IPhoto 9.5.1 - Hangs on any movie file import - crashes -help!

Hey There Everyone!
I'm working in iphoto 9.5.1 and Mavericks and have been for weeks.  However, since my upgrade to Mavericks I've had no luck importing any movie file (.MOV,.mp4) into my library from either my iphone or my T2i Canon. Photos are fine. Videos are not.
I have browsed the boards here and have done the following:
HELD DOWN ALT/OPTION & created a new library.   IMPORT STILL HANGS AND CRASHES when trying to import videos
CREATED NEW USER and new library - IMPORT STILL HANGS & CRASHES
HAVE repaired permssions, then  deleted app, receipts and re-installed from APP store. Still crashes.
Photos import without any problem. If I have a mix, it imports the photos up until the video, then it's the spinning beach ball of death.
I get a "not responding" (even after an hour) and then I force quit. On re-opening I get: "A photo ahs been found in the iPhoto library that has not been imported. Would you like to import it? "   This is always the movie file and when I do this it hangs again. I end up saying no and it's put into a .recovered folder just outside my library.
All other functions seem to be working in Iphoto. Any help anyone has would be great!
Thanks!
Jon

Open the iPhoto Library as Terence Devlin as shown in this screenshot
and move the contents of the Auto Import folder
to a folder on the Desktop. Launch iPhoto and check to see if that message has gone away.  If it has you can try importing the files from the folder on the Desktop again.

    Help!
    Thanks, Mark

Unfortunately, the error message gives no details about what codec might be missing or what it needs.
If the file can't be opened in QT, it only means you cannot use the QT "Inspector" window to check what compression formats were used to create the file. It does not mean you can't use the Finder "Information" window to check on the compression formats or use a third party media information window (e.g., like VLC which will open many compression formats not supported natively by QT) to determine what kind of data is included in the MOV wrapper. If the file cannot be opened in any app, it is usually a good sign that the file itself is corrupted.
It's a stupid error message. Apple should do better than that.
Error trapping is quite extensive but there are still many areas which require human oversight. The message is telling you that either the container has a problem (e.g., not properly terminated, non-standard, or corrupted) or that one or more of the compression formats used is not supported by your current codec component configuration or that the data was encoded using non-standard settings or preferences not supported by QT or that the fourCC code does not match the data contained in the file or that there are timecode inconsistencies, etc., etc., etc. In short there are a near infinite number of possible problems for which it would be very difficult/nearly impossible to program error trapping depending on your sourcing of content and how you process it before it reaches the player app. Think of it like trying to play a BD disc in an DVD player.
I'll call Apple support when I get a chance.
Chances are good that they will end up sending you back here. In any case, it is often a good idea to post a sample file for examination by other QT users. At the very least, they should be able to tell you if the sample file will play on other systems which would indicate whether or not the file itself is bad and under the best of circumstances whould allow them to examing the file in detail for various common problems.

  • Just upgraded to Lion and can no longer import any .mov files ("file not supported") to 3.1.3.  Also can no longer view any .mov or .mp4 files already in library.

Have been using Aperture 3.1.3 with no problems.  Importing from a Nikon D80 (RAW & JPEG), Casio (.MOV) and Flip (.mp4).  Could import and view all videos without issue prior to Lion upgrade.  After Lion installation, can no longer import .mov files (get "file not supported" error) or even view any .mov or .mp4 files currently in library (even though thumbnail is present).  Can watch the .mov files directly on my camera using Quicktime in Finder but can't even drag & drop that file into Aperture.  Anybody else having similar problems?

Still no resolution and Geniuses at store could not assist.  Unfortunately, it looks like not all the applications were ready to support the Lion operating system.  We could not import any .mov files, could no longer view any .mov files already in my Aperture library and could not email any .mov files.  Totally frustrated.  Use Aperture almost daily and can't lose the video functionality.  Was also running dog-slow.  Constantly looking at the spinning wheel.  Geniuses suggested that I wipe out hard drive and reinstall Snow Leopard.  Had full backup on external drive with Time Machine.
Not an easy process though...had to reinstall several times (at 5 hours each time) because I continued to have issues.  Finally figured out that I needed to delete every backup file from Time Machine on external drive from the date I installed Lion because some of the hidden files were still migrating back to Snow Leopard.
    I had to:
    1. Delete all time machine backup files from date/time of Lion installation forward
    2. Do "clean" installation of Snow Leopard (wiped hard drive using disk utility and booted with Snow Leopard disc)
    3. Chose option to reinstall from backup off Time Machine which eventually got me back to Snow Leopard desktop
    4. Deleted Aperture program and reinstalled (I had to install Aperture 2 and then install Aperture 3 upgrade.
    5. Reinstalled iLife apps
    5. Applied all Apple updates available (again this took a few hours because there were several updates from Snow Leopard's original release plus Aperture 3 and other application updates)
Still doing some tweaking on some of my other apps but got everything back to where I originally was.  Now plan to wait on a few version updates from Lion before reinstalling.
I am one of Apple's biggest fans, but was very disappointed in the fact that I lost functionality in one of their own pieces of software (which I use the most!)  by installing Lion.

I am having problems using mov files imported into a project. I get the message "Not rendered" in the Canvas and clip won't play. Can anyone help?

When clips won't play without rendering in the Timeline, it usually means that the clip's specs don't match the Sequence settings.
A .mov file could be made from any number of codecs; the QuickTime Movie designation is merely a container for video files of all kinds.  Since FCE only works with the QuickTime DV codec and the Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) natively, if your mov files aren't one of those two, you need to convert them PRIOR to importing into your FCE project.

  • Only certain .mov files imported from iphoto into imovie

I've been a MacBook owner for one week. When I first transferred over my photos into iPhoto, most of the .mov movie files were imported into iMovie. The problem is that the remaining movie files still in iPhoto were taken with the same digital camera and are .mov files, but I can't get them to import into iMovie!?!? There are about 5 movies still hanging out in iPhoto that I desperately want to get into iMovie...can anybody offer me any advice?
    Thanks for your time.

MOV file are containers. If the compression formats contained in the the MOV are not "edit" compatible, iMovie '08 will not import them. Some digital cameras use different compression formats for different video clip modes. Your best approach at this point is to open the files that will not import to iMovie '08 in the QT Player and check their audio and video compression formats in the "Inspector" window. (And if you compare them with the files that did import, you may get an idea as to what the specific problem may be.) For instance, an MPEG4/AAC file would normally import (as long as the MOV container does not contain a "Tween" track) while an MPEG4/µ-Law 2:1 file will not because the µ-Law audio is not editable.

  • Iphoto 6.0.5 - keeps searching for .mov file that has been deleted

    OK, this is my problem...
I am running the most recent version of iphoto. i keep all of my photos in the iphoto library, which i run off of an external drive. recently, my drive filled up so i got a new 120gb firelite drive and transferred my photos AND the iphoto library to the new drive. then i started iphoto and was given the choice to create a new library or locate the library. i chose 'locate' and pointed it in the right direction. iphoto opened, and all my photos everything appeared to be ok in the program. this is when my problems began...
problem 1: if i try to do anything with any of the photos, i am told that the file cannot be located. i tried to re-import the library but the program began complaining about not being able to locate several movie files (that are in the library and on the external drive). then iphoto stopped responding.
problem 2: i then did a force quit, and now EVERY time i try to do ANYTHING (with other programs) while iphoto is open, it begins to look for the same movie file each time. then iphoto stops responding. i've since deleted the movie from my drive and from the iphoto library, but iphoto keeps looking for it each time.
please help!!!! my sanity rests on your ability to help me out....

    1. Try rebuilding the Library: Restart the iPhoto while holding down the Apple and Option keys. The resulting dialogue will give you the options.
    2. Apart from moving the Libary, have you changed anything within the iPhoto Library Folder?

  • Trouble exporting any mov files into H264 after adding K-Lite codec pack into Windows XP SP3.

I have QuickTime 7.7 (1680.34) installed. I have used it extensively and exported the video separate from the audio and extracted and used filters and it has all worked great with all of the other codecs I have had installed. It even worked great after I recently installed this K-Lite codec pack that actually saved files in a *.hdmov file type and I was able to view them with the Media Player Classic .... (I have Windows XP update 3)  and see what I could do over there and then go back to saving them as *.mov file types and work in QuickTime Pro. And still export them relatively fast to their latest H264 format.
I gave more file types to the Media Player Classic. I think along the line of the just the *.3g2 and *.mp4 and took them away from QuickTime but still keeping the *.mov, *.qt and *.mqv  file types .... and that is when I think everything must have changed.  all of a sudden I can not save any *.hdmov files and the export process in QuickTime takes longer than forever.
I thought that I had reconfigured Media Player Classic back to its default ....
and it should all go back to being how it was.
Is there some Direct Show filter or codec that upsets QuickTime Pro ... that I might have not reset back to what it was?
Any codec help would be much appreciated.
This is what the K-Lite site says in one instance about H264:
If the video that you are playing contains H.264 video, then you could try using another decoder. The codec pack by default uses ffdshow for decoding H.264 video. This is a free and open-source decoder. Other decoders exist that have better performance as ffdshow. They should give you smoother playback, specially if you have a dual-core or quad-core processor.
    Alternative H.264 decoders are:
CoreAVC. This decoder is unfortunately not available for free.
DivX H.264 decoder. This decoder is available for free as part of the DivX Bundle. Tip: disable everything in the bundle except the H.264 decoder.
ffmpeg-mt. This is an experimental multi-threaded version of the libavcodec decoding library, which is used by ffdshow. You can select ffmpeg-mt as decoder in ffdshow video decoder configuration.
MPC DXVA H.264 decoder. This is an internal decoder of Media Player Classic Homecinema. It uses your graphics card to perform most of the decoding process, resulting is a very low CPU usage. You can enable this decoder though: MPC Options -> Internal Filters. Note: this decoder has some specific requirements.
I downloaded the DivX bundle and will pull out that codec. I bought the CoreAVC for $13 but Norton said it was a risky file when I downloaded it ... (I have a question into the site about that) and I will try the ffmpeg-mt codec as well as see what they say about the last one. I will also try to undo everything I did that happened I guess before QuickTime started to export so slow that it is not even worth it to try and convert a mov file into H264.
Sorry so long ... I just was trying to lay out the things I have attempted, will attempt to try and improve the situation.
Thanks again very much if anyone makes it thru this ... geez .. sorry.

    Hello Tim,
I decided to do a clean install, a fresh new installation of windows and all its updates, I didn't get the option of
    install SP1 yet.
After that I only installed Catalyst drivers: 11.5 and Realtek HD audio drivers, all downloaded on May 24 2011.
Then latest FFDShow and MPC-HC to test, both x64 versions Nothing else installed.
Only a fresh copy of windows with its updates and those mentioned drivers.
To my surprise, it happened a gain.
It still crashes after a while when playing MKV videos.
It's weird, because it doesn't happen with avi's or mp4's.
So, there must be something wrong with one of windows updates that creates this windows FREEZE.
Also there is no possibility to find out what error it is in "Event Viewer" as nothing gets recorded there. Anyone could
    advise?
    Thanks

  • QuickTime new install hangs, freezes executing MOV files?

    Once worked?
A iTunes user I have removed & reinstalled ITunes back having same issue never fixed awhile (I did not know it was I QuickTime thing)
I tried to run any video in iTunes or podcast and it freezed.. I lost mouse keybd everything Reboot!
That was iTunes on another ticket suggested that I remove & reinstalled... same problem, never did solve it?
Today I tried QT, running a MOV from fresh boot, to execute a MOV file, one that worked and I created a year ago..
I went repair soft and apps in control panel, then finally remove & reloaded it, Quicktime still freezes when executing a MOV file.

1] Try it with another user account (make one if you need to in Apple menu > System Preferences > Accounts)
2] If its only happening in your account:
Inside your hard drive, in the Users folder should be your user home folder (with your account name.) Within that folder is a folder called Library... open that and look for a QuickTime folder within, pull that QuickTime folder out to the Desktop. Do the same for Internet Plug-ins and throw away the ~/Library/Caches/QuickTime folder too. Then, open Preferences and pull out com.apple.quicktime... (all of them) and the QuickTime Preferences file.
Then log out (Apple menu) and back in (or restart) and try again.
3] If its happening for all users then try:
Pull the /Library/Preferences/com.apple.quicktime.plist to the desktop (Your QuickTime Pro registration is in that file so don't throw it away, just move it out, restart and try again.)
4] If there are still problems, try repairing your disk either with the OS X install disc (run Disk Utility from the menu bar) or by rebooting in Singel-User-Mode and running fsck. Then repair permissions with Disk Utility.
Let us know if you still have trouble.

  • Trouble Importing ANY movie files

Everytime I go to import a mov. file, I get this error message that I've attached.
Using cs4 and never had this problem before yesterday.
I know this isn't much info, but can anyone SIMPLY DEFINE the nature of this message and why it would tell me that?
    Thanks you so much!

Yes, this article was very helpful. I want to try and erase the xmp files associated with the project....but after doing a search of my system cannot see or find any XMP files associated with this project. I even tried starting a new project and importing in all the assets, but I get errors doing that as well.
I guess I need to learn about XMP files!
Thanks for your caring help, I know some of this stuff baffles even the most seasoned vets...lol.
I have included a screen shot if anyone else wants to take a gander.

  • Importing movie files. Please help!

    Hi all,
So far this discussion board has been my saviour as am new to all this ipod business. Hopefully someone can answer this question too...
I have some movie files on my computer but they are AVI files. When I try to import them into itunes (by selecting add file to library) nothing happens at all. Do I have to convert the files to another type? If so, what's the best way to do this? I found a website which said I should convert them to mov files using a program called SUPER. Is this correct? Cause I tried this already and it took hours just to do one standard film.
I would be so grateful if someone could help me out on this one. It's driving me crazy! Thanks in advance

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. During the installation process there will be a Customize button (usually at the lower left corner) that will let you select individual elements to install.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • New to  Premiere, .mov file import issues

I am new to Premiere Elements 10, My mom had it installed on her new computer. I am trying to edit videos but I am running into some problems with .mov files. I have searched the forums and not been able to find an answer that really helps so I am going to put all my info here and hope someone out there can help. I am not the most tech saavy person out there, so it may need to be "dumbed down" a bit for me to understand.
I have a Kodak Easy Share c160, and I am using an HP Envy17 running Win.7 Premium. My mom bought Photoshop Premiere Elements, back when she fist purchased her computer. I try and import my videos into PE10 and I get "generic problem" as a result I have checked out the "suppored file type" in the help section of premier and it says it supports .mov files. I have looked for updates on the adobe website and havent found any. What am I doing wrong?
. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    ATR,
I most often encounter such, when a spammer has added a Reply. One "trick," that they use is to find old threads, and then add a Reply with their spam URL to it.
Often, most of us will never see that Reply, as a MOD will have seen it, and Deleted it, or, and more often, an Administrator will have closed a spammer's account, Deleting all of their spam posts - poof! gone before we know it.
Now, when there IS a post (even if it is almost immediately Deleted), the Jive software will show an (Updated) notice to the thread, but there will be nothing new showing.
I have also observed a few of these retain that (Updated) flag, even after I have viewed the thread. It is not until someone has actually posted to it, that the flag is permanently removed.
We do not see much spam in the PrE Forum, but in forums, such as The Lounge, it is very common for them to be hit by spammers. Also, long weekends (in the US) are prime spam times, as most Administrators are not in their office, other traffic is slower, and even MOD's might have taken the days off. The spammers assume that their endeavors will be up for at least three days, before being removed. However, John C., Adobe-Admin, usually works from home in Seattle, and zaps the spam very, very quickly.
Now, this is just speculation, since the post is gone, but as it is a common occurance, I think that I will be correct here.

  • Trouble with video playback on .mov files. Please help!

I have some .mov files that were transferred onto a USB and they're not working properly. The audio during playback works fine but the screen remains black for the entire video. There are 45 videos and all have the same issue. Already tried them on QuickTime (latest version), Windows Media Player, Divx, Movie Maker and Powerdirector. Nothing seems to be working. Tried downloading a couple of Codecs as well.
It's probably something really silly but I'm out of ideas. Anyone?

    Hi Bazookajoe117,
As already suggested by Jacumba your symptoms point to a lack of required codec in your system.
Take a look at below post to find out the commonly used codecs in QT that would allow you to play the files without any issue.

  • Only some .MOV files import?

    Hi everyone,
I'm having a bit of trouble. I have installed Quicktime to get the .MOV files to import - and it reads them, but only SOME of them. Which is weird. There are 24 .MOV files in total - and 9 of them are showing as audio files only.
    Any ideas?
I have cleaned my temporary folders. Closed and re-opened the project. Started a new project. Moved the .MOV files to different locations. Uninstalled then reinstalled Quicktime and the same thing each time?
It's always the same files that show up as audio only. Really weird.
    Can anyone advise please?
    Best wishes,
