IPhoto 9.3 - keywords issue

I'm having an issue where keywords input to the keywords section of the info panel by manual typing immediately disappear.
When I noticed this, I attempted going to the next photo and returning which did not work.
I also, tried quitting and restarting iPhoto which results in the keywords I've typed that disappeared immediately now being visible...so it is holding the keywords, just having an issue with displaying them until an application restart.
Next, I made a duplicate of my library using the Rebuild Library command in iPhoto Library Manager 3.8...this seemed to solve the problem for all of about 5 minutes...after a few clicks, it went right back to the same issues.
Now I'm discovering different behavior after an application restart.  At first, it will work properly, then will not even let me input any text (not even a character) into the keywords section of the info panel.  I can still use the keyword manager to input keywords, but I much prefer to type them.
I first noticed this issue when I was inputing keywords, while accessing my Mac from another Mac using Screen Sharing.
This was also the first time I've used iPhoto since updating to 9.3, so I'm wondering if it's a 9.3 bug.
Once my latest Time Machine backup is complete I was thinking about uninstalling/reinstalling iPhoto to see how that works using the method I found here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3716732?start=0&tstart=0
I'm very concerned about losing all the rich metadata I've input to iPhoto.
Any suggestions or ideas would be much appreciated.

I'm having the same problem, with 9.3, but had it with previous version sometimes also.  Sometimes the keyword "sticks", sometimes it doesn't.  Now most of the time it doesn't.  Similar problem with names from time to time.

  • Keyword issues -- applied unexpectely, deleted unexpectedly

    --- Keyword glitches -----
I've repeatedly encountered some issues with adding keywords to photos in iPhoto 11 (9.2.3).
For example, I'm pretty sure I did not apply "keyword A" to a dozen photos ... but  there it is along side the correctly applied keywords.
So I select the images with the mis-applied "keyword A" and delete "keyword A" in the info panel. This works fine, one-photo-at-a-time. But I get good AND bad results when trying this over a range of photos. Often iPhoto deletes other keywords, or I find that photos that should still have three or four keywords have none. And only ONE was deleted. These are huge cataloguing problems.
I can't afford to use an application that's spurious in these ways. Corrupted iPhoto library? Perhaps. If so, that's just another reason to move on because I have less that 300 photos within, and if iPhoto can't handle that ...
And sometimes iPhoto is achingly slow, lots of beachball time.
As usual Apple's documentation is of little help.

This and the speed issue suggest a minor glitch in the Library.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Aperture keywords issues

Is it just me or are there major issues with searching by keyword?
I've just given three pictures the same keyword and when I use the filter with 'Library' selected only one of them is found. The un-found picture is in an iPhoto library - do keywords not work on managed files? if not what is the point of inputting the keywords?
A second point - how hard is it to go from aperture to lightroom? Will lightroom import the projects along with their keywords from aperture.

Lightroom will not import whole projects and you will lose all your adjustments. I believe that if you export your images with xmp files, that those file will contain the keywords, and Lightroom will bring them in. Do a test. Don't be in a big hurry blow out your Aperture libraries. Lightroom is very different from aperture, and it took me several months to figure out that I was fighting it's workflow, and it was actually costing me significant amounts of time. YMMV.

All my photos in the iphoto have disappeared, not sure if this related to any iphoto upgrade or other issue, tried to find the photos through the finder (JPG or photo) but failed, can you help me to get back my photos please?

Help us to help you: There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on seven different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary from version to version and OS to OS. So before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. More information means you get better assistance. (And no, more exclamation marks do not get help faster or make your issue seem urgent. They just make it seem like you have a stuck key )

  • Why is iPhoto applying one keyword to all photos?

I have been meticulously adding keywords to a very large group of photos to help organize them. A few times now, a keyword I applied to a selection of photos - maybe 100 out of thousands - ends up applied to my entire photo collection. Anyone know what I did, if anything, to make this happen? It's a real drag, considering the only way to fix the issue is to remove the offending keyword from all of my photos in one fell swoop and then go back and re-do the ones that I DID want tagged. So frustrating!
The last time it happened, I had checked after applying one keyword to a few hundred photos, and they grouped together perfectly when I ran a search. Twenty minutes later after working on some other keywords, suddenly all of my photos had the keyword that had just previously worked fine.
Love to hear your suggestions and ideas.
    Thanks,
    D

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
That does seem extraordinary. I can see how that might take an hour or so, but nothing like that long.
Here’s a test. Grab a folder full of those images and drag it to the desktop. See how long that takes.
Then try import the same folder and compare the time. (It will take a little longer with indexing etc)
This will tell us if the issue is in iPhoto on more general.

  • Keyword Issues

    Someone help!
After upgrading to Aperture from iphoto. I seem to be getting weird issues with my keywords, in particular in association with smart albums. I have a keyword with my daughters name and when I create a smart album to show all 2000+ photos with her then all is fine, however some times there are no photos in this smart album if I query the smart albums seetings there are 3 keywords for her name (I have double checked the keyword HUD and there is only 1 keyword with her name).
This happens with various keywords in the smart albums settings.
    Any suggestions

You have identically named keywords in several groups. The keywords from iPhoto are located in the "iPhoto" keyword group, in some other keyword group you have the same keyword (the keywords are not the same, but their name is).
    To fix:
    1) decide which is the keyword you want to keep
    2) find all the images with the similarly named, but incorrect keyword
    3) apply the right keyword from the right keyword group to the images
    4) remove the incorrect keyword from the images
    5) remove the incorrect keyword
Sounds tedious but it's surprisingly fast.

  • IPhoto - Sharpness and Softening Issue

Hi, I think the iPhoto sharpness issue is quite annoying as I like to just view the photos quickly in the edit mode and to fit the edit window size. But they just don't look sharp enough. I have tried the trial version of AcdSee for Mac and the preview looks a lot sharper and lively. But it seems that AcdSee is not making the software fo Mac anymore, is there any other suggestion for a quick photo management software that display the true sharpness and resolution of the photos?

    What format is that disk?
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Iphoto album sort order issue.

Stadard iphoto album (iphoto 11) being manually sorted suddendly reverted to what appears to be a random sort order.  The order now is not by date, camera, keyword, or any other.  It appears to have set its own manual order.  How can this happen? Is there a way to revert back to the previous sort order?  Even if I had mistakenly reset the manual sort, wouldn't it default back to one of the standard sort criteria?

want to replace the original photos in the event
You don't have to.  If you look at the photo in the Event that tghe photo came from you'll find that it has been edited.
The photos in albums are only pointers to the original photo in the Event.  There's no file duplication in the process of adding a photo to an album.

  • PS Album to iPhoto importing -- keeping keywords?

I have decided to move from PC to mac and I am trying to move a couple of hundred photos from Adobe Album on my old PC to iPhoto on the mac. All of my photos had keyword/tags in Album. Is there a way to transfer these keywords to iPhoto?
I was planning on using a backup of my Adobe album to move the files but now I am wondering if there is a better way. I would appreciate any info you can send my way. Thanks!

I tried to drag the entire album, buy it opens, and only shows part of the pictures that are in that album in iPhoto. It appears that iMovie media can only see the jpeg pictures, not the ones that I saved in photoshop format. Thank you.

  • Adobe Bridge Keyword issue

I am using Photoshop CS4 along with the Adobe Bridge that downloaded with it. I installed the software on an iMac with Snow Leopard as the OS. Using the Bridge, I assigned keywords to about a thousand images in numerous folders. I used the Bridge with these keywords to search for my images and it worked just fine. Then I upgraded the OS to Lion and immediately had a significant issue with searching in Bridge. Each time I identified a keyword to search (in the Edit-Find menu), the results came back "no files found". It was by accident that I discovered that, in order for the Bridge to recognize they keywords, I had to double click and open the folder first in Bridge. Once the folder had been opend and then closed, the keywords were activated. Needless to say opening each and every folder containing images has been very time consuming.
I am considering purchasing a new iMac this summer. It will probably have the new Mountain Lion OS in it and I will purchase CS6 to install in it. I am concerned that when I transfer all of my images into the new computer, I am going to have the same Bridge issue, and will have to go through this entire "open & close each folder in Bridge" exercise again in order to search by their keywords.
Has anyone had this issue to deal with? If so, I sure would like to know how you dealt with it.

I have exported my keyword list and saved it to my desktop.
If that was the list of your old system you only have to use the option import keywords from the same menu used to export the list. This will add all your keywords from the old list to your new list. If you use clear and import the old ones will be replaced by the list of the imported keyword list (so if you are not sure also make a back up of the existing list before using 'clear and import'
I also did a search of my entire computer and that file name does not show up.
You probably use Spotlight for this and spotlight is not very good in finding files hidden in the library, try the free 'Easy Find'
I use CS4 and the file in the path you provided is: Bridge CS4 Extensions. However, there does not appear to be a Keyword file in that folder.
You are in the wrong library, the extensions are sited in the library on root level (the computer) and you have to be in the library in your user account.
I overlooked the fact that you are on Lion and that has the user library hidden by default. Do a Google search to retrieve the user library, there are easy temporarily ways and a bit more difficult to make it visible permanent
Once I go through an entire search with "include non-indexed files" checked, have all of the folders/files that have been searched through now been indexed? And does that mean that whenever I perform a search again, I no longer have to have that box checked?
If you go to the Find menu and in the source field select your parent folder that contains all your subfolders the search will go through your entire image content.
You only have to check non indexed files once but after the first search (takes long to index) the option is not taking that much time again so no objection to leave it on.

  • IPhoto not recognizing keywords created in CS3

I've added keywords to files (both psds and jpegs) I've created in Photoshop and Bridge (CS3). If I look at the file info in Finder, the keywords are there. But when I look at the info of the file in iPhoto, the keywords don't show. Also when I create a Smart Album to match the keywords, nothing shows.
    Any ideas?

You shouldn't reverse engineer answers from your initial hypothesis
Not what I did. I searched on Google and found only references to jpeg and tiff supporting IPTC and none to psd. Have you tried that? I'm not sure that the Finder supports IPTC data, only limited Exif.
Why would photoshop be writing for the benefit of the Apple operating system when it's cross platform?
Because they're nice people? Or because both Oses support basic metadata comments?

  • Importing photos from ZoomBrowser into iPhoto without losing keywords and star ratings

I have been using Canon's ZoomBrowser EX on my Windows Vista laptop. I have just bought a MacBook Air running Lion. I would like to import all of my photos to iPhoto, but when I do this I lose all of the keywords and star ratings I have associated with my many photos. Is there any way to import the photos into iPhoto while retaining the keywords and star ratings so that I can use them in iPhoto? Doing this manually would be impractical due to the large number of photos involved.
    Thanks.
    - Charlie

    Keywords:
Iphoto can certainly import them if they are written to the correct fields of the standard metadata. They key question is can your Windows app write them to the files?
    Ratings
There's no real way to share ratings via standard metadata, but if you can write the keywods, then you can quickly tag the pics with simple keywords (1star, 2star) and when imported to iPhoto recreate your rating system.
So, the question is really about your existing software and what it can do.

  • Aperture + iPhoto for iOS resolution issues

I'm trying to test out syncing some of my photos from Aperture 3.2.3 to iPhoto for iOS 1.0 (173) on an iPhone 4S in anticipation of getting my new iPad. Unfortunately, I'm running into problems. It seems no matter what I do, my images appear as 3.6MP.
My understanding is that iTunes syncs the previews generated by Aperture to iOS devices instead of the original files. I'd be happier with the originals, but I can live with just previews. My main goal right now is to use the iPhone/iPad as a sorting device: eliminate the garbage and then do final editing on my color calibrated iMac.
In Aperture, I've made a test project that I'm syncing with iTunes. I only have one photo in there. In Aperture's Preferences, under Previews, I set the following:
New Projects automatically generate previews: checked
Use embedded JPEG from camera when possible: unchecked
Share previews with iLife and iWork: Always
    Photo Preview: Don’t Limit
    Photo Preview quality: 12 High
I Deleted the Preview of my image, then Generated a Preview (holding option while right clicking). I quit both Aperture and iTunes and relaunched Aperture. Launched iTunes, unsynced my Project with my phone, opened iPhoto on the phone to make sure the image/project was gone, quit iPhoto on phone and resynced.
I’m still ending up with a 3.6MP image even though the original is 16.1MP (5.01MB).
Images from the built in camera on the iPhone 4S show up as full 8MP images, so I don’t think it’s a megapixel limitation.
I just tried Exporting a Master from Aperture to a folder and then syncing that folder. Same exact issue occurs after syncing with iTunes: 16.1MP image changes to 3.6MP. 3264x4928 px changes to 1536x2319 px.
I wonder if it’s an iPhone limitation. I’ll have to do more testing when my iPad arrives.

I believe the the Previews are optimised for use on the iOS device, hence the reduced size.

  • Iphoto emailing and "events" issue

I am not sure if these issues are related.  2 weeks ago I began having and issue where 3 of my events had no key image.  It also said there were 0 photos in the event.  If you clicked on the event, you could still see there were photos in there.  I did a little research and discovered that I may have caused this when I emptied iPhotos trash recently.  I didn't know this had to be done and there were several thousand photos in there.  Since then I have also updated to Yosemite.  I have now noticed that I cannot email photos from iPhoto anymore.  I can go through all the steps but after I hit send, the wait bar goes to the end and nothing happens.  I let it sit overnight once and it was still waiting.  I assume these issues are related to either me emptying the trash or updating to Yosemite.  Anyone have any ideas how fix this?  I am using OSX 10.10.2 and iPhoto 9.6.

Go into iPhoto's Accounts preference pane and delete the email account that's there.  Then add it back and try to email again.
A better solution, IMO, is to set Mail as iPhoto's email client in iPhoto's General preference pane.  That allows you better access to Contacts, a sent copy created automatically and also has templates in the stationary section similar to iPhoto's.  Mail is also more reliable.

  • IPhoto 11 Upgrade/Transfer Issue

    Hi there,
I have just bought a new iMac and migrated over all of my content from my old MacBook where i had my Photo library installed on an external drive. This included an upgrade from Photo 9 to 11 and I installed the 9.1 update first as well.
The problem comes from the linking. When I originally started with iPhoto I imported pics into my library but had them sitting in two other folders, then after a while I put new pics straight into iPhoto itself so they were going directly into that folder.
All fine and this worked well, the problem now is since this move and upgrade all the links to the ones sitting in other folders are broken even though they still appear seemingly correct as links in the iPhoto/Masters directory. I cannot see a way of knowing exactly how many pics have broken links - it is thousands - and I can't see a way of fixing these links that is not the painfully slow one at a time method. Even this is a lot harder than it should be as I am getting constant bombardment of messages of Files Not Found for ones I am not even working on.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Craig

I had similar issues to those mentioned here after moving my iPhoto '09 library from an iMac to a MacBook and then upgrading the library to iPhoto '11. What I had forgotten to do before the upgrade was also copy the referenced folders where many of my older pics were.
I had to go through a painstaking process of fixing the records in the RKMaster table. The problem you are getting, I believe, is because iPhoto '11 no longer uses the file aliases that iPhoto '09 used. What it does instead is store the location of the referenced file in the BLOB column fileAliasData in the RKMaster table. If you use SQLiteManager you can save the contents of a BLOB column to a file, which in this case is in plist format. Inside the plist you'll see a key called FileAlias with some base64 encoded data. That data points to where the original file is/was, which probably has a reference to your old server.
The only solution I found was:
    - copy all my referenced images to the folder structure under Masters in the iPhoto Library folder
    - put the correct path in imagePath in RKMaster
    - set fileIsReference = 0 and fileAliasData = null in RKMaster so that iPhoto now treats the file as managed, and not referenced.
Note, that if a file is under the Masters folder structure, the path in imagePath must be relative to the Masters folder. For example, if the image file is in /Users/kevin/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Masters/2008/Christmas/img001.jpg then what you need to put in imagePath is just 2008/Christmas/img001.jpg. iPhoto assumes this is under the Masters folder for non-referenced images.
Incidentally, you can use the steps above to convert any referenced files in your library to managed, allthough it's pretty tedious. I did it, and it was worth it as I now have my entire iPhoto Library inside the iPhoto Library folder which is completely transportable.
There are 2 things which Apple could have done a lot better:
    - if you're upgrading an old iPhoto library, it should warn you if some of the files are unavailable, because you won't find out about it until you try to edit one of the files (the thumbnails are still there), by which time it might be too late to recover the old files
    - there should be an option for consolidating an iPhoto Library which is a mixture of managed and referenced into the iPhoto Library folder to be completely managed, just as iTunes lets you do for music.
