Iphoto 9.4.2 crashes- import, export, editing, lost photos-Is there a fix?

I have had multiple crashes with iphoto 9.4.2 on my Mac OSX- 10.7.5 while importing, exporting and --most infurating of all-- while editing. Upon restart all photos were lost - that is there is record of the event but no photos show up in that space. I have had reimport them multiple times. But upon reimporting, iphoto seems to think they are still there and asks me if I want duplicates made.
Below is a recent report-

iPhoto 9.4.3 crashes when trying to sync photos from IPAD running 8.1.  Any ideas on why ?
iPhoto runs and keeps trying to read the iPad photos cycling thru a lot of times eventually crashing.

There may be a corrupted video or image file on your iPad.
Try to download from the iPad using Image Capture instead and save the photos to a folder. If that succeeds, you can check the files for corruption before importing them to iPhoto.

I am going on an Alaskan Cruise that has no internet service, can I still import and edit my photos? Do I have to have internet for Lightroom 5?  Any help with this question would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

If you have purchased the perpetual license version of Lightroom, no internet is needed.
Someone else can probably answer if you have the Creative Cloud version, but I seem to recall that it only has to "log in" to Adobe to check that you've paid once every 30 days.

  • IPhoto 9.5.1 will not export edited versions of my photos.

I cannot export edited versions of my photos (specifically cropped photos) in iPhoto 9.5.1 using Mavericks. This is driving me nuts. I've tried duplicating the photos, saving them in different formats . . . no dice. This is very annoying. Without photo editing, iPhoto is pretty useless.

You can use 3rd party editors from within iPhoto.  Here are some of those:
Some Image Editors That Support layers:
    Photoshop Elements 11 for Mac - $79
    Rainbow Painter - $30
    Imagerie - $38
    Acorn - $50
    Pixelmator - $60
    Seashore - Free
    GIMP for Mac - Free
    Xee 2.1 - free
I would suggest you try one of the free ones and make sure that iiPhoto will export the edited version before you purchase an editor.  The following is for Photoshop Elements but would be applicable to most of the editors listed above, particularly the part about keeping the file extension as jpeg and not one created by the editor.
Using Photoshop Elements or Photoshop as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note 1: screenshots are from PSE 10
Note:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

  • Update to OS 10.9.5 coincidental with iPhoto 9.5.1 crashing when exporting.

However, I can still access photos by emailing them to myself, anyone else have similar problems caused by latest mavericks update? Is there a fix in the works?

Not sure why you are confused that since we can not see you we verify the information - especially since eyou reported issue is exactly what happens with certain older versions and there have been no reports of it with iPhoto 9.5.1
Do you have any third party export  add ons installed?  If you create a new library (hold down the option key while launching iPhoto until the select library window appears you can create a new library) and import a few photos into this test library does it work correctly?

  • Captivate crashes importing or editing an audio file

    Hi,
I have created software simulation demos with text to speech voice  in Captivate 5.5 on Windows 7 .  Recently, for one of the projects, I replaced the TTS voice by importing  audio files in mp3 format successfully. Whie repeating the same efforts in  another project, Captivate crashed.  This behaviour is true across all new and existing projects while importing, or editing audio. Captivate freezes under the following circumstances:
    1.
    Open an existing/new  project.
Import audio to slide - mp3. The file is successfully imported.
The Captivate hangs soon after the import.
    2.
    Open an existing/new  project.
Import audio to slide - mp3.The file is successfully imported.
Save the file, and continue to work with the application.
Click on Edit Audio option in the Properties . The Captivate hangs.
Note: Clicking on Remove Audio option in the Properties executes without any problem.
    3.
    Open an existing project.
Select audio for a slide, and click Edit Audio
    The Captivate hangs.
Has anyone encountered similar problems? Please help.
    Regards,
    Nalini

Thanks Rodward for your response. I found the solution by digging through the forum archive. I simply renamed my preferences directory in C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Local\Adobe\Adobe Captivate 5.5 folder. That fixed the issue.

  • IPhoto does not see any changes after editing a photo in Camera Raw

    Hello everyone ,
I have some small problem with my iPhoto. I have set up Camer Raw in iPhoto as  External Editor, so when I click on edit in IPhoto,
automatically opens my JPG in Camera Raw. After editing in Camera Raw I'm clicking on ,,Save image" then destination is ,,Save in same location" When I go back to iPhoto to the same photo, iPhoto does not show any changes I have made in Camera Raw.
What could it be or should I set something in iPhoto or in Camera Raw?
Is there a chance in order to deal with this?
I will be grateful for any assistance and
    I'm waiting for advice
    Dawid

Any time a RAW file is edited in any 3rd party editor from within iPhoto it MUST be saved to the Desktop and imported as a new file. There's no other way to do it.  So the photos you've edited and saved are somewhere in the iPhoto Library folder system but cannot be recognized and used by iPhoto.
The following is geared for Photoshop and Photoshop Elements but might have some info relevant for you:
Using Photoshop CS3 or Photoshop Elements 9 as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's Advanced Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 9 the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
s  I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
NOTE: If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS/PSE without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in iPhoto".  That will let you either edit in iPhoto using the Edit button or Control-clicking on the thumbnail and selecting "Edit in iPhoto" or in PS/PSE by Control-clicking on the thumbnail and selecting "Edit in External Editor" in the Contextual menu.
This way you get the best of both worlds.

  • Just upgraded to IPHOTO 11, and am unable to enter edit my photo book.  Double clicking several times without any luck.  Any suggestions?

Difficulty editing photos in my photo book in IPHOTO 11.  Double-clicking and nothing happens...any suggestions?

Are you able to edit other photos in the library? Try this basic froubleshooting fix:  make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
If that doesn't help launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If it doesn't then your current library is damaged and needs to be repaired:  make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Exporting edited ('current') photos at maximum quality?

I currently use iPhoto 9.5.1 (on OSX 10.9.1) to organize my photos and I use an external editor (Photoshop) to edit them.
When I get an image that I want to then use for something I take it out from the iPhoto library. Previously I did this with a simple drag and drop, but that functionality mysteriously and suddenly ceased. Now I use export current. (I don't want the orignal verison that has none of the photoshop work)
From what I understand, exporting the current photo exports the version from the preview folder.
Is this a full quality version that is exactly what I created in photoshop and saved? Compared to the file in the masters folder would it be the same quality?
In other words is there any loss in quality along this path and if so where does it occur (or is this not the path)?
Camera-> masters folder-> iphoto library -> external editor -> previews folder -> iphoto library -> export of current
I don't care so much about metadata and primarily care about the quality of the exported edited image. I use them for other purposes where metadata is irrelevant (like parts of a design or printing).

    Thank you,
The question I have is in that tip you specifically mention that selecting 'current' as kind of export would export "the iPhoto Preview, a medium quality jpeg, it won't have all the metadata."
I did some tests with a tiff, png and jpeg file and found that this was not the case. The tif exported a tif, the png export a png and the jpeg export something closer to the original jpeg size (not anywhere near medium quality). Here are the results of the jpeg test:
The one discrepancy I notice is that there is a 200 byte difference between the version saved from the external editor and the version exported as current. That is minor, but I'm wondering where that may come from. Is it a result of saving the file with photoshop or is it something iPhoto does to the file?
The discrepancy seems to be greater (up to 29kb) with the png test:
And I think the discrepacny is likely from what the external editor does in saving the file and not what iPhoto does. Here are the results from my tiff test:
The inclusion of the color profile in the save from the external editor brings it closer to the size of modifed version.
So I find my concern that exporting 'current' would severely reduce the quality by always making a "medium quality jpeg" is not the case, and that it does export something very similar to the work I did in the external editor.
(I like using iPhoto for how it organizes with metadata. I just don't need the metadata for files/images that I export from iPhoto. They move on to a different purpose where such data is irrelevant. Also I'm curious if iPhoto is not meant to be used for organizing media what is it's primary purpose?)

Make sure your Flash plugin is up to date. If it is and the problems are still there, you may be having a problem with some extension or plugin that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons, except Flash (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?

Are you sure the Bookmarks you important are nowhere to be found? They should be stored in your bookmark manager, somewhere. To access the bookmark manager, go into ''Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks...''. Try searching there.
You can change their place from there too.

  • IPhoto '09: Exporting Edits changes photo to 72dpi

*How do I export photos I have edited in iPhoto '09 at the full 300dpi?*
I have made edits to some of my photos in iPhoto '09. These edits look 'great' so I want to export these ready to take to my local photo printing company (on USB stick).
However, I find *iPhoto changes my photos from 300dpi to 72dpi* either during the edit process or upon export.
If I select File Export and 'Original' it exports at 300dpi but without edits (understandable given non-destructive editing).
If I select File Export and 'Current' it exports the relevant edits but at only 72dpi.
If I select File Export and 'JPEG' - then Maximum Quality and Full Size - it exports at 72dpi.
I want to print these photos at large sizes and 72dpi is unacceptable. I need them at the 300dpi and want the edits to be included. What am I 'missing'??? I cannot see an answer through the forums and discussions to date...

Read the Myth of DPI - http://www.rideau-info.com/photos/mythdpi.html - and ignore it the DPI setting on the exported photos - it makes no difference - the important thing is the number of total pixels you have - not an artificial number like DPI

I'd like to know if there is a way to import the cell photos into iPhoto (by using an utility) ?

    Thanks

I haven't found any possible way of doing it, so I take it it is impossible...

Based on reading a LOT of problem reports, importing files from a DVD camcorder or other MPEG device, or Ripping DVD files rarely results in success in Premiere... do not be fooled by movie industry advertising into thinking that "DVD Quality Video" is suitable for EDITING... it is not... a DVD is designed to be for PLAYBACK only... and that includes trying to edit a Standard Def MPEG or VOB file!
You should also use WAV sound files, not the compressed MP3 format, To work with AC3 files in Premiere, it MAY work to copy the ad2ac3dec.dll file from the Encore DVD directory into the Premiere directory

There are other products better suited to your task... but if you only have DVD type files, you should convert to DV AVI... go to the VideoHelp link in my notes and look for a program to convert
The only SD (Standard Def) files that Premiere really likes are DV AVI type 2
