IPhoto 8 won't import jpg's - unrecognized format

I am not able to import some jpg's into my MacBook. These are on a Xd card from my camera. I've been able to import photos from there as recently as yesterday without any problem at all. They are vacation photos so they are very important.
I'm using iPhoto 8.1.2 on OS 10.6.3. When I try to download my 180 photos or so, THREE of them import successfully, but the others are rejected. A pop-up window tells me that they can not be imported because they are a unrecognized format.
When I try to open those files in Preview, I also fail to open the jpg's. My Finder window detects them as a jpg, but I haven't found anything yet that will open them.
Any help would be appreciated!

Here are my comments about your other worthwhile comments:
"Consider using these best practice tips to avoid or minimize the impact of issues in the future:
_Ensure your camera has a full charge on the battery before you import (Or run off of AC if possible). {YES. I keep a full charge on the batteries at the start of every photo day and I did on this one too.}
_Ensure the date and time on the camera are correct before importing. {YES. It has been correct and remains so.}
_If you are using a media card reader and are getting regular failures, try using a different reader or the camera itself (The same is true about importing directly from the camera. Try a reader instead.) {I do use a card reader. It has always worked like a charm. Using a Digital Concepts model.}
_Plug the camera directly into the computer with a solid connection, no loose cables. Don't use a hub. {I will do that next.}
_Reformat the camera's media card using the camera itself between uses. {I normally do that but didn't this time. The manufacturer also recommends reformatting after EVERY use.}
_Alternate between multiple media cards during photo shoots (trips, etc) so that if one card goes bad (they are just little bits of plastic after all) you don't lose the entire shoot." {I'm likely to do that more often now. I keep three cards just in case.}
One more thought. My camera (an Olympus SP-560UZ) actually has problems every now and then using Alkaline batteries (even the best ones). It encounters a "zoom error" when turning on. The fix is to use PREMIUM rechargeable batteries. I had a hard time believing that one. But I tried the better batteries and it does make a difference for the better. They usually last me for six hours or more of keeping the camera powered; an important aspect when I'm hiking in the mountains and need to be prepared for anything.

  • IPhoto '09 won't import JPG files from my phone.

    Here's the step-by-step
    I have a new Samsung Evergreen phone that evidently stores photos in .JPG format, not sure yet if I can tell it to save them as .JPEG.
    On my MacBook, I have over 10,000 photos in my iPhoto library imported from several different cameras and copied from previous computers.
    I attach the phone to the Mac with a microUSB-->USB cable. (( BTW - MacBookPro is Intel Core 2 Duo ca August '09 ))
    Phone wants to know about USB mode.... I select "Media Player"
    iPhoto'09 (V 8.1.2 (424)) comes alive recognizes the device, finds the pictures, and offers to Import them. Cool!...  I select "Import All".
    iPhoto goes through the motions of importing all 22 files then displays a message "The following file could not be imported. (The file is in an unrecognized format.) this is followed by a list of all 22 files.
    I know that most, if not all, images in my iPhoto database are JPEG suffixed.  But from all I've read, JPG and JPEG are identical/interchangeable
    I've been a devout Mac user for over 2 years now and haven't ever encountered a problem with anything that needed to be resolved on this discussion board or even by calling Apple Support.  All I can conclude about this is that I'm doing something really, grossly, stupid.  But I sure don't know how to proceed.  Should I go to an Apple Retail store and have them figure it out?
    Appreciate any thoughts you folks may have on this.

    2 Possibilities:
    The phone is taking non-standard jpegs in some way of other
    Or
    The phone is broken and the jpegs are corrupted in some way
    Why do I blame the phone? Because neither the Mac nor the PC can access the files.
    So, back to Samsung for help on that one.
    No, no one from Apple reads or responds on here. As the Terms of Use make quite clear, this is a space for Users to seek help from other Users only. It's not a substitute for AppleCare. There are something in the region of 100,000,000 iPhones out there. It's inevitable that some devices will have issues, and some users. So, taken in that scale, the fact that - what -  a couple of hundred people have issues mightn't seem so appalling.

  • My iPhoto 2 won't import videos from my camera, only photos.

    Like the title says, my iPhoto 2 won't import any videos from my Cannon SD1000 digital camera, only photos. A friend says it's because I have an old version of iPhoto, which is true, but when I looked for updates it basically told me I need to purchase a new version of iLife. What can I do about getting a newer version of iPhoto, or making it so it imports videos? It's inconvient using the softwear that came with the camera only for a few videos. Thanks, I could use any help.

    JordanFox,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    Your friend is correct; iPhoto 2 does not handle video files. You'll need at least iPhoto 5 to keep videos in your library. There is no other way to get it than to purchase a copy of iLife, either version 5 or version 6. Upgrades from one version to another cost money, updates within a version (ex; 6.0 to 6.0.6) are free downloads from Apple.
    Try using Image Capture (in your Applications folder) to upload the video clips to your Mac. You can manage them yourself in your Movies folder.
    Regards.

  • IPhoto won't import JPG from backup

    I'm getting this warning when I try to drag pics from a Time Capsule backup into iPhoto. I was able to import 6500 pics after a crash (thank god), but for some reason From Jan 1, 2011 I can't do it.  They are in .JPG format.

    Drag them from the Master folder on the TM drive to a folder on the Desktop. Then see if they will import into iPhoto. Since they are coming from a Masters folder iPhoto may be thinking they are already in the library and won't import.

  • Jpeg files on camera are not recognized by iphoto and won't import

    Kodak EasyShare Z712 IS is connected via USB and recognized by iPhoto, however none of these files are importing because the files are unreadable and in an unrecognized format. An example file name and ext that is not importing is "100_2327.JPG".
    I do not have a card reader and currently the only way I can get photos from my camera onto my hard drive is using the USB cable.
    Thanks in advance for your consideration

    Had the same problem after ? upgrade (before everything worked well with my Canon EOS 450) Found out that import worked fine when connecting to my wife's iMac - so, it could not be the camera or formatting og the cameras memory...
    Problem was definitively located to connection via USB hub build in to Apple Monitor!!! When connecting to USB connector on keyboard, everything works well - connecting back to Apple Cinema Display (connected to MacBook) is reproducing the same error. I assume that the same may happen with other hubs? But not tested!

  • Iphoto '08 won't import photo

    When transferring around 200 photos stored on my HD to iphoto, one photo (tiff) was in an 'unrecognizable format'. It opens fine in photoshop, but in spite of trying several times, restarting the computer, and converting the photo to a jpg image iphoto refused to accept it. Is this due to file corruption about which I am completely ignorant, or something else? 'Get info'shows exactly the same details for this and for other photos that were transferred without a problem.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Any chance this is a compressed TIFF?
    Some TIFF files use proprietary LZW compression, and while most apps handled basic uncompressed TIFFs well, some don't support the compressed variety as there are license fees to pay to use the technology.
    If you can load it in Photoshop can you output it to something else like a PNG or BMP and try loading that or if compressed try saving as uncompressed TIFF.

  • Iphoto vidoes won't import into imovie

    I'm having several issues in imovie.  My first problem is, is that when I click on the iPhoto video icon in iMovie, there are no clips in it.  Somehow, all of my clips are missing.  I can however find some of them in an unfinished project up at the top.  These show up in the projects area but not anywhere down in the clip/event area; not in the iPhoto video section or, after much searching, not in any month or year event either.
    Next problem is, is that my newer iPhoto videos will not import from iPhoto to iMovie.  They used to automatically import as soon as I opened iMovie.  They are not importing automatically or by me trying to import them manually.  When I tried to import them myself, which I've done twice now, it looks as though they are actually importing, it takes several hours and then when it says it is complete, there are no new clips to be found.  Again, not in iPhoto video icon or in/under any year or month in the rest of the events.
    My last problem is that when I was looking in an unfinished project which is basically made up of all iPhoto clips, several of the clips in the project have a yellow triangle on them saying that the clip is missing.  I can see it in the project line but when I click on it, that is when it says clip info is missing.
    Any help is appreciated.  I hate to lose these clips!

    I have the same problem suddenly.
    all my iphoto movies do not show in Imovie 11
    I deleted the com.apple.imove.plist file (restarted it and it did not create a new file interestingly enough)
    I also rebuilt thumbnails and permissions in iphoto, nothing helped...

    Can't import black and white JPEG to iPhoto. Says unrecognized format. I've imported many black and white JPEG images.

    You didn't ask a question.  You must made some statements.
    With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
    what version of iPhoto are you using?
    what system version are you running?
    where are the photos from?
    what fixes have you tried?
    where is your library located?
    did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
    are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?

  • Can't import from camera-unrecognized format

    I've suddenly and unexpectedly encountered a problem importing photos from my camera to iPhoto.
    When I connect my camera to my computer with a USB cable and iPhoto opens, it attempts to show me the thumbnails of the photos to import.  However, all it shows are empty rounded squares where the thumbnails should be.
    When I click one of the import buttons (selected or all), I get an error that says,
    Unreadable files: [number]
    The following file[s] could not be imported. (The file is in an unrecognized format.)
    [List of filenames.  All JPEG format.]
    I reformatted my camera card, took a picture, and tried again.  Same thing.

    Hardware: MacBook 13-in., Intel Core 2 Duo 2.13 GHz, 2GB RAM
    Camera: Kodak EasyShare Z650

    Hi Cory,
    I am having the same problem with my Easy Share Z650 as well.   I would tend to agree it was due to a software update, since  it was working fine until after a recent update. If it was not due to a software update, then I would like to know what else the cause would be.
    Using the card reader built into my MBPro is a nice work-around, thanks Terence, for that tip.  However, I would prefer Apple fixed the problem so I can plug the camera in and not take out the card everytime.   I have heard comments that taking the card out all the time is harder on the camera than plugging in the cable and using USB.

  • IPhoto Won't Import JPGs from Photoshop CS2

    Hello,
    I find that if I save a JPG from PS CS2, it will open in Preview, and other applications, but will not import to iPhoto. I have read the other posts here on this topic, but they have not addressed my experience.
    For me, it does not matter whether ".jpg" is added or not. If I open the file in Preview, and simply re-save it, with no other changes, it will import to iPhoto as usual.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks!
    Michael Morrison

    Hello,
    Thanks for your thoughts.
    I do have color management turned on, and the profile is Adobe 1998, rather than sRGB. When I re-save the file in Preview, I am also saving it with Adobe 1998, so it does not appear to be the presence/absence of a profile, nor the type of profile (sRGB or Adobe 1998).
    Further, the article you suggested indicates that this is a problem related only to Power PCs, and I have this trouble on botht Power PCs and Intel machines.
    Further thoughts?
    Thanks again,
    Michael Morrison

  • IPhoto '09 won't recognize .jpg images for importing.

    The resulting pop-up window displays the otherwise normal images as Unix Executable Files. If I convert the .jpg to .jpg 2000, then it imports with no problems. Result is a MUCH larger file. Any fixes?

    Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
    1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
    2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
    Click to view full size
    3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
    NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
    If the above doesn't help try the following:
    1 - download Convert to JPG and Embed sRGB profile from  Toad's Cellar and drop copies of your problem files on it.  Then try importing the new jpegs that are created.

  • IPhoto '08 won't import RAWs from Canon EOS 450D

    I did install the "Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 2.1", but even so, I am not able to import RAW images from my Canon EOS 450D, only jpgs. The error message I get is:
    "The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data)."
    How do I solve this? The camera is brand new. Is a firmware reflash in order? How?
    Anyone else experience this?

    Try using Image Capture to upload the files to the desktop and then import from there.
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
    Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.
