IPhoto 8 freezes on startup, possibly due to Library data

I can't get iPhoto 8 to open any more on my iMac running Snow Leopard.  The program starts up, shows an empty iPhoto window, and then the spinning wheel just spins and spins until I force quit.
I suspect that this is because something has gone wrong with the photos and data in the Library file.  I say this because if I launch iPhoto while holding down the option key, and select an "empty" Library file with no data on it in my local hard drive, then iPhoto can open.  But when I try to open iPhoto with my real Library that has all my photos on it on an external drive, it now is freezing as described above.  Of note, my Mac crashed and rebooted while iPhoto was open, and then this startup problem began.  This has happened to me in the past, but if I reboot the Mac then iPhoto seems to work fine again.  That's not the case this time.
Also, in case this is important, my iPhoto library has grown to about 150GB in size.  Could this be part of the problem?  Is there a limit on how many photos or how much total data that iPhoto can handle?
Any advice to solve this would be greatly appreciated.

Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • IPhoto freezes on startup and unable to use dialogue box.

    Hi,
I just upgraded my Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.  I also updated my iphoto to the latest version (not sure how to check the current version but its the latest one as per app store today).
Now when I load my iphoto I get the spinning icon in the middle as well as the Dialogue box asking me if I want to update the Library, however the options are frozen and nothing happens when I click on the buttons.  I've left this for a few hours with no result.
I've tried holding down the option button on startup but the dialogue box with the new options are frozen.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers,

Back up your iPhoto library, Depress the option and command keys, launch iPhoto and rebuild the library

When making a photo book, my iPhoto freezes during uploading the book to the storey.  I have attempted this 4 times now and I don't know what to do! I know the file size is massive due quantity of large image files, but I don't want to reduce the image file size and compromise quality in the book. How can I get past this?
    My macbook air is os x 10.9, using iPhoto 11 9.5 (902.7).

Try Old Toad's solution here:   See   Re: iphoto : upload impossible to print a book
Try to boot into Safe Mode and order this way, or sign into a different user account and try to order as a different user.

  • After updating to Yosemite, I updated iPhoto. Alert said to convert my library to new iPhoto. Then alert said I needed to repair permissions. Then a freeze. Then iPhoto won't find and show my library. How do I fix this?

After updating to Yosemite, I updated iPhoto. Alert said to convert my library to new iPhoto. Then alert said I needed to repair permissions. Then a freeze. Then iPhoto won't find and show my library. How do I fix this? I can see the library icon on my external drive, but it doesn't show as a library in iPhoto. When I double click on the icon, nothing happens. When I choose it from alternate menu, doesn't open. Where do I get help?

Do you have a back up? What version of iPhoto do you have? Assuming 09 or later:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Faces problems; intrinsic to iPhoto '11 or due to library upgrade from '09?

I have been experiencing many problems with Faces in iPhoto '11 that I did not see in iPhoto'09. Can anyone tell me whether these are most likely bugs currently intrinsic to iPhoto '11, or caused by the upgrade of my 20,000+ photo library from iPhoto '09 to iPhoto '11? Has anyone found any workarounds for these problems?
    Examples of Faces problems include:
    (1) Photos in my Unnamed Faces smart folder (Face-is-unnamed) that show no unnamed faces
    (2) Mis-matches between Info frame list of faces in the photo and the face frames visible in the photo
    (3) Fewer photos appearing for face confirmation than stated; usually one less. Sometimes I am told there is one unconfirmed face, and none appear at all.
    (4) iPhoto offering faces as possible matches that look (at least to me) nothing like the face in question, (although they may be in the same photo), but failing to offer identical or near-identical poses of it.

The faces turn up in Events when someone accidentally imports the Library to another one
The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2

... Are there any iSight-related preference files that I could try deleting?
Every software app that can operate iSight has at least one preference (.plist) file. They are stored in your ~/Library/Preferences/ folder. (Look in the "user" library, NOT the hard drive library folder.) As one example, the preferences for Photo Booth are stored in "com.apple.PhotoBooth.plist".
You can try deleting them, but intermittent problems seem to me to be unlikely to be related to .plists.
Be sure to quit the app before you delete or move your preference file to avoid the possibility of having the existing values stored when the app closes.
If you do delete them, you will need to reset any preferences you want to be different from the default values that are set then the app restarts. Another way to reset an applications preferences is to move its .plist file(s) to a different location so you can easily restore them if resetting preferences does not fix your problem.
Your "flaky" diagnosis seems to me to be a good description. If the Apple Troubleshooting tips do not unquestionablycorrect your problem, and especially if your troubleshooting time is valuable, I suggest you have this Mac serviced while still in warranty. Intermittent problems are likely to only get worse with time.

  • InDesign CS3 freezes in startup on "SING Gaiji"

    Hi,
I can't find and easy solution to this. I am running InDesign no problem on my User account. I set up another User for someone else and InDesign will freeze on startup on the "Initializing SING Gaiji" something or other.
I go back to my profile and it's works still. Solutions?
    Thanks
    R

The problem permissions are on the folder (and its contents) in /Library/Application Support/Adobe/SING/
The easiest (though possibly not most secure) solution is to set the permissions to Read/Write for everyone on the entire folder /Library/Application Support/Adobe/ and its contents.

  • Mac Pro on 10.6.8 freezes after startup

Since updating to 10.6.8 my 2009 MacPro will freeze after startup when opening finder, safari and itunes (so far). No beach ball and ForceQuit doesn't work. Resolved only by a hard shutdown with the off switch and restarting.  Never a problem on restart. This problem seems identical to that described in an archived discussion (after an update to 10.5).  Refer: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2018112?threadID=2018112  .
I have followed those suggestions without success:
-run AHT and no issues found
-run disk utility to verify and repair permissions
-used Rember to check memory and no issues
Grateful for any suggestions; thank you.

It means that a third-party system modification you installed is causing the problem.
Reboot as usual (not in safe mode) if you haven't already done so. Don't launch any of your usual applications. Launch the Terminal application, copy or drag -- do not type -- the line of text below into the window, and press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 $7 } '
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
Next, do the same thing with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|com\.vix|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
That's one line, not two. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
    Next, this command:
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
Again, one line. Finally, one more:
    ls -1 /Library/{InputManagers,StartupItems}
Remember, this is all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer -- no typing, except your password.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • IPhoto freezing on print command before print menu appears

Has anyone encountered iPhoto freezing when selecting "print" from the file menu, before the actual print menu appears? I'm not using huge files here -- 600 KB photo, for example -- but I get the spinning beach ball of death every time I try to print a photo.
I have 3000 photos in my library, use Panther, have a five-year-old ibook with a 10 g hard drive so I house my library on an external hard drive.
Sound like a preferences file problem, for example? Any advice anyone can offer would help immensely.
    Thanks!

That's a whole different animal. You didn't move or rename any of the files from the Finder did you?
Do try cleaning out the cache files with OnyX. Also I'd run the 10.3.9 COMBO updater followed by a repair of permissions with Disk Utility. Reinstalling the latest combo updater can clear up a multitude of issues. Finally, is those don't work make a backup copy of your iPhoto Library folder and then launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select all of the options except the last one regarding orphans. Do empty your iPhoto library before the rebuild.
If the rebuild doesn't go as intended and is worse than the original library just trash it and go back to the backup copy. Sometimes it's necessary, most times not. Good luck.

    Identical Probem
    identical answer
a best practice to is to never have any computer program (including iPhoto) delete the photos from the card but to import the photos and keep them and then after at least one successful backup cycle has completed and then reformat the card --  I use three very large (32 GB) cards in rotation so I do not reformat for typically a year or more giving me one more long term backup of my photos
Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library database

  • IPhoto Freezes When Importing from Camera

Each time I've tried to import from my camera iphoto freezes during the import and I have to force quit it. I have tried copying the photos from the cameras folders to the computer and then importing from there but it also freezes. I did not have any problems importing using iphoto on 10.4 and I have now tried to import onto a friends computer (PC) and it works fine (so not my memory card or camera gone wrong).
Any suggestions on how to import successfully????????

    Nyssa
    Start with the troubleshooting basics:
    1. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
    2. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
    3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • Consistently freezes on startup

I have had this problem for a while, even before I upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard. Every time I start up my computer, the computer freezes. If I don't touch the mouse during the startup, it freezes at the gray screen with the wheel. If I wiggle the mouse it waits until the desktop pops up to freeze. After a forced restart, the computer it fine. It is just rather annoying that it does this. The only problem found when I run disk utility was this:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
I have heard that you can uninstall remote desktop to fix this, but when I use spotlight to search, nothing shows up for Remote Desktop.

My iMac was freezing on startup--gray screen with the apple logo then freeze. I also found that it wasn't going to sleep--the screen would sleep but the computer would still be running.
I tried everything to solve it, from starting in safe mode to repairing the disk and disk permissions to reinstalling 10.6. I checked my startup folder and nothing was there.
I simply unplugged my iPhone dock that I had plugged into a USB port on the back.
That seems to have been the problem. Whether it was the dock itself or something is wrong with the USB port, my iMac now starts up and shuts down without incident (and fast too).
Also, I have found that the system will sleep.
So, I guess unplugging a peripheral solved my issue (so far).

  • HT2638 Iphoto freezes when I try and delete a large amount of photos

Iphoto freezes when I try and delete a large amount of photos.  I have tried all of the first aid options.  Can I only delete small batches?  I am trying to organize and edit my 16K + library and deleting small batches is very time consuming.  And iphoto is running very slow...  Is there simply better software for a large library or tips to erase these photos?

(In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)

  • IPhoto freezes when I try to export

Hello, I use iPhoto for all my image storage/basic manipulation, but I am moving to Aperture for RAW image manipulation and things like that. I want to export all my photos so I can store them on another hard drive, and have them all in one folder (for now at least), but whenever I try to export them all, iPhoto freezes and I have to force quit. I could just drag the library folder to the hard drive, but I'd have to move the pictures out of the folders. Besides, the export feature should work, I shouldn't have to go out of my way to do it! Anyway, if anyone knows why/how to do this, please let me know! Thanks in advance.

    Yhbv24:
Try copying the Originals folder from the iPHoto Library folder to the other HD. The will be in folders that are representative of your rolls in iPhoto. If that copying to the HD fails you maybe can identify the culprit by checking the Console logs for the Finder.
Then you can put them all into one folder if that's what you want. Regardless of which way you go if you want to keep your keywords and comments so that Aperture can read and use then use the procedure described in Tutorial #1. That will write the keywords and comments to the original files for other applications to read and use. Do this before exporting or copying to the other HD.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB file backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
