IPhoto 8.1.2 won't load

Hi all,
I have:
iPhoto 8.1.2
Macbook
OS 10.6.7
At some point iPhoto simply stopped loading. When it is opened, it shows a "blank" screen - no photos, nothing in the side bar. Then the beach ball just spins and spins and spins.
I have used Disk Utility to verify/repair permissions.
I have trashed the preference file.
I have logged out and back in.
I have restarted.
I have tried opening iPhoto while holding down the option and command keys to rebuild the library, but I still get the same screen.
I have logged in to another account on the same machine and iPhoto opens fine there, so I am guessing it is something to do with the database in my account.
I have copied the iPhoto library to an external HD as a backup.
Do I need to reinstall the app? It's about the only thing I've not yet tried.
TIA

As iPhoto works fine in the other account, we can guess the app is okay, and re-installing won't help.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto 4.0.3 won't load after moving files in HD

I moved some photo files around in my iphoto library on my HD. Then I went to open iPhoto and the photos won't load. It opens and says "loading photos" and the little wheel-thing just spins around. The pictures are still on my HD but won't load in iPhoto. What did I do, and now what do I do?

Well, a lot depends on the amount of damage that you've done. Hopefully, the changes you made are slight and you can put everything back the way that it belongs. However, based on your post, I suspect that such is not the case. I suggest...

  • Iphoto 6.0.6 won't load

ok, i had iphoto 2004, then recently, (after some software updates) it just won't load. i just get 'loading photos'. i decided to purchase ilife 2007. i get the same problem.
    this is what happens:
    1. it tells me that 'the photo library needs to be upgraded to work withis version of iphoto'
    2. i click upgrade
    3. it says it's upgrading, then examining, then updating
(in the meantime i get '44 photos have been found in the iphoto library that are not part of this library. would you like to import them?' i have tried both clicking no and yes...but the following has the same result)
    4. loading photos spins for 10-15 minutes
    5. iphoto quits
i have repaired disk permissions. and my iphoto library is still intact.
    please help. thanks- jen

    jmatic:
Look in the iPhoto Library folder and see if you have an Originals, Modified and Data folder. If so then try the following suggestions.
First, regarding the 44. Look inside the iPhoto Library folder for a folder titled Imports or Importing, don't remember which. Move it to the desktop and try importing from there.
Before importing those 44 first try rebuilding the library as follows: launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options.
If that doesn't solve the problem you probably will have to start over with a new library and import the Originals folder from the old library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the rolls from the original.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same rolls as the original library. However dates on the rolls may be different but can be edited as you would the roll title.
Once this is completed you can delete the Originals folder from the desktop and the iPhoto Llibrary folder. If desired, you can keep the older library folder to try other fixes on it.
If you don't have those three folders then the library is still at the V4 version and will take an entirely different way to recover. Post back and we'll go from there.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • My iphoto app just keeps going round and round. It won't load.

iphoto on my mac won't load. Keeps going round and round....

Before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff: What version of iPhoto. What version of the Operating System. Details. What were you doing when the problem arose? Did it ever work properly? Step-by-step descriptions of how you got to this issue. If something doesn't work, are there error messages? What happens when you try to do this thing? And what steps have you tried already to solve the issue. With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that a helper is simply guessing. With information, s/he may be able to get your issue resolved sooner.

  • My iphoto will not load, all it does when i open it is just show a blank iphoto and won't load any of my photos that were already in there.

My iphoto will not load, all it does when i open it is just show a blank iphoto and won't load any of my photos that were already in there. Any way to fix it ?

Remember: we cannot see your machine. There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 8 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS.  So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Basic things like :
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For instance: 'iPhoto won't export' is best explained by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • ***iPhoto Library won't load? HELP!

I had a problem with my external lacie drive.
disk warrior rebuilt the directory and the drive is fine.
Now however iPhoto will not load. At first it said I needed to upgrade the thumbnails and I did so but never knew if it was working?
I think the directory data file for iPhoto is messed up?
I really need to get my albums back up becuase that is how I sort my best
    photos etc..
I have had lots of iphoto crashes and I'm in the process of getting a more stable program. I have about 20,000 pictures in there. And everytime this happens it's always a disaster.
As of now I have imported some new photos into iphoto to continue my work flow. So, now iPhoto thinks this is the Library. I don't know what it's doing now, is it putting these new pictures in the same iPhoto library that won't load now?
I tried to load the "modified" iphoto library folder since I am hoping this will bring up all my best photo's I would have edited and go from there. But it won't load from iphoto. So I'm copying the modified folder to another drive and will try that.
Any advice on how to fix this mess?
    Much appreciated!

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2

  • Imovie won't load my itunes music and photos from iphoto.

Imovie won't load my itunes music and photos from iphoto. This also does not work on my garageband for itunes music. I have tried backing my itunes media and rebuilding but it has not helped. Anyone with a solution?

Note that you have to actually run the update - where you get the window where you have the choices to "Update" or "Restore" your iPod (you'll of course want to "Update"). It sounds to me like you downloaded the updater but did not actually run it to update your iPod.
    Hope this helps.

  • IMovie '09 Won't Load Photos from iPhoto

I recently upgraded to iLife '09 at work and at home. My iMac at wok does fine with the up grade but iMovie on my intel based MacBook Pro won't load photos from iPhoto. Anyone else have this problem or can suggest what my problem may be? My software is up to date and other programs are working OK.

Hello, i have also had the same issue. Basically when i click on the photo icon in imovie 09 the library doesn't show,it's just blank but also my itunes library isn't showing up either. The only way i can get photos and music into imovie is by dragging them into imovie but thats not the way the program is meant to work and would also like to fix this issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • My iPhoto won't load my thousands of photos! Will an upgrade help? Do I need to uninstall then reinstall iPhoto?

It just keeps "thinking". It won't load anything. I cannot back up my iphone photos because iphoto will never open.
What do I do? I have a backup of my iphoto library but I am not very technology savy.
I went to the genius bar and the guy was so rude I had to leave after the hour and a half of waiting and listening to him cut off my questions.
Please help!!! I love my photos and my music more than anything on this computer!

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
what do you see when iPhoto launches?
    what fixes have you tried?
    where is your library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?
As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?

  • IPhoto[v 9.5.1] on MBP won't load photos from iPod touch Gen4 32GB, even if let run overnight

iPhoto [v 9.5.1] on MBP won't load photos from iPod touch Gen4 32GB, even if let run overnight and don't let machine go to sleep.
MBP has 8GB Ram and separate video card using 2.3 Ghx i7 processor ... so i don't think it is a hardware issue.

    Hello A_MadDog,
It sounds like you are not able to import photos from your Camera Roll on your iPod touch.  I recommend following the steps in the article below for the issue you described:

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

What version of iPhoto do you have installed?  Is if one of the versions shown as not compatible in this screenshot?
If it is then go to the App Store and download iPhoto 9.5.  It will be free if you have an iPhoto 9 or later verson currently.

  • IPhoto 9.4.2 failing to load pix...menus greyed out

    Hello all.
I have a seven-year-old Mac Pro (2 x 2.66GHz Dual Core Intel) running OS X 10.7.5 and I've tried everything to fix this problem.
It arose when iPhoto (9.4.2) crashed as I was dragging and dropping a jpeg file into it from my desktop.
Now when I launch iPhoto it loads partially but won't load pictures and most of its menus are greyed out as below.
To fix it I have tried the following...
    1. Uninstalled and reinstalled iPhoto after downloading a new one from the App Store
    2. Dump the iPhoto plist files in /private/var/db/receipts folder.. are there any more I don't know about?
    3. Reinstalled the OS via recovery disk
    4. Installed a NEW OS 10.7.5 on one of my drives, used that a start-up, ran iPhoto from its original location... and it WORKS.
I am reluctant to move everything to the newly-installed OS but will if necessary.. but I'm fascinated to know if is there a simpler solution to this mystery?
    All help gratefully appreciated!

Restore your backup from before the crash - or less likely Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library
And drag and drop has issues right now so I would recommend exporting rather dragging and dropping
