Iphoto 9.1.5 problems importing pics into Iphoto

Since I upgraded my Iphoto 11 to 9.1.5 from the app store, I cannot import any pics into Iphoto.  The program hangs with beach ball spinning and I have to force quit the application!!!!!

What make of camera?
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Quicklook not importing pics into iPhoto

My Mum has a Mac Mini which is running Leopard quite happily (albeit slowly..). When she receives an email containing photos, she can open quicklook and click on the 'import to iPhoto' icon which then gets greyed out and the 'tick' icon appears to show that it's downloaded into iPhoto.
If iPhoto wasn't open it opens automatically. The problem is that the photo she selected doesn't appear in iPhoto. If I do a spotlight search for the pic it finds it in the home/library/mail downloads directory. Is this the right place for it to go?..

    Bump
Anyone got any thoughts?.. Is it something to do with where the iPhoto data should be stored?..

  • Problem importing videos into iPhoto 9.5 on Mavericks.

I have had Macs and iPhones for years but I have never used iPhoto until now.   I am trying to import a large collection of pictures and videos into iPhoto 9.5.  Pics import well, but for videos (avi, mp4, mov, etc) I get an error message "The file is an unrecognized format" and then I get a list of hundreds of videos that have failed to upload.  These videos are mostly ones taken with iPhones.  I have tried a few things and have even resorted to creating a new library, but the same result each time.   Anyone have suggestions?

I launched iPhoto while holding down option, I deleted the old library in finder and created another but the same thing happened. In my case the exact same count of 554 avi's and mov's weren't imported. It lists the files that
weren't imported in a scrollable window. I opened a few of the listed files in quicktime without issue.

  • Importing pics into iPhoto

Hi,  How do I import photos to iPhoto and keep the file names that I have assigned?  The program keeps reverting to the original file name assigned by the cameras.

Actually you are not getting it - I understand exactly
1 - file names are meaningless to iPhoto and you can not see them nor change them in iphoto (you still have not comprehended this)
2 - for the simple case which you seem to have with some cameras you very simply amke a smart album for each camera, select teh photos for that camera and use the iPhoto adjust time and date command to correct the entire set at once by a constant amount (the amount of the erorr in the camera's settings) - this does not require that you have nor that you own the camera (you still have not comprehended this)
3 - you claim to want to "keep the chronological order" and the best and easiest way to do that is to have the corect time and date on each photos - which is trivially easy to do) (you still have not comprehended this)
4 - no one suggested that you are exporting - we know that you are importing - the reference to exporting is only to try to explain to you how iPhoto works - you simply can not see or change file names in iPhoto - you can only change file names when you do an export - at no other time can you do anything with or about file names  (you still have not comprehended this)

  • Problems importing pics to iphoto

I'm working on a slideshow and I'm having trouble importing some photos to iphoto. I've followed the instructions by going to "add to library" on iphoto, I've selected the pic files but I get an edit that says "Unreadable Files: 17 the following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data)."
The files are jpg or tiff that was emailed to me and I retrieved from the internet.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Steve

    Steven,
I have had a similar problem. I get the same message as you. it all began when I installed Canon Eos viewer Utility and Canon file utility for my digital shots. I could not import them to I-photo and soon afterwards I lost the ability to work with I-photo. I cannot download i-photo 6 because I-photo 5 is not recognised. Any similarities to your problem?

  • HT2488 I imported pictures into iPhoto from my iPhone, when trying to find my pictures by clicking on iPhoto Library it is always empty. I had to create a new folder and copy the same exact pics in the new folder just to be able to access them.. help plea

I imported photos into iPhoto from my iPhone, however i cannot access them. When clicking on iPhoto Library where they should be stored the folder is blank but if i open up iphoto from the dock menu they appear. I had to create a new folder just to access them. help please, because making a new folder takes up unnecessary space.

There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Hi, I was importing pictures into iPhoto from my sd card and suddenly iPhoto quit.  Now it just won't open.  When I click on the iphoto icon in the dock, nothing happens!  Does anyone have a solution to this problem please?

Hi, I was importing pictures into iPhoto from my sd card and suddenly iPhoto quit.  Now it just won't open.  When I click on the iphoto icon in the dock, nothing happens!  Does anyone have a solution to this problem please?

As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?
If it does then your current library has been damaged and should be repaired: apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start
with Option #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Why cant i import Canon CR2 RAW pic into iPhoto?

Anyone know why cant I import Canon CR2 RAW pic into iPhoto???

Although all Canon RAW files are are suffixed CR2, they are not all the same. In fact, each model of Camera produces a different RAW. What camera do you have? Is it in the Supported List?

  • I attempted to import pics from iphoto to a folder on my desktop but somehow clicked desktop so 45,000 pics loaded, now computer freezes after trying to load everything.  possible to reverse this?  options?  restore hd from time machine?  pls help!!!

long story short...i attempted to import pics from iphoto to a folder on my desktop but somehow clicked desktop so 45,000 pics loaded to my desktop and now my computer freezes up after trying to load everything, and i'm not able to just drag the photos into the folder.  is it possible to reverse this?  what are my options?  restore hd from time machine?
a further question to restoring my hd from a previous backup on time machine...it says it will erase the hd.  does it actually erase everything or does it just erase anything that may have been added or downloaded since that backup?  this is confusing to me.
another problem which is part of the original problem is it seems that when i connect my iphone to my computer and iphoto uploads my pics...it doesn't just upload new ones, it duplicates and uploads every picture again...which is why i have 45,000 pics...they are 40,000 duplicates!  what's up with that?
I have a macbook pro, and recently updated the os to Yosemite.  the iphoto app is out of date, but i'll worry about that once i can figure out how to get all those pics off the desktop.  also, i recently purchased and installed 8g of new ram, but that hasn't seemed to help.
    any advice would be appreciated!
    thanks!!

    thanks for replying.
the booting and walking away and then attempting to browse and clean method is what i've been trying to do.  it won't let me drag and drop and just freezes up and goes to sleep after 2 minutes.  it's a never ending battle with very few results. which is why i questioned the method of just restoring the hd from a time machine backup.
do you think restoring the hd from time machine will resolve the issue with all pics on the desktop?  and everything will be as it was from the date i restore it from?  sorry, as you can tell, i'm not overly computer savvy.
i have a really old desktop mac...i can try connecting the two...how does one boot a mac in 'target mode'?
as for the iphoto cleaning and organizing issue...that is what i was trying to accomplish with importing them to a folder.  was going to browse and clean from there...but somehow imported to desktop which is what's complicating everything.  once i get them off the desktop i can work on the iphoto issue...which as i mentioned...i didn't take 45,000 pics...i've just taken about 4,500 over the last few years, and they are being duplicated in iphoto.  this was my attempt to clean it out entirely and start over.  it will basically be a lot of deleting.
one problem, seems to lead me to more...which is just my luck.  :-)
    thanks again, for your help.

  • Importing jpg into iPhoto

I just get my mac mini and have never used mac before. The problem I am having is I transfered all my pictures form my xp box which are in jpg format but I can't import them into iPhoto. It says they are in invalid format or something to that effect. Any ideas Thanks

--First thing to know and remember is this...Do not drag any images, folder of images into the iPhoto Library in the Finder. Images have to be imported into iPhoto within the application. Do not scan images and save them into the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder. Save them to another location such as the Pictures folder or even the desktop. You can then import them into iPhoto.
--You have a folder of images on your hard drive and want to import them into iPhoto. Drag the folder of images into an open iPhoto Library window and the folder of photos will be copied into the library, resulting in a new roll with the name of the folder. You now have two copies of those photos, the ones in iPhoto's database and the ones on your desktop. You can keep the ones on your desktop that you just imported as backup or you can delete that folder.
-- you scan a picture/pictures and save it in a folder. You cannot scan directly into iPhoto or the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder.
You want all your photos in iPhoto so you import them into iPhoto.
Now you have two copies of that picture/pictures, so you can delete the originals that were in the scanned folder and keep the one/ones that were imported into iPhoto.
-- You download pictures from your camera into iPhoto.
There is now one copy of each of the pictures.
You want to change something about a picture you imported, such as
cropping it or changing the size, or changing the orientation.
Once you do that to a picture, you now have two copies of the picture
in iPhoto, the original and the edited one. The edited one will be in the library organize view. The original is packed away in an Original folder in your iPhoto Library folder under the date of the roll. You can always revert to the original by control clicking on the photo and choose "revert to orginal" You will not have this choice if you used iPhoto Diet to get rid of the Originals.
(a quick note on cropping within iPhoto...when you are in edit mode, you automatically will be in the crop mode with cross hairs to highlight the crop area. To finish cropping you must click the crop button and then go back to library view and your cropped picture will be there.
3.You want to use Photoshop or another graphic program to edit a picture in your iPhoto library.
You can open up prefs for iPhoto and choose "when double clicking on
photo ..do" choose "other" and select Photoshop. Now you can edit all
pictures in your iPhoto library in PhotoShop by double clicking. If you save the photo with the same name and as a flattened file it will be saved right into iPhoto and you will see the changes. If you don't want to save it into iPhoto then do a "save as" and save to the desktop. You will then have the original photo still in iPhoto and your new edited photo on the desktop.
Or, with iPhoto open, you can drag a picture from the library window
to your desktop (you see a + sign on the pic you are dragging). You now
have two of the same picture, one in the iPhoto library and one on your desktop. You can open up the one on your desktop in any graphic program and work on it. The one in iPhoto stays the same. You can also share/export the picture/pictures to your desktop or folder to work on them or do batch processing, etc. You will still have the originals in your iPhoto Library.
Or, you can open up the ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library/folders and option drag any
picture out of the folder to your desktop. Notice that you will see a plus sign while dragging the photo. This is copying the file to your desktop
I would advise anyone not to do this as they might forget to use the option key and drag the photo out. Next time you open iPhoto the photo will be missing.

  • Can't import photos into iPhoto

I have a Sony DSC W5 digital camera. For five years I have been able to import photos from the Sony camera into iPhoto. In the last two days I can no longer import photos into iPhoto. I get an "unrecognizable file" prompt. I can drag the photo files onto the Finder and view them there. The photo on the Finder has a .jpg suffix just as all the other photos in iPhoto. Anybody got an idea on how to solve this problem? Thank you.

get the photos off of the card and reformat the card using the camera format command
Can you import the photos from disk once you have moved them from the camera to the disk? If not try opening one preview and saving as to create a new file and import that

  • When you import photos into iphoto, is a copy also saved on hard drive?

I photographed a wedding a couple months ago, and had all my photos edited, just needed to burn them to discs for the couple. Well when I opened up my iphoto (08 version I believe, also I'm running OSX 10.5.8 if it helps.) a few weeks ago to export them to a CD it had dumped all of my photos from the library, I had to search and search to find them on the drive. When I found them and imported them into Iphoto (here lies my big problem) nearly every one of them is thumbnail size. I've tried everything I know of, I tried resizing them and exporting them under a different file name, Nope. The worst part is it has replaced itself on the HD so that now both the iphoto and the HD copy are thumbnail sized. Some of them are still full size, but not all of them. Any ideas on what to do?

The Original photos would be inside the iPhoto Library in the Originals folder.

  • When importing photos into iPhoto I get an error Unreadable Files:

When importing photos into iPhoto I get an error Unreadable Files: The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data).
I can open the JPG in question with PREVIEW, photoshop etc.. actually if I try to import a photo that I had originally imported it also fails..
    Please help... Thank you..

I too had this error message (and to be honest, it was becoming a bit of a pain). I resolved it in a slightly different way to Terence.
I had 10 photos that were allegedly unreadable; however, as Terence rightly says, they are duplicates. When I opened iPhoto I mad a note of each of the files concerned and did a Spotlight search throughout my hard drive.
For each photo, there were four or five duplicates. I deleted all but one of each of the photos and then reopened iPhoto. No more error message.
The original problem stemmed from importing my files directly from an external device I was using with a previous computer [that was running XP].
    Anyway, hope this helps.

  • Unable to import keywords into iPhoto 8

I have some photos (.jpg) in 2 particular folders which display keywords when I right click on them and choose "get info", but when I import them into iphoto 8, the keywords are not imported. The strange thing is that the keywords in most of my other photos do get imported into iphoto 8, and even a few of the other photos in the same folder as the ones whose keywords don't get imported are imported.
I cannot see any difference in parameters between those photos whose keywords do get imported into iPhoto 8, and those which don't.
Any idea why that might be the case?
    Thanks in advance

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. How were those keywords added to the image files. iPhoto only reads the ITPC keywords so if those keywords were not added to that field by some application they will not be recognized.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • How can you import pictures from the iphoto app to your mac book pro into iphoto on a mac book pro using mavericks?

I've tried to look this up on the app, and it tells me to use the iTunes file sharing and I can see anything with this trying to use both. I'm trying to keep my pictures in chronological order. Does in know how I can use this? Any help I would greatly appreciate. Thank you!

OK. This is two separate issues. To import pictures on your iPhone into your MBP, you can use iPhoto or the Image Capture app (in the Applications folder).
To use iPhoto, connect your iPhone to your Mac with its USB cable & launch iPhoto. Your iPhone will be listed it in the "Devices" panel on the left. Choose it & you will get a window where you can import all or selected photos as either "split events" or as a single event. If you need help with this, try opening iPhoto's built-in help & selecting the "Import Photos" item. That will open the Import photos from iPhone or other mobile phone help topic. Expand the Import photos from iPhone section & study it. It should answer all your questions about this better than I can!
To use the Image Capture app, you connect the iPhone & select it just like above. The app has several options for importing images, but what you may find useful if you do not want to import directly into iPhoto is that you can just drag any of the iPhone's displayed items onto the desktop or into a folder like you would any other file & they will be copied to that location.
As for organization of items in iPhoto, there are four ways they can be grouped for display (by event, by photo, by face, & by place). All except by faces offers a "By date" sort choice in the iPhoto View > Sort Photos menu item.
