IPhoto 9.5 extremely slow

Hey there,
I use my iPhoto with the iPhoto Library file on an external HDD (Mac OS Journaled). During a whole year there wasn't any problem with iPhoto. But now when I open iPhoto, the spinning beachball appears and nothing happens.
After seeing my log files, a friend of mine told me to put the external HDD to "Privacy" tab in Spotloght settings, because the Spotlight wants to use my picture files, and does not let iPhoto use them.
After this - and doing all the things that appears after pressing Option + Command when opening iPhoto -, now I can open iPhoto actually, but it's so slow that it's absloutely useless. Just the spinning ball after every click.
Unfortunately I haven't got any backups of my photos, so I don't want to loose them.
Please let me know if you have ena ideas what is the origin of the problem, and how solve it.
Please ask if any more detailed info is neeed.
(Using Mavericks 10.9 and iPhoto 9.5.1, bought from Mac App Store, updated just right now.)
Thanks a lot, Marton

Do yo have a labtop that you disconnect the EHD prequently? That could trigger a reindex of the EHD (although it shouldn't).
Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
    Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache folder(s):
Home/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto
and, if there is one, the
Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: For Mavericks, 10.9,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
where you can check the Show Library Folder checkbox.

  • IPhoto 9.5.1 and Mavericks extremely slow and hangs

I upgraded to Mavericks and bought iPhoto 9.5.1 upgrade from the app store. Now, iPhoto is extremely slow in loading thumbnails. Once it loads a page or two, then it is fast to scroll the thumbnails it has already loaded, but as you go further back in time, it needs to load all the thumbnails. It eventually hangs. When I reboot the application, it doesn't remember the previous thumbnails and is again extremely slow. This version is way to slow to use and is actually unusable. It also doesn't show any faces in the face collection frames, and when you click on them, it opens up blank outlines, then when you click on these, it brings up the original photo with all the faces named. So the faces feature has major issues as well.
I never had any problem with the previous version of iPhoto. I am using a mid-2010 macbook pro with 8 g of ram. Anyone else have this problem and is Apple aware of the problems with this version?
    Thanks.

Where is your iPhoto Library stored? Have you tried rebuilding the Library?

  • IPhoto is extremely slow after upgrading to OSX Maveric

Has anyone noticed that iPhoto is extremely slow after upgrading to OSX Maverick

    I've noticed that it isn't.
There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 8 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • IPhoto running extremely slow

I am a new Mac user, bought my first Mac computer, with Tiger and iLife installed. PowerBook 17" G4 100GB HD and 1GB ram. Everything is running good except iPhoto. Every time if I do anything related to iPhoto the computer become extremely slow. I have to wait around 1 to 3 minutes after each action. I want to know if there is any solution to it. Is it hardware problem or iPhoto problem? Or simply just because iPhoto couldn't handle large amount of photos... because I do using iPhoto to manage over 11000 of my photos about 40 GB space...

    Hi FAcundo,
    Basically the info is here:
I have a 3,000 image library at 3 gigs in size.
I use a Canon camera which does not make larger Makernotes in the EXIF data.
If you want to find out more about the large Makernote problem, visit this site
    Apple Macintosh iPhoto 5 slowness
If you do have one of the cameras that have large Makernote files you may wnat to try (iPhoto) Exif Cleaner
-Will more memory help speed iPhoto up. It sure will and many have noted that it has.
-There are steps you can take to speed up scrolling in the iPhoto Library.
       do not use shadows
       do not use outlines
       use white for background
view by rolls and keep the rolls closed
when viewing images keep them around 5 or less across in the rows
choose not to "show photo count for albums"
If you have thousands of images it is also advisable to make multiple libraries. Smaller libraries will load and work faster. Use the Option key when launching iPhoto to create and switch between libraries.
You can also use iPhoto Library Manager or iPhoto Buddy to manage your libraries.
    iPhoto Library Manager
    iPhoto Library Manager documentation
this page will show you everything you can do with iPhoto Library Manager.
You can also try iPhoto Buddy
You should have a t 15% free space on your hard drive. Things get slow after that.
As an update...iPhoto 6 seems to have resolved this problem for those people who had the Makernote problem.

  • Time Capsule extremely slow recover

    Hi and tnxs for reading.
Since my iPhoto Library has been corrupted, I am trying to test some old versions/backup by restoring them from my Time Capsule (2TB last version on the Apple Store), but unfortunately the process is extremely slow. My iPhoto Library is 35GB and the required time for the transfer is about 5 days!!
I did some tests: no prob with the WiFi: if I try to manually transfer a 1GB file on WiFi in the finder from my Mac to the TC disk it takes a few minutes. However, the iPhoto Library recover from TC is taking ages... any idea??

The iphoto library is a huge number of small files.. not one big file.
Wireless is extremely inefficient at handling the data stream plus all the back and forth file info required .. please use ethernet.
Simply plug in ethernet.. make sure you have a connection then turn wireless off.. If it stops the file transfer I am very sorry. You will need to start over most likely.
IPv6 can also help but you need it set correctly to link local only .. auto is not good enough.

  • Extremely slow External Drive

I have just installed a USB 2.0 Lacie 1 TB external hard drive in the rear port of my Airport Extreme router, for the purpose of storing & sharing Photos, Music & video files on our network. All this was done on the advice from the apple guy.......when i open Iphoto it takes well over a full minute to see the photo library (that little pinwheel just keeps on spinning)...Does anyone know a solution to this extreme slowness?

Just writing to bump your question as I have a very similar question. I want to connect a HD to my Time Capsule for the same purpose as you and want it to be fast like you. I hope you get an answer.

  • Why is my MacBook Pro extremely slow

    Hi.
My MacBook Pro has recently began to run extremely slow. I have tried several clean up guides from you tube, but so far nothing has helped.
My battery is completely dead, so I only run with the charger connected.
I have done the etreecheck and here are the results:

  • Editing Quiz Extremely Slow in cp2

I am using an Intel core duo pc and trying to build a quiz to
follow a few slides containing flash animations and narration. I am
able to create the slide, however moving things around on the stage
is exceptionally slow, whereas the other slides are still editable
at a reasonable speed. Any suggestions on how to speed this up?
    Thanks
    tt

Thank you for your suggestion. I will keep that information for future reference.
Later, as I worked with other photos in other albums, I found that iPhoto was working great in the other albums.
Then I remembered that the photos that set off the slow editing, I had done some minor editing in PhotoShop and then put them back into iPhoto. As I tried to crop these Photoshopped photos in iPhoto the extremely slow editing began. Technically, I don't know what happened, but they were incompatible.

Your startup disk has no free space!
    Smoke-A-Lot wrote:
Macintosh HD (disk0s2) /  [Startup]: 249.20 GB (3.71 GB free) (Low!)
You need to spend some time removing files you no longer need. I'd suggest you reboot & connect an external HD, then slowy start copying files off this Mac. You need to take care because the Mac can run out of memory & put you into a 'must reboot now' situation, don't forget to delete files once they are copied off the system. Reboot to keep the memory usage to a minimum.
You need at least 20GB free at all times to allow the Mac some breathing room for temporary files & virtual memory storage. More free space is better, especially on spinning disks.
There are many tips on this site for removing old files & finding large files or folders
    http://pondini.org/OSX/DiskSpace.html (and search this site).
These two can also help to find large files & folders.
    http://grandperspectiv.sourceforge.net/
    http://whatsizemac.com/
See Király's post for a way to make these apps search all folders (by default it will be limited by your permissions).
drive space not adding up - deleted user?
Don't forget that certain apps have their own 'trash' so open iPhoto, iMovie or any other app that has it's own trash & check the built in trash is empty, otherwise the items in the trash will be taking up disk space.
I'd also consider removing any of the system modifications you do not use, like Blackberry's software, Citrix, Toast's extensions. Otherwise check that the installed versions are up to date & compatible with the OS. http://roaringapps.com can indicate if other users are happy with these apps on your OS.

  • Bloated iphoto library file causing slow performance

My iPhoto 6 library contains about 20,000 photos and the library6.iphoto file is 488MB. I find EVERYTHING about iPhoto seems extremely slow -- launching, editing and quitting. From what I've read, the library size is the key factor in iPhoto speed. (I've followed the other tips in this forum, such as viewing by rolls and turning off all but the current roll, turning off outline and shadow, viewing standard size thumbnails, etc. but it's still very slow.)
Does that library6.iphoto file size seem right for just 20,000 photos, or is there a problem there?
I only have about 55 albums and four slideshows. I rebuilt the database twice and it had no effect. I even rebuilt all the thumbnails, which also had no noticeable effect.
I should mention that most of my photos were taken with a Pentax Optio S4, which I understand used to have a problem with excess EXIF data in iPhoto. But I've also read that iPhoto 6 cleared up that problem, so I assume that's not causing my current grief.
    Can anybody help???

    Tim:
I can't say for sure about the database file as I don't have a library anywhere that size. It's the most important file of the library as it contains ALL of the photo, album, slideshow, keyword, editing, book, etc. information.
How much RAM and free space do you have? Do you have at least 10GB free space? To check out the EXIF issue (it shouldn't be one with iPhoto 6.0.4) you can create a test library and import about 500 files into it and check the database file's size. I have a library of 686 photos with a database file size of 1.4 MB. I don't have a lot of albums, slideshows, etc. about 4 total.
If all else fails you could try rebuilding the library with iPhoto Library Manager. It creates a new library and creates new database files and copies the files and thumbnails it needs to complete the library. You're original library will be untouched. iPLM often succeeds where the iPhoto method does not. Might be worth a try. Here's how:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: It may take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos. One user reported that with a library of about 5,000 images it took about 2-3 hours so plan ahead. In your case you might want to plan a weekend trip while it's working away.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • My mac desktop 09 is running extremely slow

my Mac is running extremely slow could it be iphoto causing it?  its at 70GB

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
    Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the system log for messages that may indicate a hardware fault. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator. I've tested them only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|nspace-h|n Cause: -' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
    Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • TimeMachine extremly slow

The Time Machine has become extremly slow. The space used on my internal HD is 1.5 TB. The external disc has a capacity of 3TB, and TM says that there is not enough space! So I bought a 4TB external HD (connected with USB2). After 3 long days it became even slower and the amount of backup data increased more and more: At the start of the new backup it was for example "65 GB of 1.5TB", then after two days "1.45TB of 1.5TB", then "1.6TB of 1.8TB", ending after about 3 days with 2.33TB of needed backup space for a original internal disc of 1.5TB data.  My "old" external HD of 3TB should be sufficient but TM refuses it even after having deleted automatically all the old backups exept the latest.
    What is going wrong here?
    Thanks for any hints!

    Hi Linc!
I selected the console lines from the beginning of the new backup. This backup was made on a new formatted empty external HD, the TM fully resetted. After TM reset, the backup was significantly faster ("normal"), but the last 200 GB of the backup became very slow, and the originally 1.52 TB backup size became larger and larger...

  • IMac EXTREMELY slow after 10.4.10 software update

    Hi All,
I'm having major performance issues with my iMac G5. I ran the 10.4.10 updater via Software Update but after installing, my computer got "stuck" shutting down. After about 25 minutes I had to shut it down via the power button in the back.
Since then it's been running EXTREMELY slow. We're talking about 5 minutes for it to open Safari. I read previous discussion threads and tried downloading the 10.4.10 combo updater, but I receive an error trying to open it after download saying there are "no mountable files."
    Can anyone help?

    Hi Miriam and Barry,
Thank you very much for the quick responses!
I tried downloading the combo updater for both 10.4.10 and 10.4.9 again but when it tries to mount the drive it gives me the same error message for both that says "No mountable file systems."
It looks like the archive and install option may be my next step then yes?
    A few questions about this.
    - I read the article included in the link. Just to confirm, I purchased a copy of Tiger - I can use that to do this yes? My computer originally came with original OS X.
    - Also, will it archive all of my documents and files (i.e. iTunes music and videos, iPhoto pictures, personal docs, etc?) Or will I need to back them all up to an external drive and then import them after the Archive and Install?
    - After I complete the Archive and Install and get everything up and running, do I delete the /Previous Systems/Previous System 1 folder? Or do I need to keep that on there?
Let me know your thoughts and thanks again!
    Chris

  • Blackberry desktop for Mac and Bold 9900 - extremely slow syncing?

Is it just me or does it take forever just to sync a few changes to photos or music to my Bold 9900 using the Blackberry desktop on mac?   Ok granted the first time I added over 1000 songs, several playlists and about 40 photos from iPhoto via the sync software, it took over 3 hrs to sync.  Personally I find that extremely slow, especially when comparing to my ipad or iphone and itunes syncing.   Today I wanted just to remove one photo album from my phone, so unticked it and resynced again.   Over half an hour before it finished!  The registering media with device step takes a very long time, as does the initial preparation stage......  surely there must be something wrong?
Without the wifi sync feature i can't imagine it being practical just to add one song to my phone through this software before popping out with the phone in the car.... I would need to give myself over 30 minutes in advance.
Any advice or help most appreciated.

    Hey midinotes,
Welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums.
It can take quite awhile to synchronize media to your BlackBerry.  Especially with the songs, 1000 songs it is normal to take a few hours.
The easiest way I add music to my BlackBerry is dragging the media files to the media card.  It's a lot quicker.

  • Extremely slow file transfer from wifi server to MacBook Pro

I am experiencing extremely slow file download speeds from my wifi server to my MacBook Pro. I have just carried out a test - transferring a 16.5Mb folder took 8 mins, 24 secs. Transferring the same folder to my iMac G5 takes less than 3 seconds. Also, copying the same folder from my MacBook Pro to my wifi server only takes 22 seconds. Any suggestions PLEASE!!!!!

Try getting it on the Mac using something other than iPhoto.
In Windows, it would simply be a matter of opening Explorer and copying the file(s).  I'm fairly certain that Mac has a similar feature, but I'm not familiar with Macs.
Not really an iPhone issue... more of an issue with the application being used to import the file.
