IPhoto 9.6 all events gone

Technical details:
OS X Yosemite ver. 10.10
iPhoto 9.6
iMac (27" , late 2009) 2,666 Ghz Intel Core i5 4Gb ram 1067 Mhz DDR3
Problem:
After upgrading to Yosemite and iPhoto 9.6, the first time I opened iPhoto it started to update the library,  when it finished  there were only 4 Events,  it should have been hundreds, as there´re more than 15 thousands photos.
Then I follow the Library First Aid and rebuild the library but nothing happened.
I'm not using iCloud, no external drive for iPhoto library

No back up then?
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Iphoto recent upgrade - all Events gone. Photos there, sorted only by date. No events

Since the recent upgrade, the new iPhoto has eliminated all Events. The photos are there (I think they all are, but not sure) but there are no events, the photos are all just sorted by date (no titles/events). I had just finished organizing all Events days before the upgrade.
    Not happy with this upgrade.

    KEY WORDS: "until it's resolved"
Rest assured, the new Photos lack of ability to automatically add new photos as "Events" will be resolved in much the same way that many unwanted, unneeded, and for some users, workflow-crippling changes to Apple operating systems and related software are ever resolved:
    1. Apple will do nothing. If few people complain through the proper channels via Feedback, the product will remain as is, and users will either eventually adapt to the new organizing schemes, or will find and use another product that better fit our ways of thinking, manipulating, and organizing our digital images, all shaped by our existing libraries of images that were in iPhoto.
    -OR-
    2. If enough authentic and specific complaints (in the low millions, at least) are sent promptly and directly to Apple via Feedback, and if the complaints are precise and persistent, and continue relentlessly over a period of years, then some similar capability MIGHT be added later, in some future update, in a couple of years.  (Think OS X 10.13.1, "Ellis Island" or whatever geographic icon that future iteration might be named after. "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to import their digital images directly into "Events" once again…)
(There are of course many other possible scenarios, none of which involve returning iPhoto to the marketplace, nor "fixing" Photos to be like iPhoto was.)
    Not complaining*, simply explaining.
*Because registering outrage and frustration by complaining here in Apple Support Communities does absolutely nothing to ever resolve any issue with Apple. This is a only a user community that Apple allows to exist at it's pleasure. Apple does not officially monitor or ever officially respond to feedback here, and the moderators do not tolerate rants.

  • Upgraded to iPhoto '11 and all photos gone!

Upgraded to iPhoto '11 this evening from iPhoto '09 and all my photos were showing up as blanks. All my events were there and the photo outlines with the correct meta data were all there. But the photos themselves were all blank with a triangle with exclamation point in them.
The Photo Library still showed 44GB in size so I knew it was all there somewhere but nothing was rendering. Tried holding down option/command and rebuilding but that didn't help.
I finally opened up Terminal and went into the photo library and found something that was definitely not right. First the Originals directory now seemed to be a symlink to a new Masters directory and that directory was empty! I also saw a bunch of new "Old ..." directories in there for example "Old Masters". And guess what, inside the Old Masters directory were all my photos!
So I moved all those directories inside Old Masters into Masters and started iPhoto again. All my photos are still blank but if I actually double click on a picture to look at it, it shows up this time instead of the triangle with ! point in it.
I've now restarted iPhoto with option/command and am waiting for the thumbnails to rebuild. It's now taking much longer to rebuild (compared to the first time I tried the trick) and it still has not finished the rebuild process. I'm hoping once this is complete that I'll be back in business.
Looks like Apple was doing some cleaning as part of the upgrade and for some reason, it did not finish it properly. We'll see if I'm back after this rebuild.

Note, here's the sequence of events in my case:
    1. Bought new iMac from Apple store
    2. Copied iphoto library onto external HFS+ sata disk (~44GB in size) from my old mac's internal disk
    3. Copied iphoto library from external HFS+ sata disk onto iMac internal disk
    4. Ran iPhoto on iMac and it did some upgrading, etc and then came up just fine
    5. Read up on the features for iPhoto '11 on Apple's website and discovered I didn't have some of the new features
    6. Discovered in About iPhoto menu that I was actually running iPhoto '09 which was the default installed on my brand new iMac
    7. Found that iPhoto '11 was on a DVD that came with my iMac but not pre-installed
    8. Used the DVD to upgrade to iLife '11 (iPhoto '11)
    9. Launched iPhoto but it did not launch saying I must run an upgrade first using Software Update
    10. Launched Software Update and it found iPhoto v9.1.
    11. Upgraded to it.
    12. Re-launched iPhoto.
    13. Started upgrading my photo library
    14. Took a long time but finally finished
    15. Library came up but with blank thumbnails and blank pictures with a ! triangle in them if you open the photo; but all meta data is correct
    16. Ran Get Info on iPhoto Library and saw that it was still the right size (~44GB)
    17. Used Terminal to go into the iPhoto Library and saw there was an Old Masters directory which contained all my photos still (hopefully)
At this point tried reading all sorts of forum posts and blogs and found nothing that worked. All pointed to upgrading to 9.0.1 and unfortunately I'm already on 9.1 as part of the software update above. Tried rebuilding, repairing, everything. Nothing works. Eventually copied out the Old Masters into my home directory and created a brand new iPhoto Library and imported everything back in. Just hoping I did not lose any of my photos but I definitely lost all the events and books (obviously).
I have some backups but they are a few months old unfortunately. And I did not even think to back up before upgrading to iPhoto '11 since I have never had an issue with an Apple iPhoto upgrade in the past. Sigh

  • ICal ALL Events Gone PLEASE HELP

Hello... Need urgent help! One afternoon I was finishing up work and closed everything as normal... in the morning, ALL the events on iCal were gone... just disappeared. I have a blackberry 8350i and figured there was a mishap between the two so I brought a 12" I also have only to find out that all the events there were gone too; and I never sync the BB with the 12". Both PB's were synched with my iPhone without any problems ever. Does anyone know what's going on? Thanks in advanced.

    Hey Ferd,
So you think there is something corrupted in the BB that made the iCal erase the whole 09? One thing is for sure, the data in the BB is intact. All events there seem to be fine and yet it won´t sync with iCal (I use PocketMac because when this BB came out there was no other option to sync with mac). In fact, I've been trying to sync with a PC but I haven't had the time to seat down to spend a whole afternoon trying to figure out Win Vista... so far "I think" I managed to backup the calendar and contacts but not really sure. Still trying to find an app to sync with... maybe that way I can make a backup to use with iCal. Do you know of any other way to sync the BB with another app in either mac or pc to do this???
I have a time machine backup from june 29th which I used this morning. I boot from the Leopard dvd and restore from that date but didn´t remember that the applications were on the exception list. One thing, though, when the restore was finished, iCal displayed the reminder window with a bunch of the events... but since I had no apps i couldn´t say if everything was there. My intention, now that I think of it, is to go back to that backup, find the iCal software somewhere and install it to see what´s in there. If there´s everything, needless to say I´ll just make a backup, save it and restore again to the latest.
I was trying to restore from .ics files but just realize they have to be .icbu... hence the gray.
Right now I'm downloading the Combo Update to see how it goes.

  • IPhoto 9.3 - all EVENTS out of order, random key photos, some empty.

Since iPhoto 9.3 update, all Events folders at top of Source List are showing correctly as thumbnails - correct order (manual), key photos - no probs. But they're also further down the S'List, under another EVENTS, this time out of order. When I go to full screen view to access ALBUMS thumbnails, the Events are above them, looking like Albums (stack of white framed photos), in random order, with random key photos, and some are empty. Also, on this view only, scrolling is not working properly.

I have had the same problem... not to mention I made it worse trying to reset my manual settings for iphoto!!!!
Now all of my stuff on my comupter is out of order!! : ( It will take me months to fix this. I often use iphoto on my ipad for work and it looks like that is not going to happen now!
I am very unhappy about this apple people!

  • Updated iPhoto '08 and library no longer found, all events gone

I just updated iphoto '08 via update manager. Now it can't find my library. When I navigate to the folder of photos, it refuses to accept it, and when I do an import, I lose all my events and get a mass of 12,000 photos completely unorganized? Why does Apple do this? Its an incremental update - if its going to corrupt your library why not some warning.

    Gregory
if its going to corrupt your library why not some warning.
If they thought it would corrupt your library then they'd hardly have released it now would they?
Of course before any update, you backed up right?
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums back.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
    Regards
    TD

  • ICal 3.0.6: all events gone, cannot add new events either, needs force quit

    Hello,
I am experiencing the same behaviour seen by others on the list. It probably occured due to the OSX upgrade to 10.5.6. I hadn't used iCal much since Dec 10 or so and only noticed the anomalous behaviour yesterday.
    What I see:
    - iCal comes up but all previous events are no longer in it
    - The default Home and Work calendars are also gone
    - The left bottom section of iCal shows January 2001 and the forward/back buttons do not work in the this subwindow
    - I cannot add any new events
    - I can only close iCal by using force quit
My events and calendars files are still available in the ~\Library\Calendars folder but I cannot import them into iCal. File->Import->Import an iCal file does not work (a finder like window does not appear to allow me to choose a file).
    I have tried the following:
    - moving com.apple.iCal.plist to the desktop and login/logout
    - moving Calendar Cache to the desktop and login/logout
    - login using another account and tried to use iCal. no go.
I haven't tried to install an older version of iCal from the OSX DVD yet.
    Any ideas?

I am having the same behavior. In the past with many major OSX upgrades this has happened and I had to get a previous copy from Time Machine. Right now my Time Machine copy is dead and I can't do it. I tried getting an older copy of iCal but it is exhibiting the same behavior!! I can't synch the calendar with my iPhone, either! No, I do not want to reinstall Leopard from scratch on this machine just to replace iCal - that is ABSURD!! This is the 3rd or 4th time this has happened. I don't have 4 - 6 hours of my time to fix this kind of problem every couple of months - not to mention several spare hard drives, etc.
What is causing this problem, and how can we get iCal back??
How about a simple iCal reinstall utility page on the Apple Web site if this is going to keep happening??

  • Iphoto 9.6 .. All events lost

    Well.
It seems after upgrading to Yosemite and upgrading iPhoto to 9.6 all my events are gone and the only one left is the "New Event" from today which contains 177.031 pictures.
Another "New Event" contains 15.054 pictures.
Started the new 9.6 iPhoto, accepted the library conversion .. and now back home I see that huge mess.
Not only are all events gone (except for two, over a thousand Events went "poof")
    All faces are gone too.
The Library package shows the structure under "Old Masters" .. but it seems all Folders do not contain files according to the Finder.
All pictures are new in one big heap in the "Masters > 2014 > 10 > 29 / 30" folder.
I have a recent backup of the folder .. but is is in the old format (before Yosemite) and very likely the new iPhoto will again make a mess out of it.
I will start a new library and import the folders from the backup by hand so the structure aka. events is back.
And as always. Backup Backup Backup .. everything you consider important at least twice.
Still, any idea on how to restore the faces ?

    Hi
I updated from the latest version to Yosemite and than downloaded the iPhoto update.
The last version had some little lag now and than but was overall stable (one of the reasons i upgraded to a new iMac from my old 27" iMac)
I used iPhoto for  daily use and Aperture for more advanced stuff (rarely)
No account sharing (i am single user on all my machines without Admin rights for safety)  and the library is on an external hard drive and has been there for years.
I actually have three libraries (old archive, private, work) with the private one being the biggest.
All 3 libraries are existing since the iApps came with a Mac (2004 ??) and were converted to the new version multiple times, without issue than taking quite some time.
As I am afraid that iPhoto will make a mess of the the other 2 libraries too I am now copying the Master folders to another external hard drive.
I am now trying (doing some other work) to rebuild the Library again by dragging only single folders into iPhoto from the "Master" sources.
I also discovered 4 "Recovered photos" folders containing various pictures and (strangely) *.avi files which iPhoto does not want to import.
No idea what these are, will copy them to my windows machine and take a look, maybe some old digital camera made those as the oldest pictures in the library date back to 1994.

When I opened iphoto this morning all my photos since April 2013 are gone. My desktop picture is still current but I can't find my pictures.

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
iPhoto 8 (09) and earlier- run the options indicated
iPhoto 9 (11) and later- run  Option #4 to rebuild the database
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager (iPhoto 8 or earlier or IPhoto 11 and later) and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the
File ➙ Rebuild Library (iPhoto 8 or earlier)
    or
Library ➙ Rebuild Library (iPhoto 9 or later)
menu option to rebuild the library. Select the checkbox to include orphaned photos.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
