the new album then you may want to delete the other album and re-create it (you could try rebuilding your iPhoto Library as well. See the link below).
If the issue happens with the new album as well follow http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2638 to rebuild your Library. I would try using the "Rebuild iPhoto Library database..." option.
Also if you are not already I would suggest making regular backups of your computer. With Time Machine you could restore back to before this re-arranging occurs should it happen again http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1553.
    Hope that helps.

  • IPhoto 11 trying to delete my facebook albums?

This is quite odd, but I just tried to publish a new photo album on Facebook via iPhoto 11. When I selected "publish a new album" it displayed a message saying that album X , Y, Z, etc., will be deleted.
Is there some way around this? Pretty strange :s
The even odder thing is that I still have the albums on my iPhoto album

Same thing happened to me too starting today. No new settings or anything. Spontaneously started to delete albums. Weird.
Here is the work-around that worked for me (for now anyway). I opened iPhoto preferences and deleted my facebook account- a warning came up that all facebook albums would be deleted from my application (not fb itself). Why not? I reopened iPhoto, I then went to 'share' another album with fb, the app asked fb account info and after a few minutes (during which the album did not upload) the app went back to the main iPhoto album page. I tried to upload the fotos again, this time all my regular fb albums reappeared in iPhoto and the current album uploaded without any problem. We shall see if this occurs again.
    Good luck!
