IPhoto 9 and TM restore problem

Had a hard drive "fail" in a Macbook (kids spilled cocoa pebbles on it while watching cartoons on youtube...). Time Machine on USB drive attached to Airport Extreme backing up. Put in new drive; started off DVD; told to restore. After it was done went to iPhoto; all picture thumbnails were there but when click on shows a black screen with an ! in it. Tried to rebuilt library, now only have 3 events that do the same black screen with ! when clicked on. Have not touched backup drive since started on this. The iPhoto library was 164 gigs before the drive died, had backed up right before it happened. Everything else appears fine, just iPhoto library. When look at iPhoto library shows only 3-4 gig size on any time machine date I pick. Any ideas?

Using TM, I have gone back day by day and tried to see what happens, no luck. Inside iPhoto using browse backups it shows just the three events; I will look again tonight to make sure not missing something. iPhoto has crashed a few times when in browse backups though.
Now, all I should have to do it open TM and browse backwards and select restore on the iPhoto file that I want to restore, correct?
We had like 85,000 photos and a number of short movies.
Have some of them on other computers, some on older (smaller) drives, but there are some that were only on that hard drive and I just hate the thought of losing them. Was just sure TM would take care of it.

  • Iphoto 11 and Snow Leopard - problems

With iphoto 11 and Snow Leopard, I now have a complete mess. Most of my photos and events are totally mixed up, out of any recognizable order.

Make sure iPhoto is fully up to date (version 9.1.3), Load your iPhoto library backup and convert your library again
Or provide a lot more information than "my library is a mess" - maybe there is some assistance that someone can give you if they know more

    Welcome to the discussions,
if you connect your ipod to itunes and look at the colored info bar at the bottom of the window, does it show different colors or just one orange "other" part? As you got errors while syncing, there might be corrupt data files on your ipod filling it up. Try to restore again to get rid of the great orange part. After that the "other" section should be reduced to max. of 500MB or less.

  • Supervisor password and windows restoring problem

    hello everyone ,
I bought my toshiba satellite L755 5 months ago but the windows just crashed down and when I try restoring the windows factory setting by holding the 0 button while turning on the laptop it requires a supervisor password which I didn't set !
please help me what should I do ?!

    Hi Alex,
    any chance that the password (WPA or WPA2 I assume) contains special keys/characters like * / and/or also international ones like ä ü ö ß ?
These can be troublesome with using different operating systems.
Such characters can be coded differently on different operating systems like OSX or Windows so that the pass-phrase isn't compatible anymore.
Since the PSK is stored in the router, using such a PSK with different operating systems can lead to a scenario where you can connect to the router with OSX but not with Windows, for example.
I personally avoid such special characters and instead use the full length of the PSK and mix numbers and upper/lower characters.

  • Corrupt iPhoto library, need to restore

I loaded up iPhoto and some of my albums were showing blank thumbnails - the right number, but they were blank. And if I clicked on the thumbnail, the image opened but after closing it down the thumbnail was still incorrect. So I did cmd+opt when I opened it up and chose to rebuild - I checked the top 4 of the 6 available options. After leaving it for an hour and being told that 4164 versions had been restored, it still wasn't completing or even looking close to completing. So I closed it down, probably a mistake because when I loaded it up I had no events, no photos, or anything. The iPhoto library file was actually still the correct size (12GB app.) so my immediate reaction was to try to rebuild it again from that file. At this point, about 15 mins in, it looks like it is heading in the same direction. Which leads me to think that restoring from a Time Machine backup is probably the only option.
I've seen conflicting advice on how to restore from a backup and in some cases, it referred to older versions of iPhoto. I'm using the current, most up to date version so can anyone point me in the direction of the best way to do a restore.
    Thanks...

to restore a file or folder in TM launch TM and in the resulting widow go back in time to the point you wnat to restore from - select the item to restore (the iPhoto library) and click restore and let TM do its thing - it probably is a good idea to use the keep both option until you complete the process rather than overwrite the current library - you can simply drag the current library to the desktop prior to restoring too

Well I have been at this for 3 days trying to get Iphoto to load.  I have uninstalled, installed over and over again the ILife. Today I even downloaded Iphoto for 15 dollars from the App Store. I am running version 10.7.2 on my IMAC. Please please please can someone help get my Iphoto up and running.  Thanks!

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • IPhoto events and pictures missing from iPhoto after restoring new hard drive and upgrade to iLife11

My iPhoto events and pictures are ALL missing from my iPhoto Library after I tried restoring my programs on a new hard drive AND upgrading to iLife11!  Over the last few months, I upgraded my 2008 Macbook Pro's hard drive from a 250 GB to a 500 GB hard drive and since then have been manually installing and restoring programs and software.  I decided to do things manually because I had problems with doing Time Machine backups/restores in the past, so before I upgraded the drive, I manually saved everything to a Western Digital MyStudio 1 TB hard drive that I had just for the purposes of a second back up.  Anyway, I tried importing the pictures onto the new library, but couldn't find the hard copies at first, so that didn't work.  I then tried deleting the iPhoto Library that came with new operating system, then copying my old backup onto the new hard drive...that didn't work either.  However, when I right clicked on the iPhoto Library icon on my external hard drive (the original) and clicked on "show package contents," the folder not only contained the originals, but they were still organized by year and event just as I had them originally!
So, then I thought "why don't I try just importing the pictures directly into the new iPhoto Library!"
I tested it out, and sure enough, it worked!  I then tried importing an entire folder (which, was actually the name of the event), and again it worked!  So, I literally clicked and dragged my entire 2007-2009 library of pictures (which was about 35 GB) back into my iPhoto Library!  AND, this only took about 30 minutes to download, enough time for me to write this post and the following instructions to Recap:
              1. Open your new iPhoto Library
              2. Go to wherever your ORIGINAL iPhoto Library is saved/backed up, then Right-click (or Control click) on the iPhoto icon
              3. Click on "Show Package Contents"
              4. Go to the folder called "Originals" or "Master"
              5. Click and drag everything INSIDE the folder (not the folder itself) to your new iPhoto Library
              6. DO NOT try Importing from inside iPhoto!  For some reaseon, iPhoto can't see these images, but I promise, they're there!
I assume this could work on other iLife programs, but luckily I have MobileMe and my iCalendar updated itself, though I did have to do some tweeking...
Hope this helps other people out, GOOD LUCK!

I'm re-posting the answer to this problem so I can show it has been answered:
    Open your new iPhoto Library
Go to wherever your ORIGINAL iPhoto Library is saved/backed up, then Right-click (or Control click) on the iPhoto icon
    Click on "Show Package Contents"
Go to the folder called "Originals" or "Master"
Click and drag everything INSIDE the folder (not the folder itself) to your new iPhoto Library
DO NOT try Importing from inside iPhoto!  For some reason, iPhoto can't see these images, but I promise, they're there!
              GOOD LUCK!!!

  • Updated iPhoto 11 and cannot open Events with double click or any other way. I can only view those photos by creating an album from all of them, then I can open the album and edit or delete etc.  Any one have that problem?

After upgrading to iPhoto 11 and the latest upgrade 9.4.1 (701 67) I cannot open any Event.  The normal double click does not work, nor anything else I have tried. The only way I can view the photos in an Event is to make an Album of it, and then I can easily open it with a double click and edit and delete, arrange photos etc.  Anyone have this problem. Any ideas about how to open an event?

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

  • Iphoto told me to restore from back up due to corrupt file.  When I restore it, it gets all the way to the end and then it tells me it needs to be restored.  HELP!

So my iPhoto told me to restore my library from a backup due to a problem with the file.  First, there wasn't enough space so I deleted all kinds of stuff.  I finally got it to restore and then it told me it needed to repair, thumbnmails, etc.  It gets almost all the way to the end and then it tells me the file is damaged and to restore from a backup.  It is like I am in an endless loop and I can't get to my photos.  HELP ME

I restored it again last night.  After the restore I have 52 GB left of space.  The library is 71 GB.  I opened iphoto and it says there are inconsistencies and it needs to repair.  It is doing the repair now.  What usually happens is that it does the repair and then starts the rebuild thumbnail part and gets to the very end of that before failing

  • IPhoto updated after a restore and now I am missing photos and cannot further update iPhoto

I needed to restore my iMac after the hard drive crashed. I use TimeMachine and the restore process went OK. However, when I restored I noticed I had a new version of iPhoto. I previously had a really old version and now I had iPhoto 11. It appears that I have been updated to iLife 11. All was good, but I soon started to notice some issues:
    (1) Some photos are not displaying in iPhoto. Basically there is just a dotted square where the photo should be. The meta-data is present (e.g. camera details, etc..) but when I select the "Reveal in Finder" menu option, I get "The operation can't be completed becasue the item can't be found". Note that this is only for a small % of my photos. The large majority are OK.
    (2) I am unable to update the iLife apps in the App store. I receive the following message if I try to download an update: “You have updates available for other accounts…” I have only ever had 1 account.
    Help appreciated.
    I am running OSX v10.8.3 on a 2.8GHx Intel Core I7 27inch iMac.
    Regards,
    Anita

    Anita,
“You have updates available for other accounts…” I have only ever had 1 account.
You may accidentally have created a second account.
How exactly did you restore your iMac after the hard drive crashed? Did the store, that replaced the drive, install MacOS for you and you used Migration Assistant to restore from Time Machine afterwards, or did you reinstall Mt. Lion yourself and used the Setup Assistant to restore your mac from Time Machine, or did you restore manually?
If the Store set up your mac and you migrated later, any new installed iLife apps may be tied to a different AppleID or no AppleID at all. Did you already sign into the AppStore with your AppleID (from the "Store > Sign In" menu)? Check, if the new version of iPhoto needs to be accepted to your Apple ID - in this case it will be in the "Accept" panel of the "Purchased" tab. If available, press "Accept".
Did you buy your Mac second hand? Then the preinstalled  iLife apps may be tied to the AppleID of the previous owner. In that case contact Apple Support.
    Regards
    Léonie

Once the update problem is solved, I'd try to rebuild the iPhoto library.

Before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. With information, s/he may be able to get your issue resolved sooner.

    ******A true apple fan********

Actually your suggestions are the ones that i have tried. i have seen that you have tried to help others with this issue and the only one that i could find that said they found the problem said that it was an ilife update issue and it fixed it and i have no available updates. i know it has to do with something in photo stream because it happens when i create a new library and it is loading the photos but i get the message before i reach the maximum 1000 photos. so i've tried updating, new library(first backing up photos and then deleting them from iPhoto), reinstalling OSX many times, running disc utilities. I called Apple the first day i had this issue and i was the first person to call them for support with the retina display and i actually had it escalated to a senior advisor and we thought we fixed the problem but we did not. i am pretty fluent in dealing with troubleshooting these type of issues and this is the first time i'm reaching out to the community. i figured now that the retina has been out some time now that there would be an obvious answer to this issue. thanks for the quick reply.

I tries and it doesnt work!!

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
